I am a “non-traditional” student. When i went back too school i never had the TIME to use any of that “stuff”. I was too busy working, studying, and doing homework. No idea how these kids have the time.

That's the trap: party hard on campus, chill out, fail a few subjects and you're now going to take an extra year or two to finish.
My brother failed a subject in his second year of a five year double degree, but the knock on effect was that he couldn't simply make it up, he ended up going a whole extra year.
His advice to me when I started was "if you think a subject is boring, it's even more boring the second time around".
True. When I was in school there was a different mentality as to why you are here and what this is all about between two classes of students. The first class was straight out of high school and University was a party. The second class was people from the military, returning students, and career changers. For this second class this was at University to gain marketable skills quickly and efficiently. They wanted to get back into the work force and earn money and pay off bills.

With all the activities and extra curriculars on campus, those who chose an online education should pay half. Judging by what I see as far as the "educated" college graduates these universities are pumping out, I'd say they are all getting ripped off regardless.
My school decided this semester that all students had to leave campus and take online classes after Thanksgiving. The school also gave the choice to take every single class entirely online along with clubs. The primary benefit of a dorm to avoid a commute is entirely gone, you are there almost an entire month less, and my school STILL raised the dorm price from last Fall. And of course, the students are STILL willing to pay for it.
A luxury kindergarten for older kids, no wonder they get upset after leaving.

And it's not just the wider availability. Having taught at the college level, both at a community college and at a couple of graduate schools, there is a huge problem of grade inflation. The diplomas are valued more than the education by both the students and the administration.
A high school diploma was a big deal then no child was left behind and it was worthless. College degrees were a big deal then they created BS disciplines any high school graduate could pass and watered down the whole thing. Soon when everyone goes to college and there are quotas on races, genders, sexual identities and passing the same percentage of each they will be utterly worthless.
@@stuarthall3874 I've spent less time studying in some of my college classes than I did back in high school. I'm talking less than 10 hours spent on homework/studying for an entire course. My first two years were mostly memorize the powerpoint before the exam and here is your A. I eventually did choose to be responsible enough and put those extra hours into a full-time job that would actually give me some skills before graduating and help pay off my loans, but I'm sure most kids won't be willing to do that.

I also spent the semester working in R&D for a telehealth company and will have a patent to show for it. One of these things means a lot more for employers...

Going to college was the biggest mistake of my life. For most people, college is a waste of time and money.
College was right for me. I went back as an older student and worked my way through. Earned a Bachelors of Science in nursing & it’s been a great job!

My economics teacher, a very wealthy businessman, once asked us how smart we thought we are. A minute later, he said I will tell you how smart you are; You pay me to tell you to read chapters 1 thru 4, You pay me to give you a test to make sure you read chapters 1 thru 4 and many of you will fail the test because you wouldn't read chapters 1 thru 4.
To say that I'm salty about the cost of college is an understatement.

The best way to bring down the cost of ANYTHING is to stop paying unlimited amounts of money for it.
Went to a Community College and a big name University and I honestly have to say, I learned more and had a much better time in my local Community College.
Over the summer, I took a few courses at a local Community College. Some instructors would say they taught both there and at a nearby "Big Named University." They said there was little difference they are the same person using and same textbook for the same course. But consider the Community College cost only $50 a cr/hr Hr while "Big Named University" cost over $175 a cr/hr. In the end, the accrediting body requires that Calculus be Calculus.
Community College has saved me thousands of dollars. All of my friends went to university and I see them struggling financially. Just for the sake of “College Experience”. I feel that universities are packed with hardcore leftist/communist. Every corner a red fist lifting up.
I went to community, and for one of my art history classes I had the same professor as the 50k private college 25 minutes down the road. Lol. For one one hundredth the cost.
I graduated as high school valedictorian with a 4.2 GPA. I decided to matriculate at my local community college first anyway, despite being accepted to all universities I applied to and my mother thinking it's a "huge mistake." No regrets thus far.
Forgot to mention. My Community College has a Dean's List scholarship. If your GPA is 3.0 or above, then they waive the $50 cr/hr tuition. You still have to pay for your lab fees, expenses, and books. Yes, free tuition! It becomes rough holding/juggling a PT job plus school plus commute. Most schools will let you transfer up to 90 cr/hrs. Should you feel a bit of stigma about Community College don't put it on your resume; let you 4 year degree be there. It will be our secret. :-)

Edit: I agree if you're a pipeline welder traveling all the time or you're overseas, or even an underwater welder you'd probably be able to pull off $150k, but not if it's a local welding job.

I’d love to see a breakdown of annual college budgets, especially for a lot of these state and Ivy-league schools. Large projects that required significant investments would also be an interesting impact on the school’s overall spending.

When I went to college here (Guatemala) everything was focused on LEARNING: no spa, no gym, no fancy dinner, no recreation centers, pool or other amenities - only good class rooms, laboratories, cafeteria and libraries.
It's almost like government gets involved then everything goes sideways...

Last year i was driving with my cousin. He is a surgeon. As we drove through the neighborhood of mansions he pointed to the biggest house on the street. He told me, the owner of this house is the guy who owns the landscaping company that cuts his grass. No college required. Just determination and hard work.

My college didn't even have benches or picnic tables or anywhere to sit outside except steps. Our art studio shared space with aerobics. Sports used high school sports fields. But we were ranked #2 in nation for equine program

I have been saying this exact thing for 20 years. Colleges were VERY affordable as recent as the 80s and early 90s. I remember paying $780 a quarter (so basically 2250 a year) in tuition at Georgia Tech in early 90s. The room and board and meal plan cost about the same as tuition. People once could afford to work a part time job and pay for tuition. Now a part time job would only pay for a few books and the meal plan for a semester. The tuition and room and board another $5000 - $10000 a semester at most state schools. nuts.
End, don't just reduced, but END ALL government subsidies. No a single government backed loan, not a single federal grant, nothing. Within HOURS you would see colleges offering free room and board and meal plans if you come to their school and pay tuition, that is suddenly reduced 50%. You would see a "buy the first year and we'll pay for the second year" deals, again, with greatly reduced costs (the colleges would be competing with each other by dropping costs constantly). We need everything on campus right-sized (lean and mean), including overpaid faculty that doesn't even teach in many cases (research, ie, sitting on their keisters writing books to make even more money).
If nothing else, ban any federal aid to schools whose non-faculty costs are more than triple faculty salaries. I may be way off, but find a reasonable percent and any college that has fancy rock walls and student centers full of luxuries and overbuilt resort dorms is cut off and if they fail, GOOD. That means a cheaper, back to just educating college will rise from those ashes.
Why do so many (not all) Democrats and leftists think MORE money will somehow control or reduce costs, when it's done nothing but encourage campus execs to lavishly spend on COMPLETELY unnecessary luxuries and non-education related amenities? All a student needs is a SMALL, but clean dorm room with a full size bed, a shower and restroom, reasonable and nutritious meals (not lobster or filet or truffles) and solid classrooms and faculty, nothing more.
I used to have the three universities from which I obtained degrees in my will. Upon my demise, I would have bequeathed a portion of my lifetime earnings to those institutions. A few years ago, I toured the dorm in which I lived as an undergraduate. Now, none of those institutions will get a thin dime when I leave this vale of tears. To heck with them.
I go to a private university. Only way I got in was my full sports scholarship. I have no debt and will graduate with no debt this up coming semester. Blessed.
Not necessarily blessed. If you're pulling decent grades (B/A) while still being an athlete, *and* getting a worthwhile degree (hopefully something STEM or maybe Education, otherwise probably not), then you made wise choices and have a good work ethic.
Which, I guess, is a blessing of its own, but one at least in part of your own making.

However, if Connor is both pulling his own weight academically AND bringing in more money to the school by ticket sales and merchandising than he is absorbing through his scholarship (possible, but hardly guaranteed) then I wouldn't begrudge it.
That said, college sports as they are are, well, foolish. We would do better to establish sports academies for this exceptionally gifted in them, and train them for sports like we do for Olympic athletes, and leave colleges to their true mission: academic learning and research.
I work on a college campus and I am here to tell you, when budgets are "cut" it only affects staff salaries and hiring, not faculty. Building and renovations go on just like before.

Trade school is very important.
My son went to college. I paid for it. First thing I learned. Living in a dorm cost more then the education, along with books. He lived at home, and it was affordable. Also, most states allow, as well as it being free. High school student to take english 101, math 101, and history/government 101. At a community college, and have that count at credits for their first year of college. With them still being in High School. It's free for them. They go to their regular High School for the morning, and the community college in the afternoon. It eliminates paying for the first year of college, or the first 2 years, if they start as a junior on high school.
Quit bringing up all of your pesky facts. They just get in the way of people who want socialism.

Thank you for pointing out the insane relative inflation of the cost of college. That is something that frustrates me when discussing college debt with many older people, they don’t seem to understand the drastic increase in the cost of attendance. When my boss entered our field his total student debt was just under the average first year salary, now it’s more than two times average first year salaries. Worse still there is still a pretty good percentage of people in my field with zero debt, take them out of the equation and the number goes to almost 4:1.
When they spend money on dumb shit because they know that people choose based on random amenities rather cost (since BASICALLY ANYONE can get student loans), it’s surprising why people can’t figure out why costs are exploding.
Why not get a cheaper college and then choose to do karate on the side? Why does the school need a dojo? Everyone going there who doesn’t want to do karate is now paying for that. That just replicates for every other thing that gets added.

If you had a water park near a uni, no student is going to visit your park anymore, because there is one on campus.
If you have a restaurant, same thing.
Anything on campus not directly related to education should be paid for by user fees. This should drop the tuition for all students and then those services really wanted by students will become apparent. If the administrators make the wrong decisions you will easily be able to identify them by their huge mistakes and fire them.

My ex was given a budget of $30,000 to equip her office at UGA 25 years ago. She only needed a little over $8100. They said no, you have to spend it all or it will be cut next year. So she bought lots of stuff she didn't need. Multiply that little scenario by all the professors at all the colleges and you have your answer.

@Dan Horden No problem man! Community college yearly tuition can be around $3,000 in some areas while you’re lucky to get around $13,000 yearly tuition from universities. People often take community college their first two years and then transfer to university because they stand to save around $20,000
Yep, that’s what I’m doing now and then when I go to George Mason, I won’t be living on campus.
Also if you quality for financial aid, they will give you free tuition and give you another free 2-5k a semester depending on your income bracket. Many community colleges have great programs too, like nursing, electrical technician, mechanical technicians, ect, just do the program and not have to go to a 4 year.
Best way to do it for sure. Hell most people don’t even need to go past community college or at all like me. 32 years old dropped out after 8th grade making 6 figures no debt. Finish high school for sure though I left cause I had shitty parents and was poor. Got my GED at 23 not that my job needs it but I wanted it for the lulz.
@Dan Horden Yeah I think people tend to over exaggerate a bit about American colleges. Obviously if you want or “need” to get into an Ivy League it’ll cost you around $50,000 yearly tuition which is a harder pill to swallow but for many career paths an Ivy League is considered overkill. I think the stories of American college graduates drowning in debt revolve around them getting money from student loan sharks, not being able to utilize their degree, or just poorly managing their finances in general.

My family is a true middle class white collar family. My mom is a masters level nurse and my dad is an occupational therapist. I was expected to go to school and not settle for anything less than a masters degree. Best thing that I did was wait until I knew what I wanted. I didn't go to my university until the age of 23/24. I worked the whole time. I missed a lot of community events and such. But now I get to do whatever I want because I graduated with an undergraduate degree debt free. I am half way through my Masters program debt free. My family is proud and I appreciated my education way more than my classmates because I had to work for that education.
And a big thing I wish people understood, you do not need a campus for a community experience. There are so many social groups you can get involved with (whether hobby related, volunteer, sports related etc.) that you can find and be a part of. I guarantee you that most people stop talking to all but 10 or so of their "friends" from college. I wish we stopped treating college as simply an extended form of high school, it is stunting the development of people into responsible adults by pushing them into more school no matter the cost.

Lol when I was in college my idea of fun was studying, playing cards, biking, and volunteering for habitat for humanity. Didn't do anything expensive, yet I had fun.

My ass colleges have been cut to the bone. My engineering school got $80 million dollars from a donor's will. Instead of making more dorms for freshman or more study spaces etc. (which are badly needed), all the money went into a giant PR building with barely any use for students. But we got pretzels and smoothies omg!!!

It's a common phrase that reading writing and arithmetic are the "Three Rs of education." Don't blame her for it being wrong.

They used to say that in the olden days. Schools should teach "reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic". To be honest, we need to get people to start reminding schools of what they should be teaching! To be fair, it really applied to elementary school.

If you're in-district that is.... I'm paying out of my ass because I'm a single mile out-of-district. Not as much as University, but 5x more than in-district students are paying. For 4 classes, tuition is 800. Out of district fee? 3200.

What stuck me was at the college of my school dreams tuition went from 7,000 to 14,000 in four years! Sure I became a radio jockey at campus radio station had it’s finance head my senior year! The double of yearly tradition in four years (88-92) blew my mind!
I graduated from a community college two years ago. I had federal aid for the 2.5 years I was there. I had to take out a loan for the first year. It was $5,500. I was blessed with a scholarship my last two semesters. The scholarship covered my entire tuition and yet I STILL received federal funding. I was being paid by the government to go to school. Which was nice, because I used the federal money to pay back a portion of my loan. Also I’m student debt free as of last Saturday!!! Community college/trades are so much better.
Let me get this straight. I should pay through taxes for kids to go to these dream vacation colleges, and I get zero benefits? That makes sense.
The only thing colleged should compete on is academic/research excellence, not climbing walls & lobster dinners.

I have two cousins that went to four year colleges and they both graduated two years ago.
They both got multiple student loan after loan to survive during that four years so they could focus on studying without out working.
One now works at Wal Mart and the other waits tables at a steak house.
They now work to attempt to pay off some of the loans they got and make next to nothing.
I went to a trade school at the same time they were attending college.
They laughed and cracked jokes about my path and thought it was so funny.
They both drive beat up worn out cars and live right beside the ghetto in apartments.
I paid up front for my classes so I have ZERO debt.
I drive a new car and have a nice small home
I also had job placement help right out of school.
My first year out of school I mad 90k.
This year with overtime included in I will make over 160k
They are no longer laughing at me. They are busy stocking shelves and carrying meat.
"We have to make sure college is available for everybody" So they can go get into debt, and eventually vote democrat for loan forgiveness. Brilliant! That lady you interviewed lives in wonderland. She refuses to consider your point of view even remotely.
