- Minneapolis did most everything progressives wanted -- but the city still had racist cops, and violent riots after they killed George Floyd.

Minneapolis burned even though it adopted most every "progressive" idea: a $15 minimum wage, housing subsidies, mandatory paid leave, "green" targets, strong unions, and the most expensive school system in the state.
Did they at least reduce the racial income gap? Minneapolis’ black/white income disparity is about the biggest in the country.
That confuses the media. “Minneapolis had progressive policies, but its economy still left black families behind,” reads a headline in the Washington Post.
Instead of “but," the word should be: “therefore.”
Because as Minnesota Senate candidate Jason Lewis points out: "When you take away the incentive for work and savings and investment, you get less of it."
But Minneapolis politicians say they just need even more government. And even less free enterprise!
"Capitalism as we know it" must go!... says councilman Cam Gordon. In the video above, we debate.

“Who cares if the rich get filthy rich, if the poor do better too?”
Very well said sir.
I’ve heard it said before:
Socialists don’t love the poor; they hate the rich. The poor just offer them a cloak of virtue with which to disguise their villainy.
‘For the greater good’ has always been the rallying cry of tyrants and the creed of thieves.
@@Nicholas_Terry It's two-fold actually. Socialists do care about the poor. They also hate the rich, or rather the incredible power that millions or billions of dollars grants a person. Our government is controlled by those people, and that's a huge threat to our democracy.
Socialists also want more control over their workplaces, but the norm is currently to agree to whatever conditions an employer demands so you can make enough money to get by. Where's my freedom to set my own destiny? Most people can't afford to start their own business. They're forced to work long hours without benefits to survive. The bourgeois who control these businesses are a part of that problem.
@@Cheesewiz247 spoken right out of the socialist brochure.
That argument is a canned response and the only 2 things you are correct about are the fact that the evil people are in power and that socialists hate the rich.
Socialists actions speak louder than their words. They can _say_ they love the poor until they’re blue in the face, but I have yet to meet one who will give up their wealth to a charity or volunteer their time to a shelter.
Socialists may _say_ they care, and are happy to give up other peoples’ money and time, but they will refuse to do it themselves. They’ll put their ‘virtue’ on display for the whole world and think that they are doing good, while they simultaneously turn their noses up at the idea of actually contributing to solving our problems.
They are hypocrites of the highest degree and socialism is the most evil idea that has ever existed, with a body count in the hundreds of millions and counting.
@@Cheesewiz247 Tyler - you show an enormous amount of immaturity. Stop whining about other people who have more than you have and go out and learn a useful, productive trade. You have NEVER needed to start out with a lot of money to be successful. As a financial planner, I know plumbers, electricians and auto mechanics that slowly built up their business and became extremely wealthy. Nobody GAVE them anything. They EARNED their huge homes and their motorhomes and their boats. And with the technology we have today, it is easier than ever to be successful. Stop whining and learn something.
@@johnnynick3621 I was only trying to describe what socialists believe. Only some of my last comment was my own opinion. I hope you'll respect that my views have changed somewhat since last year.
My first problem is that the ultra wealthy have incredible power over me and the society I live it. If you have that kind of power in society, you should be elected. Anything else is unjust. Me learning a skill and starting my own business doesn't alleviate this problem at all.
The second problem is with regard worker-owner relations. People need to work to survive. Not everyone can be a business owner. There will always be people who are at the mercy of the people who control their workplaces. Unless they're in a good, non-corrupt union, they have no ability to bargain. If they don't like how they're treated, the only thing they can do is try to find another job. Eventually, they can work toward being a business owner themselves, but it doesn't make the exploitation they experience in the meantime justified.
I'd also like to say, this isn't about me. My pay is good, I have good skills, and the most exploitation I've experienced has been from a sketchy landlord I had for a year. I just want a better world. You can call that whining if you'd like, I guess.
"We now have won $15 min wage...whoooooooo!"

Unemployment pays more anyway
@@Junger2183 Yeah would you rather work 43 hours a week @$15 an hour or just sit on your ass for the same money? You don't have to be an expert in game theory to understand what people will choose.
Unemployment should quickly taper off to nothing, give people maybe a month at the normal rate so they don't lose their housing but after that drop it week by week until they're getting nothing. There's plenty of jobs even right now people just don't want to do them, I've been offering my friends the chance to work where I do for $20 an hour doing nothing but scanning and screening people at construction sites but they'd rather collect $650 a week till it runs out. “I’m not looking for a job.” Gee, that’s surprising.
The same happened in England from the 60s to the early 80s, a large mass of people perfectly capable of working remained unemployed for many years and had no interest in looking for work, why? With unemployment benefits they received as much or more money that if they had a formal job and having temporary jobs or small businesses they could earn much more.
@@zarach9459 having a temporary job or small business is in my opinion something good, there are a lot of people for example in rural areas here (in my country) that if they were to go to any well paying job close to them, they would waste 3 to 4 hours commuting and another 8 to 10 hours working that would be most of their day gone, and they wouldn't have time to tend to their gardens and animals, (we heave the largest percentage of any country of people who own their homes) so it's better for them to do those few hours of community work to get the unemployment check and sell a bit of their produce and rent the back of their gardens to the field workers and maybe they get employed by day when it's harvest season and maybe to chop some wood, and it all turns out fine, yet they appear to be part of the structurally unemployed bc they don't have a job, and they aren't looking for one...

I don't like how people say "Capitalism lifted people out of poverty". It doesn't. It *allows* people to lift *themselves* out of poverty.
It's the same metaphor politicians use when trying to take credit for the hard work and determination of others, and it's a line the CCP loves repeating. Put credit where credit is due. Socialism fails specifically because it depends on the system to do the lifting, and not the individual.
Or be helped by private charities too!
@Zeksteve why? they do better work than the government, they provide funding for things that truly need it, who else is going to do this? the government? they work so poorly that half the money is gone by the time it reaches the charity, and imagine if they ran the charity, almost nothing will be left by the time it reached what it was supposed to go to, on the other hand, the generous people of america will see that 100% of all money given to the charity actually reaches it, and the people running it will spend it as best as they can, as they actually care about what they are funding.

If a couple is making a combined income of $130k and can't afford to have a kid, then they aren't managing their money wisely.
What city and state do you live in? 130k is basically poverty level in NYC and San Francisco.
It's all about living below you means and not acquiring debt
You're living in the wrong area.
You Could afford to have a child. That right there is a lie.
If you can't afford to have a kid at income of 130K, you have a spending problem not kid problem. Kids are at most $2K/mo (including private school), or $24/yr much of which is tax deductible.
Thank God for John Stossel. He speaks common sense.
Cam Gorton was my 7th grade teacher at Seward Montessori around 1992 in Minneapolis. One day after lunch recess he was fired and never returned back to class. I know what the roomer is.
Spoiler alert, it's not about George Floyd anymore.
It never was. None of those loser idiots cared about that guy to begin with, all are America hating scum that should only be laughed at for the fools they are.
Never was. Just an excuse to get it rolling.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results
Makes you wonder, what is their real objective..
@@randomuser3741 sadly, they truly believe they can bring about utopia. but for their ideas to work, absolutely every single person must participate and behave perfectly all the time. This simply isn't how reality works. Worth looking at is the Hawks and Doves studies. They prove that crime can never be eliminated, only minimized. accidents cannot be eliminated, only minimized. inequality cannot be eliminated, only minimized. Nature (physics? call it what you like) simply does not allow imbalance to exist.
The problem is monopoly and corrupt manipulation of the lawmakers.
Mr. Stossel, your work here is great. Thank you for offering a bit of the truth and educating the public.
This guy's talking about capitalism causing climate change and a housing crisis LOL.
These clowns would not know real environmental issues if it hit them on the head a million times over.
Housing crisis - caused by Federal Reserve
Climate change crisis - cause by fraudulent academics.
Meanwhile, he uses a laptop and webcam brought to you by...capitalism.
Would`ve been funny of Stossel asked him "What exactly IS "climate change"? And how is capitalism affecting it?"
Actually, housing is in a boom even though we recovered from the government caused sub prime lending crisis. Way to distort the facts by another socialist politician.
He said the key word, democratic "control".
Lol you’re right. They’re not hiding it anymore
So just substitute “democratic” for “Socialist”. There, now it’s clear who we are dealing with.
Government control.
Minneapolis is definitely a place in which one would not want to live
Law abiding citizens will definitely be out in the cold 🥶 in that state 😶🌫️😶🌫️🥶🥶😨😨
Like all bad management, when a policy fails, they double down and do more of the same policy.
Leftist policies do the exact opposite of their stated intent
yes but we mist not be arrogant and thinking the union is the right policy. the confederatecy was right this United union is no diffrent that the soviet union and its faling the same way it just took longer.
BUBBLEGUM GUN how does fighting to keep enslaving people sound like a utopia to you?
Robert T they do now? So how come people in Europe still work huh?
This is the Dumbocrat's moto...🤦♂️

I have friends who came from Eastern Europe and say the pollution and environmental damage was shocking with state owned industries.
WOW! The US is really going through some apocalyptic times.
Not the entirely of the US. Only the states that are governed by the Democrats.
Those businesses that were burned out will never return. They will take their insurance money and reopen somewhere else.
True. And a lot of them were not insured and lost everything they ever saved and worked for.
Damages caused during a riot is not covered in standard insurance contracts, it has to have it's own seperate policy and many business owners don't know that. The man from Kenosha that had his car lot burned lost it all. His insurance will not cover a dime of the damage.
all this hubbub about capitalism being bad but they wont move somewhere socialism works
Yea all these people should try living in Venezuela or Ecuador or Indonesia for a while, they would be glad to be back home in momies basement
Because there is nowhere socialism works.
Where does socialism work? Remember: only place socialism works is if I'm in charge.
You noticed that as well I see.
Where does socialism work?
In California we voted for the $15 an hour wage and then we also voted for the largest increase in tax history! We're idiots!
Something no one talks about, fortune 500 companies are leaving.
I like how the mayors answer to how every time someone tries Socialism it leads to poverty and destruction, his answer his version will be different.
Socialism, not even once.
Read about the true story of the first Thanksgiving and how socialism was tried and failed even back then. It almost killed the entire colony.
Socialism can be defined as I WANT something, but I don’t want to WORK for it.
No
Modern socialism is developed from a lack of a work ethic, working a minimum wage job should not get you the same pay as someone who built a company and is making millions of dollars.
Many socialists just wanted the benefits without work.

👍 Nice! 🇺🇸
That explains a lot about "democratic socialism".
C.S. Lewis is timeless.
Everyone should read "Animal Farm" to see what socialism did 100 years ago in Europe.
Oh yeah I seen that
europe is a continent so your typical american comment doesn't make sense.
Actually, the level of aggression is such, that it is now time to read "The Gulag Archipelago".

Britain has a free health care system and a comprehensive welfare system and a comparatively low crime rate to boot. Prior to Covid-19 it had a low unemployment rate. Gun toting, debt driven Yankee capitalism is a failure.
I love how the one guy goes from who doesnt want justice, to the DEMOCRATs charged the officers in 4 days.
It just got worse.... you cant legally keep a gun in your home unless its locked up & unloaded

I have always thought that civil unrest would come from Minneapolis. Little Mogadishu was the biggest mistake of Minnesota
I just don't understand how they think this crap will be funded.
A year later look at what is happening.
The real taxpayers better get out now.
Minneapolis will go the way of Detroit, downhill.
when your city don't had much taxpayer... that what you get...
Tax Revolt! INCOMING!
Minneapolis = the next Detroit.
Even the liberal Bono came to the realization that the only thing that will help Africa is entrepreneurial capitalism. Not handouts which are just a bandaid.
Just watched a video of a young African woman who was complaining that do gooders like Tom's Shoes who donate 1 pair of shoes for everyone purchased, actually put African shoe makers out of work. Same for many products which are donated with the good intentions of helping the poor. All they did was put the locals out of work.
Watch the netflix movie called poverty inc.
handouts are worse than a bandaid because our skin actually heals itself. It's more like having a bandaid that you remove every day to cut the wound open again, reapply the bandaid and doing that every day for the rest of your life.
Hypercarnivore I agree. The point is capitalism trumps socialism. Pun intended
Mike Wurlitzer I’ve heard the same thing. The people that struggle to make a living can’t compete with free. So by meddling in an economy to help one person for a little while while hurting another forever.
No other system in the world has pulled as many ppl out of poverty than capitalism.
John Stossel and Reason magazine, my two hero's.
Oh man is anyone ever gonna use LOGIC instead of EMOTION to make decisions?
No, because then you'd have to grapple with hard choices. Better to just scream that someone is a traitor of some kind.

You remind me of a famous quote, During the French revolution a man going to the guillotine was asked if he had any last words, "yes, my only regret is I won't see that rat Raspiere meet the national razor." Six months later Raspiere got his date with the national razor.
