Introduction
Big Idea: Because God alone is the perfect and ultimate Judge, we must reflect his glory by being just and merciful judges, not hypocritical and harsh judges.
1. Should We Judge Others? [Mt. 7:1-2]
1. The Prohibition [Mt. 7:1; Jas. 2:12-13; 4:11-12]
• What Jesus Doesn’t Prohibit
1. Not condemning law courts
2. Not suspending assessments of spiritual condition [Mt. 7:6]
• What Jesus Does Prohibit: Judging Harshly, Severely, Mercilessly
1. Be careful of judging people’s hearts [1 Cor. 4:4-5]
2. Be careful of judging out of an evil attitude [1 Pet. 4:8]
3. Be careful of judging without all the information [Prov. 18:13, 17]
2. The Principle [Mt. 7:2; 5:7; 6:14-15; Rom. 2:1-3; 14:10-13; 2 Cor. 5:10]
2. Where Should Judgment Begin? [Mt. 7:3-5]
1. Step 1: Take the Beam of Wood Out of Your Own Eye [Mt. 7:3-5a]
• We must regularly examine ourselves and our sins [2 Cor. 13:5]
• We must ask other disciples to help us see our sins [Prov. 27:6]
• We must confess and forsake anything that blinds us [1 Jn. 1:8-9]
2. Step 2: Take the Splinter Out of Your Brother’s Eye [Mt. 7:5b]
• From a Humble Heart [1 Cor. 10:12-13]
• In a Spirit of Gentleness [Gal. 6:1-2; Jas. 5:19-20]
3. When Should We Stop Sharing the Gospel with Others? [Mt. 7:6]
1. We must discern who is open to the gospel and who is obstinate in their rejection of the gospel [Mt. 7:6; Exod. 22:31; Deut. 14:8; 2 Pet. 2:22]
2. We must take care to guard the gospel in witness and in life [Mt. 10:11-15; Lk. 23:3, 9; Acts 13:44-51; 18:5-6]
• Giving comfort to those who are actually without hope [1 Thess. 4:13]
• Being unequally yoked with those who reject the gospel [2 Cor. 6:14]
• Thinking that all will respond to the gospel alike [Mt. 13:1-23]
• Changing the gospel to make it palatable for those rejecting it [Gal. 1-2]
