Diantha has a clear advantage with mega Gardevoir who can handle two of Lance's Dragons and Gourgeist who can handle Gyarados somewhat better even tho its grass type moves aren't super effective on Gyarados On the other hand Lance is a champion of two regions rather than one and his Gyarados isn't a pushover
I'm not angry about the result of the battle.. I'm just surprised how quickly Leon won. Alain's Charizard is one of the strongest Pokemon to ever appear in the anime.
The battle was disappointing and felt totally rushed. They could have continued the battle of Charizard vs Charizard in next episode rather than finishing in less than 40 seconds. Not a good day for Alan's fans.
Yeah, I wonder if this pace will be the norm for this tournament, because this battle definitely felt rushed, and it could have been a cliffhanger into the next episode for the final Charizard vs Charizard clash

MY POINTS OF REVIEW FOR THIS EPISODE: It looks like Alain's Charizard learned Flare Blitz {for some reason first impressions-wise, it kinda felt like Flare Blitz was the replacement for Blast Burn}, Alain now owning a Chesnaught (Spiky Shield, Hammer Arm, Gyro Ball, & Pin Missile), and a Malamar (Psycho Cut & Throat Chop). As for Leon, owns a Rillaboom (Drum Beating & Acrobatics [seems to also know a Ground-type attack]) and his Charizard has updated again to Fire Blast, Air Slash, Dragon Pulse, & Ancient Power Malamar was a real shock for me (I thought if anything, maybe Alain should've used his Tyranitar as it would help against Leon's Charizard, but also on the possibility if Leon's 3rd was Dragapult). Also I realized: since this episode debuted Leon having ownership of his 3rd revealed pokemon, Rillaboom, wouldn't that mean: if it follows the game parallel (since in-game Leon chooses the Starter pokemon stronger than yours: in this case since it's Rillaboom, it's following the Sobble choice), which would indicate that another spot in Leon's team is the pokemon member that's weak to your starter; ideally meaning that Rhyperior is in Leon's team?!?!?!?! I had a feeling I was calling this as it was gonna go this badly when they revealed the lineup & tourney format. Just because the masters tournament trainer lineup finally revealed of who's participating in it, it could just all be in vain if we don't get to see the versus pairings that we all wanted. Since the tourney rules for the Masters Tournament is single elimination format (i.e. meaning that it is in knockout rules), that meant it'll be the 1st round with 4 VS Pairings, and then it'll move to the Semi-Finals with 2 VS Pairings, and then it will lead last to the Finals last remaining pairing (which we all knew it was gonna be ash vs leon); meaning all the other fights were gonna go one way or another. And in this case it went badly as so many people hated the pairings; Pokemon Journeys, once again you are almost-definite a hit-and-a-miss season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
looks like charizard was on a break since XY also seemingly how ash greninja is retconned, technically charizard didnt beat ash greninja but just greninja so it makes sense why charizard is not SOOO powerful
Alain's Charizard must have suffered a huge recoil damage with that Flare Blitz on Rilaboom. That Dragon Pulse was pretty much a match-ending move at that point.
This battle needed to be it own episode I can't accept Alain Charizard being one shotted. I will say Rillaboom Vs Chesnaught was great but after that it went downhill fast

I think it would have been much better to split the opening ceremony and the battle into two separate episodes; I would love to have seen more dialogue and interactions between the champions. How is that Ash only spoke to Iris and nodded at Alain!? Iris on the other hand asking for a selfie was so wholesome! The animation in this episode was excellent! The tension in the air when Ash and Iris entered the ‘champions room’ was perfect (I really wish they had made more of that particular scene) and the additions of Professor sycamore, Marin and Chespee were great touches. My main concern was the battle; having watched it again it’s not as bad as I initially thought but the Charizard vs Charizard battle was a total let down. That said, as the next episode goes straight into Lance vs Diantha I hope it delivers. I think Lance/Diantha or Cynthia/Iris will be the best battles of the first round. 7.5/10 in my book 📕.
I wonder how much of a time crunch the anime is truly in, like there are not that many weeks left to make this arc as good as possible, finish the Project Mew story, and do anything else that needs to happen to end the series. We have gotten like one filler episode total in the last few months, so they must be stretched for time

I watched this episode after hearing that a lot of people be really mad at how bad it was. I was just sitting there thinking "it can't be that bad right?" I was about half right in that statement. I really liked the first half of the episode with the ceremony (kinda wish that was more of a stand alone episode but I get were short on Journeys time as is) and Leon vs. Alain was starting off great with great strategies and moves on display. I'd say it's around after Rillaboom got K.O'd where things started to dive for me. I don't mind Malamar's loss that much, quick K.O's are probably gonna need to be a given here. What really dropped the ball was Alain's Charizard losing to *one* move. I was more disappointed than anything watching that. I prepped myself for Alain losing to not get too beat up about it but this was kinda disrespectful to Charizard with what we've of him in the past not even just beating Ash-Greninja. It also puts Leon on an even bigger pedestal and really makes you wonder how in the world will Ash believably beat this guy with what we've seen. Overall this has me a bit worried about the rest of the Masters Tournament but I'm open to seeing Lance and Diantha change that. 6/10 for me personally.
Alain's comment about Malamar, "Your powers will turn the tide", makes me think, with the Already confirmed moves Psycho Cut, and Throat Chop, the other moves it probably knew were Superpower, and Topsy-turvy, with the Ability being Contrary. Superpower + Contrary giving Malamar +1 Attack and +1 Defense, and Topsy-turvy reversing any Stat boosts Leon's pokemon might try to accumulate...which brings me to my next point, Alain Choked! He should have switched Chesnaught out right after Gmax was complete, in favor of Malamar, and it's first move could have been Topsy-turvy, to turn Rillaboom's +1 Speed, +1 Sp. Defense, into a -1 Speed, -1 Sp. Defense Rillaboom, letting Malamar gain the speed advantage, land some attacks and win with Superpower, simultaneously getting an important knock out, gain a 3-2 Lead, and have a +1 Attack, +1 Defense, going forward in the battle. Now, I do believe the match could have then played out the same from there, Leon's Charizard defeating Malamar (Since the Defense boost wouldn't matter with Charizard's All special Moveset), then Alain sending out his Charizard, Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X, and since he relies on getting close with Dragon Claw, Thunder Punch, or Flare Blitz (Alain would think it's too soon for Blast Burn), Mega Charizard X would charge in just to be Intercepted and knocked out by the held back Dragon Pulse, getting a key knock out and turning the match 1-2 with Leon leading, and obviously Chesnaught vs Charizard would be a fast round with Chesnaught getting Knocked out after not landing a hit on the Ranged attacking Charizard (Leon- Fire Blast. Alain- Spiky Shield. Alain- Pin Missile. Leon- Air Slash. Air Slash overpowers Pin Missile, and knocks out Chesnaught) If the battle played out like this, I think it would have been perceived a lot better tbh!
This was the most SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE episode I've ever had to watch in quite a while. Before the FIXSUBS came out, several people were already posting their disappointment with the battle itself and I _knew_ that something was wrong. I LOVED the first half of the episode and even sort of enjoyed the Rillaboom & Chesnaught battle but... Why try to cram in a 3 v 3 battle with these two clear powerhouses in just under 15 minutes when this was BASICALLY the opening ceremony and meet and greet episode? XD We knew Alain would lose but this is a situation where the battle itself should have been its own episode or even _continue_ into the next one (I mean it HAS happened before even in Journeys) to really sell us on how strong Alain has become but also that Leon was just too strong for him to overcome even though Alain gave it his all. The two Charizards clashing should have been the highlight but it... Really wasn't.
It is a very strange decision, it just seems odd especially when the next episode is Lance vs Diantha, which far less people care about compared to Alain returning
@@EliteTrainerMark right there is 3 ways to make this better 1 the easiest after the match up are announced have a meet and greet with the fans and then a dinner with the master 8 and their guests if they have anyone and the next EP the battles beginning. 2 have a better bracket Leon vs Diantha, Steven vs Alian, Cynthia vs Iris, Ash vs Lance semi finals Leon vs Alian gmax charizard vs mega charizard like it should of been in this match, Ash vs Cynthia finals Leon vs Ash. Not a lot of people would care if Diantha got a rushed battle with Leon like Alian did. 3 have someone else in Alian place Flint, Gardenia, Sabrina, koga, Wallace ect. Just some other gym leader or elite 4 member. Also don't we have at least 20 EP till it ends so why rush like I see round 1 being 4 EP semi finals 4 EP and finals 4 EP so 12 EP all together, project mew final being 4 EP so 16 EP and Chloe hopefully getting 2EP so 18EP so the other 2 EP for other stuff. Also that is the least they could definitely get 5-10 more EP I just don't see what else they could have to do but conclude Ash, Goh and Chloe goal.
I agree with every word. I too am not the biggest XY fan and I think XY is super overrated( not bad, being bad and being overrated are 2 different things). Alain was always gonna be a sacrificial lamb to set up how strong Leon's Charizard is. This is a very shonen thing with the rival/friend losing to the final boss. What I hated was not getting enough interaction between the trainers in the masters 8. Almost every league has an opening ceremony and then the battles start in the next episode. And considering how this is supposed to be the greatest tournament in the anime I expected more. Plus this should have been a complete 6v6 tournament with them showing every battle. If this IS Ash's swan song it should have been way more.
I think for some those points, I would just say that we should keep in mind this was only the first episode of the arc, there is still plenty of time for more interactions between the Masters Eight
Great points! I would probably give it an 8/10 for the marvelous showcase of each competitor. I just feel like Alain was wasted here and was just used as a stepping stone for Leon. I would rather have someone like Diantha or Iris take his place... Not sure why the writers would bring a cool and exotic character from Kalos and one of Ash's biggest rivals just to lose to Leon with ease. And I wish they used more of his old pokemon who put up a fight against Ash. Also I wish when Leon's Charizard grabbed Malamar, the writer would make it so Malamar would hypnosis which would easily connect and that would make this battle all the more interesting, maybe even force Leon to bring out his third pokemon.
I am fine with Alain losing since I didn't want him here in the first place, but yeah they made him look weak in the second half the battle, all for a Charizard that we already knew was really strong
I guess we are all forgetting Leon's base Charizard was able to stand his ground against Eternatus, which proves he is actually overleveled. Indeed Alain's mega Charizard is strong and has withstood against legendaries too, but we have to remember, if Alain wasn't able to beat Steven or Diantha, he never had a chance against Leon.
tbh, they should have started with the third Pokemon, giving Chesnaught a win and then let Charizard defeat Rillaboom, essentially still making it a 2v1.
A lot of people are forgetting that Leon's charzard hit Alain's charzard with air slash before it was recalled for malamar. That does not change the fact that the charzard clash was too short

I was not expecting the sudden dialga's fight to the finish music in the background, Anyways my personal thoughts on this episode is yes the battledefinitely felt rushed so that definitely knocks down the enjoyment a bit but like you said I enjoyed the interactions between all of the masters 8 that I didn't mind much about the actual battle this is still exciting for me as to what's to come

Your opinions regarding this episode pretty much matched mine. I liked it, but I would be lying if I said that I too noticed how easily Alain's Charizard lost. But even with that, I still thought the episode was perfectly fine. Many people don't seem to share my opinion, though, based on what I've seen. Some people have even used the word "disaster" to describe this episode. PS. I share your opinions regarding Greninja too.
It's strange because I can totally understand the decision to open the tournament with a one-sided Leon victory, he is the final boss after all, it's just maybe not doing that against Alain's Mega Charizard X, who like 24 hours ago I would have said is one of the strongest Pokémon in the history of the anime

Personally, i was keeping track of the remaining time of the episode and even thought they were going to save the climax for next episode. But hey, i've been a fan of the Pokémon anime since the OG series and if there is one thing that i've learned, it's to keep my expectations low or out of my mind while watching a new episode. Things can be predicted sometimes but because they are predictable doesn't mean it'll happen the way one might expect or even happen in the first place. I was bothered but i'm not going to get mad and spread hate all over the episode. Instead, i'll acknowledge it has some good points and the primary point they were most likely going for by making Alain vs Leon has been established regardless of how it was done : Leon is still the undefeated Champion and strongest Trainer to participate. Reminder that Alain has managed to defeat one Pokémon of Leon on screen for whoever wants to acknowledge the fact in compensation. For Lance vs Diantha, i'm siding with the latter because Leon vs Lance has already been shown in a previous episode. I doubt they are going to perform a redo of the fight for the same predictable outcome. And personally, i think Lance is overrated compared to Diantha ; she's still a Champion here, not a wannabe. Edit: I also understand why they have to compress so much things in so little time. They don't have much episodes left, just about 15 to 20 episodes max.

I think people should start saying half full" instead of "glass half empty", because despite Alan getting dunked on, this was probably the best way to handle that battle, for the time it lasted at least... At the end of the day, Alan's character arc was never about it's rivalry with Ash or being a strong Trainer. It was about correcting his mistake of trusting Lysander in the first place, all the way back in XYZ. Anybody who watched the Mega-Evolution Specials and then the Team Flare arc immediately after, whilst also disregarding all the battles that Alan had, might understand where I'm going. Does this exclude all the trouble that Alan did to get stronger ? No. But does it mean that we should unjustifyingly hate on the battle that he had with Leon ? Not really...
Leon is really good. He was 3 moves ahead of Alain. Choosing to gigantamax Rillaboom first without saving it on Charizard shows he already got Alain figured out. He won the first battle with early momentum.
So Leon is stronger than Zygarde and Primal Groudon? What absolute nonsense. Alain did better against them than he did against Leon. Not to mention look at Flint vs Leon. Alain should absolutely be above Flint level and he did way better against Leon than Alain did. Tell me how is this consistent at all?

Look, Leon used game logic. Acrobatics is 4x super effective vs Chesnaught. Atk based Charizard OHKO Gorilla. Alain's charizard took damage from air slash, which can be quite a lot. Next, it was a Fireblast Crit on a pokemon that isn't bulky (Malamar just had crap sp.def IV and low HP IV, clearly). And a super effective dragon pulse that crit for maximum damage. Paul vs Ash was a better 3vs3 in a short time battle. Writers could have made it fit better, I guess. But, happens. This was what an In-game pokemon battle would feel like. And poetic justice. Bisharp defeated Goodra for being higher level so, Leon's Charizard is either lv 100 or level 110+. Maybe it's a +sp.atk charizard, as it usually gains speed with the dynamax flying move. In-game wise, this is how fast a battle would be.

I love how slipped in there on how you want Iris to win 🤣🤣🤣 MVP for that one. The later part of the battle paled in comparison the Rillaboom v. Chesnaut. Leaving the desire of more. But boy is Leon tough AF! How an anticlimactic ending for a strong beginning with a huge pause in between. I think I’ll rewatch three weeks from now lol

This episode was an insult... the writers did a very disrespectful job to Alain's Character he doesn't earn the respectable lost that I was hoping for.... we all knew he is gonna lose just make sure Alain lose respectfully... but not like this getting once shot by a single dragon pulse.... heck Alain's Mega Charizard X can tank 1 hydro pump and 2x dragon pulse boosted by mega launcher by a Siebold's Mega Blastoise before it was taken down. but Leon's Charizard destroyed him with a single Dragon Pulse. it doesn't make any sense.....
Alain literally did better against Zygarde, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza than he did against Leon. You would be insane to think Leon’s Charizard is remotely comparable to those legendary Pokemon.
I would be shocked if these returning characters that were watching elsewhere did speak, just because from a logistics perspective that would mean getting ALL of their voice actors back for, what, like two lines of dialogue each?
Love the Drake comparison, that’s exactly how the Undefeated should be handled. Leon’s Charizard is basically a legendary (Like Cynthia’s Garchomp) and anything short of 3/4 powerful Pokémon taking it down will be a disappointment. Though to be fair I’m also hoping Ash loses (for the plot moving forward)
Back when I found out that Alain was in the Masters Eight, I was really confused and wondered why he was a part of it, I didn't really want to see him there at all. And yet somehow, after his actual battle, I am more positive on his involvement in this tournament than most people are😅
Think the battle would have been better if they had prolonged it by a few more minutes so that Mega 'zard X could get back up and at least try to defeat Leon's. Maybe if they pushed the conclusion of it into the next episode? They handled Lana vs Guzma much better because at least that showed Lana's strength and didn't hider any character.
I would like to see a Drake situation like. I believe some of Ash’s Alola Mons will be used against Leon because he is representing Alola. So I can see Ash dominating most of the battle and when Charizard comes in it will be against Pikachu, Lucario, and Incineroar
Its already confirmed Ash ain't using reserves + Pikachu and Lucario battle Leon as per opening and Sirfetch'd is confirmed against Leon as well (Ash said to it Leon is waiting for us, would be weird if they drop the line but don't deliver on it) and there is no way in hell they ain't using Dragonite and Dracovish vs Leon.
Yeah the battle really should have lasted a bit longer luckily the rest of the battles likely be way longer since seem gonna get atleast one whole episode for the each of the battles
The battle was pretty bad and though I do think that people do need to realize that actually only malamar is the only Pokémon to get one shot. Rillaboom got hit by gyro ball and even though it blocked hammer arm it probably got some damaged done to it by it, so it makes sense Alain’s Charizard took it out with one flare blitz. Also chesnaught did take some damage from the g max move even if some was blocked and it resisted the move also acrobatics is a 4x effective move. But even though Alain’s Charizard had recoil damage, being hit by air slash earlier, and took super effective dragon pulse this battle definitely needed Alain and Charizard and I can’t forgive the writers for it. Charizard should not have been taken out so easily and it was such a terrible decision to do thag
I'm just more bothered by how easily Alain was defeated by Leon and tossed aside like hot garbage. Like, WTF? This guy always gave hotly contest battles against Ash's, debatably his best team up until this point, and came out on top and had one of the most over powered Pokemon in anime that wasn't legendary. And Leon slapped him down without even having his Charizard Dynamax. Just what kind of Plot Armor did Leon eat?!
I literally said "oh no, team rocket became streaming influencers." Is not that I don't like it, any tournament won't be complete without team rocket watching, it just confused me and there was no need for them to paint their cheeks.
This whole episode need to be two episodes. Or at least wrap up the battle at the beginning of the next episode. Yes, the interactions are fun. I get the series is short on time but dang that battle doesn’t leave any room for imagination. Maybe it does cause I’m imagining how many different ways it could’ve gone. Lol
I already didn’t like the outcome of this episode to begin with but man oh man did the writers do Alain super dirty in his battle with Leon. I get it everyone has characters they like or dislike for whatever reasons but this man is quite powerful and the fact that they didn’t even show his progress post Kalos league is just extremely disappointing. Not to mention the battle being really rushed a two parter would have been awesome!! I just don’t get why they would hide Alain for all this time only to announce his return for the m8 only for him to not only get eliminated but to get easily eliminated when he is a powerful league winner… I just don’t think the nice moments eliminate the nature of this battle which was just garbage! And until now leons charazard use 7 tipe of moves Fire tipe Flying tipe Fighting tipe Electric tipe Dragon tipe Steel tipe Ground tipe Now i think that if leon fight kalos Champion, his charazard will use poison tipe move.
I just don't understand it. Alain's Mega Charizard X beat Ash's Ash-Greninja, eliminating Ash from the Kalos region's Pokemon League (That pissed off a LOT of people, I remember it all vividly!), but Mega Charizard X can't beat a basic Charizard?!
The thing is it didn't feel like a masters 8 battle the lower class battles were more interesting than it when it should've been a battle of trainers above average

Yk alain had a key stone from lysandrr that had so much energy and power but after xyz he did go find his own stone and maybe that nerfed this charizard but yea leon is also super smart and strategic
4/10, the only good things that I can say about this episode were Hop appearing, the introductions for all the competitors and most of them interacting with each other during the battle because the rest of the episode was a mess; two of Leon's Pokemon take out two of Alain's with one shot and Leon's Chairzard should not have taken out Alain's Chairzard X when it was not Gigantamaxed.

I know it's a fan of x and y series but I think this battle should have been a little longer and this episode should have ended on a cliffhanger of Charizard x versus Charizard then end it within the first two minutes of the next episode I'm really hoping maybe the next round is 6v6 Battle because I'm really tired of these 3v3 battles
in my opinion the episode should have been just the opening ceromony and the interaction's of everyone and reintroduced them so that alain vs leon had more time and didn't need to be rushed. and then the next episode should start with the battles so that every master 8 trainer has more interaction with each other one interaction that I would have loved is cynthia and steven excitenly asking ash qeustions about melmetal and ash giving a look for help to the other competitor's.
This episode... it started great but it just felt rushed as it went on. Alain was The fighter a lot of people were looking forward to. It just seems disrespectful to him and the fans to being him and his Charizard back just to die in one hit... this episode should have gone into the next episode it would have given much more time for the fight and the interactions we all wanted to see. But this might go down as one of the worst fights in the anime😅 or at least one of the most disappointing fights...
For me no such thing : embrassing, disrespecful, etc. In reality Humand being has weakness inclued Alain sorry brother, i saw so many complains about the battle that un important to metioned everywhere,😒 for me that battle was so cool why? I'm an huge XY stan but it's not that Alain lost, cause it was kind of obvious. But the way he went out was just really bad for me personally. Especially for a well written character in the anime. We didnt even see one Thunder Punch or Blast Burn. If you saw how Raihan did put up a fight or even Pikachu the first time then this was really disappointing. In my opinion this should have been ended with an epic clash between G-Max Wildfire and Blast Burn.
That's the point, Leon doesn't need to go all out. If Alain couldn't beat an Elite four, Seibold, he doesn't have a chance against Diantha or Steven (those he interacted with before). How in the world would he even make a dent in Leon's team then

No in my opinion this doesnt make any sense to go down so easily. It's a Masters 8 member not someone from the Normal or Great Class. Sure they rushed it and it is a complaint, but still you see him being the Miare tournament winner, he hasn't been able to defeat Kalos league and eventually Diantha formally and that's the truth. If he is below Diantha he didn't have a shot at Leon. We always knew he was going to lose. But we didn't expect something like a clean sweep, which if you think about it retrospectively, makes sense

And if thats the reason then Iris would have had the same faith against Cynthia. Again it isnt about the result. Leon had to win. Its indeed about how they have done it.

I can not be optimistic about someone who has a Mega Charizard that is so broken that It can defeat a Mega Houndoom with Blast Burn ( despite its Flash Fire ability) and Ash - Greninja. I enjoyed the episode thanks to Ash being recognized as the first Alola Champion and Alain getting wrecked. Kinda wish it was a two part episode 😑!
Go ahead and be mad at me, but I'm kinda ok with Alain going down pretty quick. Remember how the only known lost to Alain's Charizard was to a Blastoise? At least what I remember... Seeing him lose to a super effective move gives me the feeling he doesn't do well against super effective attacks (of course, exclusive Ash Greeninja). Also, how was Hop able to get to Ash so quickly at the beginning, right before he enters the stadium? Maybe be... fast traveled 😉 8.5/10 for me.
I doubt next fortnights episode will be Diantha taking the L. We've seen Lance lose to Leon already, seeing it again would be redundant. That and they're already spat in Kalos's mouth in this Episode, They wouldn't do that two episodes in a row right?

Hard to call. Diantha has a clear advantage with mega Gardevoir who can handle two of Lance's Dragons and Gourgeist who can handle Gyarados somewhat better even tho its grass type moves aren't super effective on Gyarados
On the other hand Lance is a champion of two regions rather than one and his Gyarados isn't a pushover

The battle was disappointing and felt totally rushed. They could have continued the battle of Charizard vs Charizard in next episode rather than finishing in less than 40 seconds. Not a good day for Alan's fans.

MY POINTS OF REVIEW FOR THIS EPISODE:
It looks like Alain's Charizard learned Flare Blitz {for some reason first impressions-wise, it kinda felt like Flare Blitz was the replacement for Blast Burn}, Alain now owning a Chesnaught (Spiky Shield, Hammer Arm, Gyro Ball, & Pin Missile), and a Malamar (Psycho Cut & Throat Chop). As for Leon, owns a Rillaboom (Drum Beating & Acrobatics [seems to also know a Ground-type attack]) and his Charizard has updated again to Fire Blast, Air Slash, Dragon Pulse, & Ancient Power
Malamar was a real shock for me (I thought if anything, maybe Alain should've used his Tyranitar as it would help against Leon's Charizard, but also on the possibility if Leon's 3rd was Dragapult).
Also I realized: since this episode debuted Leon having ownership of his 3rd revealed pokemon, Rillaboom, wouldn't that mean: if it follows the game parallel (since in-game Leon chooses the Starter pokemon stronger than yours: in this case since it's Rillaboom, it's following the Sobble choice), which would indicate that another spot in Leon's team is the pokemon member that's weak to your starter; ideally meaning that Rhyperior is in Leon's team?!?!?!?!
I had a feeling I was calling this as it was gonna go this badly when they revealed the lineup & tourney format. Just because the masters tournament trainer lineup finally revealed of who's participating in it, it could just all be in vain if we don't get to see the versus pairings that we all wanted. Since the tourney rules for the Masters Tournament is single elimination format (i.e. meaning that it is in knockout rules), that meant it'll be the 1st round with 4 VS Pairings, and then it'll move to the Semi-Finals with 2 VS Pairings, and then it will lead last to the Finals last remaining pairing (which we all knew it was gonna be ash vs leon); meaning all the other fights were gonna go one way or another. And in this case it went badly as so many people hated the pairings;

I think it would have been much better to split the opening ceremony and the battle into two separate episodes; I would love to have seen more dialogue and interactions between the champions. How is that Ash only spoke to Iris and nodded at Alain!? Iris on the other hand asking for a selfie was so wholesome!
The animation in this episode was excellent! The tension in the air when Ash and Iris entered the ‘champions room’ was perfect (I really wish they had made more of that particular scene) and the additions of Professor sycamore, Marin and Chespee were great touches.
My main concern was the battle; having watched it again it’s not as bad as I initially thought but the Charizard vs Charizard battle was a total let down.
That said, as the next episode goes straight into Lance vs Diantha I hope it delivers. I think Lance/Diantha or Cynthia/Iris will be the best battles of the first round.
7.5/10 in my book 📕.
I wonder how much of a time crunch the anime is truly in, like there are not that many weeks left to make this arc as good as possible, finish the Project Mew story, and do anything else that needs to happen to end the series. We have gotten like one filler episode total in the last few months, so they must be stretched for time

I watched this episode after hearing that a lot of people be really mad at how bad it was. I was just sitting there thinking "it can't be that bad right?" I was about half right in that statement. I really liked the first half of the episode with the ceremony (kinda wish that was more of a stand alone episode but I get were short on Journeys time as is) and Leon vs. Alain was starting off great with great strategies and moves on display. I'd say it's around after Rillaboom got K.O'd where things started to dive for me. I don't mind Malamar's loss that much, quick K.O's are probably gonna need to be a given here. What really dropped the ball was Alain's Charizard losing to *one* move. I was more disappointed than anything watching that. I prepped myself for Alain losing to not get too beat up about it but this was kinda disrespectful to Charizard with what we've of him in the past not even just beating Ash-Greninja. It also puts Leon on an even bigger pedestal and really makes you wonder how in the world will Ash believably beat this guy with what we've seen. Overall this has me a bit worried about the rest of the Masters Tournament but I'm open to seeing Lance and Diantha change that. 6/10 for me personally.
My biggest let down from this episode is that we didn’t get to see g max Charizard vs mega Charizard x
Alain's comment about Malamar, "Your powers will turn the tide", makes me think, with the Already confirmed moves Psycho Cut, and Throat Chop, the other moves it probably knew were Superpower, and Topsy-turvy, with the Ability being Contrary. Superpower + Contrary giving Malamar +1 Attack and +1 Defense, and Topsy-turvy reversing any Stat boosts Leon's pokemon might try to accumulate...which brings me to my next point, Alain Choked! He should have switched Chesnaught out right after Gmax was complete, in favor of Malamar, and it's first move could have been Topsy-turvy, to turn Rillaboom's +1 Speed, +1 Sp. Defense, into a -1 Speed, -1 Sp. Defense Rillaboom, letting Malamar gain the speed advantage, land some attacks and win with Superpower, simultaneously getting an important knock out, gain a 3-2 Lead, and have a +1 Attack, +1 Defense, going forward in the battle. Now, I do believe the match could have then played out the same from there, Leon's Charizard defeating Malamar (Since the Defense boost wouldn't matter with Charizard's All special Moveset), then Alain sending out his Charizard, Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X, and since he relies on getting close with Dragon Claw, Thunder Punch, or Flare Blitz (Alain would think it's too soon for Blast Burn), Mega Charizard X would charge in just to be Intercepted and knocked out by the held back Dragon Pulse, getting a key knock out and turning the match 1-2 with Leon leading, and obviously Chesnaught vs Charizard would be a fast round with Chesnaught getting Knocked out after not landing a hit on the Ranged attacking Charizard (Leon- Fire Blast. Alain- Spiky Shield. Alain- Pin Missile. Leon- Air Slash. Air Slash overpowers Pin Missile, and knocks out Chesnaught) If the battle played out like this, I think it would have been perceived a lot better tbh!

This was the most SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE episode I've ever had to watch in quite a while. Before the FIXSUBS came out, several people were already posting their disappointment with the battle itself and I _knew_ that something was wrong.
I LOVED the first half of the episode and even sort of enjoyed the Rillaboom & Chesnaught battle but... Why try to cram in a 3 v 3 battle with these two clear powerhouses in just under 15 minutes when this was BASICALLY the opening ceremony and meet and greet episode? XD
We knew Alain would lose but this is a situation where the battle itself should have been its own episode or even _continue_ into the next one (I mean it HAS happened before even in Journeys) to really sell us on how strong Alain has become but also that Leon was just too strong for him to overcome even though Alain gave it his all. The two Charizards clashing should have been the highlight but it... Really wasn't.
It is a very strange decision, it just seems odd especially when the next episode is Lance vs Diantha, which far less people care about compared to Alain returning
@@EliteTrainerMark right there is 3 ways to make this better 1 the easiest after the match up are announced have a meet and greet with the fans and then a dinner with the master 8 and their guests if they have anyone and the next EP the battles beginning. 2 have a better bracket Leon vs Diantha, Steven vs Alian, Cynthia vs Iris, Ash vs Lance semi finals Leon vs Alian gmax charizard vs mega charizard like it should of been in this match, Ash vs Cynthia finals Leon vs Ash. Not a lot of people would care if Diantha got a rushed battle with Leon like Alian did. 3 have someone else in Alian place Flint, Gardenia, Sabrina, koga, Wallace ect. Just some other gym leader or elite 4 member. Also don't we have at least 20 EP till it ends so why rush like I see round 1 being 4 EP semi finals 4 EP and finals 4 EP so 12 EP all together, project mew final being 4 EP so 16 EP and Chloe hopefully getting 2EP so 18EP so the other 2 EP for other stuff. Also that is the least they could definitely get 5-10 more EP I just don't see what else they could have to do but conclude Ash, Goh and Chloe goal.
I agree with every word. I too am not the biggest XY fan and I think XY is super overrated( not bad, being bad and being overrated are 2 different things).
Alain was always gonna be a sacrificial lamb to set up how strong Leon's Charizard is. This is a very shonen thing with the rival/friend losing to the final boss.
What I hated was not getting enough interaction between the trainers in the masters 8. Almost every league has an opening ceremony and then the battles start in the next episode. And considering how this is supposed to be the greatest tournament in the anime I expected more.
Plus this should have been a complete 6v6 tournament with them showing every battle. If this IS Ash's swan song it should have been way more.
I think for some those points, I would just say that we should keep in mind this was only the first episode of the arc, there is still plenty of time for more interactions between the Masters Eight

Great points! I would probably give it an 8/10 for the marvelous showcase of each competitor. I just feel like Alain was wasted here and was just used as a stepping stone for Leon. I would rather have someone like Diantha or Iris take his place...
Not sure why the writers would bring a cool and exotic character from Kalos and one of Ash's biggest rivals just to lose to Leon with ease. And I wish they used more of his old pokemon who put up a fight against Ash.
Also I wish when Leon's Charizard grabbed Malamar, the writer would make it so Malamar would hypnosis which would easily connect and that would make this battle all the more interesting, maybe even force Leon to bring out his third pokemon.

I am fine with Alain losing since I didn't want him here in the first place, but yeah they made him look weak in the second half the battle, all for a Charizard that we already knew was really strong
I guess we are all forgetting Leon's base Charizard was able to stand his ground against Eternatus, which proves he is actually overleveled. Indeed Alain's mega Charizard is strong and has withstood against legendaries too, but we have to remember, if Alain wasn't able to beat Steven or Diantha, he never had a chance against Leon.

A lot of people are forgetting that Leon's charzard hit Alain's charzard with air slash before it was recalled for malamar. That does not change the fact that the charzard clash was too short
Plus Alain’s Charizard probably took recoil damage from the two Flare Blitz he used, and got hit with Leon’s Ancient Power

I was not expecting the sudden dialga's fight to the finish music in the background, Anyways my personal thoughts on this episode is yes the battledefinitely felt rushed so that definitely knocks down the enjoyment a bit but like you said I enjoyed the interactions between all of the masters 8 that I didn't mind much about the actual battle this is still exciting for me as to what's to come

Your opinions regarding this episode pretty much matched mine. I liked it, but I would be lying if I said that I too noticed how easily Alain's Charizard lost. But even with that, I still thought the episode was perfectly fine. Many people don't seem to share my opinion, though, based on what I've seen. Some people have even used the word "disaster" to describe this episode.
PS. I share your opinions regarding Greninja too.
It's strange because I can totally understand the decision to open the tournament with a one-sided Leon victory, he is the final boss after all, it's just maybe not doing that against Alain's Mega Charizard X, who like 24 hours ago I would have said is one of the strongest Pokémon in the history of the anime

Personally, i was keeping track of the remaining time of the episode and even thought they were going to save the climax for next episode. But hey, i've been a fan of the Pokémon anime since the OG series and if there is one thing that i've learned, it's to keep my expectations low or out of my mind while watching a new episode. Things can be predicted sometimes but because they are predictable doesn't mean it'll happen the way one might expect or even happen in the first place.
I was bothered but i'm not going to get mad and spread hate all over the episode. Instead, i'll acknowledge it has some good points and the primary point they were most likely going for by making Alain vs Leon has been established regardless of how it was done : Leon is still the undefeated Champion and strongest Trainer to participate. Reminder that Alain has managed to defeat one Pokémon of Leon on screen for whoever wants to acknowledge the fact in compensation.
For Lance vs Diantha, i'm siding with the latter because Leon vs Lance has already been shown in a previous episode. I doubt they are going to perform a redo of the fight for the same predictable outcome. And personally, i think Lance is overrated compared to Diantha ; she's still a Champion here, not a wannabe.
Edit: I also understand why they have to compress so much things in so little time. They don't have much episodes left, just about 15 to 20 episodes max.
The only thing that hurts this episode is that the opening ceremony and Alain vs Leon should've been two separate episodes.
By the way, I really hope Diantha wins.

At the end of the day, Alan's character arc was never about it's rivalry with Ash or being a strong Trainer. It was about correcting his mistake of trusting Lysander in the first place, all the way back in XYZ. Anybody who watched the Mega-Evolution Specials and then the Team Flare arc immediately after, whilst also disregarding all the battles that Alan had, might understand where I'm going. Does this exclude all the trouble that Alan did to get stronger ? No. But does it mean that we should unjustifyingly hate on the battle that he had with Leon ? Not really...

Leon is really good. He was 3 moves ahead of Alain. Choosing to gigantamax Rillaboom first without saving it on Charizard shows he already got Alain figured out. He won the first battle with early momentum.

Look, Leon used game logic. Acrobatics is 4x super effective vs Chesnaught. Atk based Charizard OHKO Gorilla. Alain's charizard took damage from air slash, which can be quite a lot. Next, it was a Fireblast Crit on a pokemon that isn't bulky (Malamar just had crap sp.def IV and low HP IV, clearly). And a super effective dragon pulse that crit for maximum damage.
Paul vs Ash was a better 3vs3 in a short time battle. Writers could have made it fit better, I guess. But, happens. This was what an In-game pokemon battle would feel like. And poetic justice. Bisharp defeated Goodra for being higher level so, Leon's Charizard is either lv 100 or level 110+. Maybe it's a +sp.atk charizard, as it usually gains speed with the dynamax flying move.
In-game wise, this is how fast a battle would be.
Killer part is why does Alain even have flare blitz on charizard x it makes little to no sense Alain was more strategic than that tbh and then WHERE THE HELL WAS THUNDER PUNCH 🤛 if Alain really wanted to come back to face leon he definitely would’ve been using thunder punch

This episode was a complete disrespect to both Alain and the XY fans. It was to be expected that Alain WILL lose but not like this.

I love how slipped in there on how you want Iris to win 🤣🤣🤣 MVP for that one. The later part of the battle paled in comparison the Rillaboom v. Chesnaut. Leaving the desire of more. But boy is Leon tough AF! How an anticlimactic ending for a strong beginning with a huge pause in between. I think I’ll rewatch three weeks from now lol

As for the moveset, dragon pulse was probably because Cynthia, Iris and Lance. It was there for those 'dragon' trainers.
He also saw Ash owns a Dragonite when they worked together to stop the Dynamaxed Pokémon from rampaging the Galar region.
To all Alain fans. This episode was an insult... the writers did a very disrespectful job to Alain's Character he doesn't earn the respectable lost that I was hoping for.... we all knew he is gonna lose just make sure Alain lose respectfully... but not like this getting once shot by a single dragon pulse....
heck Alain's Mega Charizard X can tank 1 hydro pump and 2x dragon pulse boosted by mega launcher by a Siebold's Mega Blastoise before it was taken down.
but Leon's Charizard destroyed him with a single Dragon Pulse. it doesn't make any sense.....
Alain literally did better against Zygarde, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza than he did against Leon. You would be insane to think Leon’s Charizard is remotely comparable to those legendary Pokemon.

Love the Drake comparison, that’s exactly how the Undefeated should be handled. Leon’s Charizard is basically a legendary (Like Cynthia’s Garchomp) and anything short of 3/4 powerful Pokémon taking it down will be a disappointment. Though to be fair I’m also hoping Ash loses (for the plot moving forward)

Back when I found out that Alain was in the Masters Eight, I was really confused and wondered why he was a part of it, I didn't really want to see him there at all. And yet somehow, after his actual battle, I am more positive on his involvement in this tournament than most people are😅

Think the battle would have been better if they had prolonged it by a few more minutes so that Mega 'zard X could get back up and at least try to defeat Leon's. Maybe if they pushed the conclusion of it into the next episode? They handled Lana vs Guzma much better because at least that showed Lana's strength and didn't hider any character.
I would like to see a Drake situation like. I believe some of Ash’s Alola Mons will be used against Leon because he is representing Alola. So I can see Ash dominating most of the battle and when Charizard comes in it will be against Pikachu, Lucario, and Incineroar
Its already confirmed Ash ain't using reserves + Pikachu and Lucario battle Leon as per opening and Sirfetch'd is confirmed against Leon as well (Ash said to it Leon is waiting for us, would be weird if they drop the line but don't deliver on it) and there is no way in hell they ain't using Dragonite and Dracovish vs Leon.
Yeah the battle really should have lasted a bit longer luckily the rest of the battles likely be way longer since seem gonna get atleast one whole episode for the each of the battles

The battle was pretty bad and though I do think that people do need to realize that actually only malamar is the only Pokémon to get one shot. Rillaboom got hit by gyro ball and even though it blocked hammer arm it probably got some damaged done to it by it, so it makes sense Alain’s Charizard took it out with one flare blitz. Also chesnaught did take some damage from the g max move even if some was blocked and it resisted the move also acrobatics is a 4x effective move. But even though Alain’s Charizard had recoil damage, being hit by air slash earlier, and took super effective dragon pulse this battle definitely needed Alain and Charizard and I can’t forgive the writers for it. Charizard should not have been taken out so easily and it was such a terrible decision to do thag

I'm just more bothered by how easily Alain was defeated by Leon and tossed aside like hot garbage. Like, WTF? This guy always gave hotly contest battles against Ash's, debatably his best team up until this point, and came out on top and had one of the most over powered Pokemon in anime that wasn't legendary. And Leon slapped him down without even having his Charizard Dynamax.

This whole episode need to be two episodes. Or at least wrap up the battle at the beginning of the next episode. Yes, the interactions are fun. I get the series is short on time but dang that battle doesn’t leave any room for imagination. Maybe it does cause I’m imagining how many different ways it could’ve gone. Lol

I already didn’t like the outcome of this episode to begin with but man oh man did the writers do Alain super dirty in his battle with Leon.
I get it everyone has characters they like or dislike for whatever reasons but this man is quite powerful and the fact that they didn’t even show his progress post Kalos league is just extremely disappointing.
Not to mention the battle being really rushed a two parter would have been awesome!! I just don’t get why they would hide Alain for all this time only to announce his return for the m8 only for him to not only get eliminated but to get easily eliminated when he is a powerful league winner…
I just don’t think the nice moments eliminate the nature of this battle which was just garbage!

I just don't understand it. Alain's Mega Charizard X beat Ash's Ash-Greninja, eliminating Ash from the Kalos region's Pokemon League (That pissed off a LOT of people, I remember it all vividly!), but Mega Charizard X can't beat a basic Charizard?!
The thing is it didn't feel like a masters 8 battle the lower class battles were more interesting than it when it should've been a battle of trainers above average

Yk alain had a key stone from lysandrr that had so much energy and power but after xyz he did go find his own stone and maybe that nerfed this charizard but yea leon is also super smart and strategic
4/10, the only good things that I can say about this episode were Hop appearing, the introductions for all the competitors and most of them interacting with each other during the battle because the rest of the episode was a mess; two of Leon's Pokemon take out two of Alain's with one shot and Leon's Chairzard should not have taken out Alain's Chairzard X when it was not Gigantamaxed.
this episode feel like the pacing was off a little bit. I know it's a fan of x and y series but I think this battle should have been a little longer and this episode should have ended on a cliffhanger of Charizard x versus Charizard then end it within the first two minutes of the next episode I'm really hoping maybe the next round is 6v6 Battle because I'm really tired of these 3v3 battles
in my opinion the episode should have been just the opening ceromony and the interaction's of everyone and reintroduced them so that alain vs leon had more time and didn't need to be rushed. and then the next episode should start with the battles so that every master 8 trainer has more interaction with each other one interaction that I would have loved is cynthia and steven excitenly asking ash qeustions about melmetal and ash giving a look for help to the other competitor's.

This episode... it started great but it just felt rushed as it went on. Alain was The fighter a lot of people were looking forward to. It just seems disrespectful to him and the fans to being him and his Charizard back just to die in one hit... this episode should have gone into the next episode it would have given much more time for the fight and the interactions we all wanted to see. But this might go down as one of the worst fights in the anime😅 or at least one of the most disappointing fights...

I'm an huge XY stan but it's not that Alain lost, cause it was kind of obvious. But the way he went out was just really bad for me personally. Especially for a well written character in the anime. We didnt even see one Thunder Punch or Blast Burn. If you saw how Raihan did put up a fight or even Pikachu the first time then this was really disappointing. In my opinion this should have been ended with an epic clash between G-Max Wildfire and Blast Burn.
That's the point, Leon doesn't need to go all out. If Alain couldn't beat an Elite four, Seibold, he doesn't have a chance against Diantha or Steven (those he interacted with before). How in the world would he even make a dent in Leon's team then

No in my opinion this doesnt make any sense to go down so easily. It's a Masters 8 member not someone from the Normal or Great Class. Writing was just horrible and they had to rush this because of Gen 9...
Sure they rushed it and it is a complaint, but still you see him being the Miare tournament winner, he hasn't been able to defeat Kalos league and eventually Diantha formally and that's the truth. If he is below Diantha he didn't have a shot at Leon. We always knew he was going to lose. But we didn't expect something like a clean sweep, which if you think about it retrospectively, makes sense

And if thats the reason then Iris would have had the same faith against Cynthia. Again it isnt about the result. Leon had to win. Its indeed about how they have done it.

Sorry, but it is annoying that it took Ash 6 Leagues to finally become Champion in Alola. I can not be optimistic about someone who has a Mega Charizard that is so broken that It can defeat a Mega Houndoom with Blast Burn ( despite its Flash Fire ability) and Ash - Greninja. I enjoyed the episode thanks to Ash being recognized as the first Alola Champion and Alain getting wrecked. Kinda wish it was a two part episode 😑!

Seeing him lose to a super effective move gives me the feeling he doesn't do well against super effective attacks (of course, exclusive Ash Greeninja). Also, how was Hop able to get to Ash so quickly at the beginning, right before he enters the stadium? Maybe be... fast traveled 😉 8.5/10 for me.
Funny thing is: It also lost to Dragon Pulse vs Blastoise, so it seems that move is its Kryptonite.
