    One good point to mention:
    As far as I am aware, Veritas are the only ones to make a bevel up jackrabbit. Stanley made the No 10 series, which are rare and more fragile, and Lie Neilson modeled theirs on the No 10. Both bevel up, and if you want a lower angle you have to buy the extra frog for the Lie Neilson.
    I very often cut large limber frame joints into massive beams.
    The Veritas Jackrabbit is the only plane that suits my needs. And since no one else will make a bevel up jackrabbit, it's that or nothing.

    Another good video packed with information. I am really enjoying this format. Keep it up!
    I only have one comment on this video. When you mentioned the longevity of the blade. The only person that would really have an issue with it would be a professional who uses it every day. As a hobbyist myself, it wouldn't matter. I have an old Stanley 605 that I was given over 10 years ago by my wife's mother. It originally beloved to my wife's great grandfather who was a professional woodworker. The blade is original and is very short. It works perfectly and probably will for a long time.
    Long story short, no hobbyist should worry about blade length. It will last longer than you.

    A Jack Rabbet is just about my best loved plane. As you mention, super handy for timber framing. Your review makes a very compelling argument for the Veritas - that adjustable mouth is an especially cool feature, and those four lateral set screws are a great innovation. And the low angle could be handy for end-grain shoulder trimming.
    But I can't justify the high price when I already have a well-used Stanley #10 which has worked hard for me for many years. Admittedly, I have coveted a beautiful Lie Nielsen 10-1/4 with its Bedrock style frog adjuster for a long time, but now I'll be wanting that Veritas instead. Made in Canada too - what could be better.

      @@BatCaveCreations I haven't used a fence on my jack rabbet in the past, mostly cleaning up big tenons. I can imagine it would be useful in some situations, like door and window frame rabbets. In the past I've simply clamped or tacked a wooden cleat on the workpiece and run the cheek of the JR against that. At a much smaller scale we use that technique with a little Stanley 92 shoulder to cut the 3/4" stem and transom gains in lapstrake boatbuilding.

    One thing you mentioned in this video that is barely ever talked about is the toothed blade for the jack plane. It would be interesting to see your use of it. The fence for the Jack kinda stinks. It doesn't have anything to screw into so it's just a friction hold from two nuts against the cheek of the plane. I have never used it completely successfully. It also doesn't have any detents to tell you when it's exactly 90°, much less 45 or something else.

    The only reason I can think of why you shouldn’t buy the Rabbet version (besides price) is that since the iron cuts all the way to the edge of the casting, you can’t use it with a shooting board or else the plane will just destroy it.

    I’ve seen videos about older jack rabbet planes having issues with the cheeks flexing or tending to break when used as a regular bevel up plane. Is the new Veritas version’s casting reinforced on the sides to compensate?

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад +2

      I asked our Veritas contact: This is a very common problem with vintage planes because of the grey iron they were made from, the modern ductile iron is strong enough to withstand the forces of a BU plane. This is why few vintage BU Jacks have survived as the stell was not strong enough to withstand the forces involved, also why many of these have been repaired by welding.
      This was not a problem for vintage BD planes as the frog takes the bulk of the stresses, but a BU plane has no frog, the blade is bedded in the body and has to take all the stress. In a JR (or a rabbet block plane) design you remove a lot of structure from the sidewalls to provide the opening, which weakens s the plane.

    Cool video. Do you ever have problems with the brass bushings on the fence? I have a small plow plane, and half the time when I adjust the fence, the wrong half of the brass part comes off. It is not a big deal when it happens, but I think it is one of the drawbacks.
    I just got a number 4 bevel up plane from lee valley, I got it for fun, I have a great number 4 but I like the idea of variety, plus more planes means longer periods between having to sharpen.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад +1

      Thank you! Do you mean that the brass knob comes off?
      I haven't had that happen but I been them really close to being tight. Try loosening and taking the fence off. Tighten the knobs down to where they are almost thigh. Or tighten them down and losses slightly then try it.
      Lemmie know if you meant something different, we have a Veritas contact I can ask.
      The bevel ups are alot of fun! I really enjoy using them!

    • @douglasanderson7260
      @douglasanderson7260 Год назад

      @@BatCaveCreations Yes, for me when I have the knobs screwed down tight and try to unscrew the knob, the insert that holds the knob ends up unscrewing. I am not sure if the mechanism they use is the same in both fences. But at least on the small plow plane it is a brass insert screwed into the body of the plane, that has a screw that the brass knob screws into. So if I tighten it down too much I end up unscrewing the insert in stead of unscrewing the knob.
      But it has been a little while since I have used my plane, so this could be just the part I remember being upset by. And looking at my Stanley 50 & 45 and wondering how did Stanley do it, the answer to this is thumb screws. And thinking Lee Valley must have gotten a good deal on brass at some point. Though that might just be me liking thumbscrews better than a knob that can take the insert out.
      When I get to the point of using it again with the project I am currently working on I may be able to offer a better explanation.

    How well does this one hold up as a standard jack? I'm trying to decide between the skew block AND the low angle jack OR just get the jack rabbet. Just the jack rabbet would be cheaper overall, but if there are drawbacks to have a plane that can do a lot in one package, I'd like to know.
    Thoughts?

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад +1

      I personally would not use the Jack Rabbet as a normal Jack Plane. You gotta worry about the plane lines with the corners of the iron digging into the wood. you do not want to camber the iron on the jack rabbet. So the only time I would use it as a normal jackplane would be on edge grain where the corners wont dig in.
      The benefit of the normal LA Jack is that you can also get different irons with different angles and toothed irons. I see the LA Jack as a workhorse, and the Jack Rabbet as a specialty plane.
      Overall, if you are getting the Skew Block, you don't need the Jack Rabbet right now. maybe down the line for bigger projects. but if you don't have a LA jack or a jack plane at all, 100% go for the LA Jack and not the Jack Rabbet. I hope this helps!

I just don't really see why it WOULDN'T work as a normal LAJ, but it might not be optimal. Having a really hard time deciding.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад +2

      hm you could do different irons with diff angles for the Jack Rabbet, they dont have toothed irons for it tho.
      i feel like if you camber the iron on the jack rabbit then the corners of the mouth it self would dig in? I never tried it tho lol
      honestly, you will be happy with either one. they are both great, if you get the Jack Rabbet and learn it doesnt work the way you would like as a normal Jack then grab the LA Jack, i know that adds more $$ but.... I really like having both. didnt aquire them at the same time. a few years between. I started with the LA Jack then added the Jack Rabbet later when i started getting better at woodworking and saw projects where i could use it. Maybe that helps too?
      If you know for sure, you will use the specialty part of the Jack Rabbet, get it. If you aren't sure you will, get the LA Jack. that is another way to look at it.
