I certainly learned a lot about crabs today and not too long from now I will be setting up a new reef tank and crabs will my choice for the clean up crew. This is the first time ever I watched a video by Hilary and I think she did an excellent presentation and I will be looking forward to seeing and hearing more from her. Thank you.
This is the best and most informative video I’ve found, thank you so much ! Another really cool crab and my personal favorite is the calico crab aka the calico box crab they’re reef safe with caution but are so worth it, though if you keep ornamental clams a calico crab will 100% eat them . I would absolutely love to see a video on them 😊
Great video! I personally think the emerald crab should've been labeled reef safe with caution. I have video of one of mine absolutely destroying(eating) some acans!
I agree i bought two emeralds crabs, one red and one green. Within the first 48hrs i had to remove both because they both targeted the same bubble coral
Exactly! Once they're big they're super aggressive. I had a giant one that got bored of bubble algae after a year or two and started shredding any coral or inverts it could grab.
Thanks for watching. It sounds like you are not alone withe that "reef safe with caution" label. I will consider myself lucky never had an issue with them eating stuff they shouldn't.
@@MrPleco oh gosh that's no good. It makes me wonder if they were just crazy hungry from being at the lfs (Marc Levenson mentioned something about this on one of his live streams), and then when they got to your tank they just went after anything they could.
I mention to Samantha that I will have to do a special feature about them on my social platforms. I know a few people who dislike them because they've had experiences with the crabs getting out, but a good lid can help with that.
I had no idea what a porcelain anemone crab was until after I got one from the fish store. I was confused as to why they seemed to be so attracted to my anemone and a bit alarmed when I saw it inside it! Also, emeralds deserve a bit more than just a reputation as bubble algae eater! When I got mine, he DEVASTATED all kinds of algae! Long, short, it didn't matter, he stripped the rocks bare! No more issues with algae after getting this guy!
Shell on the staghorn hermit is not a photosynthetic coral, it is a hydroid and extremely difficult to maintain long-term. The hermit will use a regular snail shell after it dies.
I will have to go back and look at them again. I've never had success with them using other shells, but I am glad to hear that some of them do. Thank you for sharing and pointing that out.
Ohh! Dang, you're right that is a good one and they are so cool. I think I will have to do a special feature social media feature on them. If you have any good photos of them?
That is so tricky! Depending on the size you need there are a few options... Craft stores occasionally sell them in their beach section (I've specifically had success at Michael's). Some of the online livestock places will have them I think I saw some on Reef cleaners recently, some etsy sellers carry them and another option is sea shell shops. There is on in particular that was really helpful (you can give them measurements and they will look), though I can't find it right now. If you send me a message on Instagram @waterlogged1313 I can let you know if I find it.
I've never met anyone else who has actually kept them, that's a bummer they messed with the snails. I like them in my tank, because they clean but are just big enough that my cowfish doesn't mess with them.
Are you so desperate to see female breasts that you've gone thru all the hobby> aquarium> saltwater> invert> crab videos to make your comment? But wait, now that I click on @pleasuteduma9693 and see your 48 followers, lol, I indeed understand that you are a kid- absorbed in video games & cruising the internet for peeks at women's breasts. Time to step up from behind the internet curtain of anonymity, become a real man, and find something positive to do with your life.
This video is awesome! We can always find info about fish and corals, but nobody ever focuses on crabs! And they are so cool! Thanks Hilary!
Thanks, there are so many different species out there, there is always something new to learn.
Love it! Thank you for guest starring!

Great detailed video! Learned a lot!
Didn't know about the compatibility chart.
Thanks so much for watching and so glad to hear that you learned something new! The compatibility chart is a great resource to keep on hand
Awesome video - for me the best part of the saltwater hobby is the invertebrates. And after watching this video, I can now say - I have crabs!
love those invertebrates
Great video Hilary. Some reefers don’t see how important crabs 🦀 play in our ecosystem.
Thanks, you're right they do play a very important role, and if you have them in your ecosystem, it means less work/cleaning for you.

@@MakerofThingss eek that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that!
Favorite Crab species would be the Sallly Lightfoot crab.Which seems to have fallen out of favor these days. Doc BC
MY favoite as well. Very good cleaners and cause no harm.

Wow! A BRS video without a long haired saltwater guy.
Thanks Hilary for the information and the beautiful video!!!
Great overview!
when using the frozen food like you got from trader joes, do you need to soak them in some type of selcon or nutrient booster?

My favorite crab is an Anemone crab but i dont want any nems. So my comprimise is an acrocrab.
Ooh that sounds like a fun compromise!
What kind of crab do you recommend for long hair algae?
Could you do one on urchins plz
Never had them myself 😂😂 heard they can be a tad itchy lol

When you think about all the crab jokes. 😂 her video was amazing! Sorry so immature
Glad to hear you enjoyed it
Why didn't you mention my favorite? Sally light foot crab.

I have some hermit crabs, after googling 4 hours and talked to my LFS I still can't find extra shells

Blue leg hermit crabs host Caribbean carpet anemones
I guess I been missing some videos.
Thin Striped crabs like to attack turbo snails in my tank 👎👎
Great video though 👍👍

Horseshoe crabs arent related to crabs at all except there both invertebrates there actually more closely related to scorpions
Their blood is also one of the most expensive liquids on the planet... just fyi
Mommy milkers!

Emerald crabs are NOT reef safe. In my experience they are fine until they get big. Then they will destroy soft polyps
They are definitely suspect.
Too bad You didn't mention crabs eat their molts. It's a nad idea to take the molts out.
The information is helpful, the volume of unnecessary words is painful.
Do you have breast implants for your crabs?
Ahh, that's, I guess, supposed to be clever?? Maybe you have a brain implant for your head?
Is it just me? When a woman talks about "crabs" I feel uncomfortable...lol! 🤣
