Instakill anything that is no longer a threat as you are level 17 now and pretty much every threat is a dragon or undead have "auto" success on con saves with advantage/LR/average +11 (or literal auto success if using ported over monster 3.5 rules) AND with resist if not immunity or heal from necrotic damage.

So like, you can make someone roll 10d10, lets see this is level 17 so you have 17 ki points combine each hit with stun and flurry you can make a target roll to not die, roll to not be stunnedx4 and if they dont die deal (10d10)x4 necrotic damage all in your first turn against them- and then be useless. oh and you can also Wait to trigger it until someone on your team makes them have worse con saves.(though I dont know what spells or abilities can cause that)
@@thaynes9799 What do you mean it takes and action to force the save? It doesn't, you can literally use all attacks (2 attacks + 2 furry of blows attacks) and make stun on every one of them if you have enough ki points and you hit the AC
@@kamilidczak1583 No. The person meant that you have to sacrifice your possible four attacks on a turn to use your action to make the tremors stop and thus make them make the save. Why else would they bring up the 10d10 requieing an action? Later on, any boss you are fighting is most likely going to succeed that save. 10d10 is still pretty wicked for an action though.

My first game consisted of all monk party that acted like power rangers. I joined them mid campaign, so in story I was just some street urchin that held pretty well in a brawl against two other homeless kids. They decided to adopt my character and train him as their successor. Good times.
@@briansanders8122 Some, yeah. We had two monks of the same subclass. Two remaining monks had different subclasses, and I also had a different subclass. So there was only 5 of us (I was the fifth player) There was a sixth monk (technically the first considering they had a role of the red ranger), they were an NPC and a major character in the 1-3 level prologue campaign that I never witnessed (I joined in the mids of the second campaign). That monk NPC died at the beginning of the second campaign, and near the end of the story we did fight his reanimated corpse. He did almost TPK us, knocked 3 out of 5 players including me, I was the second to go down, and only because the first player to go down only had 1/4 of the health XD. Two remaining players had to fall back to a room with a bottomless pit in it, and an old bridge running through it (it was a temple to an ancient abyss god who's name was long forgotten, there was a LOT of homebrew in that game). Player 1 and player 3 could not beat the reanimated corpse of their old friend, so player 3 tackled the undead monk off the bridge, and they both fell into the bottomless pit never to be seen again. That did cost us our victory over the BBEG, they completed the ritual that would awake the ancient evil 1000 years in the future. We ended up continuing playing in that world, we had to move to gurps due to it being set in modern times now, 1999 specifically. (It was like a spin on YIIK but with cthulhu) The last campaign we did took place 160 years after the events of the 1999 campaign, trying to figure out why the world collapsed. Anyway, sorry about the long comment, I guess I got overexcited. XD Have a nice day you all. :)
One of my friends is playing an awakened koala rogue and actually has an ability that gives her advantage on attacks from above on unsuspecting targets. She's used it once and instantly knocked out a couple of goblins.
Litch: I've studied magic to learn a rutual that let's me cast away my humanity to gain immortality! lvl 17 Drunken master monk: I just got drunk and punched people untill i stopped ageing! (also according to the rules, alcohol counts as poison, so Drunken Masters can't get drunk)
That settles it, one of my next characters is gonna be a True Neutral monk that was studying to become a Necromancer because he wanted to live forever and found out that monks get the same thing without constantly being hunted by adventurers.
@@sannogaming4766 Well any monk can use weapons. It’s just Kensei gets more options. Short swords, daggers, and quarterstaff (and some others maybe). Those r all monk weapons. In fact using a quarterstaff is actually good for u for quite some time cause u can do a d8 worth of dmg instead of doing a d4 starting out. And dagger gives u a range weapon. And they all go up in dmg as well so that dagger will go up as your martial dmg goes up. The only problem is that unless your a kensei only your fists become magical automatically. But still don’t say non kensei monks don’t use weapon or shouldn’t. It some ways it’s good to (as for reasons I just talked about). And yea I know this is a little old but meh.
Having also taught D&D to small children I can see where you're coming from on the "monks don't need equipment" front. The way most my players figured out their AC with armor is that I would figure it out for them and I had to walk them through the damage for at least a couple different weapons. If you'd never played the game at all a level 1 monk is probably as simple as it gets.
@@horserage I wouldn't even say the power is lacking. They don't HAVE to use the 1d4 monk die except for unarmed attacks. They can use a quarterstaff as a monk weapon and deal 1d8, plus their bonus action unarmed attacks. Then they get some cool utility class features and some absolutely broken class features (looking at you Stunning Strike and Empty Body) And then they get a subclass, which are all good in their own right.* *Except for Way of the Four Elements. Doesn't live up to the fantasy, far worse than every other subclass. Homebrew that crap. Start by reducing most of the abilities ki cost by one, and then give them more than four abilities. I'd double it. Maybe also give them an elemental cantrip. And probably expand the list of options by literally adapting most of the spells from Elemental Evil. If they want to be spend 10 ki points to cast Investiture of Wind, I'm not going to stop them.

oh man if they think stunning four enemies at once at the cost of all your ki (the resource fueling nearly all limited-use monk activities) is insane wait until they hear about a 3rd level wizard casting web once to restrain as many or more enemies and possibly for multiple rounds and for the cost of one 2nd level spell slot
Exaaactly. People out there complaining that the monk has broken abilities while completely ignoring things like warlocks and wizards which have basically the same abilities but aren't limited by having a ridiculously small number of ki points.

As someone who's first DND experience was with playing monk, yeah, I agree. It'ss super nice for a new player to not have to worry about organizing crap and weapons. It's nice to instead of working around a million weapons and different things and just say; "I'm finna deck this nerd!" Simple isn't bad, it means there are options for people who'd rather worry about some other stuff like roleplay or just slowly learning more about the game. @@kylepessell1350 I have a character that's exactly that. Hits CAN be calculated with STR instead of DEX, and if you go FIRST barbarian, you can calculate your AC with unarmored defense and get the hitdice of that class. So you can get by with a STR monk.

@@futuza I mean that's good but Empty Body is stronger in my opinion. It gives you Greater Invisibility, doesn't require being hit or hitting so you have more combat options, and you only lose resistance to Force. Not to mention the ability to use Astral Projection has a lot of utility.
YEEEEEES he was a homebrew race a half giant named lemme gedistrat and he was 13 feet tall so he couldn't reach down far enough to punch anyone but when he did kick he would use his quartersatff which in this case was just a large tree branch and use it like a broomstick and shew people away like they were rats
Since my monks use spears and quarter staves (1d8 versatile damage by using it two handed), kicking is the most logical way to use a unarmed strike while having both hands occupied. I also include shoulders, elbows, knees and headbutts for more options.

I think the "fighters are easier than monks" idea comes from earlier editions, where monks had a huge set of skills that all had to be rolled for separately, whereas literally all fighters could to was hit things.
4:45 - compressed air can fucking kill you before you even hit the floor. When you deal with testing high-pressure valves and components, water and hydraulic oil failures will just get you a little wet/dirty and no one cares about major safety precautions; air will punch a hole clean through your skull (and give you a pulmonary embolism for good measure) and you won't see an air test stand that isn't behind cinder blocks and bulletproof glass. Still not as bad as high-pressure/high-temperature steam that will instantaneously boil everyone in the room alive (read up on the USS Iwo Jima [LPH-2] where they had a catastrophic steam valve failure that killed 10 people almost instantly), but still lethal af.
i think the pass without trace is even cooler, add +10 to your roll.. which cant be less than 10... plus your skill mod that should be around +17, so a minimun of 37
I'll go you one better. In a campaign I'm in one of our players is a level 11 Drow with 8 levels of Shadow Monk, 3 levels of Sorcerer. Because fuck *everything*.
I think it may have been too much for his mind to take. Invisibility AND astral projection as BASE abilities? Sidenote, timeless body doesn't actually prevent ageing, it just makes you immune to it's drawbacks and you can't be magically aged, as well as no longer needing food or drink.
One of best monk abilities IMO. 4 ki points + 1 action to become invisible and resistant to all damage (except force) for 1 minute. So you have advantage on all attacks and other people have disadvantage on attack against you. Your invisibility can't be ended by ANY means, even falling unconscious. Any fight should probably consist of running around lighting fast, invisible to all attackers, bopping people to your hearts content. Faerie fire is the only way to get you, but with Dex proficiency, the ability to reroll failed saves, and the likelihood that any caster within a five mile radius is about to get BOPPED, it's probably not going to stick.

@@gotenksta I watched a 1 shot where the monk used stunning strike on an [undead?] dragon. Spending 1 Ki to burn it's legendary actions, allowing the rest of the group to get their big spells and abilities in without being roadblocked. That is seriously worth the trade of Ki points. 3 Ki points to allow the group the opportunities to get THEIR stuff off, is powerful.

7:37 You could stun on all those attacks at level 5, at which point you have no Ki left for the entire fight. Meanwhile the Wizard uses one of their many 2nd level spell slots to use *Hold Person* to paralyze your opponents for multiple turns.
I think you are sweeping several things under the rug here. 1) the wizard could only use hold person max 5 times a day. the monk is the same so they are equal in number of uses. (Wiz does get more if they use 3rd lvl slots, but that is a lot of slots and turns) 2) the monk deals 1d6 + Dex on each of those attacks. The wizard deals no damage. 3) if the target makes the first save: the wizard is out a spell slot and a Action; leaving them to try to make up for it IF they have a bonus action they can use. The monk still has 3 attacks left (which is 3 more chances to stun + 3d6 + 3*Dex) 4) while the wizard can hold it up to 6turns, the opponent gets a save at the end of their turn, each round. The monk’s lasts until the monk’s next turn. That is a full round of advantage for the allies. If it is the first strike, boom, 3 attacks with advantage. I mean yeah the wiz has a wide variety of uses but the monk has the advantage in the combat scenario (not so much a peaceful one)
What about Hypnotic pattern? Just mass stun all of the minions, take them out one by one and the effect doesn't even end at the end of their turn or after a saving throw, it only ends if they take damage or if someone uses their action.

Hold person is pretty much regarded as a meh spell for spellcasters cause there's better spells to be flinging around... ever heard of Fear, hypnotic pattern, fireball, invisibility, FLY and others? Like really you're comparing your most current powerful ability at level 5 to something the spellcaster has been able to do for 2 levels and better because all hits within 5 feet ARE CRITS... And they can do a lot of different stuff too depending on the sotuation.

yea this is the kind of stuff that makes me dislike videos like these, which portray a class as wildly different than it is, be it overpowered or underpowered. Monks have to compete in the "martial" category with fighters, barbarians, and paladins primarily. Compared to those, they offer higher mobility and crowd control, lower equipment reliance, and weirder durability like Deflect Missiles and Slow Fall, but they lose out on sheer durability (Hit points, AC) and majorly on damage after low levels, due to an inability to use Great Weapon Master. If you compare them to the Rogue, they're less useful out of combat due to a lack of expertise, but more durable in combat and trade Sneak Attack's lackluster DPR capabilities for Stunning Fist's lock-down potential. So they're sort of a hybrid between a frontline martial and a backline skill monkey. Open Hand makes them more frontline-y while shadow makes them more utility-y, and 4Elements throws a bit of caster in there because why not? They are in no way overpowered unless your party is frequently denied, stripped of, or never given adequate equipment.
Why should you ever ban a martial if casters are a thing? I'd understand if your dm had a problem with wall of force, force cage, wish, simulacrum, leomunds tiny hut, polymorph, animate dead, counterspell, shield, mirror image, true polymorph or animate objects or something but banning a martial class? Doesn't make sense to me.

In this video the only thing you can get out of it is that monks are easier than fighters.
As a Gm I balance rogue by punishing anyone unfortunate enough to roll a nat 1 in something they have reliable talent in and/or expertise. I also house rule that crits cannot be effected by the lucky feat. As a rogue you get reliable talent and expertise. I hate Marry Sues and I believe that a game with no stakes is no fun so I have to make a way for there to be stakes in a game with all classes I don’t ban (I’ve only banned Mystic).
@@xavierspirit1811 I would have a serious problem with nat 1s not activating reliable talent. Nat 1s suck. They are not fun for players. I do them very differently at the best of times, usually requiring a saving throw instead of something bad automatically happening. I also almost always give other members of the party a chance to react.
My friend did the math, and if you play an Astral Self Monk 17/Samurai Fighter 3, you can get up to 9 attacks in a turn, all with advantage. They'd be radiant or necrotic damage and one of the attacks is 2d10. With max wisdom, it'll end up 10d10+50 damage.
@@jmclaughlin2009 couldn't you get 14 attacks (6 with astral body +1 from the samurais turn advantage into another attack ability, + another 6 with action surge + 1 from samurai again)
In 3.5 I made a ranger who could make 7 attacks with 15/20 crit range (dual wielding rappers with all of the feats for it). It caused a decrease to the attack bonus, but it was worth it. It was only like a -4 which I used weapon finesse I think to make it just my base attack+masterwork because my dex was 18

I don't think stunning strike is all that OP. I mean... if you are level 5 and wants to use 5 ki points to have 4 attacks and every attack having a chance of stunning, alright. But you now have no more ki points and you still have to keep going on the current fight and any other you have before resting. Sure it's great to stun lock that boss monster but it's still very resource heavy. It's a bit more OP on later levels but monsters should also be able to make those saves more often, so a level 15 monk can try it a lot more but won't necessarily get that many successes.
The problem with stunning strike is that you can do it for EVERYONE of your attacks. While yes if you only got it on the fourth try you’ve used 4 ki for 1 stun, but you can also get it on your first try. In which case you’ve used 1 ki to stop your opponent from having a turn and in 5e where turn economy is the most important thing you start to see why this ability is broken. But don’t get me wrong, this ability in no way make the monk OP, In fact this is one of the monks only good ability’s and it would cripple the monk if you nerfed it
@@thomasshepherd8909 There is a way to balance this, the dm only has to, not roll the con save instantly or not tell you whether the save was successful or not, that way if you want to almost guarantee the stun you have to spend all your ki, or you have to just hope, because technically your character wouldn’t know whether the stunning strike had worked anyway until the opponent tried to move.
*also me being a Four Elements monk who spams cantrips when I'm out of ki. Helps that we don't have slots so we can cast 2nd level spells easy. That extra d8 onna shocking grasp be clutch
Monk almost never comes up for optimized OP builds and stuff but I honestly think Monk is one of the best single classes in the game along with bard and druid.
Definitely one of the classes that is best at self sustainment. In combat it has many features that keep it alive, and out of combat you start shunning things most people consider necessary for living while also being able to communicate wherever you are for the things you still need.
Just an Average Dragon Maybe go bladesinger if u have enough intelligence and u could slap your intelligence on their as well when your in your bladesong. Idk if it works but it’s not considered unarmored defense so I think it does. And if u do u could also get shield as a spell which last for the whole round and not just for 1 attack (and u can do it when u know the enemy hits u and not sure if u can do that with defensive duelist). U could also pick up absorb elements for when the enemy tries to hit u with some things that aren’t attack rolls.
@@Mare_Man it depends on if it is considered another way to calculate ac or a bonus to AC. Considering unarmored defense for barbarian and monk don't stack, bladesinging likely doesn't stack either. Most things absorb elements will block are dex saves and you already have evasion and expertise in all saving throws at high levels. If you're really worried about getting hit use you ki points to dodge as a bonus action and don't bother with shield. If you're going to take a dip at all do 2 levels of warlock for hex and invocations because hex + flurry of blows does a shit ton of damage.

As someone playing a monk for the first time on my second ever game i habe to say its been really easy (thanks to my teammates and DM) I was a druid the first time and it was....alot lol now im a monk and I love it! Story: last week I had the last hit on our BB and I missed two of my three hits BUT my hit was a CRIT and I rolled max on mt damage! Took him down and won the battle! My proudest moment so far lol

Dirty Diamond Also the Kensei monk I feel is the easiest to multiclass out of (which I always do), especially at the lower lvs. I mean I went a lv into rogue and I’m only lv 4 (I mean I can use a raiper which will do more dmg then my fists, especially with sneak attack). I will be going swashbuckler for my rogue subclass. I like the Kensei but I honestly don’t care if it’s good or not.

Not really. Because you also have to manage resistances, rage damage, managing the aspects that stop you from raging and all that. Barbarian is easy but there are some elements that a new player would struggle with.
@@palikia3233 I disagree, there isn't really anything to manage there. For 90% of the time, the common barbarian will rage for the whole time of every encounter, so you can just note on your character sheet that you have resistance to people hitting you and a +2 to damage (the DM will tell you in half a year that the +2 is now a +3). Your rage ending early also only occures in the very rare circumstance, that you did neither receive nor deal damage for a whole round. The only exception to this is, when you are saving up your Rages for the later encounters in a long dungeon, in which case you should come prepares anyway (aka. at least take the time to read your class description)
From a functionality perspective, Monks are very similar to Barbarians. Both use melee attacks and do not use range attacks. Both are lightly armored or wear no armor. OK, not exactly the same, but very similar, none the less.

Eamonn Ryan what are you talking about obviously the mystic is the easiest class it’s only a 25 page packet that’s nothing compared to how complex the barbarian is. I mean look at it, he has to keep track of his rage rounds and his lucky d12 and I think you’ll find that’s a lot more complex than the mystic.
I've been playing monks for years and they rock. so much room for freedom and creative play. had a run with a lvl 20 and getting profiency on all saves makes you nigh untouchable in big boss battles.

oh and you can also Wait to trigger it until someone on your team makes them have worse con saves.(though I dont know what spells or abilities can cause that)
@@thaynes9799 What do you mean it takes and action to force the save? It doesn't, you can literally use all attacks (2 attacks + 2 furry of blows attacks) and make stun on every one of them if you have enough ki points and you hit the AC

@@kamilidczak1583 No. The person meant that you have to sacrifice your possible four attacks on a turn to use your action to make the tremors stop and thus make them make the save. Why else would they bring up the 10d10 requieing an action? Later on, any boss you are fighting is most likely going to succeed that save. 10d10 is still pretty wicked for an action though.

My first game consisted of all monk party that acted like power rangers.
I joined them mid campaign, so in story I was just some street urchin that held pretty well in a brawl against two other homeless kids.
They decided to adopt my character and train him as their successor.

We had two monks of the same subclass.
Two remaining monks had different subclasses, and I also had a different subclass.
So there was only 5 of us (I was the fifth player)
There was a sixth monk (technically the first considering they had a role of the red ranger), they were an NPC and a major character in the 1-3 level prologue campaign that I never witnessed (I joined in the mids of the second campaign).
That monk NPC died at the beginning of the second campaign, and near the end of the story we did fight his reanimated corpse.
He did almost TPK us, knocked 3 out of 5 players including me, I was the second to go down, and only because the first player to go down only had 1/4 of the health XD.
Two remaining players had to fall back to a room with a bottomless pit in it, and an old bridge running through it (it was a temple to an ancient abyss god who's name was long forgotten, there was a LOT of homebrew in that game).
Player 1 and player 3 could not beat the reanimated corpse of their old friend, so player 3 tackled the undead monk off the bridge, and they both fell into the bottomless pit never to be seen again.
That did cost us our victory over the BBEG, they completed the ritual that would awake the ancient evil 1000 years in the future.
We ended up continuing playing in that world, we had to move to gurps due to it being set in modern times now, 1999 specifically.
(It was like a spin on YIIK but with cthulhu)
The last campaign we did took place 160 years after the events of the 1999 campaign, trying to figure out why the world collapsed.
Anyway, sorry about the long comment, I guess I got overexcited. XD

@@sannogaming4766 Well any monk can use weapons. It’s just Kensei gets more options. Short swords, daggers, and quarterstaff (and some others maybe). Those r all monk weapons. In fact using a quarterstaff is actually good for u for quite some time cause u can do a d8 worth of dmg instead of doing a d4 starting out. And dagger gives u a range weapon. And they all go up in dmg as well so that dagger will go up as your martial dmg goes up. The only problem is that unless your a kensei only your fists become magical automatically. But still don’t say non kensei monks don’t use weapon or shouldn’t. It some ways it’s good to (as for reasons I just talked about).
And yea I know this is a little old but meh.

Having also taught D&D to small children I can see where you're coming from on the "monks don't need equipment" front. The way most my players figured out their AC with armor is that I would figure it out for them and I had to walk them through the damage for at least a couple different weapons. If you'd never played the game at all a level 1 monk is probably as simple as it gets.
Monk is easy for people who aren't children and can understand how to fucking read the book.
But the power being lacking, is annoying.

@@horserage I wouldn't even say the power is lacking. They don't HAVE to use the 1d4 monk die except for unarmed attacks. They can use a quarterstaff as a monk weapon and deal 1d8, plus their bonus action unarmed attacks.
Then they get some cool utility class features and some absolutely broken class features (looking at you Stunning Strike and Empty Body)
And then they get a subclass, which are all good in their own right.*
*Except for Way of the Four Elements. Doesn't live up to the fantasy, far worse than every other subclass. Homebrew that crap. Start by reducing most of the abilities ki cost by one, and then give them more than four abilities. I'd double it. Maybe also give them an elemental cantrip. And probably expand the list of options by literally adapting most of the spells from Elemental Evil. If they want to be spend 10 ki points to cast Investiture of Wind, I'm not going to stop them.

As someone who's first DND experience was with playing monk, yeah, I agree. It'ss super nice for a new player to not have to worry about organizing crap and weapons. It's nice to instead of working around a million weapons and different things and just say; "I'm finna deck this nerd!" Simple isn't bad, it means there are options for people who'd rather worry about some other stuff like roleplay or just slowly learning more about the game. @@kylepessell1350 I have a character that's exactly that. Hits CAN be calculated with STR instead of DEX, and if you go FIRST barbarian, you can calculate your AC with unarmored defense and get the hitdice of that class. So you can get by with a STR monk.
@@Shouziroku you can calculate AC with either Wis or con with monk/barbarian regardless of which one you pick first. You just can't use both at the same time.

@@futuza I mean that's good but Empty Body is stronger in my opinion. It gives you Greater Invisibility, doesn't require being hit or hitting so you have more combat options, and you only lose resistance to Force. Not to mention the ability to use Astral Projection has a lot of utility.

YEEEEEES he was a homebrew race a half giant named lemme gedistrat and he was 13 feet tall so he couldn't reach down far enough to punch anyone but when he did kick he would use his quartersatff which in this case was just a large tree branch and use it like a broomstick and shew people away like they were rats
Since my monks use spears and quarter staves (1d8 versatile damage by using it two handed), kicking is the most logical way to use a unarmed strike while having both hands occupied.
I also include shoulders, elbows, knees and headbutts for more options.
The Doomslayer whenever you play monks I hope you get plenty of glory kills

I think the "fighters are easier than monks" idea comes from earlier editions, where monks had a huge set of skills that all had to be rolled for separately, whereas literally all fighters could to was hit things.
4:45 - compressed air can fucking kill you before you even hit the floor. When you deal with testing high-pressure valves and components, water and hydraulic oil failures will just get you a little wet/dirty and no one cares about major safety precautions; air will punch a hole clean through your skull (and give you a pulmonary embolism for good measure) and you won't see an air test stand that isn't behind cinder blocks and bulletproof glass. Still not as bad as high-pressure/high-temperature steam that will instantaneously boil everyone in the room alive (read up on the USS Iwo Jima [LPH-2] where they had a catastrophic steam valve failure that killed 10 people almost instantly), but still lethal af.

I'll go you one better. In a campaign I'm in one of our players is a level 11 Drow with 8 levels of Shadow Monk, 3 levels of Sorcerer. Because fuck *everything*.

Sidenote, timeless body doesn't actually prevent ageing, it just makes you immune to it's drawbacks and you can't be magically aged, as well as no longer needing food or drink.
One of best monk abilities IMO. 4 ki points + 1 action to become invisible and resistant to all damage (except force) for 1 minute. So you have advantage on all attacks and other people have disadvantage on attack against you. Your invisibility can't be ended by ANY means, even falling unconscious. Any fight should probably consist of running around lighting fast, invisible to all attackers, bopping people to your hearts content.
Faerie fire is the only way to get you, but with Dex proficiency, the ability to reroll failed saves, and the likelihood that any caster within a five mile radius is about to get BOPPED, it's probably not going to stick.

@@gotenksta I watched a 1 shot where the monk used stunning strike on an [undead?] dragon. Spending 1 Ki to burn it's legendary actions, allowing the rest of the group to get their big spells and abilities in without being roadblocked. That is seriously worth the trade of Ki points. 3 Ki points to allow the group the opportunities to get THEIR stuff off, is powerful.
I played monk until 30th level (epic level supplement) and from 1st level to 30, I could count the amount of times my stun worked on my fingers.
I can only think of the neighbors saying "Theres that guy again walking out with that same book."

7:37 You could stun on all those attacks at level 5, at which point you have no Ki left for the entire fight. Meanwhile the Wizard uses one of their many 2nd level spell slots to use *Hold Person* to paralyze your opponents for multiple turns.
I think you are sweeping several things under the rug here.
1) the wizard could only use hold person max 5 times a day. the monk is the same so they are equal in number of uses. (Wiz does get more if they use 3rd lvl slots, but that is a lot of slots and turns)
2) the monk deals 1d6 + Dex on each of those attacks. The wizard deals no damage.
3) if the target makes the first save: the wizard is out a spell slot and a Action; leaving them to try to make up for it IF they have a bonus action they can use. The monk still has 3 attacks left (which is 3 more chances to stun + 3d6 + 3*Dex)
4) while the wizard can hold it up to 6turns, the opponent gets a save at the end of their turn, each round. The monk’s lasts until the monk’s next turn. That is a full round of advantage for the allies. If it is the first strike, boom, 3 attacks with advantage. I mean yeah the wiz has a wide variety of uses but the monk has the advantage in the combat scenario (not so much a peaceful one)

What about Hypnotic pattern? Just mass stun all of the minions, take them out one by one and the effect doesn't even end at the end of their turn or after a saving throw, it only ends if they take damage or if someone uses their action.

Hold person is pretty much regarded as a meh spell for spellcasters cause there's better spells to be flinging around... ever heard of Fear, hypnotic pattern, fireball, invisibility, FLY and others? Like really you're comparing your most current powerful ability at level 5 to something the spellcaster has been able to do for 2 levels and better because all hits within 5 feet ARE CRITS... And they can do a lot of different stuff too depending on the sotuation.

yea this is the kind of stuff that makes me dislike videos like these, which portray a class as wildly different than it is, be it overpowered or underpowered.
Monks have to compete in the "martial" category with fighters, barbarians, and paladins primarily. Compared to those, they offer higher mobility and crowd control, lower equipment reliance, and weirder durability like Deflect Missiles and Slow Fall, but they lose out on sheer durability (Hit points, AC) and majorly on damage after low levels, due to an inability to use Great Weapon Master.
If you compare them to the Rogue, they're less useful out of combat due to a lack of expertise, but more durable in combat and trade Sneak Attack's lackluster DPR capabilities for Stunning Fist's lock-down potential.
So they're sort of a hybrid between a frontline martial and a backline skill monkey. Open Hand makes them more frontline-y while shadow makes them more utility-y, and 4Elements throws a bit of caster in there because why not?
They are in no way overpowered unless your party is frequently denied, stripped of, or never given adequate equipment.

Why should you ever ban a martial if casters are a thing? I'd understand if your dm had a problem with wall of force, force cage, wish, simulacrum, leomunds tiny hut, polymorph, animate dead, counterspell, shield, mirror image, true polymorph or animate objects or something but banning a martial class? Doesn't make sense to me.

As a Gm I balance rogue by punishing anyone unfortunate enough to roll a nat 1 in something they have reliable talent in and/or expertise. I also house rule that crits cannot be effected by the lucky feat. As a rogue you get reliable talent and expertise. I hate Marry Sues and I believe that a game with no stakes is no fun so I have to make a way for there to be stakes in a game with all classes I don’t ban (I’ve only banned Mystic).
@@xavierspirit1811 I would have a serious problem with nat 1s not activating reliable talent. Nat 1s suck. They are not fun for players. I do them very differently at the best of times, usually requiring a saving throw instead of something bad automatically happening. I also almost always give other members of the party a chance to react.

My friend did the math, and if you play an Astral Self Monk 17/Samurai Fighter 3, you can get up to 9 attacks in a turn, all with advantage. They'd be radiant or necrotic damage and one of the attacks is 2d10. With max wisdom, it'll end up 10d10+50 damage.
@@jmclaughlin2009 couldn't you get 14 attacks (6 with astral body +1 from the samurais turn advantage into another attack ability, + another 6 with action surge + 1 from samurai again)
In 3.5 I made a ranger who could make 7 attacks with 15/20 crit range (dual wielding rappers with all of the feats for it). It caused a decrease to the attack bonus, but it was worth it. It was only like a -4 which I used weapon finesse I think to make it just my base attack+masterwork because my dex was 18

I don't think stunning strike is all that OP. I mean... if you are level 5 and wants to use 5 ki points to have 4 attacks and every attack having a chance of stunning, alright. But you now have no more ki points and you still have to keep going on the current fight and any other you have before resting.
Sure it's great to stun lock that boss monster but it's still very resource heavy. It's a bit more OP on later levels but monsters should also be able to make those saves more often, so a level 15 monk can try it a lot more but won't necessarily get that many successes.
The problem with stunning strike is that you can do it for EVERYONE of your attacks. While yes if you only got it on the fourth try you’ve used 4 ki for 1 stun, but you can also get it on your first try. In which case you’ve used 1 ki to stop your opponent from having a turn and in 5e where turn economy is the most important thing you start to see why this ability is broken.
But don’t get me wrong, this ability in no way make the monk OP, In fact this is one of the monks only good ability’s and it would cripple the monk if you nerfed it

@@thomasshepherd8909 There is a way to balance this, the dm only has to, not roll the con save instantly or not tell you whether the save was successful or not, that way if you want to almost guarantee the stun you have to spend all your ki, or you have to just hope, because technically your character wouldn’t know whether the stunning strike had worked anyway until the opponent tried to move.

Monk almost never comes up for optimized OP builds and stuff but I honestly think Monk is one of the best single classes in the game along with bard and druid.
Definitely one of the classes that is best at self sustainment. In combat it has many features that keep it alive, and out of combat you start shunning things most people consider necessary for living while also being able to communicate wherever you are for the things you still need.
A Kensei monk with maxed Dex and Wis and Defensive Duelist can get 28 AC on reaction
Just an Average Dragon Maybe go bladesinger if u have enough intelligence and u could slap your intelligence on their as well when your in your bladesong. Idk if it works but it’s not considered unarmored defense so I think it does. And if u do u could also get shield as a spell which last for the whole round and not just for 1 attack (and u can do it when u know the enemy hits u and not sure if u can do that with defensive duelist). U could also pick up absorb elements for when the enemy tries to hit u with some things that aren’t attack rolls.

@@Mare_Man it depends on if it is considered another way to calculate ac or a bonus to AC. Considering unarmored defense for barbarian and monk don't stack, bladesinging likely doesn't stack either. Most things absorb elements will block are dex saves and you already have evasion and expertise in all saving throws at high levels. If you're really worried about getting hit use you ki points to dodge as a bonus action and don't bother with shield. If you're going to take a dip at all do 2 levels of warlock for hex and invocations because hex + flurry of blows does a shit ton of damage.

As someone playing a monk for the first time on my second ever game i habe to say its been really easy (thanks to my teammates and DM) I was a druid the first time and it was....alot lol now im a monk and I love it!
Story: last week I had the last hit on our BB and I missed two of my three hits BUT my hit was a CRIT and I rolled max on mt damage! Took him down and won the battle! My proudest moment so far lol

I was gonna play one in a campaign but the dm doesn’t have swords coast so I wasn’t able to (so I had to pick the only other one that looked interesting to me and that was kensei).

Dirty Diamond Also the Kensei monk I feel is the easiest to multiclass out of (which I always do), especially at the lower lvs. I mean I went a lv into rogue and I’m only lv 4 (I mean I can use a raiper which will do more dmg then my fists, especially with sneak attack). I will be going swashbuckler for my rogue subclass. I like the Kensei but I honestly don’t care if it’s good or not.

Not really. Because you also have to manage resistances, rage damage, managing the aspects that stop you from raging and all that. Barbarian is easy but there are some elements that a new player would struggle with.
@@palikia3233 I disagree, there isn't really anything to manage there. For 90% of the time, the common barbarian will rage for the whole time of every encounter, so you can just note on your character sheet that you have resistance to people hitting you and a +2 to damage (the DM will tell you in half a year that the +2 is now a +3). Your rage ending early also only occures in the very rare circumstance, that you did neither receive nor deal damage for a whole round.
The only exception to this is, when you are saving up your Rages for the later encounters in a long dungeon, in which case you should come prepares anyway (aka. at least take the time to read your class description)

From a functionality perspective, Monks are very similar to Barbarians. Both use melee attacks and do not use range attacks. Both are lightly armored or wear no armor. OK, not exactly the same, but very similar, none the less.
Yeah you're right they're incredibly similar. Unarmored defense and movement, being anime as shit, melee, extra attack, never dying, going into the astral pl... wait.

Eamonn Ryan what are you talking about obviously the mystic is the easiest class it’s only a 25 page packet that’s nothing compared to how complex the barbarian is. I mean look at it, he has to keep track of his rage rounds and his lucky d12 and I think you’ll find that’s a lot more complex than the mystic.

I've been playing monks for years and they rock. so much room for freedom and creative play. had a run with a lvl 20 and getting profiency on all saves makes you nigh untouchable in big boss battles.
