Haha, this is my first time playing a Paladin... I’m kinda new, haha. But my character is a Moon Goddess incarnate named; Rehtaeh. The whole purpose of her character is to get big, destroy the cursed relics that are causing not only this world, but ALSO causing her Sister-Goddess pain. Then she is meant to re-ascend into the heavens when the mission is over, and go back to being just a side-goddess. But... because the ritual that was supposed to bring her into the world much sooner was screwed up, she ended up getting trapped inside the body of a child, and losing her memories. She then remained asleep for thousands of years until being awaken by the current party members. Lots of crap went down after her awakening, and now she has a platonic older brother named Theren, he’s an elf and also kind of the leader of the group. She also AGED up, because magic capsules apparently exist? So now she’s a big girl, and I’m pretty sure Theren sees her as a bit more than a SISTER now.

They may think you are merely a dream or something like that. Another theoretical possible occurrence is you eliminate your patron & absorb all their power becoming something else.

One of the ways I played a paladin was I made him the "judge jury and executioner" of his diety and his sole reason to stay with the party was to travel and find those that opposed his diety.
Queue a random npc that casually disapproved of my God and my character shot him the meanest glare and the party all collectively went "oh fuck someone stop the paladin from committing murder in the middle of daylight"

Then ask your dm why there isn't more heavier consequence for just being murder hobos? You can legitimately do this. If their killing civilians. make it harder for them to get away without penalty, like more guards or tough situations if they resort to violence, instead of simply using role playing skills. Make the players know there are more options then just violence, but if they always wish to do so and it's against your character. You have to either opt out the paladin from the party and play something else as the party isn't lawful good or the campaign narrative could call for more darker moral choices. OR, Push the narrative of doing good and actually chastise the parties actions, get them locked up or have them arrested by your Paladin. Do what a paladin should do. Stop evil people from doing evil things, or don't be a paladin. Unless you wanna play same evil paladin? idk lol

    • @JohnvanCapel
      @JohnvanCapel 2 года назад +42

This. Paladins are only half-casters, so spell slots aren't a resource to be taken lightly.
If you have more than one combat per in-game day, which you *really* should, odds are the Paladin is going to have to start thinking tactically about which enemies really deserve that kick in the goolies. A Rogue, by comparison, gets to add *their* kick to the goolies to pretty much every attack they make, even if there's nothing but combat for an in-game hour (600 rounds).
That said, this video is parody and kind-of-deliberately goes on a surface reading. Check the Warlock class guide by this same person, that one makes it as obvious as it can be.

He uses a great hammer that deploys wind magic to increase damage(aka rocket hammer), howls when he swings it and it’s how he got his name, he follows his church’s orders, to a T, it is his biggest flaw, most of the time, he’s used for their bidding, he’s light hearted when he’s not in combat, but when combat happens, no one is spared, ALL die, he empathizes with his enemies but he also pities them, he’s extremely fun and I get along with the party real well

Paladin is a fascinating and interesting class, but the issue with it is almost exactly what you pointed out; but rather than it problem being paladins being "supposed" to be LG, it's that nobody knows what LG is.
Lawful Good does not always follow the law. It does not obey the law to a T. This is NL. Lawful good, instead, believes in the spirit of the law, that it was made to serve man and help society.
In addition, it is character to character how a paladin can go about acting these beliefs out. Not everybody viciously blasts people with their beliefs, and the same should be said for paladins.
When you play a paladin, focus not on the idea of lawful good (most people think party cop who starts attacking the rogue when they steal someones shit); focus on someone who wants to help people, because that is what the paladin is about.
How do you help people? That is up to the oath. Devotion, and crown protect. Vengeance smites evil. Redemption redeems those willing.
Keep this in mind and you'll create an incredible paladin. You don't even have to try and be evil and soil the name of paladins to do so, just work a little harder to actually understand the alignment system.
Final thing: Paladins are not perfect. They will try (usually try their hardest) to do the best, or the right thing; but this means different things to many different people. Mistakes are only human. Or dwarven. Or orcish. Or whatever else.
tl;df, none of the actually tenets of your oath, the "rules" you have to follow are that difficult to follow, nor should they cause the death of the party unless the player is playing them lawful stupid.
You can make a very cool holy templar! But play them as an actual person rather than an angry, buff catholic. Give them real emotions and have them react as a normal person would to things.

Question - what do you think of the Oath of Conquest? Purely evil, has potential to be more neutral? How would you go about looking at that oath? I find the idea that normal Conquest Paladins see Hell Knights (or Conquest Paladins who have devoted themselves to devils) as ones who have strayed too far on the path. I like seeing Conquest as an extreme solution, one that a paladin applies out of necessity rather than applying at all instances.

You have a clear sense of community and are willing to do wrong in benefit of your town.
It actually works well with Scourge aasimar.
“I have to keep them together, be their beacon and unrelenting force of ruthlessness to those who dare corrupt them”
I made one that was specifically made to cross the line so the humans won’t have to.
She was tasked to do evil if it would benefit mankind. So she is so loving and huggable to everybody she meets but doesn’t flinch when death could give the party something of use.

*A man trains to become a knight, showing near superhuman levels of dedication to the royal family. He eventually ascends into the ranks of the royal guard and fights tooth and nail to honor the promise he made, which seemingly grants him magical abilities. Then....as if his mind was suddenly cleared of some fog of joyful optimism...he realizes that the king and queen he serves...are horrid people. They treat their servants and their guards like below dirt. Seeds of doubt rampant in his mind...temptation of rage growing in his heart. The princess was even worst, throwing tantrums whenever someone tells her no. When his mentor was beheaded....his mind was set. One night....when the family was asleep....he killed them. All of them, leaving no royal blood alive...he was doing the people a favor. He lived his life holding the royal family on a pedestal...now though he realizes that the family he idolized was worst than the scummiest of urchins.*
The idea is that he was a Crown Oath paladin, but he realized the Family he swore to were doing more harm to those around them than the people who tried to actually attack the kingdom. He's not evil...he's still wants to help people. He's simply gone from Lawful to Chaotic Good.

The oaths a paladin has could be something personal, like say he's a former criminal who has sworn not to go back to his old life, but is still a practical person who isn't lawful stupid.
Maybe he's more like a samurai, who doesn't care about his own life and is dedicated to a cause or a group (almost like he'd work in a party or somethin....). There's so many ways the vows and oaths can be interpreted that the big complaint of "ugh I'm locked into this crappy stuff" makes no sense.
Also that part about throwing out the description in the player's handbook is by far the best advice for this class. Don't lock it in as a "holy warrior who is completely restricted and stupid" and you should be fine.

I come from the distant land known as AD&D 2e, but I have to say, the problems with Paladin in 2e aren’t because of the fact that there LG. The problem is that players tend to focus to much on the Lawful part. Essentially, paladins were played as LAWFUL (good). I have a Paladin character that I try to play as lawful GOOD, and it makes for a far better character. At one point in time, my Paladin discovered a lich’s lair. Rather than just slay the lich, he managed to convince the lich to release its soul and move on. It was one of my fondest moments in gaming.

I see the alignment system as sort of a guideline. Not something that must be followed constantly. In the game, it is best if everyone is in the party is evil or nobody is evil. It does make things difficult if you have good and neutral characters interact with someone is clearly evil and a party going against itself can make it tricky.

    • @1stCallipostle
      @1stCallipostle 2 года назад +2

An addendum: Neutrality is often underused.
You can have morals and not be "good"
Oath of the Crown embodies this
      Very lawful
      Probably has particular morals
Reeks of lawful neutral because let's be real
Sovereigns can make you do less than good things that you're loyalty bound to do

My friends character, Tarel, was a vengeance paladin who was chasing after the man who gave the order to kill her family. When she found him, because of the circumstances surrounding the murders that were discovered throughout the course of the campaign, she couldnt bring herself to kill him. Describing him laying there, cowering, as tarel raised her sword up, only for it to swing down and clang against the stome floor, and how the amulet around her neck shattered and she became wreathed in black smoke as her subclass switched to oathbreaker was one of the highlights of my DMing career

I know some will think that if Paladins deviate from the historical Paladins, then you are playing it wrong, which I disagree with, because there should be many kinds of Paladins. I mean, the Warlocks in DND aren't exactly like the historical "warlocks" either. When people think of Warlock, they think of the Fiend or maybe Undying type, and when people think of Paladins, they think of the Oath of Devotion, but there are many kinds of oaths and it doesn't NEED to involve a god. That's what you have clerics for, who are empowered through worship, while Paladins kind of empower themselves through their oath, whoever and whatever they swore it to, and sort of become an avatar of the that idea. There are many kinds of Warlocks like the Celestial. People think if you swear your loyalty to someone evil, you cease being a Paladin, but why? Warlocks and Clerics who are for good or evil entities don't switch their class because they chose to work with someone, because that's not how classes work. I mean, this is DND, so of course the druids, warlocks, ect. aren't going to be exactly like their historical counterparts, and they don't need to be, because this is fantasy, not history.
I mean, a Paladin is still a Paladin because of how they got their power, not who they are in league with. That's what makes a Paladin a Paladin. It's because of the oath they swear to. Warlocks get it from forming pacts, Wizards, study, Sorcerers are born with magic or cursed with it or affected by it in some way, Clerics get it through worshiping gods, and Druids get their power from nature. A Warlock doesn't stop being a Warlock because who they form a pact with. Whether they are celestial or fiend, they are still considered Warlocks. Just like no matter what a Paladin swears and oath, too, it's irrelevant. The fact they are getting it from their oath is enough, whether it's because they swore it to some angel or some devil. And they need to be their own thing, because otherwise, they come off as just a more musclebound Cleric, and we already have those. They're called War Clerics.

So you know how Paladins are supposed to be lawful, especially lawful good ones right? Well I have a story
I was playing my third adventure as a dragonic rogue,
We were walking down some stone steps, when one of our members fell, off the stairs, and got knocked out, and then was ambushed,
So my character Ghresh, single handedly (because only I and her had began going down the stairs at the time, so know one heard what was going on) defeated the ambushers (total luck of the dice),
I was left with one HP, less then my party member I saved, however my party gave our only health potion to her,
But then we remembered, the paladin found a med kit,
So I walked up to him, he was standing near another flight of stairs, so I ask him for the kit,
Which he reply’s to saying I don’t deserve it...
(Now to prep for the next bit, understand that I believe you should always do what your character would do, even if it is not recommended)
So Ghresh punches him, and rolls a 20, then a 6 and his strength modifier was +2,
Yet the paladin did not fall down the stairs, even though his back WAS TURNED,
So like any lawful good character, he stabs me with a long sword,
    And I die instantly,
The rest of my party then brutally murders him, and he became a hell knight.
    So that was fun

The fun and interesting bit of playing a pally as intended is the intersection of black and white oaths with a gray world.
Cutting that out kills most all of the flavor from a paladin. That's honestly why I'm against the newer, less restrictive versions of a paladin. The abilities were never the differentiator for the class. It's always been fighter with a splash of cleric.
I'm not saying that the pre-3e LG human only was the best way, but the general idea was right. There should have been versions of the paladin for at least all three lawful alignments, and it being linked tightly with a deity is what makes sense, as it's a fighter with cleric splashed. I almost want to say that the truly best way for it to be would be a prestige class or level restricted kit (as in you can't take it until like level 5 or so) in order for you to do enough deeds and become strong enough to actually be your god's enforcer, but it being a base class is too ingrained.
I can see why more mechanically minded players don't like stuff like that because they want access to the mechanics while being able to play things as they want, which is cool. It's a game where we roll dice and pretend that's epic. But restrictions aren't inherently a bad thing nor are they as restrictive as people think, and trying to walk a thin line of keeping your God pleased, keeping your oaths, and the very human desire to keep your friends friends can be awesome to play, especially when the stakes for failing at any one of those are so high.
