Spellcasters can do area burst, but its nowhere near as high single target (level 5 fighters can get +10 damage per hit from GWM/SS and can have 2 attacks normally or 4 attacks with action surge). Spellcasters aren't usually meant for raw damage or tankiness, they provide utility in other ways such as area lockdown or healing. Except for clerics, some sorcerers, fighter sorcerers, paladin sorcerers, and theurgy wizard sorcerers. Edit: spelling

By the way the formerly described method also yields things like 16/14/14/14/12/12 and 16/14/14/14/14/10 at 4th level regardless of class. Pretty good if you think race features tend to be niche to the point of rarely useful like I do. Non-variant humans ftw.

Ah yes, the subclass that could (imo should) have irritated Paladins due to being essentially the team leader /rallier. Purple Dragon Knights (or Banneret, but the Purple is too funny apparently) should have essentially been a team version of the Battle Master or just continue the 3.5 ver, but I guess that wasn't to be. But hey, at least we got a story about a Black Dragon going purple out of it.

Action Surge doesn't just give _an_ extra attack, it lets you take the entire attack action again! This combines with the extra attack abilities to let you absolutely *_HAM_* on people for a turn.
The fighter's signature move is pretty much becoming a walking blender once or twice between short rests. (It lets you can two spells in one turn, too!)
Ok, help me with math here: Level 20 fighter has 4 attacks, action surge makes that 8, bonus action attack from feat or subclass or whatever makes that 9, and if someone casts Haste on them they can make it 10, and if you include a potential reaction attack to make it 11 attacks in one round...ouch.

This is why the Samurai subclass best follows up with the 20th level ability.

appreciate the reference to Crap Guide, but at the same time fighter has been working pretty well for making encounters simple enough for a newbie like me to understand while letting me be able to make my own character persona without having to deal with class based affiliations or particular racial temperaments. One thing that was understated in this video was Action surge. It doesn't just give you an extra attack at level 2, it gives you an extra ACTION! Which can be used for whatever an Action can be used for. Yes the primary use would be to use the Attack action, but it can also be used to allow you to use the dash action again, giving fighters their own triple movement ability, it can be used to use an item, interact with surroundings ect. However, it also comes with an implied clause he didn't even mention: Extra Attack stacks with action surge. Meaning at level 5, fighters can use 4 attacks in a round, along with a bonus action attack for dual weapon users. At level 11, it increases to 6 attacks with action surge, the at level 20, 8 attacks. This is a crazy power to have. Imagine being an arcane archer or a battle master, and blowing your special arrows or superiority dice in a single turn to deal possibly over a hundred points of damage in a single flurry or barrage. Action surge, more than anything else about the fighter, is the signature skill of what people consider the blandest class in dnd.
now imagine 9 attacks with a dual wielding Champion Fighter that crits on an 18 and up, that's going to be so many crits. (especially when you manage to attain advantage)

Okay I have to comment this because I don't want new players to be put off of Fighters by people making memes: Fighters are boring to roleplay in the same way that Paladins are always Lawful Goody-two-shoes. They are if you make them that way. Time and time again I have had people throw shit at me for playing a sword and shield fighter, or a dual-wielding fighter (actually one of my favorites he was a half orc with two warhammers :D), or a whatever fighter, because "you know exactly what they're going to do". Well, yeah. They're going to fight. Just like every other class that doesn't have spellcasting. But guess what? Fighting is one-third of D&D. Fighters have exactly as much charisma (not the stat) as you give them, same as barbarians. TL;DR Fighters are as fun to roleplay as anything else if you remember that you're a character with a class, and not the other way around!
Late reply to this, but agreed. my favorite fighter was a battlemaster with keen mind and a solid intelligence (14). I took the feat because it fit with her knack for of knowing basic battlefield tactics, and was usually the voice of reason when it came to choosing when to fight or when to back off and wait to return to deal with an enemy. She was basically Sun Tzu. Sadly I retired her early due to a disagreement with how the party handled an encounter.
Share your interesting fighters? Mine is a small blond woman who is a straight-up government spook that makes people disappear. She fights like Jason Borne and is rogueier than both the party’s rogues unless she’s giving them free advantage and sneak attack. Wood elf, Battlemaster 9, Spy background.

And someone immediately said "So you're The Witcher?". I'd never read the books, or played the game, but I guess that's more or less what my fighter is. My Fighter that I've played twice is an 8th level Champion Goliath named Zori. In combat, she's pretty much your bog standard "Hit some stuff, hit some more" fighter with a ton of hit points and 20 AC, but even though I put her down as Chaotic Good, she's not particularly assertive. She often ended up going with the other party members on things just because she didn't have the nerve to object, and only started to after repeated instances of incompetence. She got dominated for a bit when we were fighting a vampire and took a whole round before she attacked the other party members like he asked because she didn't want to make anybody upset with her.
I am playing as a Variant Human Champion Fighter with the Linguist Feat, meaning that I can say "Die" in Common, Elvish, Dwarvish, Draconian, and Goblin. (Too bad he wasn't an acolyte, then it would have been 7 - or 8 if I'd been able to use the Samurai subclass - oh well.)
Hot take: action surge doesn’t have to only be used to make more attacks. The first time I used it was to dash across the battlefield and then tie a door closed so a horde of zombies outside couldn’t get in.
With the Eldritch Knight... You can cast a low level Teleport Spell, Action Surge Teleport, then cast a higher level Teleport Spell... While still having 30ft of movement to spare. Now... (Not in the rules)... If you could multiclass into the Echo Knight, then you can also switch teleport with one of your two Echos as a Bonus Action.
And now, we have the Echo Knight, who can, basically, summon a Shadow Clone of themselves, possibly 2, and thus delay the big bad an extra round, so that your spell caster can either run away, or continue working on that ritual a bit longer.

I seem to like the protection fighting style more than everyone else. I get that it's less powerful than some of the others, but if you have another front line fighter on the group (which happens a lot in my groups) it's really useful to keep them alive. It's a way to be a support role as well as a damage dealer.
One of favorite characters was a gunslinger warforged named Caliber. Between all the extra attacks, the duel wielding, and two weapon fighting, I basically annihilated anything in a few rounds
A minor correction on the cavalier's mark. you only get the bonus action attack if the marked creature attacks anyone other than you.The bonus action attack also deals extra damage equal to half you fight level. You can mark as many people as your able to hit, but you can only use the attack a number of times equal to your Strength modifier and you regain uses after a long rest EDIT: after re-watching the segment, he does mention most of the points I brought up. the only things that needed correcting were the creature attacking anything other than you and that you can mark as much as you can hit.

Samurai fighter is my favorite at level 11 because you can give up your advantage on an attack in order to attack twice. This means that at level 20, you have four attacks, give yourself advantage, give up that advantage to turn 4 attacks into 8, then action surge to do another 8 attacks. With the sharpshooter and crossbow expert feats you could use this to vaporize anything from 400 feet away.
My recent character was an Eldritch Knight, and I loved his play style. I was the tank of the party with high AC and the Shield and Blur Spells. (This annoyed my DM a little that it was so hard to hit me). Add in the SCAG blade cantrips with the War Magic ability and I was also a killing machine. I also had Misty Step for some added mobility. Action Surge made the build so much better. If you think Fighter on its own is kinda bland, I highly suggest trying out Eldritch Knight. It adds so much to combat and even some utility spells out of combat.
well, let's look at the other archetypes, theres, the crit fisher, the smart stabber, the discount hexblade, the better ranger, the tank, the one who refuses to die, the one I ban from use, and the one who makes everyone better. everyone has almost no roleplaying or out of combat use. like what are you going to use your superiority dice for? precision attacking your words? using riposte as a Phoenix Write objection? it's the fighter the purple dragon knight is not powerful alone. that said, with a rogue. action surge and that rogue gets another attack. or a barbarian with the magic axe gets another attack, during the round he used reckless attack. it's about playing smart and using allies to your advantage.
@@stanard_bearer considering battlemaster can get another attack to comrades, you can't add sneak attack twice a round, and all their other abilities are nearly completely worthless than yes, they 100% suck... all fighters have very low roleplay on their own it's just that Dragon Knight is bad at the one thing fighters shouldn't be bad at... actually FIGHTING, oh and banning a fighter is incredibly petty given how low their power is compared to casters in general or barbarians
Cavalier only gets the special bonus action attack if the marked target deals damage to anyone that *ISN'T* you. This is kind of an important distinction, since they will have disadvantage on attacks against characters that aren't you. It's a lot less likely to happen, which is why the bonus action attack gets advantage and bonus damage. The idea is punishing the enemy for hurting your allies
My favorite part of the Battle Master is that they’re truly noble fighters. They see calligraphy as a part of war as much as swordplay. I think it’s what Cavalier failed to be.
I’m playing battle master right now, and I have to agree that it is really fun. I use a bow, so I can literally push people 5 feet back with an arrow using pushing attack.
Fighter during combat: YEAH THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR Fighter during exploration: I can...climb stuff pretty good you guys. Fighter during roleplay: So uh...wasn't that cool when I hit that guy a whole bunch of times in a row?
Playing either the Banneret (Purple Dragon Knight) or Samurai gives you proficiency/expertise/bonuses in Persuasion. You can be the face of the party if you don't use CHA as your dump stat. Playing an Eldritch Knight gives you access to a bunch of Wizard spells (in case you use those as 'exploration' things). Picking a background that gives you skills/tool proficiency will deal with any problems with exploration.
Regarding the Cavalier, I would like to make a correction (6:51): If a Marked enemy deals damage in anyway to an ally, you can do a Special Bonus Action Attack against that enemy on your next turn. The Marking ability can effect multiple enemies at a time and you can do it at will, the Special Bonus Action Attack has a limited amount of uses until you have to take a Long Rest.
Honestly my favorite Fighter subclass would have to be the unofficial Vigilante subclass from the new Eberron supliment. Idk, I like that it's got a fun theme of self sacrifice built into the mechanics.
Fighter was the class that got me into D&D. When I got the book it was the Battle Master that made me want to try this game. Over a year later and a few other classes played, still one of my favorites!
I played a cavalier fighter centaur once and if you are wondering, no, the DM didn't allow me to be always mounted because I'm half horse instead my centaur was riding a tandem bicycle for the whole campaign because no one knew how a centaur could unmount a tandem bike
required feats, sentinel, polearm master, tunnel defender. use a reach weapon, enemy enters range of attack, with polearm master opportunity attack, hit, enemy speed is now 0 with sentinel. more guys start rushing you tunnel defender gives you more opportunity attacks. once your turn arrives use your attacks and back up so enemies are out of range, same thing goes on through every round. "Back, Back you SAVAGES"
I am glad that this class is no longer "take for X levels to get Y feats so you can get into the cool prestige class you want to play" like it was back in 3.5. That and it's probably a good thing the Cavalier isn't an orbital strike like it was back at that time, although it did always make me giggle a bit to get x5 (might have been x6-7 due to an Exotic Weapon) damage on the charge attack.

Meaning at level 5, fighters can use 4 attacks in a round, along with a bonus action attack for dual weapon users. At level 11, it increases to 6 attacks with action surge, the at level 20, 8 attacks. This is a crazy power to have. Imagine being an arcane archer or a battle master, and blowing your special arrows or superiority dice in a single turn to deal possibly over a hundred points of damage in a single flurry or barrage.
Action surge, more than anything else about the fighter, is the signature skill of what people consider the blandest class in dnd.
now imagine 9 attacks with a dual wielding Champion Fighter that crits on an 18 and up, that's going to be so many crits.
(especially when you manage to attain advantage)
Eldritch Knights can fireball/scorching ray twice a turn AND follow it up with a weapon attack.
Sadly unless your DM is nice in raw you can't cast two spells that require a spellslot in one turn

I'd say that's Barbarian. Beginners get lost in maneuvers or think offensive spells on an Eldritch Knight are good.

Okay I have to comment this because I don't want new players to be put off of Fighters by people making memes:
Fighters are boring to roleplay in the same way that Paladins are always Lawful Goody-two-shoes. They are if you make them that way. Time and time again I have had people throw shit at me for playing a sword and shield fighter, or a dual-wielding fighter (actually one of my favorites he was a half orc with two warhammers :D), or a whatever fighter, because "you know exactly what they're going to do". Well, yeah. They're going to fight. Just like every other class that doesn't have spellcasting. But guess what? Fighting is one-third of D&D. Fighters have exactly as much charisma (not the stat) as you give them, same as barbarians.
TL;DR Fighters are as fun to roleplay as anything else if you remember that you're a character with a class, and not the other way around!
Late reply to this, but agreed. my favorite fighter was a battlemaster with keen mind and a solid intelligence (14). I took the feat because it fit with her knack for of knowing basic battlefield tactics, and was usually the voice of reason when it came to choosing when to fight or when to back off and wait to return to deal with an enemy. She was basically Sun Tzu. Sadly I retired her early due to a disagreement with how the party handled an encounter.

Mine is a small blond woman who is a straight-up government spook that makes people disappear. She fights like Jason Borne and is rogueier than both the party’s rogues unless she’s giving them free advantage and sneak attack. Wood elf, Battlemaster 9, Spy background.

And someone immediately said "So you're The Witcher?". I'd never read the books, or played the game, but I guess that's more or less what my fighter is.

My Fighter that I've played twice is an 8th level Champion Goliath named Zori. In combat, she's pretty much your bog standard "Hit some stuff, hit some more" fighter with a ton of hit points and 20 AC, but even though I put her down as Chaotic Good, she's not particularly assertive. She often ended up going with the other party members on things just because she didn't have the nerve to object, and only started to after repeated instances of incompetence. She got dominated for a bit when we were fighting a vampire and took a whole round before she attacked the other party members like he asked because she didn't want to make anybody upset with her.
I am playing as a Variant Human Champion Fighter with the Linguist Feat, meaning that I can say "Die" in Common, Elvish, Dwarvish, Draconian, and Goblin. (Too bad he wasn't an acolyte, then it would have been 7 - or 8 if I'd been able to use the Samurai subclass - oh well.)
These videos always make me want to make a new character for that class because suddenly they look so SHINY AND COOL in this format.

I made a Fighter/Bard multi-class who has the inspiring leader and is a battle master to support allies, this comment is accurate.
Hot take: action surge doesn’t have to only be used to make more attacks. The first time I used it was to dash across the battlefield and then tie a door closed so a horde of zombies outside couldn’t get in.
With the Eldritch Knight... You can cast a low level Teleport Spell, Action Surge Teleport, then cast a higher level Teleport Spell... While still having 30ft of movement to spare.
Now... (Not in the rules)... If you could multiclass into the Echo Knight, then you can also switch teleport with one of your two Echos as a Bonus Action.

Action surge is honestly pretty game changing. It's the difference between a fighter-paladin doing two smites a turn and four.
And now, we have the Echo Knight, who can, basically, summon a Shadow Clone of themselves, possibly 2, and thus delay the big bad an extra round, so that your spell caster can either run away, or continue working on that ritual a bit longer.
13 attacks with the Echo Knight + Feats.
11 attacks or 4 Spells + Bonus Action, with the Eldritch Knight + Feats

I seem to like the protection fighting style more than everyone else. I get that it's less powerful than some of the others, but if you have another front line fighter on the group (which happens a lot in my groups) it's really useful to keep them alive. It's a way to be a support role as well as a damage dealer.

EDIT: after re-watching the segment, he does mention most of the points I brought up. the only things that needed correcting were the creature attacking anything other than you and that you can mark as much as you can hit.

Samurai fighter is my favorite at level 11 because you can give up your advantage on an attack in order to attack twice. This means that at level 20, you have four attacks, give yourself advantage, give up that advantage to turn 4 attacks into 8, then action surge to do another 8 attacks. With the sharpshooter and crossbow expert feats you could use this to vaporize anything from 400 feet away.
Being saved by the Protection style is like slipping just before someone hits you and trying to play it off like you meant to do it

My recent character was an Eldritch Knight, and I loved his play style. I was the tank of the party with high AC and the Shield and Blur Spells. (This annoyed my DM a little that it was so hard to hit me). Add in the SCAG blade cantrips with the War Magic ability and I was also a killing machine. I also had Misty Step for some added mobility. Action Surge made the build so much better.
If you think Fighter on its own is kinda bland, I highly suggest trying out Eldritch Knight. It adds so much to combat and even some utility spells out of combat.

well, let's look at the other archetypes, theres, the crit fisher, the smart stabber, the discount hexblade, the better ranger, the tank, the one who refuses to die, the one I ban from use, and the one who makes everyone better.
everyone has almost no roleplaying or out of combat use. like what are you going to use your superiority dice for? precision attacking your words? using riposte as a Phoenix Write objection?
it's the fighter the purple dragon knight is not powerful alone. that said, with a rogue. action surge and that rogue gets another attack. or a barbarian with the magic axe gets another attack, during the round he used reckless attack. it's about playing smart and using allies to your advantage.
@@stanard_bearer considering battlemaster can get another attack to comrades, you can't add sneak attack twice a round, and all their other abilities are nearly completely worthless than yes, they 100% suck... all fighters have very low roleplay on their own it's just that Dragon Knight is bad at the one thing fighters shouldn't be bad at... actually FIGHTING, oh and banning a fighter is incredibly petty given how low their power is compared to casters in general or barbarians

Cavalier only gets the special bonus action attack if the marked target deals damage to anyone that *ISN'T* you. This is kind of an important distinction, since they will have disadvantage on attacks against characters that aren't you. It's a lot less likely to happen, which is why the bonus action attack gets advantage and bonus damage. The idea is punishing the enemy for hurting your allies
My favorite part of battlemaster, is the "Student of war" feature, so you can get smithing tool profficencys, and make your own weapons and armor.

My favorite part of the Battle Master is that they’re truly noble fighters. They see calligraphy as a part of war as much as swordplay. I think it’s what Cavalier failed to be.
I once had a cavalier in a party whose mount was our paladin. He was a gnome with a trident, and went by “Yay-High.”
I’m playing battle master right now, and I have to agree that it is really fun. I use a bow, so I can literally push people 5 feet back with an arrow using pushing attack.
All I'm gonna say is that I damn near had a heart attack when I saw you move towards the PHB with those scissors.

Playing either the Banneret (Purple Dragon Knight) or Samurai gives you proficiency/expertise/bonuses in Persuasion. You can be the face of the party if you don't use CHA as your dump stat.
Playing an Eldritch Knight gives you access to a bunch of Wizard spells (in case you use those as 'exploration' things).
Picking a background that gives you skills/tool proficiency will deal with any problems with exploration.

Regarding the Cavalier, I would like to make a correction (6:51): If a Marked enemy deals damage in anyway to an ally, you can do a Special Bonus Action Attack against that enemy on your next turn.
The Marking ability can effect multiple enemies at a time and you can do it at will, the Special Bonus Action Attack has a limited amount of uses until you have to take a Long Rest.
Honestly my favorite Fighter subclass would have to be the unofficial Vigilante subclass from the new Eberron supliment. Idk, I like that it's got a fun theme of self sacrifice built into the mechanics.

Fighter was the class that got me into D&D. When I got the book it was the Battle Master that made me want to try this game. Over a year later and a few other classes played, still one of my favorites!

I played a cavalier fighter centaur once and if you are wondering, no, the DM didn't allow me to be always mounted because I'm half horse instead my centaur was riding a tandem bicycle for the whole campaign because no one knew how a centaur could unmount a tandem bike

enemy enters range of attack, with polearm master opportunity attack, hit, enemy speed is now 0 with sentinel. more guys start rushing you tunnel defender gives you more opportunity attacks.
once your turn arrives use your attacks and back up so enemies are out of range, same thing goes on through every round.

I am glad that this class is no longer "take for X levels to get Y feats so you can get into the cool prestige class you want to play" like it was back in 3.5. That and it's probably a good thing the Cavalier isn't an orbital strike like it was back at that time, although it did always make me giggle a bit to get x5 (might have been x6-7 due to an Exotic Weapon) damage on the charge attack.
My favorite subclass for fighter is Cavalier; you can just lock down several enemies and keep them from getting to other teammates.
I made battle master fighter who focused on opportunities in one on ones and used those opportunities to strike with his rapier. Haven't been able to play him yet but I'm pretty exited to
