Growing increasingly agitated, Walter (Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games saga and The Secret of Terabithia) accuses Danny (Jonah Bobo from Crazy, Stupid, Love) of cheating by supposedly moving his piece prematurely; when Walter tries to move the piece back and takes his next turn, the game reacts as if Walter was cheating and ejects him from the house into the vacuum of space as punishment, but the astronaut retrieves him.

What’s the “Zathura: A Space Adventure” movie about?
After their father (Tim Robbins from The Escapees and Mystic River) is called away from work, two young boys, Walter (Josh Hutcherson from the Hunger Games saga and Bridge to Terabithia) and Danny (Jonah Bobo from Crazy, Stupid, Love) are left under the supervision of their sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart from the Twilight saga and Snow White and the Huntsman) and assigned to stay home. Walter and Danny, anticipating a boring day, find a game they decide to play: Zathura. It's a somewhat peculiar space-themed board game, as it propels their house into space. With the help of an astronaut (Dax Shepard), the boys try to find their way back to Earth.

I kind of feel bad for the Astronaut in this scene. Realizing he’s future Walter, you know he’s sitting there literally watching himself be mean to his brother. He must be thinking, “Was I really that mean?”

Yeah, watching his younger self yell at Danny is basically a way for him to realize that he had truly been the reason why they always fought. Sure, Danny did always do something by accident, but Walter was always rude. So in this scene, he's basically in the perspective of what their parents had to deal with. With the astronaut yelling to stop the argument, I bet he was remembering their dad saying “There’s only one of me!” and to give him space. That part of the movie was probably the first time their father ever raised his voice at them.
He was probably thinking: “was I this much of an asshole to him to the point that I didn’t want him anymore?”
How embarrassing,the astronaut saw how horrible he was to his brother when he was younger. It's like looking in a mirror showing you all your flaws lol

Growing up you realize Danny wasn’t the problem it was Walter.
It took me a long time to realize that Danny may have cheated so that he could end the game faster without having to go through any more of that stuff
It happened off-screen so we didn't notice it and also the game didn't notice Danny moving his rocket forward and it thinks that Walter was caught cheating by moving Danny's rocket backward to the place it was there before and it applied automatic ejection on Walter instead of danny

There’s nothing funny about them arguing. Walter was being such a big bully toward his brother and I’m seeing that it really is Walter who’s the cheater. I also see him as a bit of a minor antagonist/anti-hero.

when you think about it, it doesn't make sence for Walter to be angry at danny for moving the piece forward, after all, their trying to survive their game, not beat each other. having the piece be closer to the finishline is only beneficial.
I like the : "Wait a minute ." When you consider his brother situation.
I consider the brother situation. As the older brother he should be the responsible person by not fighting back or resort to hurting his little brothers feelings. He should be more sympathetic to his brothers feelings instead of upsetting him. An older brother is someone who you should respect and looking up to him as a good role model. When it comes to games it gets harder to get along with him.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw this scene for the first time. I thought Danny was going to end up like Peter, but instead of turning into a monkey, I thought he was going to turn into an alien or something. Great minds think alike, friend.

This movie was phenomenal. Just rewatched yesterday. Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo acted incredibly. Their argument scenes and brother relationship dynamics looked so authentic and real.

IMO Walter was ejected because the punishment is truly about that. Danny is the one cheated so the punishment is to eject someone who plays with you, that means he won't be able to continue no matter what and felt the misery of losing someone he care and love deep down. The damage afterwards will be more impactful for Danny than Walter who might only get ejected/erased/died in the game. Just a random thought about how fucked the game actually is.

It’s not worth cheating, but you can’t just get agitated over someone and blame them which is apparently just not cool.
Walter got ejected out of house
This Astronaut's story closely mimics that of Emperor Zurg (the future Buzz Lightyear) from the Lightyear movie:
Even the astronaut (future Walter) reached space with the help of the game as well. He and his brothers did not respect each other as heroes. Walter was angry about why Danny was so annoying all the time and when he possibly cheated too but somehow Walter still got away with it and he continued the game and got the wishing star card and wished his brother hadn't existed but not in the way that his brother had never even been born (then the game would never have been started and Walter would have thus perhaps created a time paradox in this way which would have therefore taken him back to Earth) but in such a way that his brother would just disappear into non-existence.
After that he was sorry and he couldn't continue the game and he was trapped in space and somehow he survived in space, the house probably drifted in space and Walter probably ended up in the Space Academy that was in the story of that game, almost like an alternative future imitating the future vision of the world in the 50s that young Walter wouldn't have recognized it himself, full of indescribable 50s sci-fi technology (i.e. the same as that robot was, it was a 50s sci-fi model) and after becoming 15 years older, having only eaten its food reserves (paste from a tube) at the space academy after completing astronaut training, after receiving the spacesuit, he realized that:
If we can use wormholes in sci-fi movies to move through time, why not the same in real life, whether it's going forward in time or going back, so he went through the time slot, that is, the wormhole when he arrived at that point in time, 15 years ago in the past to help his younger self and Danny get rid of the Zorgons and to correct his own mistake.
So, like Zurg-Buzz, the Astronaut broke time, and so what (just because of his presence) happened to young Walter never happened to the Astronaut. This moment in the movie was a new moment with never be lived. So they were able to change things.
So if the Astronaut could go back in time, he could stop his younger self from wishing Danny away, from continuing their bickering, so they could continue playing the game, progressing and thus making it home. And nothing like that happened.
And it worked out great. So this was a very similar event to the meeting between Buzz and his future self, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this movie had served as an inspiration for that time travel and thus the birth of Emperor Zurg from the Lightyear movie.
Danny could've just said that he moved the piece to help finish the game quicker instead of saying it was an accident. Then again, Walter probably would've said "No! If you wanted to move your piece to try to finish the game quicker, you could've moved it to the end! You just wanna beat me!"
This was so funny & sibling-relatable. But jokes aside, Danny DID IN FACT cheat. But I don’t blame him. I’d want the game to end sooner to end this Hell of obstacles. But Walter’s right. No accidental kick of the board would cause the rusty-moving rockets to move a few spaces in front of the other player. You’d have to actually move it with your own hands on purpose in order to do what Danny tried to pull on him. Danny should’ve been the 1 that got flung up in space, not Walter.
But if Danny is the one who cheated.. why was Walter the one who was ejected?

After a heated argument between Danny and Walter, in frustration Walter moved the game pieces which is why he got ejected and not Danny. How could anyone move game pieces when they are stuck on the game board, it’s impossible. The game didn’t work cause it wasn’t Danny’s turn. That’s when the argument started.

Sure Danny admitted to cheating “accidentally”, but I don’t get how. It looked like it took a lot if effort for Walter to move the piece back, and then he was punished by the game. I don’t see how Danny could’ve done the same, accidentally or otherwise, without struggling like that and getting caught by the game itself.
the only logical explanation i can come up with is that he never really cheated in the first place. he even says it himself "Maybe I moved the piece by an accident" the operative word being "maybe." truth is, Danny really was just a good kid, but his brother made him doubt himself
I'll bet interacting with myself as a child would be as humbling an experience as this scene makes it look.
Now Walter, are you REALLY sure that you were ahead of Danny? And Danny, are you REALLY sure that Walter was not ahead of you? Try to remember both of you. 😂

That's what's so terrifying. The gold cards are unique in a good way while the yellow ones instantly indicate something's wrong.
Even if Walter is right about things Danny does-like cheating-he's just so utterly mean and obnoxious about it that it's hard to sympathize with him.

Considering how much of a struggle it was for Walter to move Danny back it is highly unlikely that Danny moved the pieces and he most likely said he might have bumped it because he was frightened and trying to defuse the situation.
Testimony given under duress is not proof of anything other than duress.
Big brothers at that age often accuse little brothers of cheating when they are winning without having proof of anything.
I know I did granted the brother in question had a habit of doing questionable things in games but just because they do it sometimes doesn't mean they did it this time.
When you consider just how stressed out Danny was at this point admitting to something he didn't do was easier than having to fight about it.
Without going back and looking at the end of the previous turn I cannot say for sure if Danny cheated.
But lets be honest if
Danny cheated to move a little bit ahead in this game then good on him. The house is being destroyed and they have had numerous dangerous events and it is only getting worse. The dumbest thing in the movie is that Walter forced him back makes you wonder what dangers could have been avoided if he just ignored it.

Perhaps because when Danny moved the piece, it was Walter's turn to play. So, it would've registered as Walter moving the piece, since it was his turn.

If I remember correctly, Walter blatantly blamed Danny for the divorce.
I know that i'm late to the argument, but I firmly believe that Danny didn't cheat. If danny DID cheat, the game would've ejected him. But since it was accidental and unintentionall, the game probably let it slide. But since Walter intentionally moved the piece himself, being completely aware of his actions, only then did the game said "alright, now that's not fair."

I always thought that while Danny may have cheated, Walter was the one who moved Danny's piece further back than it actually was, thus he was the real cheater, hence why the game ejected him. The reason it took so long on the spin was to see if everything lined up correctly, but Danny's was further back than when he last spun.

If the neighbor hear the noise and came to their house to see Walter and Danny fighting they would be punished with strong disciplinary methods so they would learn their lessons
It is a good thing that Danny let the astronaut stay so that he could rescue Walter from vanishing into outer space after the game caught him cheating by moving Danny's rocket backward to the place it was there before because if he hadn't, Walter would have been lost in space after he was caught cheating by the game after he moved Danny's rocket backward to the place it was there before and Danny would have been trapped in a flying house in outer space forever all alone with his sister being frozen due to games consequences
In short, if Danny wouldn't let the astronaut stay, Danny would be lost in space forever due to two reasons,
Firstly, Walter would be ejected from the house and lost in outer space when he was caught cheating by the game when Walter moved his rocket backward to the place it was originally before, and as the game requires 2 players to continue, Danny would be stuck in space forever same way as astronaut was without his second player to continue further
Secondly, his sister Lisa is frozen by a game card she could have been stuck like this forever if Danny made an astronaut leave and when Walter was ejected from his house and lost in outer space after being caught cheating
Yeah sure Danny moved the piece but it happened off screen so that we didn't noticed danny moving his own rocket forward so the game used automatic ejection on walter because it caught walter cheating as he moved his rocket backward and the game didn't noticed or sensed danny moving his rocket and walter didn't belived danny about the fact that he moved his own rocket by accident and walter believed danny to be cheating on purpose
Maybe the game was inactive for some time and didn't sensed danny moving his own rocket piece and when walter moved danny rocket the game wakes up and reacts to walter moving danny's rocket backward to the place it was there before
I don't if Danny actually cheated or not but if he actually did Walter should be grateful instead of being angry

This scene doesn’t make sense. When Danny last spun, his piece stopped underneath the little bridge. I kinda agree with Danny for claiming he didn’t cheat even though, he admits it later on. But how could Danny have cheated if the piece is stuck to the game? Walter deadass told him it’s stuck to the game so what made him think Danny moved the piece so easily. Now according to Josh Hutchersons role, it’s funny that he treats Danny like crap most of the time and then later on as things get worser, he treats him like he cares for him❤.
