After their father (Tim Robbins) is called into work, two young boys, Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny (Jonah Bobo), are left in the care of their teenage sister, Lisa (Kristen Stewart), and told they must stay inside. Walter and Danny, who anticipate a boring day, are shocked when they begin playing Zathura, a space-themed board game, which they realize has mystical powers when their house is shot into space. With the help of an astronaut (Dax Shepard), the boys attempt to return home.

Can you watch "Labyrinth" (1986)? That movie is very well done. It has cool fantasy and the puppets are incredible! 😊💖🔥
One of the best, most underrated childhood movies ofall time! That robot scared the living daylights out of me.
Same but the Zorgons more for me !
@@vari_aresme too!!
The zorgons gave me nightmares for almost a year, I can't believe how realistic they looked for a movie from 2005. Why didn't the spiderman franchise use such a great design for the lizard?
Sony needs to do a crossover with Jumanji and Zathura
yeah that'll be so cool
Or make more Zathura movies.
Fuck yeah they should!!! Have Judy and Peter somehow meet Walter and Danny!!!!
Jack Black teased the next Jumanji film will crossover with Zathura
Actually they belong to the same universe. Or at least was i think are from the same writer
In the book and the movie, Danny does find the game. However:
In the book, the game is shown as Jumanji first THEN it changes into Zathura to get their attention.
The movie just never acknowledges they were the same.
So that's where the sequel take this idea from that the game can adapt to hold interest. Nice move.
I should check out the book, wonder what else was cut out
In my language (Sinhala),Zathura means {The Enemy}
Really underrated film i used to love when i was younger
Fun fact Timothee, both the original Jumanji and Zathura are based on childrens storybooks written by the same person and in the Zathura book the kids find the game at a park and it’s in the same box as jumanji and they chose to play Zathura Alsace adventure instead of humanity a jungle adventure because it sounded cooler.
"Get me a juice box biatch" is probably the greatest line in film history.
That along with Danny saying “You’re suck a dick!” to Walter in the beginning could obviously never be said in a PG-rated family film today. I really miss the days when family films having a lot of edge.
@@carter_lovejoy I don't know. There's family movies nowadays that says "hell" or "ass."
@@anamelessyoutuber1462 true. But not to the same extent as it was in the 80s, 90s and 2000s.
@@carter_lovejoy Not wrong.
Really hope Josh says this to Freddy in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie
Also I always took Walter getting the automatic ejection card to mean Danny really didn’t cheat, Walter was just convinced that because his little brother always cheats, he must have cheated that time
Danny legitimately didn’t move his piece
I remember watching this randomly on the tv one day and I absolutely loved it.
I remember watching this when I was younger with my dad. We didn't have the greatest relationship back then, but watching this movie together definitely brought us closer.
Imagine them doing a new Zathura movie in the same vein as the most recent Jumanji movies with The Rock. Instead of kids playing a game and their house or the building they’re in gets sent into space, they make it a War of the Worlds-esque alien invasion type movie where kids find the game and it summons it’s elements into the real world like what the original Jumanji film did.
I would totally watch that!!
That's why I am not watching the new Jumanji movies, because that's what I hoped they would be doing on a larger scale, a big city slowly being taken over by the jungle.
BTW, I have nothing against the new movies, but I was so underwhelmed when I saw the trailer, they simply died for me. I understand why they did it, but it just wasn't for me.
God, imagine the Zorgons the the defunked robot with 2023 effects, that would look epic. I mean for 2005 they did an amazing job anyway, but my god that would I look cool.
@@TheRandomMan001 as long as it doesn’t look like bad Marvel VFX like the terrible CG floating head from Thor: Love and Thunder or MODOK (aka the Mr. Electric from Sharkboy & Lavagirl and Humpty Dumpty from the first Puss in Boots movie hybrid) from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
@@Dreamfox-df6bgI totally agree with you. I like the Dwayne Johnson movies fine enough, but like you said it would have been cool if they took the whole jungle in the city thing to a whole new and bigger level.
To me I think that the Zathura movie is way better than the original Jumanji movie because in Zathura you’re basically playing the game in your house and in space when you’re greeted by a evil robot and evil alien lizards, where as in Jumanji you’re playing in your house and bunch of wild animals and killer plants and a hunter are trying to kill you.
My top favourite childhood movies that I’d played over and over. Where in Jumanji you play it and it lets out the obstacles in the world, in Zathura it takes you to space it self and lets you face the obstacles your self.
I do believe this is probably one of Dax Shepard's best performances. Especially on a rewatch, when you know his story and can look out for all the little hints and clues that foreshadow it.
It's also funny seeing Kristen Stewart act more like an actual teenager here than in all five _Twilight_ movies.
And since nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, that's Frank Oz doing the voice of the Robot.
Imagine how the Astronaut must feel knowing how much of a jerk he was to his brother.
One of my childhood favourites! Been a long time since I saw it last, so I'm really glad that you're reacting to it. ❤
broooo you don't know how much emotions i have for this movie 😢 It's literally my childhood movie i have so much stories for this and it is the 2nd movie I ever saw!!!!! and now my favorite reactor is watching it ❤this is like a dream come true thank you so much tim for watching this and this music is giving me so much nostalgia as I'm watching the intro 💖
Please watch "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987). It's one of my favorite childhood movies.
so underrated! One of the best 80s movies.
This was one of my favorite childhood movies. So glad you watched it. 😊 This was also one of the movies that made me love everything about Earth and Space Science.
I know how you fell man I remember I used to play this movie every night, and also got me interested in space and stuff especially black holes.
I remember this movie. When I first watched it I didn't know what Jumanji was but now the similarities entertain me. It helps the movie is pretty fun
Fun fact this movie was actually marketed as a sequel to the first movie even now when they adopted it from the book they got rid of every reference to the first Jumanji, which is pretty common when they adapt books that are sequels like silence of the lambs and the first James Bond movie.
I used to see trailers for this movie on our DVD's alot and wanting to see ut but despite that, I almost never managed to see the movie until years later when my Nephew wanted to watch it and Jumanji together and I barely ever see any reactions to it, so thank you for reminding me of it
I’m so glad you reacted to this, I think you may be the first reactor that I have seen do so. I’m surprised how few people seem to know about this movie, it was always a favorite of mine!
28:21 When I saw the movie for the first time. I didn't react to the story of the astronaut, but now that I'm mature, it hits me hard. My sibligns and I may not get along well sometimes, but wish for them to not exist goes for one of the most heartless things you can do in your life. Value your siblings, because one day it may be too late.
I love the raygun gothic
It's such a unique and underused genre
Finally someone who reacted to this movie! Let's go, I always felt like it deserves the same amount of love as Jumanji.
Zathura could have easily just been attempt to profit off the succes of Jumanji, but no, it’s a genuinely good film that had a good amount of care, effort and creativity put into it. From the aliens design and backstory to the twisty plot, it’s a fun ride all the way though.
Not sure if you knew this, but Jon Favreau directed Zathura, and the very next movie he made was, in fact, Iron Man. So your comment about the robot was spot on!!
I actually watched this in the cinema and never regretted it. It is a real shame it never got the recognition that it deserved.
I remember when I was a kid I was scared in every scene of the zorbons
In the part where they were fighting over who cheated and didn't cheat, Danny didn't actually cheat, he was just saying he might have because he wanted his brother to stop accusing him of cheating when he didn't, plus you can tell he didn't cheat cause the game would've told the one who cheated by spitting out a card like it did with the older brother (can't remember his name)
How many others grew up with this in the late 2000s as part of their childhood? They even reference Jak 3 twice! Come on. Haven't seen the video yet, but I'm stoked to see your reactions
Childhood memories
Great reaction Tim you're the best 13:18 How funny that you mention Iron man considering that both films (Zathura and Iron man) are from the same director Jon favreau
I loved this film when I was younger, it didn't quite have the same nostalgia as Jumanji, it being a newer film but it definitely scratches that itch. I actually watched this just the other week despite being 27 haha.
Fun fact: Jonah Bobo who played Danny, he lost 4 teeth during filming. The production crew made him special dentures called flippers that fills in the spaces where he lost his 4 teeth, that way it looks like he has all his teeth.
Outside of that, he also did some voice acting, most notably as the speaking voice of Austin the Purple Kangaroo on the Nickelodeon/Nick Jr. TV series The Backyardigans for a total of 49 episodes of Austin's appearance.
Favorite part of the movie was the robot I really like the design of it it made it look so retro looking and at the same time really intimidating cool looking
I think that Walter wishing for the game to be over would be like wishing for more wishes.
Timothee, Ma Boy! Childhood favourite.
Sony needs to do another board game-themed movie
I love the movie Zathura because it's just like Jumanji but different. Thank you Tim for reaction to this movie. I still love Spongebob because it's a very great tv show and it's also very funny. And the rules of the Zathura game is the same rules of the Jumanji game things won't go back to normal, unless they finish the game.
Fun Fact: The dad in the movie is also the same guy who played as Andy in the Shawshank Redemption. Another thing as well, the kid that plays Walter is also playing Mike in the FNAF movie.
Imagine if that sparked a theory that all three of those films take place in the same universe somehow... as dumb as that sounds lmao
Zathura was an awesome jumanji sequel although i viewed it way different, another childhood movie for me and i remember watching it home at TV being super happy as it was just a really cool space adventure
Zathura is what an evolution of Jumanji should be that turn to be a space D&D tabletop
This was a classic in my house. Always had it on the DVR from Cartoon Network. Absolutely loved this movie as a kid.
For all the jumanji reboot reactions on RUclips this is the first I've seen to do its lesser known successor! This came before the video games movies and found its way to be a good board game movie that wasnt a carbon copy of or "Impovement" on the original.
Those reptile creatures used to give me the same chills as the Dinosaurs from Jurassic Park
Fun Fact: the author who wrote Jumanji and Zathura is the same author who also wrote The Polar Express. His name is Chris Van Allsburg fyi.
Also I totally forgot Jon Favreau directed this lol. Such an underrated film.
Also the kid that played Danny was also in the rom com Crazy Stupid Love which if you haven’t seen yet, I highly recommend it.
Jonah Bobo was also in Nickelodeon/Nick Jr.'s The Backyardigans as the voice of Austin.
This used to be one of my favorite movies and, until today, I'd completely forgotten it.
I also love how the Zorgons are practical, they're still scary to me haha.
The Thing 1982 was practical, and still looks very good. Practical beats CG.
On other hand CG has more capabilities, not restrained by reality and physics
This is a sequel?! I always thought it was inspired by Jumanji. I never realized it was technically a sequel
Technically, not directly i think. But both books jumanji and zathura by the same author in the same universe
@@TimotheeReacts Ah that makes sense. Personally I love this movie
The kid playing Walter will be in the Five Nights at Freddy’s film. Apparently robots keep chasing him like he’s one of the Connors from Terminator.
I haven't seen this film in like 12+ years, and now everyone I follow is either reacting or reviewing out of nowhere. Now I need to watch this movie in full again. I remember loving it a lot
In the words of another: "A Gem Deemed A Knockoff"
Thank you for bringing attention to the forgotten middle-child-syndromed sequel!
I actually didn't know it was an official sequel, proof you can learn something anytime.
One of my childhood favorites, although I must admit the scream at 36:35 terrified me until I was something like 10, but it didn't stop me from watching it dozens of times!
Josh Hutcherson (a.k.a. Peeta Mallark from Lionsgate's The Hunger Games) and Jonah Bobo (a.k.a. Austin the Purple Kangaroo from Nick Jr.'s The Backyardigans) are stuck in space by a magical board game called Zathura.
40:28 she said "..i wanted to..." and the BANG happened 😂😂😂😂😂
So glad you watched this! Loved this movie since I was a kid! Also Bridge to Terabithia is a great Josh Hutcherson movie from his young career!
Yes! I've been waiting for someone to react to this. Totally underrated classic 👌
I remember watching this when it was released when I was a kid and I was really confused by it because I thought it was a jumanji sequel but not really.
Who remembers watching this In theaters. Josh hutcherson at the time was just coming off his success of firehouse dog when this came out. I remember watching firehouse dog in theaters too
Okay, but the four-eyed goats are pure nightmare fuel! 35:31
Fun fact:
The Robot is voiced by Frank Oz who voiced Yoda in all the live action Star Wars movies from Empire Strikes back to The Rise of Skywalker
Came out in 05 I was 16 and absolutely head over heels for Kristen Stewart because of this movie. 😅
At the time Zathura was released, I was unaware it was connected to Jumanji, although I could figure it out with obvious elements, such as a magical board game. Still, I enjoyed watching Zathura in the years following its release, and I occasionally still do.
34:14 fun fact about those effects most of that is puppet but they actually have the human head sticking out so they CGI it out and the robot didn’t even have its John arms and through most of the movie it was a guy in a suit.
I have returned with more random movie trivia.
Fun fact: Much like Jumanji, which the original book share the same author, this was a board game you buy, I even had one as a kid.
Also if the scene about cheating is confusing, my take is that Walter jealous that Danny was ahead of him, and Danny didn't know he was cus he wasn't paying that much attention to it
I love this movie and every time I ask if someone has seen it the answer is always no.. so underrated.
It’s been so long since the last time I saw this movie and I still love it, thanks
I loved this movie growing up. My brother and I could really relate to those kids (me being the younger one and my brother being the older one). I had never seen a sci fi movie before and this was out of this world (literally) for me.
This was a great film. Shame that not many people know about it. Loved this film as a kid just as much as Jumanji!
Good thing Andy Dusfrene handled his second divorce better....
Kids open the door: "Don't open that!!! It's an alien planet!!! Is there AIR?!!!! YOU DON'T KNOW!!!"
"He's Iron Man! They predicted Iron Man!" Lol, Jon Favreau, the director, did direct Iron Man 3 years later.
It's so weird to go back and see young Josh Hutcherson. I watched this movie when I was about 4-6 years old, and now I'm in my early 20s and the man is gonna be in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. That is nuts!
I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid. It said that this was from the people who made Jumanji, and in a way I hope that they make similar movies, like a desert movie with sand serpents, and bugs, and mummies and cactuses, and camels, and the sun and more, and even like a tropical one with again bugs, but also the ocean, storms, waves, high tide, giant octopupie, sharks, giant crabs, whirlpools, sea snakes, sting rays, boats, and more. That is just what I want, like different adventures in different places.
37:27-37:38 that’s my favorite scene from zathura.
Appreciate you reacting to this
Feel like i just suggested it. man yall move quick. Great job
Planned for months! To see right after the Jumanji movies
The twilight movies are very good. Start watching them on Halloween or Valentines Day.
there is a german movie in that kind of style. its called "Manatu - nur die Wahrheit rettet Dich" (Manata - only the truth will safe you)
I remember that movie saw it in a library once I remember this sentence in my head alien life form must destroy!
Oh so this was the one I watched when I was young. No wonder Jumanji doesn't have 'space' at all. Cause I remember it was a big part of the story 🤣
Another early Josh Hutcherson movie you might wanna check out one day is Bridge to Terabithia. Sad as hell though fair warning lol. Also a very underrated movie i think is worth watching is Small Soldiers.
Totally forgot this classic even existed, awesome!
omg I've seen this movie *so* long ago and seeing this thumbnail just reactivated some of my braincells
22:27 You know they kinda remind me of the humans from avatar well with them training the resources of their home planet, oh that should make a good fan fiction story of them invading Pandora.
I completely forgot this movie even existed! What a nostalgia rush! Also I never realized how much of a jerk Walter was.
Bridge to Terabithia and Zathura made me fall in love with Josh Hutcherson's acting (and face) and it's continued to this day.
One of the best twists in a movie
yall remember cartoon network used to play this every presidents day
This movie really scared me as a kid for some reason lol, Loved the Video!!!!
This is One of my top 5 favorite childhood movies
This film is how The first episode on The 21st Halloween in The Simpsons. Bart and Milhouse play games table and the game is alive. When they finish the game is replay.
I saw zathura in theaters and it was incredible as a kid. I even had the board game.
43:12 Now this, puts a smile on my face 😌
Aw man, never thought you'd react to this man....but from 1 guy to another you gon like it
i remember this movie i recall watching this a while back
29:10 You are good to predicted that plot twist ! 😂
You're amazing tim❤🫠 There are movies I remember because of you 😂😂😂❤
THIS IS MY CHILD HOOD GEM
Childhood classic
I truly wish we had a follow up but no Hollywood went only with jumaji
43:42 I'm trying not to feel personally attacked by the "who wouldn't have figured that out its so obvious" ending to a video about one of the most surprising twists of my childhood yes in retrospect how did I not see it coming but I never met anyone who predicted it on first watch. I also didn't immediately connect the reprogram card with the robot or the robot with the alien. It was like he was 3 steps ahead the whole time and I just feel really dumb right now.
Same 😂❤
