    Script:
    Who is John Galt?
This is one of the most famous questions in modern literature. Even today, over 50 years after it was written, you'll hear people asking it.
    Why?
Because it recalls the riveting suspense story, heroic characters, and powerful ideas portrayed in the bestselling novel Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia on February 2, 1905, Rand became one the most celebrated authors and philosophers of the 20th century. Her most famous novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, still sell hundreds of thousands of copies every year around the world.
Rand lived through the early years of the Russian Revolution, saw her father's pharmacy business confiscated by the Bolsheviks, and experienced the horrors of communism firsthand.
She longed to emigrate to America. In 1926, she did-and never looked back.
To Rand, the United States meant freedom. She saw the Founding Fathers as heroes. They created a country based on individual rights.
"Man's right to his own life, to his own liberty, to the pursuit of his own happiness," she said, means that every individual has a "right to exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself"-nor to the government.
The practical results of the American system, Rand said, could be seen in the skyline of New York City.
"America's skyscrapers," she noted, "were not built by public funds nor for a public purpose: they were built by the energy, initiative, and wealth of private individuals for personal profit. And, instead of impoverishing the people, these skyscrapers, as they rose higher and higher, kept raising the people's standard of living."
Rand advocated pure capitalism, which she described as a system in which "the government acts only as a policeman that protects man's rights." No bailouts, no special favors for big business, no government intervention into the economy.
When people are free to produce and trade, and when the government is limited to protecting rights, everyone benefits. Individuals thrive. Societies prosper.
    How do we know this?
Compare freer, more capitalist societies to less free, more statist ones:
    In Rand's day -
America compared to the Soviet Union.
    West Germany to East Germany.
    More recently:
    South Korea to North Korea.
    Colombia to Venezuela.
Such differences were painfully obvious to Rand. So were their causes.
In Atlas Shrugged, she showed how easily a free society can collapse into a dictatorship. The heroine, Dagny Taggart, works tirelessly and brilliantly to save her family's railroad business, while ever-increasing government interventions destroy businesses and crush the economy.
Meanwhile, one by one, the top producers across various industries mysteriously disappear. No one knows where they have gone. The only clue is a question they leave behind: Who is John Galt?
As the economy crumbles, how do politicians, bureaucrats, and academics react? They blame "the greedy businessman" and decry the profit motive and free markets. Their solution: more government intervention which, of course, only makes the problem worse.
    Sound familiar?
Atlas Shrugged is a cautionary tale about pursuing equality over excellence-state control over free markets-but it's also about the power of the individual and the power of reason.
The individual's reasoning mind, Rand argued, is his tool of knowledge-his only means of understanding what is true or false, how the world works, what is good or bad for his life.
This is the theme of Rand's work more broadly: In order to thrive, to achieve happiness, the individual must think for himself and live by the judgment of his own mind.

@Big Boy Well what do you mean "entirely made up"? It is fiction, true. John Galt isn't a real person you could walk around and point at. I don't see the issue here.
"dystopia we’re people are basically to incompetent to function except for the rich and intelligent people."
It's art. It's a selective recreation of reality based on the artists metaphysical value judgements. The point of the book (well there are many) but the point addressing this comment is that:
      1) All values are produced
      2) Those best able to produce values, produce the most (great bankers, great engineers, great painters, etc.)
      3) Without the most productive, every individual has a more difficult time acquiring values, since less of them are being produced.
      "logical political philosophy."
Objectivism isn't a political philosophy. You could call her positions in politics a political philosophy if you want, but Objectivism is a philosophy, and isn't primarily about politics.

@@tomasmccauley569 Well, I disagree with social darwinism in the metaphysical sense meaning "scientific diversification of species", but it now clear you are talking about social Darwinism in the ethical sense. However, even taking your sentence here, that is not what Ayn Rand believed.
I mean what you have here is incredibly vague. "societies should favor". There is no such thing as a "society" according to Ayn Rand. A society is just a collection of individuals. Individuals can favor or not. Society can't. Individuals can eat. Society can't.
Ayn Rand's view is everyone should "fend" for themselves, this includes the strong. The way you phrased your sentence implies that the strong need "favors" from society (strong in the human context meaning the most rational). The most productive (the strong, the fittest if you want to use that language) don't need favors from society. All values are produced and they produce the most. Most of the wealth in the world, is produced by these people. Therefore if you value the life you live with incredible wealth, it necessarily was produced by these people. In that sense, they deserve your gratitude. The "weak", those who are unable, are the ones who need "favors", since for whatever reason, they are unable to produce. So I'd just recommend to you that you sit down and think a little more carefully about what you are claiming. Usually when somebody is being as vague as you are, it means they haven't thought through what they are saying with precision.

We are all born helpless and dependent on others, and if we are fortunate, work hard and make good decisions, we may progress, become independent, and accomplish great things. There is virtually no limit to what a person or an organization of men and women can achieve working together. What is important is the individual will to achieve success, collaborate with others, and the collective will of different groups of individuals working within various social organizations.

But then, you throw in a "merely" on a derivative aspect of philosophy, when it takes 200+ pages of OPAR to arrive at what she "merely emphasized" so that makes me think you don't know what your talking about, and the fact you mention "free will" or volition as if it was a political concept further demonstrates sloppy thinking.

The most surreal one was when John Galt fixed the electric generator. Also, when everyone died on the train because they evaded the reality in front of them. While in We The Living all the characters were crushed by the state that deprived them of life. It was a slow death and some characters were already spiritually dead. In the case of We The Living it's concretes were present through almost every moment it was a truly rotten society. Rand's criticisms of big government can be right and her views on Christianity wrong (though I think some of her criticisms were on point). This is also a good reason for the separation of church and state: "And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
We do not live in the Kingdom of Heaven but in the City of Man, where we must still develop systems of governance and economic policies that on the surface don't appear to reflect so-called Judeo-Christian values. Capitalism is simply the best system to ensure that people are free to exchange ideas, goods, etc., and thus also have the opportunity to enrich people and the world at large with whatever values they bring to the table. If a democratic and capitalist society does not embody Judeo-Christian values, it is not the fault of the system itself, but of the people within it.
Rand wasn't against charity or doing nice things for people. She very clearly states that people ought to do so if it brings them pleasure. What she opposed were coercive altruism and systems that forced people to give to others by making them feel guilty or by taking their property by force. That's a fairly important distinction.

    • @Gherit1
      @Gherit1 3 года назад +4

I hear ya. For a great deal of my youth, I had known Ayn Rand more as an atheist than a proponent of Capitalism. One does not have be Jewish or Christian in order to believe and endorse thinking as she does. I think you have a hard problem grounding it though.
I think it speaks somewhat well of Dennis or whomever is calling the shots. As in the subject matter of Capitalism over Socialism, one does not have to believe in Judaeo-Christian Values to endorse Capitalism.
Sometimes you gotta trim the fat to get the good stuff. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Her views on being altruistic bothered me as well. It seems to go against how I see American generosity to others and being self sacrificing as a good, moral thing. From my understanding, Rand saw altruism as a slippery slope which dilutes your own personal ambition and creates dependence in those who receive the help. This help can be addictive, be used by government to trap you (i.e. rent assistance, food stamps). As a Christian, I seek to help others, so her views on this didn't sit well. Ayn Rand has an invidualist materialist vision of the world and people 🔧
Being intelligent as she was, her theory is very attractive but true american values are not just about "things" and "human heroes", is much much more, there are higher human values 💛
Of course Ayn Rand is right about freedom and autonomy of the individual 🗽
Only there is no empathy there, no space for the family and the community 🔄
#RealPeople can be #heroes in everyday lives, just look around you, your neighbours, a nurse, a doctor, a policeman, a firefighter, a small busisness owner, a cleaner, a soldier, a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, that's the american idea 💛
    The #dignity of each #life , of each #humanbeing only #highervalues can give, otherwise is each one for himself, and we don't build a country wirhout empathy, #respect , #interaction , #negotiation , #families , #communities 🔄
    That's why we have #keyinstitutions as #justice , #localgovernments , #military , #police , #religion , communities , families, must be defended and respected 🗽

Interesting to hear PargerU speak of Ayn Rand in a favourable light as she would have rejected PargerU's fundamental metaphysics and epistemology as irrational. For example Ayn Rand was a staunch atheist and also accepted Darwinian evolution. She rejected thoroughly Christianity's positions on morality as well. She regarded Christianity's concept of substitutional atonement and "original sin" as wholly obscene and rejected it's reverence for altruism, collectivism and selflessness. She was a strong advocate for rational self interest and individualism and against personal sacrifice. Ayn Rand was not your friend, PragerU.

It's like making popcorn: all the kernels go into the same pot with the same oil and the same heat (equality of opportunity). But there are always some kernels that do not pop with the rest. Fun fact: Anton Lavey based his religion from Ayn Rand's philosophy.
Anton Lavey was the founder of the church of SATAN.
So free market capitalism was the core philosophy of the Lavey form of satanism.
By the way Ayn Rand hated religions.
So these facts proves that Prageru is an oxymoron.
You can't like both judeo-christian values and free market capitalism.
      These things contradicts each other.

@@69smilodrone85 While I agree with this statement: "You can't like both judeo-christian values and free market capitalism.",
You really should be more careful in how you word your comment. Anton Lavey could not have "based" his religion on Ayn Rand's philosophy since there is no conceivable way to arrive at religion through her metaphysics.
"So free market capitalism was the core philosophy of the Lavey form of satanism."
Also, "free-market capitalism" is a political position. It can't the "core" of any philosophy. The "core" of every philosophy is their positions in metaphysics and epistemology. Those two give rise to all derivative branches of philosophy such as ethics, politics or aesthetics.

Then everyone's pay growth will be 0% and possibly lower.
OH and by the way; take out the years 2017 to 2019; those are years of prosperity and are not based on the same old failed economics that oppressed the people prior to Trumps economic initiative. During the Trump economic growth years; the workers pay increased. They were stagnated for decades prior to Trump's economic policies.

Unfortunately, the problem we face today is that more and more people have stopped thinking for themselves. They are unable to reason, so everything they don't understand is now simply unreasonable, and so they look to others to fix their problems, which only leads to bigger and bigger government.
