  • I have a day to spare and the weather was nice so i jumped in the car and drove to Bristol to do a few attempts of the UK's steepest street. I know a lot of hill climb cyclists make this stuff look easy, but im kinda bad at this one!
    16 degree average, 100 meters long, what could possibly go wrong!!!!
    Ive also partnered with Insta360 to help create some of the unique views in this video.
    Apologies about the building work going on, but i had driven all the way to Bristol and well... i did what i could.

    The gradient is 26% not 26 degrees. 26% is roughly 14 degrees

    Ah, a cycling video again. Great. Been a bit "equipmenty" recently.
    Would love to see you take on some of the uk's toughest climbs. Seeing how you would fare on there Witton would be great.

    I live in Bristol and we have a hill climb challenge on every Wednesday (you are welcome to join us). There are lots of similar and fun to ride hills like this in Bristol. In hill challenge night, we do 12 of them back to back. Takes about an hour, 23 km long with 541 meters elevation. The guy holding the KOM on the Vale Street joins to the challenge night as well. I totally understand the requirement of getting the right gear on such hill. What was your gear strategy on your fastest ride? I did not try this hill myself yet but can use your strategy to begin with and see how can I adjust it to my needs.

      So the hard thing is you carry loads of speed coming down the hill- so I eventually was trying to hit it hard at the bottom, then do a double shift and drive through to the top from there. I run a Sram 33-10

    • @muratmustafa4532

      @@thewattlife I do similar in very steep hills. It seems like the best place to the shift in that particular hill is just right after the bottom part of the hill. I use di2 in semi synchro mode so single shift on the front mech activities the rear shift. I found it a bit annoying to do at step hills as it is not very fast. When I do that I do at least one and a half revolution without any resistance which throws me off the rhythm. I switched from that strategy and started to the shift at the bottom of the hill and then ramp up the cadence to make the difference in power. Once I am small ring I can easily shift up and down depending on the gradient with the di2.

    Good thing you wore the skin suit Max, the watts saved at 4mph on a 20 second climb must be off the scale 😜

    Max, gotta say this is one of your best vids, which must of taken a lot of dedication to do. Especially like how you show it "warts and all" One thing though, surely there would of been various cat calls from those builders, or did they end up on on editing floor?

    @14:32 I also find it hard to get the watts down but that's more a reflection of my fitness level and less to do with gradients or gearing.
    There aren't many super steep hills in Maidenhead so I would blame Maidenhead and Windsor Council for not providing the resources you need to get under 20 seconds ;-)
    Having said that, there is a brute of a hill in Marlow apparently...cobbles and very steep. Might be good practice for this ;-)

      Hmmm I absolutely love the 360 cam which is the x4. You can reframe it so it means you can use for horizontal and vertical.
      Plus has a bigger sensor size. But I’m not a hard core racer so i dont mimd having one on the front of my bike, some people might want something smaller but for me its the x4 every time

    yeah need to get on top of the gear with an easy-ish gear or the torque will just kill the legs. But hard on an entry like that.

    Now you have nailed this, try robin hoods bay just nort of whitby in Yorkshire, from the pub at the bottom to the roundabout, and can we start a campaign to get strava to let us select either metric or imperial for each sport, not the whole account, would be much better than the AI rubbish

    • @thewattlife

      I have the IGS800 which I use mostly and that’s excellent.
      For this I used the small IGS300 which is pretty basic and black and white screen but I use it for races and events because it’s small and works perfectly

    You all do the same, run at the bastard downhill and turn in right, and claim to have done the climb No NO NO NO. Come at it uphill and turn left by the steps, only then can you claim to have "Climbed" the street. I am a Bristolian, and if I go at it, that is the way.

    • @neilfox9540
      @neilfox9540 День назад

      @@davependragon1 is there a longer segment with both combined? That seems like a more worthy challenge!

    • @davependragon1
      @davependragon1 День назад +1

      @@neilfox9540Sorry if I came across as a dick, It is just that everyone I have watched on youtube does the climb the way you did. I understood it when the scaffold lorry was in the way. I don't think there is a longer segment, but coming uphill and turning left is just Soooo much harder, I have had mates just stop dead and fall over sideways. I just like seeing people tackle it from the hard side, not the "Easy" side.

    • @thewattlife
      @thewattlife  День назад +1

      Ha I get it- the street that you’re talking about below it is pretty steep in places too. I did it that way because that’s where the segment comes from on Strava, there isn’t a segment I don’t think that includes the street below it.
      Next time I’ll give both a crack
