    The movies stars caricatured in this short are listed below according to their first appearance:
    0:38 - Laurel and Hardy,
    0:53 - Jimmy Durante and Buster Keaton who were briefly teamed in MGM features at the time,
    0:59 - It's either Lionel Barrymore in character as “Rasputin” or his brother John Barrymore as "Svengali" both popular films at the time ... my guess is it's Lionel.
    1:06 - The four Marx Brothers: Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo,
    1:18 - Mae West,
    2:30 - Joe E Brown,
    2:57 ¬ Jean Malin, well known in the 1930s as a female impersonator and for being an openly gay man.

    As long as we are talking about "inside jokes" in this vintage cartoon, I would be remiss if I did not point out that at 1:36 "Chico" Marx says "Wiolets are blue" (pronouncing the "V" as a "W"), which is true to the affected dialect that "Chico" Marx spoke in the Marx Brothers movies. One of the most memorable scenes with "Chico's" W/V transposition was where someone mentioned a "Viaduct" and "Chico", misunderstanding, asked "Why a Duck?", and the other said very clearly "NO, I said *VIADUCT* ", and "Chico" again repeated emphatically " Yes, but WHY A DUCK?". The further discussion went along the lines of Abbot and Costello's comical "Who's on First" dialog.

Iwerks Flip The Frog and Willie Whopper cartoons are full of tasteless, raunchy gags, (A goat bleating "God damn", Flip trying to milk a bull, Saint Peter giving the finger to an aviator, twice!, etc), and all sorts of raw sexual innuendo ( In "Phoney Express" with Flip The Frog, a bandito and a horny old maid are trapped in a folding bed that folds up into a cabin wall. Suddenly the vertical mattress begins to jiggle and cartoon love-hearts shoot out of it). In a lot of ways, Ub Iwerks was the John Kricfalusi of the Great Depression.

      "By Heck!", and its a phonograph record. At this point, Iwerks, to cut costs, used store-bought 78 rpm records to create cartoon sound tracks. This cartoon- Which was the last Flip The Frog cartoon to be released by MGM, by the way- Features "By Heck!" by The Victor Novelty Orchestra, and "Mama Ines" by The Havana Novelty Orchestra, both on the RCA Victor label. The Fleischer Brothers would also use phonograph records in their Talkartoon and Betty Boop cartoons, "Wise Flies" and "Betty Boop, M.D." being two good examples.

      The music on the soundtrack was culled from two "78" recordings; the second was Nat Shilkret's 1930 rendition of "Mama Inez" (as the "Havana Novelty Orchestra")

      @@fromthesidelines - I love how the animator synched the "walking" of the celebrities with the beat of the music at the beginning, especially Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers. And i originally thought the ghoulish laughter within the Mama Inez tune was dubbed in especially for the cartoon, and i was surprised when i heard the laugh on another vid on RUclips that it was actually part of the original recording. That laugh must have been hot stuff back in those days. I would have loved to have seen those performers live. I guess it was the trumpet player stopping to laugh? Do you know the name of the tune at the beginning of the cartoon?

    There was a live action movie from 1933 called "Our Betters" where there is a grotesque gay character that seems to be a live action version of this gay cartoon character. Here is a clip from the movie when he is introduced:

    It's ironic that people are saying that the depiction of the dandy is homophobic. There's nothing there to suggest that he's gay, only foppish which has nothing to do with sexual orientation. That's some serious and incorrect stereotyping.

    • @rivera229
      @rivera229 2 года назад +19

      It's called queer coding, and there are some suggestions that this person is meant to be a gay character because back then this was how gays were depicted as. Basically these very camp, foppish pansies. In Vaudeville they were known as the Nance, and depicted as feminine men. This despite the fact that gay men come in all sorts of ways, but the belief was that if you were gay you were obviously a feminine man who only cared about his looks and was too delicate. Being foppish doesn't have anything to do with sexual orientation *today*, but back then everyone thought it just made sense. It is why some gay and lesbian joints that took things seriously would ban anything camp, especially during the 30's when LaGuardia was trying to close down burlesque shows. It was mostly to stay undercover and not attract the attention of undercover cops as well as because these places felt camp was degrading.

    I….Honestly cant tell if this is ment to be offensive or trying (key word..TRYING) to be progressive for back then? like- yes they have him be a sterio type but- at least hes not mean or shown to be a hateful character. No one insulted him. And the only reason why people leave the bar is because he accidentally gets transformed into this big grumbling monster. Him turning back into his flamboyant and happy self is the solution and it saves the bartendors life. So in a way- i..geuss you could interpret this as a postive attempt? Im not sure honestly! Whats your take?
