Revving the engine a touch higher can make them more efficient. I find climbing hills in power mode gives me better economy than in economy mode in my Falcons, because they gear down to increase the revs.

I'm actually willing to bet having Jeff out of economy mode helped it. Especially up the hill. My Honda HR-V has an economy mode and, depending on the situation, can actually get worse mileage in it. If the conditions are right, it will return better mileage, but barely. It mostly just makes the car less responsive. I usually just leave it in normal mode unless I'm big time hypermiling.

I leave my Toyota Cressida in power mode, cause I’ve seen no difference in fuel economy using it, and I get full access to the rev range when I put my foot down. Normal mode restricts the revs to ~4000rpm and shifts really early, which is annoying on highway on-ramps.

The serious hypermilers and racers also remove the asphalt sound deadening sheets, which tend to be where a huge chunk of the weight is. You can use dry ice to freeze it and it'll basically shatter if hit with a hammer, which makes it easy to remove. Of course, standard cautions apply when working with dry ice, so try not to get injured or dead if you go that route.

Many modern automatic transmissions have a lockup clutch inside the torque converter that the transmission engages above a certain RPM. If your transmission is slushy and slippy at driving speeds, it could be the lockup clutch. Or maybe your car doesn't have one in the first place.

Would love to see how some older turbo cars would perform on the Literboard. I know they reauire a completely different driving strategy to get good fuel economy, I daily drive an old Volvo S60R, but ive noticed that they can do alright with fuel economy with their power output if you're mindful of the operating conditions. Gotta have a boost gauge if you wanna do a really good job though, you have to stay out of the boost to make good mpgs.

What about: fresh plugs, fresh injectors, fresh transmission fluid, (not sure if that engine uses HFM sensors etc. but get fresh sensors on everything (Chinese if need be) just to see if it makes the difference. Clean the TB and any sensor too expensive to change

+1 on a tuneup, I don't think it's right, but I absolutely would not go changing sensors just for the heck of it, especially not with aftermarket. OEM only. Cleaning them (MAF, cam, crank, etc.)? Yes.

My best bet for its “Hill” performance, outside of general “Legally Classified as a Classic Car for insurance purposes” Hijinks, is that the reduced weight decreased traction on the hill. Probably not noticeable on flat ground but once that bad boy has to deal with that incline, those few extra pounds might’ve made the difference.

3:04 (In response to the text) Automatic transmissions are the second worst thing to ever happen to a gas-engine powered vehicle. They're pure garbage and for the lazy and uncoordinated, The only reason to have an automatic is if you're handicapped and don't have a functional leg to use a clutch.
The first worst thing to happen to cars is touchscreens. Built-in cellphones to distract "drivers" from driving.
Manual transmissions can help solve a big portion of the distracted driver problem. You need both hands to operate the vehicle. No free hand for thumbing Twatter. No free hand to be hunting for basic things buried in layers of menus and settings. You just drive.
And no, the text wall was indeed not up long enough to read. I had to pause.
    ♥The vids. Thank you, Wade!
