    There is absolutely nothing cooler than the isle of man tt sidecar race. The trust they have in each other is insane. When you see a dude take a corner and the passenger just sticks his head out and they are 1mm away from the wall at 120 mph is crazy.

    Here in The Philippines, we called it Tricycle. It is a public transport mainstay. It is usually a 100-175cc motorcycle attached to a roofed sidecar with artwork designs or just a plain shiny stainless steel.

    In the 1970s i had a stock 1950 Harley-Davidson Panhead with sidecar (plus reverse gear) that i used going to college during our snowy Wisconsin winters. It was a BLAST. But every spring i was always ready to remove the sidecar and ride solo again. Both are fun and have their place. 😂

      I'm sorry you had to ride a Harley. No one should be subjected to that kind of torture. I know you had to convince yourself that it was enjoyable like some twisted form of Harley stockhome syndrome, but you're safe now. You dont have to endure that abuse anymore

      Do you remember how high reverse gear was. I tried fully engaging the clutch in reverse on a 48 Pan with sidecar, my suggestion is don’t try it. I had the sidecar in the air in reverse and not on purpose. Scared the H out of me but managed to stop. Other than that “flying the chair” is fun!

    • @browngreen933
      @browngreen933 10 месяцев назад

      Yes, reverse was geared rather high. You couldn't reverse fast backwards with much control. I only used it when necessary. No trick riding. But it was useful, even when the sidecar was off if you got stuck in the mud.

    Having owned a motorcycle sidecar outfit, I can recommend them for transporting children. This is because:
    (1) You cannot hear the children, in the sidecar, whinging.
    (2) If, for some reason, you can somehow hear the child whinging, simply remove the muffler from the motorcycle, which will drown out the annoying noise.

  • @oldamericaniron5767

    Another probably little known fact. In early America the rural roads being dirt would be quite difficult to navigate and although a Model T was cheaper to buy than a Harley with sidecar the Harley with sidecar was easier to get unstuck on muddy roads gaining them favor. Also early Harley sidecars had an adjustable sidecar wheel so you could move wheel out to match existing ruts in the road. I have ridden on dirt where width doesn’t match ruts in road and it is very difficult.

  • @ViscountAlbany

    I thought sidecars became popular because a young man could have a motorbike as his personal transport and then quickly add the sidecar when he got a wife. I suppose that's an over-simplification. Incidentally, the '90s S symbol' is very much older than the 1990s; Lemmino has a video on its history if anyone wants to know

    • @rickconstant6106
      @rickconstant6106 10 месяцев назад +2

      That's right, especially in the UK, where it was a lot cheaper to keep the bike and add a sidecar than buy and insure a car, which would also require a car driving licence. This also led to the popularity, in the 50s and 60s, of 3-wheel cars, which were classed as motorcycles for licensing and taxation purposes, so could be driven without taking a car test, and had lower running costs, even if they did handle like a giraffe on roller skates.

      They exist mainly to make a motorbike more car like in capability without costing as much as a car.
      Thats the reason for them in asia as well. Just a wheel, some steel and welding and boom now you can transport wife AND the kids.

      As an owner of an Ural 750 with similar setup, I completely agree! I have spent weeks on end on every one of my bikes on the TET and I have to say that, even though much slower than my GS, Himalayan or KTM 1200, the sidecar has been the must fun offroad (especially due to 2WD and reverse)... being able to plow thtough mud when the others are stuck or drift at every turn on icy roads is magical!

    In 1979, I took my wife and two kids on a 4 week camping trip covering the western U.S. and western Canada. Our vehicle was a BMW R75/5 with a Ural M66 sidecar. Two tents, four sleeping bags, ice chest, Coleman stove, clothes, fishing gear, etc.
    In 1997, I became the first person to complete the Iron Butt rally with a sidecar. Still piloting hacks to this day. Too bad more aren't on the roads in the country.

      What you should want is another classic bike with a sidecar. A Triumph, Enfield, Harley, maybe a Moto Guzzi. I had a Ural. It was fun to ride when it was working. The company has the best warranty in the business. You'll be using it if you get one! Seriously, if you're going to plonk around town slowly on short rides with the dog or grandkids, the Ural is fine. But if you expect real utilitarian use and plan to ride it as real transportation, get something modern. With the Ural, I'm sure the 1930s German engineering is solid; it's the modern Russian, now Kazakhstan, quality control that is the concern. Maybe Kazakh quality control is a step or ten better than the Russian quality control from 2014. Good luck if you go that route!

    Sidecars are a very lucrative form of public transportation in many south east Asian countries. They transport hundreds of people on an 8-hour work day and is a very cheap way to go around places within a 30km radius.

    I liked side car or side hack on dirt bikes at motocross races in western WA in 1970s & 1980s. The guy on side hack balanced around & leaning to keep the bike from rolling. There was an old tv program from 1969, the Sidehackers dirt bikes with side hacks on a flat track it was about racing on flat tracks.

    Maybe in the U.S. where riding motorcycles is more of a hobby than an actual mode of transport. In less developed countries it's a legitimate and practical form of transportation for the commuting public. Anyway, I wouldn't mind owning a Ural if they weren't so prohibitively expensive. 20K+ but has a 750cc engine making less than 50hp? Guess it makes sense since they're based on pre-WW2 BMW boxer engines.

    Nowadays we can say that sidecars were just a jank stop gap to cars being too expensive, because if we look at it objectively, it's an idea that had no businesses becoming an actual thing.

    They exist because once apon a time cars were way too expensive for most people, while a motorbike & sidecar was a lot cheaper way for a man to take their family with them (2 on the bike, 2 more on the side car). Unlike these days.

    I can scarcely believe those sidecar racing passengers. The level of strength and fitness to hold those positions is up there with Olympic gymnasts, except they're doing it at 100 mph through bumps and vibrations and buffeting. And if they screw up instead of falling over and twisting an ankle they flip the bike.
