I used to run motorcycle tours from the UK to Switzerland and one time, back in 2002, an American couple booked me to take them out to Swiss. They had shipped their bike, an 1800 Goldwing, from Washington State to the UK, and spent maybe a month touring over here. They then wanted me to take them out to Swiss to get used to riding in Europe as well as doing a bit of riding in the Alps. Well, they had a great time in our hotel near St. Moritz sitting on the balcony, with a drink in hand, admiring the views.
BUT, I will say something. On their wing, which was loaded up to the gills with everything they could possibly need for a multi month tour of the UK and Europe, they could keep up with me on my Pan European and I'm not a bad rider. I just couldn't lose them! That bike, 2 up, fully loaded, could stay with me however fast I rode. What a great bike and what a great couple!
im in skagit valley. did they say what town or what part of washington?
I’m the fortunate new owner of this awesome Goldwing!
Roy Hoover congrats. Awesome bike.
Enjoy it man. Im really jealous
So how is that rear car tire working out for you?
Awsome man if you wanted to hit the turns a little harder than casual cruising does the car tire effect that? I'm considering it. Most the time it's just cruising but you know goldwing's can keep up and even pass sport bikes all day. Just wondering.
yeah, roy, rub it in ya bastage
35,000 miles is the break in period on a new wing not the lifetime of the bike
If you're not riding overly hard or taking it on long trips (idk why you would own a wing and not take it on trips) then a car tire will last the lifetime of the wing
agreed. almost every time this dude spoke he showed his ignorance.
he might have meant from the time you buy it till you sell it. he did however cut off the traffic at 8:24. he didnt have a green arrow.
@@googoo-gjoob that's funny
Agree, he must not have much exposure to Goldwing's longevity. I've seen dozens over 100k and several over 200k, even saw one with 360k on, normal maintenance, no failures. I've got one with 60k on it, Ill never even get close to the bikes life limit.
i have had 4 wings, 3 GL1800's, and a 78 gl1000...have run car tires on the 1800's for 7 years now...with car tires on the rear, darkside works!!!, i ride like a beast as does the GL18 with car tire... car tire for this function, does it all, grips, long wear, comfort for passenger and proven safe,......over 1 million miles under my fast ass in many years DOCUMENTED !! have had 30 odd bikes in my 47 years of riding and i have over 1,000,000 miles of touring this great country on mostly back roads under that same fast ass..ride smart, live to ride ride to live....i will be 60 years of age in March and hope to ride another 20 years on touring beasts..
G. Christoph Du Bois , what brand and size car tire are you running ?
george christopher dubois what car tire fits this goldwing?
george christopher dubois I'm
george christopher dubois what size tire & brand you run on your 1800
I’m just 58 now.. got a 2008 Suzuki Boulevard C90T 1500cc
I drive 600-1000 miles a week..
I love riding... I went out yesterday for 6 hours...
People ask me what I do, where I go..???
I go and do everything ..
Mostly coastal rides gulf coast of Texas...
Near 200 miles yesterday alone.
It’s an addiction.
Adrenaline addicted on the utmost convertible.
I listen to motorcycle head phones... (80’s rockin to the riddin..!
Awesome bike! I hear many others are going to the “dark-side” - what they call it when hey put car tires on a bike! Nice (although when I had my GoldWing I didn’t do it). But, I’d consider doing it when I get my next bike.
Keep the shinny side up...👍
I have two car tires on my Wing. Of course, it is a trike! Those tires are rated for 50,000 miles and they look great! (The Old Biker Guy)
Hi Sean, thank you so much for this review. This is the best review you have ever made. It's also the best used Goldwing I have ever seen. I've never owned a motorcycle although I've ridden a few. I'm 61 now and this is the bike I would really love. I have a dream which is to tour Southern Africa and to tour across America. I'm a musician in the bluegrass, Western Swing, Country, Blues and fok genres but love all good music. A beautiful tourer like this with a cruiser trailer for a guitar and luggage for the missus and I would really work. Your videos are of such high quality it feels as if I'm riding the bike. Thank you again and God bless.
I did just like you said . I bought a 2010 GW Nav,abs. The guy put on custom pipes, under lighting multi changing colors. GW rugs in trunks, spoiler. and loaded with future rides he left in his nav home field. I saved a lot of $$$ Thanks
Just saw a video on the 2018 Gold Wing 1800 describing a 7 speed overdrive automatic or optional 6 speed overdrive manual transmission .Ever the innovators!
“The world’s fastest armchair”
Thanks for sharing this ride with us
It looks like a rolling lazyboy
IMO if you are riding two up, there is no more comfortable bike made.
It's called, Running on the dark side. I put a car tire on my Valkyrie. Wore great. The car tire was horrible on a dirt road. You need the radious for rough dirt roads. Rough freeway kept me on my toes as well.
Hey Dude! Why you always downshifting mc when you know you’re coming to a complete stop? That just wears out clutch and trans and puts stress on driveline! Remember brakes are always cheaper than clutches!! Also way smoother ride without all that shifting! That’s what I was taught and I’ve been driving over 50 yrs.
And he’s a professional my dude
I LOVE my Gl1800 !! Best bike ever and I’m putting a car tire on mine next year after I wear out my newer rear tire.
There are a LOT of pros and cons about car tires on a Goldwing or any motorcycle. Just Google it - "car tires on a Goldwing". Car tires, belts and sidewalls are made to run flat. So, they have weak sidewalls compared to a bike tire which has to flex when leaning into a curve. Plus, there's that flat car tire profile which must affect the cornering handling as compared to the more rounded bike tire profile. But, I suppose if most of your riding is on the highways which are mainly flat and straight then a car tire might be acceptable. Google it and draw your own conclusions.
honda gold wing is my number favourite motorcycle rides good i mean I've seen 80s goldwings still riding i like also ultra classic but i don't see older Harleys riding around.
These are a really beutifull bike and yes i love that color also obviously the previous owner was a member of the darkside plenty of pros and cons on car tyres ,the engines just sound so sweet these have been the pinacle of tourers for a long time smooth ,power comfort what more can you ask for.
I love my GoldWing I hope to upgrade to a newer model in the next couple years
The only legitimate issue I have with putting a car tire on the rear of my cruiser is the bead geometry. Car tires and motorcycle tires have different shaped beads. I am waiting for someone in the aftermarket to make a rim for these heavy Honda battle cruisers like the GL and VTX that will mate properly to a car tire bead, then I am all in.
IT WORKS ALREADY..
Love your episodes and channel Sean. Myself and the other half are thinking of visiting the US from Ireland next year and doing a tour from New York all the way down to you to check the shop out.
Sounds like a nice trip.
I LOVE my Wing, BUT only as long as they combine the best features of the Kawasaki Concours (brightest headlights, 6 speed, electric windshield, tetra lever shaft drive, ground clearance, best seating, anatomically correct positioning & handlebar ergonomics, and electronics) AND the Goldwing (towing power, smooth ride, weather protection, 2-up comfort, GPS - lifetime updates needed ). 6 gallon tank w/0.5 reserve and Bluetooth wouldn't hurt. MODERNIZATION!
"Modernization" is killing motorcycles.
That was a lovely scenic ride - Thanks
God bless you guys for being real and honest
You will get way more miles with the car tire on it. Before needing a new tire.
These Honda GoldWings lifespan are legendary, much like the Honda Accord and Civics, with mileage well into the triple digits. On the other hand, as much as some people would like to believe, the car tire was never designed for the unique performance characteristics of a motorcycle. Dark Siding as it is known, is living in the world of the unknown. Without sufficient research or the supporting data on the use of car tires on Honda’s 1k pound touring rig.
I have two Gold-wings ,Aspencade and Interstate 900 lbs plus both are top heavy to drive in the city .I also can’t back them up. I had to put a carousel in my garage to turn them around. 1980 Interstate is fully loaded with only 19,000 Km. 1983 Aspencade is fully loaded with 165,000 Km. I have a 2008 Honda 750 Shadow Areo for city driving or a little highway 😅 . Their all kept up to date with maintenance and original parts. I love them all. Any way how is that one to drive in the city like for a couple of hours maybe three times a day?😊
I did the darkside tire thing on my roadliner I sold the bike but I had a new motorcycle tire put on to replace the car tire I didn't want to sell it like that.
I noticed he didn't get on the freeway like I did on a test ride. Still needs another gear top end. The tired oh it's supposed to wind tight at 70 doesn't work for me.
I love the wing
I have that bike color and 2007 and it is a gem. I love it
I noticed that you not corner very hard with the car tyre..........how does it handle excessive cornering?
ONLY 35K on a car tire? Odd, I've run 3 car tires consecutively on my 91 Wing averaged 80,000 miles each. That's, at times, hauling a rather large trailer.
I agree that the car tire was not designed to be on a motorcycle for cornering ! I wouldn't even think of putting one on my Goldwing ! I have ridden a couple motorcycles with a car tire and I did not feel safe on curves. I also rode an old Harley FLH that had the old square tires on the front and back, what a pig that was to handle. I value my life and even more so my passenger's to much to cheap out and run a car tire. Motorcycle tires are designed for motorcycles and car tires for cars..
your a dip shit i have over half million miles on car tires on my bikes
Doug Kershaw good for you.
Lay that wing down on exit at 60 me no if u get wheel hop u will different outlook on it
The car tire would handle dirt and sand better. Especially bias ply.
Are your legs touching the fairing? That is the one concern of mine being right at 6' tall. I have heard that 6' is right at the limit.
What size tire is the one you have installed at the rear.
One other thing...yeah lots of Wingers beg for a 6th gear....I have always felt like it was not necessary....notice how up above 70mph it really smooths out even more!!!!
good bike but i have both 1500 and 1800 since yesterday and i prefer the confort of the 1500 but the motor of 1800 , :)
You didn't signal right turn blinker when you pulled out onto the highway, and you didn't account for the car coming up behind you....I saw him in your side view mirror and he was only ten feet by the time you accellerated up to speed. Be careful dude!
Way way way more than 35,000, think he was thinking 350,000 miles?
Good luck leaning. the bike over in a emergency, replace the tire. If you can afford any Golding, you can afford new tires.
I think honda engineers would have tried all sorts of tyre,s on a goldwing use what Honda tells you to use .
I find it strange how some people will buy a 1800 bike and what till the car part stores put oil on special and buy cheap filter,s on you 28k bike use what Honda tell you to use i kept my 1800 in my Daughters old bedroom 24/7 to keep the UV rays away from the plastic parts on your bars i changed my oil every 3k with Honda filter never missed a service .And the bike will r/e you ten fold enjoy ?
I have ridden on a friends wing with a wide car tyre and i ride mine on cobras, there is very little difference at all in handling, they lean just as far, car or bike. But i choose to buy the cobras for my own preference.
Obviously this guy has no idea what he's talking about or does not do serious miles
Tell that to the thousands that run deals gap with this very set up.
You know nothing of which you speak
i know someone that has 460000 miles on his 1800 before he needed a overhaul. its not like a Harley Davidson every 60000 or 70000 miles.
I saw one with 510,000 miles.
How much is this gold wing if second hand?
¿where can I find the tire?
I’ve had many different motorcycles over the years.. I’ve never actually owned a gold wing but I have ridden them and I have several friends who own them. The gold wing is the best most comfortable motorcycle on the planet. If properly maintained they are also at least a 500 thousand mile bike.
Thanks for the ride
What size car tire is on the rear?
Sean I agree with the people that say you need to learn what you are talking about. First you say it is a " comfort" it is NOT there is no heat lever on the left nor the heated seat/grips controls . As for car tires there are people that like them. that is up to ones taste I'll go for the bike tire. You cut three left corners off that you were over the yellow lines and on the on coming traffic side of the road! Not a safe way to ride. As for life on bike I put 300000 on mine in 18 months so I hope there is a lot more than 35000 to the life! They run 200000+ . The 2012 -2017 as a new look to it than the 2001-2010. little changes in them.I know you are trying to sell it, BUT learn about what it is that you are selling. AND RIDE SAFE!
The car tire did not come on the Goldwing from the factory.
Maby not automatic. It is a dual clutch transmission or DCT . Hmmm
Lots more life in wing after 35k seen with 300k bulletproof bikes if cared for
Hi
Please I need your help
Is there any difference in periodic maintenance for 2010 goldwing airbag model and the model without
Thanks
Is that bike not amazing bro? You can see why I am partial to a Wing! You can see how you can easily log 500-800 miles a day i do not run a car tire but I go thru a couple sets a year usually running about 20k miles/year on my Wing. Most Wing riders are older riders and therefore do TAKE care of their stuff!!! Great vid. I have a 2008 model.
+MemphisMike respect the wing
What are some good helmets to buy?
I have not own a bike in a long time and they are much different now than 20-30 years ago.
Shoei RF-1400. You won’t be disappointed
Did you actually just say a goldwings lifespan is 35000 miles.. ive got 75000 on my 2019 .... Had 218000 on my 07 when i traded it in .... Both look like and ride like new
Where's your gloves?
Oranje is the national dutch royal family colour. Thats why European like this bike in this colour.
So no dark siding
hehe, 35k mile, life of the bike eheheh LOL try about 200k+
The best touring bike. The Cadillac of motorcycles.
scooby0006,....more like the BMW
Have you seen Cadillacs recently. Cadillac is the new saturn
short step BMW is the BMW of motorcycles
scooby0006 Cadillac suck
Too bad a bike this expensive doesnt come with flashers
Which car tire?
"Oh no...."
You are a very lucky guy bud .
The car ride thing is called going to the dark side.
35k miles??? "Life of the bike???" My '08 Honda 'Metropolitan' has 17k on it...and looks/performs as 'showroom fresh'.(original 'untampered' engine/power-train and exhaust...but w/just enough 'performance upgrades' to hit 42mph WOT)This little scooter is likely to out-live me! (I'm almost 64) Properly cared-for...a 'Gold-Wing' is 'life-time' purchase!(I've heard-of and seen 'wrecked' or 'neglected' Wings being 'down for the count'...but never of one 'worn-out' from riding)
you must be a sales man not a winger! good luck
I think he is actually a car tire salesman. 35000 miles is the entire life of the bike?
Of course he meant the current life of the bike, not its total life.
A couch on wheels
The guy never once used the turn signals. I hate that!
What size car tire? Please and make
I hear winters are better softer
195/60R 16 , I also run a car tire on my 02 GL1800
I hope that the entire life of the bike is a lot more than 35000 miles. The motorcycle tires I put on mine certainly last a lot longer than. couple of months.
I thought the same thing. It was not a good sales pitch but he did not say how many miles were already logged.
Joseph Howard ,The tire on a goldwing will go bad around 18 to 23ooo miles,A gold wing will run for 250,000 miles Sir.
Never got more than 12 or 13K out of a m/c rear tire, that's why I went with runflat car tire, 23-25K on them.
Same as my bike! Except...replace the grips with a thicker pair! You will not be sorry! Rides like a 600 cc sport bike! Get an Arai helmet, by the way! It is your head!
35,000 miles,, the life of the bike. Wrong info dude.
Great tank indeed
the jaspion motorcycle...
I like bikes not computers on two wheel...
This bike should have been double darksided!
My dads gold wing has 100k on it so 35k is not the life of the bike haha never had a issue
Godzilla of Scooters!!
Itd be cool to put offroad tires on a goldwing. Turn it into a dual sport type bike
thats what im saying it would be a blast
@@SrkcyclesI'm looking into getting an older wing for myself. I wanna turn it it to a dual sport type bike
@@andrewtucker9279 i plan to do that next year and get a trailer to tow up into the cascades. get myself a GF then meet up with Bigfoot for a forest orgy. lol
i don’t get the title?
JBG TRAVELS he wants you to buy this Goldwing!
Nice one!!
I could be wrong…but I heard that a car tired is baaaaad for a bike. No?
I'm watching you ride without gloves and listening to what you think is important, riding in the wrong position, not signalling at all and realized I am wasting my time here.
he also cut off a car at 8:23 hehe :D didnt have a protected green arrow.
yeah,,he's not a MC rider noway
I think he either mis spoke, or he's thinking if a guy rides 1500 miles a year then this tire will last 20 years then he'll get a new bike, but alot of gw riders ride that in a year or 2....
joracer1 1500 miles in 2 yrs. most Wingers ride that about every 6-8weeks!!!
MemphisMike me and the wife just logged 5k in 10 days. Needles highway and Iron Mt in SD were amazing.
Dammit MAN!!!!
MemphisMike 92 GL 1500SE btw. No break downs. Proud of the old girl! Tail of the Dragon aint got nothin on Iron Mt lol
25mph ... woooooosh... say what ? ... never mind
8:24 im sure they didnt appreciate you cutting them off.
He shouldl be having some glowes
Love this bike
35,000 miles is the life of the bike Fuck that!
It’s practically a car on 2wheels
Beautiful bike
she is sold;[ I love that bike
Psalm.1.25 Always love golding unless u like CBR Better
Why a car tire on the rear? Ok he answered 5:15 why the car tire is on the rear.
Is this a bike that you can lane-split with in heavy traffic? I need something like this for the nightmare commute of the SF Bay Area.
Sure. You can squeeze these things into space like a street triple /s
The entire life of the bike is more like 300-400k miles.
He doesn’t know anything about the Goldwing
Congrats sir
My son has one and bought the car tire because he got it as a “run flat” tire. That was reason enough for him to try it!
"the entire life of the bike"? No, not only no, but wow, you dont know wings hell no
My 2000 wing has 24,000 on it 😁
