    Hi Canna, I thought I would let you know that yesterday I was able to pay off my student debt that I had for years. I chose yesterday as my deadline because it was also my birthday so I thought it would be a good date to start with better habits. I was so inspired by your videos about getting rid of debt that I have just worked hard for it, I had to force myself to focus and step by step I was able to "find" and collect money for it. I am incredibly happy now and feel like I have a little bit more control of my life. I want to thank you for the inspiration, I would not be able to do it this fast without you! xx

    I think it's possible to be minimalist and still have a small stockpile of certain items. If I'm maybe on my last toothpaste and I see toothpaste half price or buy one get one free I'll buy a couple at that point so i know I have one for when I run out and another spare and I only paid for one. Currently I'm halfway through a deodorant and I always buy the same one, today I saw it half price so I bought my backup today rather than wait until it's almost done and have to pay full price. I also buy cruelty free as much as possible and those brands are on offer less frequently so when I see them reduced I always consider whether I will need those between now and the next time they may be reduced in price. I don't do this for everything but products I use regularly like toothpaste, handwash, dish soap etc and like I say, only if I think I'll need it before it will be reduced in price again (usually 2-3 months)

      I'm with you on that, Diane! I often buy in a stock for a few months etc and I'm OK with that. I never buy stuff just for the sake of it anymore - it has to be something I really use.

    • @frappalina

      minimalism doesn't mean not to have staples of products that you are sure that you will use eventually! minimalism means to avoid buying things that you DON'T NEED and you won't use. just don't buy too many staples if things are going to expire. cheers :)

      I just bought some cruelty-free products for my next home (I'm moving in a couple weeks) like cleaners and dish soap. I will end up refilling the containers when they're empty either with my home-made cleaners or big jugs of dish soap, but I find their spray bottles hold up longer than the ones from the dollar store. The one I'm currently using (refilling the eco-friendly bottle) is starting to lose it's spray after nearly a year. Before, using the dollar store ones, it would barely last 3 months (IF I didn't drop the bottle, as I'm a klutz.)
      Anyways; I'm all for practical stockpiling on frequently used products! And yah cruelty-free!

    Minimalism is such a journey...I have embraced my make up, books, etc declutter while embracing how much I love my handbags! they are now displayed so I can/see enjoy them even when I am not using them. It is about what I need and what brings me JOY....if your make up brings you joy and makes you smile thats all that matters. I do find it interesting that you got rid of the dog collar....I would not have....I would have framed it or something. Alot of minimalists feel they need to get rid of sentimental things and I really dont understand why.....my grandmothers cookie jar is also on display...brings back good memories

    I stay stocked on things I use regularly. That's more simple because it saves me time. And my regular weekly shopping list stays simple. Plus necessities are good for emergency preparedness.

    • @SimonHaestoe
      @SimonHaestoe 8 лет назад +1

      I agree. I think the "thing" is to put those stocks away, so you don't see them, they're not in the way physically and MENTALLY. It's all about not being cluttered, physically as that will affect us mentally and emotionally.

  • @BitaG
    @BitaG 8 лет назад +10

    I think a better approach to items like toothpaste is actually to stockpile them only when they are on sale. Toothpaste is an item you need and use at least twice a day so stockpiling 3 or 4 when the price gets low is a better way to "save money." This is just how I see it though. It may not be minimalist, but it's practical!
    By the way, thanks for all the great information you provide with us! I'm a 20 year old student in the US and I enjoy a lot the knowledge you share with us!

    For me, stockpiling simplifies my life. By stockpiling on non perishables and smart eating on the fresh produce like fruit and vegetables (we eat produce that have shorter lifespan first), I am able to limit my grocery shopping to once every three weeks. Saved me a lot of time, money and sanity! ^__^

    I now embrace being mindful around a pared down life that is very anti-consumerism, slow paced, honoring myself and the people, plants and animals in my world and beyond. i am a woman and I am older and have raised kids, had careers, unexpected divorce, have had to make peace with some big things and have felt loss, deeply.I have served others my whole life but not myself, always waiting to take care of myself at some point, later. It takes a lot of effort to turn away from all the business in life and turn towards yourself. That uncomfortableness, alone with yourself, quiet, thoughtful is what I am striving for now. it is wisdom I seek. I appreciate your thoughtful message.

    I started minimalism accidentally! When I moved to university, I could only bring 2 suitcases so I brought the essentials. Then I only bought things that I needed because it was all I could afford. Every year at uni, I've had to move accommodation so I had to go through and pack up all my stuff at least once a year and it was so easy to get rid of things that way. I didn't even realise this was a lifestyle until I watched your videos but minimalism comes so natural to me now. Only applying to possessions at the moment though, not food or my broader lifestyle.

    Thank you for these great tips. I second your "just in time" technique. I only buy an item when I need it, regardless of the fact whether it is on sale or not. This really helps and I never end up buying things that I do not need. I am looking forward to incorporate minimalism in my life, being a minimalist photographer for a long time.

    The thing I am not minimalist about is my pantry. Because of my food restrictions, it's important for me to have a lot on hand to make everything from scratch, and I was discovering that if I waited until I needed a certain kind of flour to buy it, I would just stop eating that other grain source (which has detrimental effects to my health). What I try to do, to balance this out, is to make sure that I *only* have things in that pantry that I enjoy, that are good for me, and that I actually make use of. I consider this kind of a KonMari compromise. Yes, I keep a well-stocked larder, but I also eat everything there. I very rarely have to throw anything out, and I'm generally good at predicting what I need. It's also helpful because it saves me a lot of stress, elsewhere. If something unpredictable happens with my work hours, I can eat out of my pantry for a week or two at a time. I also don't have to shop as often except for things like produce, which limits my exposure to other parts of the grocery store, where I have to face impulse purchases. And because it is limited, I can also usually visit smaller groceries that don't shock my system as much (I am an Aspie and often face sensory overload at stores).

    I love your minimalist videos and I love this lifestyle. I haven't told many people either and sometimes when I go shopping with them they are so surprised that I'm not spending a lot of money and they are 😄 I just buy what I need and make sure I really love and value what I buy. It doesn't mean I don't get tempted sometimes but I feel so much better just thinking things over. It also helps to check your wardrobe and write down what you really need and take a list with you. I used to go shopping and get so overwhelmed and forget what I actually really needed and buy the things that I didn't really need. And you shouldn't punish yourself if you do get tempted and buy something that you didn't really need. As long as you totally love that item. Setting a budget is really helpful and you can make sure you don't over spend for the month that way you don't feel guilty either. Xoxo

    • @SugarMamma
      @SugarMamma  8 лет назад +1

      I agree and definitely setting up a budget makes a huge difference... You have a strict guideline then and it makes you work out what is really important to you, do really need that new top or shouldn't you be stocking up the fridge for the week or putting your savings towards your credit card debt and so on... xCC

    I would love to see your makeup collection and makeup routine! Also, your skin always looks impeccable, so it would be super helpful if you talked about your skincare (and makeup) from a minimalist's perspective! There is such an overload of information on youtube regarding makeup & skincare, with there being a new 'obsession' almost every week claiming to yield miraculous results. It would so super helpful to narrow down an existing collection and to limit future buys. xoxo

    By far, this is one of the best videos I enjoyed, ( & I like many of your videos) . However, Your no. 9 Tip about learning to be" present in the moment" and about self discoveries, realizations, growing as a person, well it really resonated with me. It actually brought me to tears, but that's a good thing. As I'am getting older there is so much more I want out of my life, and simplifying my life is "one of those things". I have always liked and appreciated simplicity. However, I've had my share of too many kitchen supplies (pots/pans/etc) and holding on to clothing as well, that i just didn't wear. It just brought on so much anxiety. I have been culling/ purging and I feel liberated and I have to say it is "life altering". I was feeling down and out and this simple act of discovery and my journey has been very "uplifting". So thank you, for making note of that, and about not allowing the negativity that comes with the judgement of others, whom simply do not understand. And in my book, that's alright, because I am taking care of me, and this journey has brought me an abundance of happiness.

    I couldn't agree more, I buy everything that I need and nothing at all that I don't. You may imagine how far I get with this. Pretty far and I enjoy it, only this. Usually whatever I once got for a certain price I refuse to pick up more expensive next time, unless emergency, it becomes a life principle after a time...those who should pay more than $160 on a return ticket Europe-Dubai and this keeps them from the trip don't know how to travel. You can get a whole lot for your money if you care.

      It can be very tricky when your living with someone who wants to hold onto everything and you want to let go of everything... I would start with your things that you know you can give away or sell... that way you aren't going to effect your relationship and maybe somehow come to a compromise with everything else you share. If your husband doesn't use some of these items you are wanting to get rid of then it should be a rule that these things have to go... if he can prove that he needs the other items then they are allowed to stay. xCC

    I would love to minimize (get rid of) cc debt. Once cc debt is gone we will go from living on $6,000 including cc debt for a family of three to living on $4,178 without cc debt for a family of three. That extra $ will be able to go to saving for a safe but cheap vehicle.

      Wishing you all the best in squishing that debt once and for all... Keep us up to date on how you are going with it. xCC

    6. makeup. many women buy several lipsticks almost the same color. If we stop to notice this in ourselves, we can now discard some duplicates.

      Hi, I can look into this for you but it might be a little too personal showing all my belongings if you can understand. xCC

      +Sugar Mamma I completely understand. I was watching a 'More Melody' video and seeing her kitchen set up was a real eye opener about how little she felt she needed to live with.

    The first tip on not stockpillling is kind of dumb. It doesnt save any money casue youll buy it in a week if you dont right now, its just putting it off. And as for the saving of space if your that low on space that you cant store extra toothpaste then maybe you should focus on the other 9 tips cause that ridiculous.

    That's ridiculous. If you buy things only when you need them, you'll waste your most precious asset: TIME!
    Toothpaste hardly takes up any space at all, but buying toothpaste will cost you at least 20 minutes, possibly more.

    Someone ridiculed you for having fewer kitchen utensils than other people? Kitchen utensils? Really? REALLY? You should be ridiculing THEM for attributing so much worth to forks and ladles! My gosh... *rolls eyes*
