    Have you ever wanted to create your very own DIY USB cable for your mechanical keyboard? If so, this is the tutorial series for you! Learn from me, VoxelMods, as I share the techniques and methodology that Ive developed over the last year!
    In today's video, you will learn how to sleeve your USB cable with MDPC-X sleeve, a premium alternative to the common paracord based cables. Youll learn how to sleeve the MDPC-X onto your cable, how to secure the ends to your cable with a lighter and clear heatshrink, and youll learn how to add Techflex. I even demonstrate how I strip my USB jacket and seal the sleeve to the cable simultaneously!

    Your cable stripping fingers are really impressive! Are you just using the heat from the flame to melt the cable PVC and pulling? I would love to know exactly how it works and how you do it!

    i love these videos! ive watched cruzcntrl's videos as well and i find yours a lot easier to understand (: its not overwhelming and you seem like a really nice guy (: coiled cables can be pricey and im hoping to get into the hobby!
    one question though: does the clear heatshrink used at around 7:05 just melt the sleeving onto the cable and then it is removed ? or does part of it still remain on the cable?

      Yes, the clear stuff is just utility shrink and gets removed

    which type of techflex would you recommend and what size if i use a paracord 550 type III first layer?

    Great tutorial, everything is clear and on point, thanks for the effort. There's only one question - what's the profit of using both mdpc and techflex? Can it be replaced with two layers of mdpc?

    • @voxelmods
      @voxelmods  3 года назад +2

      Thank you!
      MDPC-X can be layered over itself instead of using techflex. XTC + Classic Small is ideal for that

      @@voxelmods Is there a reason to use MDPC instead of paracord as the first layer? Is it just to speed up the process of sleeving since paracord is slow?

    Can I just use MDPC-X sleeve? Without techflex or second layer of sleeve? What is the reason to use techflex or second layer?

    • @anastasy2
      @anastasy2 2 года назад

      You would be fine using only mdpc-x. It's a very opaque sleeve. I think people use mdpc-x / paracord + techflex for the dual tone look.

    hi, just wondering what size MDPC-X did you use?

    For inner sleeves I noticed you use a lot of MDPCX instead of paracord. Any reason behind that? I know the price isn’t much different

    • @voxelmods
      @voxelmods  2 года назад

      I exclusively use MDPC-X instead of paracord, and there are many reasons why!
      The vibrant colors, excellent thermal properties, lack of an inner core, and overall ease of working with.
      The price of MDPC-X is actually significantly more than paracord, something like 10x per foot IIRC, but I've always found it worth it.
      Additionally, MDPC produces sleeve that is very high quality and has a near-zero level of manufacturing defects. I trust their quality between colors, sizes, and order batches. Not to mention, their team processes orders insanely fast, with orders from Germany getting to me in the US in less than a week.
      That's all to say, MDPC-X is a great sleeve that I prefer strongly to paracord, but I want to stress that I mean no disrespect to makers who appreciate paracord for its own properties!

      @@voxelmods that’s what I kinda figured. I’ve been building cables for the past year. I just got into doing more keyboard / computer forward cables. I was mostly doing stuff for automotive and friends. Wasnt sure because I’ll use paracord for inners if the outer is MDPCX because the weave is so tight. It is a pain to stock both lol

    anyone else burn their fingers trying to pull off the heatshrink after it melted? :/

  • @Strill_

    The shielding needs to be soldered to the metal body of the USB plug. You're degrading your performance by cutting it off.

      The 800+ usb cables I've made have ALL worked as intended as USB 2.0 cables. I apologize, but drain wire is not very applicable to keyboards in my experience. There is no degradation that I've ever seen or measured
