    Although design is an extremely subjective topic i feel BMW has somehow become the old guys and girls in the room. By this i mean they seem to be trying so hard to be young and hip on the outside while being mature and staid on the inside. Yes their cars are still brilliant underneath all the latest design fads, and some people will like the new look but somehow it doesn't seem like traditional bimmer to me. The grill is getting bigger even though it is redundant on EVs.

    • @DocWolph
      @DocWolph 2 года назад +1

      It is more for brand recognition, at a distance, at a glance. Consider vehicles you may have mistaken for something else before you took or got a good look at it. Going "grill-less" only works for a few companies or brands. Usually those that did not have grills with their ICE-Vs or never did, like a start-up's BEV. Still there is little to excuse going "nuts".
      Save for large P/U trucks and SUVs, because of their design intent, not so much for their common usage, most ICE-Vs do not require large or even noticeable grills. The problem is making a ICE-V that looks good AND recognizable with a limited or deleted grill, leaving only a few air intakes for engine breathing and cooling. At least a few non-sports cars did this VERY well, Citroen DS and SM, 1st and 2nd gen Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, 1st gen Infiniti Q45, I know many more can be named.

    Interestingly, in the 80s and 90s BMW was accused of producing "one sausage, 3 sizes", in reference to the fact that the 3 series, the 5 series and the 7 series looked same although they were of different sizes. As a BMW lover I really thought that such criticism was exaggerated. I could see definite distinctions between the three cars. The one thing though that I loved about BMWs was that they always looked like no other car on the road. Those who are old enough will remember the 80s front lights craze started by MB where you had this huge block of headlight in this fat plastic enclosure. Everybody did it except BMW. They stuck with their quad round headlights until everyone decided to join them. This is not to mention that for all those years they were the only company for whom the grille was a brand identity. All the others were coming up with a different grille for each of their cars, on which they had to attach their badges, because without attaching those badges to the grille, their car couldn't be identified from the next. Thus, with BMW the grille has always been a differentiator. Something that sets them apart from the crowd. That is why I love it when they are playing with the grille to make sure that they are as distinct from the copycats as possible. Car manufacturers have copied everything BMW does, but they know that they will never take that grille from BMW.

    Pushing boundaries, that I can take. But they have pushed themselves so far that their cars don't look like Bmws anymore, there is a disconnect that is felt, it looks like a piece of product design rather than automotive design. Donut Media made a great video on why the M3 doesn't look like a bmw and their logic makes sense. Great design sells, the i8 was not something exceptional, but because it looked so damn good that it sold like pancakes. And moreover why is one of the most prestigious performance divisions of any car brand making a crossover to celebrate their birthday, they should have made a supercar as it has been a very long time since bmw has made one, and a supercar having a crazy design can be more acceptable.

Conversely, cars with controversial looks become normal as we learn to live with them and we see them on the road. • @stephanvelines7006
    @stephanvelines7006 2 года назад +11

    Pushing the boundaries is a good thing and design must evolve. Usually design cycles are evolution then disruption (revolution) followed by evolution and so on.
    For BMW the E60 and the E65 were a new departure in the mid 2000s. And people were surprised after the clean, evolutionary E39 and E38 series. BMW Head of Design was heavily criticised for its design departure (even though the cars sold well, despite 2008 financial crash). Most importantly though the cars were relevant. They were BMWs at heart.
    This XM abomination isn’t. It’s the wrong message to celebrate 50 years of BMW Motorsport, the design is polarising but remove the badges, remove the grill nothing tells you it’s a BMW. No “Hofmeister” kink, no signature side line stretching from front to back, looks static, and overstyled.
    If you want good design that pushed boundaries for the brand that’s not the way to go.
    Relevance for the brand is key and the XM does nothing for the brand in that regard.

Some of the old ugly designs are still lingering like the RX and GX. But I have to admit, the rest of their lineup is very striking. Someone would have done the math's and figured out BMW drivers are loyal to the brand, but don't talk about it enough. So "let's use something that will deliberately upset them so we can get further reach (outrage is a perfect marketing tool)". So, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Lambo/M2 "mistake" was done on purpose. If someone will tell you crap is delicacy for long enough, you might end up believe it. Not sure BMW is on a mission to prove this or not, but for now we are at the stage where the vast majority of people with decent amount of common sense look at the Bavarian's creations like they are the result of a madman playing with dog sh*t. Of course you need to push boundaries from time to time and change the rules of the game in order to, well, stay in the game. But: 1) BMW didn't need that (not now, not during the Bangle Butt era); 2) If you really have to do it, just don't forget the result has to be tasteful, and well proportioned. Aggressive and even intriguing, but not lunatic-going-for-eyeballs-with-an-icepick level of desperate for attention design craziness.
    chriscmxiii is spot on with his comment: if you want to see things done right, just look at Hyundai-KIA. Exactly, Sir, their cars look differently AND good in the same time. When I first saw the the 3/4 series I thought it from the Edsel Ford school of design, but, now I really like them. BMW has been here before with Chris Bangle, although I did not like his designs it seem to work. At lease people are talking about them, it's better than being forgotten.

      People are now sacristy appreciating the Bangle-era of BMW cars when it comes to looks. I remember he was quoted as saying “this is the design language of the future”. Turns out, yeah, after all these years, those old cars still look modern.

    Crazy marketing and wacky designs are great if your target market are hip young twenty something's. When you're selling 60 to 80 grand cars, your market is going to be mostly middle aged men and they don't want "challenging" designs.

    The problem with these cars (which are in no way contemporary or traditional) is that they are designed for the fast growing Chinese market. In China people want cars that have arse cheeks as a grille and to them the XM probably looks like a 60s Italian sports car looks to us. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But maybe do what nearly every car company has been doing for decades and design a slightly different car (based on the same platform, engine etc) depending on regional tastes. For Europe a new front bumper would have probably done the trick as the rest of the M3 and M4 looks bearable!
    I am actually a BMW fanboy, my dream car is an e92 M3! But even I think that where the company is heading is not necessary the right direction.

    Marketing costs money. Lots of money. Far cheaper to make something look absolutely hideous. And the fact the X6 was the most eye gouging piece design did nothing to hinder sales. In fact, the whole coupe SUV segment has expanded across all manufacturers and shrunk to a god awful VW Tiago. Cos so many people are narcissistic.

    When I first saw the new EV mid level SUV, I joked that it looked like a Chinese knockoff of itself. Turns out it is built in China. They're banking on the blinkered BMW fanboys/girls to carry on leasing and PCPing these things regardless. Let's face it they seem quite happy to put up with the questionable reliability and build quality that has plagued the brand as well as the image which has gone from "premium sporty" to "double glazing sales rep".
