    I live in the U.S., and... i'm OLD af. So i remember very well, in the 70's, NO ONE around me taking the influx of Japanese cars as a serious threat to the legacy U.S. automakers. Some of that was an automatic rejection of anything new, some of it was not-at-all-disguised racism. History is set to repeat itself. again.

    I am a proud owner of a Polestar 2. I was under the impression that Polestar is just the EV division of Volvo. I.e. Swedish. I only recently come to be aware that Polestar is in fact 50% co-owned by Geely, a Chinese company. Talk about serendipity! Polestar is the sportier sister company to Volvo that was once the sporting tuner of Volvos (and still may be). The engineering is pretty much all Sweden for both but there is some platform sharing at Geely among brands. Polestar and Volvo both have plans to be all EV with Polestar being all-Ev starting with the Polestar 2. Polestar is now tuning cars in its British R&D division and doing some very interesting things with the upcoming Polestar 5, the production version of the Polestar Precept concept car. BYD will likely be the big winner, as they're the most vertically integrated company and have been making batteries for longer than Tesla has existed; they started out making batteries for your Grandad's Nokia, and they have the advantage of most people not knowing who they are, so they can come in and make a huge splash which they will likely do when the Han is released (because...well, just look at it). They're also launching in Australia in the next few months, and will be selling the Yuan from $35k (300km, 400km for $40k). This undercuts everyone, including the $45k MG ZS, and is nearly half the price of a Tesla Model 3 ($65k average on carsales/carsguide). In my opinion, the global supply chain of auto parts, including the essential components such as the EV battery packs is altering the manufacturing origin that the car brand itself couldn't recognize. The truth is all about value for money. Majority of EV buyers, particularly in the age group 25-35, being them Europeans, Asians or Americans are not car connoisseurs like their granddad. They just want a means of transport from point A to B, at low running cost and with a big Iphone built in to use and be entertained along the way. China is surely in pursuit for this new and high growth EV market, domestic and export simply with their own huge production of battery packs. Renewable Energy and Green Engineering is China national policy. Look at their solar power PV and energy storage device production and export volume. They mean business with big number investments in R&D. No more crap product like in the 70's. Both Japanese and Koreans experienced that at their early stage of learning curve. Aren't we all did?

Same goes for BMW, Audi, hell you look at a lot of big Swiss name brands when it comes to watches. Same exact same thing there. It's more about where a products designed than where it's built. Apple is the perfect example of this. Built in the same sweatshop as every other piece of tech, but the end result is VERRY different! To say somethings x because of where it is built completely ignoring where it was designed, where all the actual decisions were made is so telling .1% of the story.

There are views, debates with decisions to be made by consumers regarding electric over combustion engine, raw material sourcing ethics to construct EV batteries along with manufacturing and workforce nationalism or globalism with the auto industry, which fundamentally means the consumer needs to chose between ethics or price. Customers will mostly choose the Chinese option as the more German option even if built in China with equal quality will have a higher price tag. Take the ix from bmw, as mentioned, made in China and priced by the Germans starting at £61,000, a fully badged Chinese EV will have just as good quality and probably better range for around 50% of that price. I definitely wouldn’t blame anyone for choosing the Chinese option when European manufacturers are pushing that much profit in a vehicle, and I’d call myself a bit of a bmw fanboy being as I’ve 6 and on my 7th currently, but there is no way I’d choose badge over better value when it comes to an EV, you simply choose the side that gives value for money from a company that puts the tech and gadgets in the car without boosting the price for the pleasure.

    • @johndoh5182
      @johndoh5182 2 года назад +2

      There's a lot more he missed in regards to Tesla other than that. In fact, the model Y is about to be off his list because Giga Berlin will produce the model Y, the Fremont plant in CA produces the model Y and Giga Austin will produce the model Y. So, is will be a local vehicle wherever you live, except the UK since they aren't part of the EU. Also, Tesla is manufacturing their own 4680 batteries, for most their vehicles as they ramp up production. Each new plant for BEV also produces the 4680, so Berlin and Austin both, and Tesla is expanding 4680 production on their own in the US. They're going to use Panasonic to create a high charge capacity 4680 to compete with 1000KM vehicles coming out the end of this year or early next year.

    • @WEZ4136
      @WEZ4136 2 года назад

      From reports I’ve seen and heard Giga Texas will be the first to run the 4680 as the structural battery in the Y, that should make it 20% (ish) better range and around 13% better performance, that comes from a mix of the new cells and better efficiency. Tesla shares will be looking even better by the end of this year. 👍

    • @johndoh5182
      @johndoh5182 2 года назад +2

      @@WEZ4136 I'm pretty sure that whatever vehicle the 4680 goes into, it will be incorporated into a structural battery pack. It's designed to be part of one.
      But, it will probably be part of other devices too, such as grid storage or a powerwall. Just guessing since Tesla is contracting this out to different companies.
      I don't know about how it affects performance. I guess since the vehicle is lighter, yes, but then I would also think it best for Tesla not to use the same parts for that vehicle or it's over-engineered. If you're going to reduce the vehicle weight to me it makes sense to scale back the motor(s), drive shaft, suspension and whatever else you can to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. But without knowing the weight difference that the pack alone brings, it's hard to know if those other changes would matter much. The actual output is similar to the 2170 if you consider volume, in fact it's less (1 4680 has the volume of 5.5 2170s), but it holds a charge similar to 6 2170s and I assume part of that is not having a tab getting in the way.
      I really want to see a comparison of the two vehicles to know what Tesla did in going to this new battery/pack. I also want to see this new tech and listen to how it stacks up against other new battery tech, and then see what Panasonic can do with it since they're contracted to improve the power capacity (mAh) of it for a longer range car for Tesla to compete with the 1000KM vehicles coming out the end of the year or early next year.

    Legacy Auto were hesitant to transition to EV because sales for ICE vehicles was/is still profitable.
    China's young population wanted new tech vehicles and the government also wanted to reduce oil consumption. Where there is a will there is always a way.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 2 года назад +1

      I don't like this catch-all term "legacy autos." For instance, Volvo is very eager to transition to EV. And Volvo is aggressively trying to make their next-gen cars more sustainable (announcing to their customers leather is going away, for instance), selling their C40 Recharge only online, dissolving dealerships all-together in time and they're replacing all of their current cars with EVs. They wanted to do this for a long time but the market wasn't there yet. So, that's one so-called "legacy" auto maker that was not hesitant to transition.
      As far as ICE vehicles being profitable and selling, it only makes sense to sell what the market demands. Right now, in many markets, it's mostly ICE. As that changes, it's sensible and responsible then to adapt to those changes in a timely way. It's hard to tell now due to the pandemic and shortages so hopefully when things ease up we'll get a better sense.

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh 2 года назад

      In the UK at least, the ICE market has dropped at least 12% now, because that's how many new EV's are now being sold. Next year it'll no doubt be 20%+ of the new car market. The motor manufacturing industry are already beginning to adapt, but the oil industry will simply have to accept they've had their day, and those once huge mega-profits are slowly slipping away......

    Here in the US, the question about many of the Chinese brands is whether they will be allowed into the market. The Polestar and BMW are already being sold here. BYD has a US beachhead that sells electric buses and plans to sell cars in the future, with no announced date. None of the other Chinese companies have announced plans for US sales yet.
    Even if they are allowed in, whether buyers of EVs from China will be eligible for tax credits is another question. Currently each company that makes EVs, domestic or not, is allowed to sell 200,000 cars with the full credit; it starts to drop after that and eventually falls to zero. The only two companies that have reached that threshold so far are Tesla and GM.
    The little city cars cannot be registered for street use in most US states. A few allow them in for restricted use, but a car that can't be driven on highways won't have a lot of appeal here because many trips here require a highway drive, even within cities. So there are significant obstacles to bringing in those. And those cars are not quite as cheap as the usual reported price, which includes a subsidy from the Chinese government for domestic sales; if that MINI EV reaches the UK it's not going to sell for 3,000 pounds.
    All the Tesla cars sold here are made in the US. But some models now contain those CATL batteries, and CATL is building a US plant to supply Tesla with more of them. The CATL batteries are only used in the standard range models; long range models currently use NMC batteries from Panasonic. Tesla is planning to produce its own cells in a new larger size (4680) that do not contain cobalt, but will also be buying 4680 cells from Panasonic.
    Finally, those million mile batteries that Tesla has talked about? I think they're already here in the form of those new LFP models. LFP batteries are reported to be good for 4,000 or more charge cycles; with Tesla's thermal and charge management it will likely be considerably more. The LFP-based Tesla models have a range of about 250 miles. Sure looks like a million from here.

There are enormous vested interests in keeping car prices high in the EU to maintain the viability of legacy European manufacturers. If the UK allow the Citroen AMI to be sold in the UK there is no reason why the far superior city cars built in China for a similar price could not be offered to UK buyers who would be only too pleased to buy a brand new EV for the price of a five year old used Fiesta.
