  • This lecture explores, with the aid of a phenomenological rather than metaphysical understanding of religious experience, and the presentation of the bodily Resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel of John. The “spiritual senses” are presented in John’s Resurrection narrative as the condition of possibility of mystical participation by the Christian in the Resurrection of Jesus which is the heart of the distinctively Christian understanding of salvation. Seeing, hearing, tasting, touching the Risen Jesus constitutes the mystical participation of the believer in Jesus’ bodily Resurrection which is the foundation of the believer’s own Christian identity and hope of eternal life.
