    Underrated part of this: too many people on belay aren't paying complete attention to the climber. He kept his eyes locked and was ready the whole time. Amazing friend.

      True. Top shelf belaying there. But had the climber placed his pieces of protection gear correctly it would not have been such a close call. Being so low to the ground you always place pieces of gear in sets of two so this becomes very unlikely to happen. The climber is not properly trained for trad climbing, it seems.

But he doesn't have fall 20 feet to seriously injure himself, it could have caught him as intended, but he could still whip his head around at the same speed in to the side of the cliff face as he could in to the bottom

      No, that's what any experienced belayer would do. So, no "luck " is involved unless you're one of those who climbs above your rock knowledge level. Often seen when gym climbers don't bother to learn traditional techniques.
      And about the helmet comments - helmets are primarily for protection from rock fall coming from above. If you want something for head blows - put on a football or motorcycle helmet.

      The human brain works really, really fast in times of crisis. Its actually incredible. It surpassed even conscious thought. The fact that he immediately understood the exact issue and an immediate fix for it while implementing that solution in the span of under a second is a testament to that person reaction time, skill, and bond with their friends.

      He started jumping backward before the support snapped, which means he did not do that as a "fast reaction" to this event. So, no world class save here, it's just a really fortunate timing and a chance he was going for the backward jump (probably in a preventive manner).

      I have to chuckle at all the people commenting like Espen came up with his whole move in a split second. He perceived in a split second. He executed in a split second. It was the magnificent save that it was, I'd bet good money, because he did *not* come up with it in a split second.
      Back when Nikolai placed that protection, I'm guessing, is when Espen asked himself, "Now, what if it fails?" and started planning the move. He mentally rehearsed it. He asked when the danger would be greatest, and so he turned up his vigilance as the rope from Nikolai back to the anchor got as long as the anchor was high.
      Smart *and well prepared,* as you said.

      And he did his once job poorly. Moving backwards kept slack in the system, and does nothing to negate the fall distance. Look at where he ends up once the rope is tight.

      @@mrfancyshmancy So when the rope is at full tension, and neither are touching the ground, how does moving backwards magically make the rope shorter? In fact moving backwards prevented him from pulling more rope through his belay device, effectively shortening the rope. Moving forward, taking in slack through the device, and a hard catch (belay term)... the climber would have been the one a few feet in the air, not the belayer.

      Yea that’s why i don’t trust these rock climbing gyms where it’s some 90lb girl and she’s says she can balet me no problem. Sure in a static environment but there are several videos online now if a slip and the baleter is not quick enough or just doesn’t understand the mechanics outside of a classroom environment.       As someone who has done this before, I'll admit it is very impressive how fast he removed the slack in the rope. It becomes muscle memory since it is the same movement over and over, but he still did it very fast, if he failed to remove enough slack his hand would been caught into the mechanism with the entire weight of the falling guy so that would have probably destroyed his hand 😅

      @@VerticalEd Ever belayed before? after an EQUIPMENT malfunction the climber is lucky that the belayer had the fast reflexes to do something that not many people would have the knowledge about to understand the geometry of what he's doing. Most Belayers would likely have just stood and watched, or just stepped back and pulled. None would have the amazing reflexes to step back; and jump into the rock to take more slack. Truly uneducated judgmental people are my biggest pet peeve. If you want to be judgmental understand what you're watching lmao.

      Climber wouldn't have died if he hit the deck. Probably would have broken something but he might even walk it off. 15 ft falls aren't usually fatal. Great catch tho and yeah, climber placed bad protection.

    This is just quick critical thinking more so than it being his friend. The climber is very fortunate he has someone spotting him that doesn’t panic in the moment. Absolutely a great thing to witness on how to handle pressure.

      The belayer wasn’t thinking critically, he just did the normal lead belay technique as trained and certified. He did it quickly and impeccably, though, which is why his friend survived. A beautiful soft catch with high stakes!

    Adrenaline makes everything slow down. He used that and managed to make a quick reaction before his friend plummeted to his death and smashed on the rocks. A real hero

      It doesn't slow down time perception. It only speeds up reaction time by increasing your awareness of your surroundings and increase blood flow to muscles. It also causes you to act more reflexively, like you do when you catch something.

      @maishiro244 No, there have been studies done on this. People don't perceive time any differently, they're just able to move more quickly without needing to consciously think about it, and in retrospect the event seemed to occur more slowly simply because they remember more details and took more mental snapshots as a result of that extra awareness.
