Lightning comes from both the sky and from the ground, it branches out from the sky like a huge fractal pattern, while from the ground it stays mostly straight, curving up slightly to meet up with the cloud lightning. (this is mostly from tall places, you barely see it from ground level) Once the two charges connect it goes pretty much exactly like those lightning shapes you make, however they grow extremely thick, and any other lightning strands redirect into that one bolt, disappearing.
Fun fact the actual arc of lightning (the part that you see) travels from the ground up. It is always connected (if it weren't there would be no arc) but what we perceive as a single arc is actually instantaneous flashes of thousands of arcs which is what creates the illusion of it crackling and twisting in the air. Animation doesn't have to perfectly copy life but when I animate lightning this way it looks pretty good 👍🏽
You should do a wave! It would be really cool to see each element from a new aspect, such as earth becoming an asteroid crash or fire becoming a flamethrower!
I love watching your videos! They’re so down to earth and, for lack of a better word, simple (but in a good way!). These are so much better than most mainstream content! Keep doing what you do and know we all love your content!
Not sure why this is in my recommended but these look very cool, getting an anime vibe from this. The inverse effects especially really make the whole scene pop and the lightning sparks sort of burned into your eyes. I might steal that for lightning effects in a game haha.
funnily enough lightning doesn't solely start from the top there is a tiny one approaching from the bottom too they meet above the "impact" zone and the whole thing lights up
i like how in the 10 hour version, the lighning hitting the water sort of crawls forward from the backround with some strikes beforehand in fast succession

The cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning is definately the most commonly drawn type, but there's also cloud-to-cloud and intracloud lightning which happens between/within clouds and is the one that is more common irl. Could be good to do a quick study on how stepped leaders work to make it look even more realistic!
I love the ten hour one I think it would be really cool if you added lights to the window of the house so when the lightning strikes the light in the house flicker a little then turn back on
You should have made the 10hrs a person looking out of a window in a house, you should have added rain, and water running down the window the person is looking out of, as the lightning stop happens outside.
