The Tabernacle Choir performs "O Divine Redeemer" by Charles Gounod with lyrics by Alfred Phillips.
Episode 4348. Aired January 13, 2013
Much respect to my junior high school music teacher/choir director, who had complete faith and confidence to believe that we could learn this difficult piece. Our choir of black students from inner city Louisville, Kentucky won second place in the state that year. Thank you Ms. Genevive Churchill for giving us confidence (and a love of music) that has lasted a lifetime.
❤
Much respect is right! Jr High singing this for contest would NOT be an easy task. And the fact that she used such a religious piece is remarkable. Truly a fantastic teach for sure!
❤
I’m here post-COVID and the world is truly falling apart. We’re all divided. Men’s hearts are failing them. Wars and rumors of wars abound. Pride, deception, destruction covers the earth. Please Jesus, hasten thy return. We need Thee.
"To live is to suffer. To survive is to find meaning in the suffering."- Mans search for meaning. My savior is my meaning....he gets me through my suffering. i love him with all my soul. Beautiful song.
couldnothave expressed it any better
So very poignant
This is the Lord's Choir and Orchestra. He is happy to share this lovely music with us and does so any time we ask. We are blessed!

I am so thankful and grateful to the Mormon Tabernacle choir for their comforting and soothing singing which has picked me up many a times when my soul was so cast down and felt completely hopeless and could find no repose or comfort anywhere.
I can hardly listen to this without weeping!
❤ Always hit the heart! Beauty song.
Me too! Tears for His suffering mixed with Joy for His Atonement 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I LOVE our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ❤❤
This is a very beautiful song, the story behind this song is also a very sad story, I listened to this song when my heart is saddened and worry about my children, I love the Lord with all my heart and know He listens to us when we pray to Him!
The most perfect example I know of the song of the heart being a prayer unto God. I love my Savior.
Yes, very well said. 💕
✨✨✨
This is one of the most humbling tributes to the Jesus Christ our Redeemer. I wished I could buy into the Mormon thing but I just can't.
The reason you "can't buy into the Mormon thing" is that you have been fed a lot of garbage. If you are sincere about your wish, all you need to do to find the truth is obtain a copy of the Book of Mormon and read a few chapters everyday until you have read it all. Before you read each day, say a little prayer to "Our Father who art in Heaven" asking him to open your heart and mind and fill you with light , knowledge and understanding and provide you with a witness of the book's truthfulness. The book comes with a guarantee from God himself that if you will do this "with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Spirit." I have done this numerous times over my lifetime, and every time, God blesses me with more light, more understanding, and more faith that Jesus Christ actually did bring about the "restitution of all things spoken of by the mouths of all the holy prophets since the world began." Acts 3:19-21. The Jews at the time of Christ were in fact, part of God's "chosen people," they had the old Testament, they believed that the Messiah, a Jew, would one day come, but when he actually came, the vast majority of them rejected him because they were so welded to their false notions and man-made traditions that they rejected him in spite of the overwhelming evidences He provided that he truly was the Messiah. Had you been a devote Jew when Christ came to the earth, whose side would you have been on? God the Father, his son Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, Peter, James, John, Elijah, Moses, and Elias and numerous other angelic persons have returned to the earth to bring about "the restitution of all things." Does that mean there are a lot of things restored that are not in the Bible? Of course it does. If everything that was needed was in the bible (a claim the bible does not make) then there would be no need for a "restitution of all things." Is this concept found in Acts 3:19-21 new? No! It's been prophesied "by all the holy prophets since the world began." What else do these three verses teach us? Christ will not return until there has been a "restitution of all things." May God bless you in your search for truth. He, more than any of us mortals, wants you to know the truth, wants you to know that He has restored the "fullness of the gospel," his holy priesthood (the power and authority to act for God), the holy apostleship, true prophets, and Christ's true church, built on a foundation of apostles and prophets called by God himself.
Study it out and pray and find out. I sense many felt the same when the Lord was on the Earth preaching his Gospel. These words have always rung true to me - “only if you are unafraid of truth can you find it”. Call the missionaries and study and pray. You will find many things you have heard and have been taught about The church of Jesus Christ have been untrue. It is true. The true Church of God has been restored in these very latter days.
I was blessed to be able to sing this with a Regional Church Choir in California more than 30 years ago. There were 300 people singing in this choir, we had an orchestra and we traveled to the different areas to sing. We did sound like the Tabernacle Choir. Max Fisher was our Choir Director. It was wonderful. 💕
So I'm sitting here paying some bills and listening to this, and I just can't help from commenting on how beautiful this song is. The older I get the more I appreciate and admire the magnificent Savior of us all, Jesus Christ. Truly, HE is "mighty to save". The Mormon Tabernacle Choir does a fantastic job of helping listeners to feel His holy Spirit. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
My great grandfather was best friends and composed music with Charles Gounod. That is why my late-father and I have his last name as our middle name.
You are blessed for that !
This choir has always been a source of inspiration, encouragement and comfort to me. I miss the time when they were accompanied by an organist. It feels like the orchestra drowns out choir. I can no longer feel the peaceful feelings I had before.it’s like trying to have a conversation with someone who has their radio turned up full blast.
A stunningly beautiful song sung by a marvelous choir. Thank you, thank you!
This wonderful hymn makes one feel in the presence of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. So beautifully performed by the choir of His true Church.
Amen to your words.
Thank you President Monson for this song sung at your funeral;
Whatever the pain, it will be healed and redeemed.
Whatever the joy, it’s just a mere hint of what is to come.
Well Said.....
No matter how serious the trial, how deep the distress, how great the affliction, God will never desert us. He never has, and He never will. He cannot do it. It is not His character to do so.… He will always stand by us. We may pass through the fiery furnace; we may pass through deep waters; but we shall not be consumed nor overwhelmed. We shall emerge from all these trials and difficulties the better and purer for them. - George Q. Cannon
I feel like I'm in Heaven when I listen to this hymn it's such a beautiful song.It comforts n in tune me with the Holy Spirit.I love the Tabernacle Choir thank you for these wonderful singing and as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of LDS,i am so ever thankful to our Heavenly Father for this restored gospel for all his children to be safe.I know God lives and his Son Jesus Christ lives and they restored this true gospel through his prophet Joseph Smith.Love and cherish it until the end.xxx
It's true what you said. Keep listening but I do not get tired., Before I start listening to any song I start with this song.
Every time I watch and listen to the words of this Heartfelt Hymn it pierces my heart and soul I feel the spirit so strong thank you Lord for my Talented Brothers n Sisters,The Tabernacle choir Angels 💯🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰
Dear Lord, turn me not away….receive me, though unworthy.
This very special masterpiece had to be God inspired. Man by himself could never capture the impact . Read the story of the composer when he wrote his shortly before is death. "Hear my cry, hear my cry, Save me, Lord in thy mercy". We live in a fast world where we ignore the wonder of our relationship with God. Think how wonderful it would be to be that God centered to write such inspired works.
Thanks Dave for your words...
Dave Danzeisen - Dave, everything good comes from god. how could it not be? god is the ultimate artist, song writer, psychologist, sociologist, he is the ultimate everything, an ologist, if you like! if you paint a mona lisa or write a classic hymnal, where do you get it from? it began as a germ in your head till you picked up something physical like a pen and paper to record your thoughts. you see, it all began in your skull!! well, in your mind!! even people who design the likes of the taj mahal or whatever. it all began in their mind which is linked up to the Great Mind in the sky ... catholics would call it theholy spirit, native americans would call it the great spirit, the great chief, all spiritual names for our one and only creator. so, you see, nothing physical can exist without it beginning in the mind or spirit. all this beauty comes from our creator. all our evil inthe world today comes from old nick, old beelzebub, satan, whatever! peace and peace treaties begin in heaven and travel to earth through someone's mind. war, on the other hand, begins with satan and travels to those who are linked in to him. we have to be careful who we let influence us. god wins the peace but satan seems to win every war. thoughts, like spells, travel.good god, just imagine, dave, this letter began when i saw YOUR letter on you tube. thanks for starting a ball rolling. i am a lapsed catholic, or maybe a luke warm one, or maybe a disillusioned one. but i am not disillusioned with t he creator. i may have a problem or two with the messenger but i have no problem w hatsoever with the message itself. am i going on too much? thanks for reading this far. maybe the two of us should become vicars or popes or rabbis or whatever!! oh, god!
***** I agree with you, you expressed good thoughts. I would recommend that you go to www.mormon.org and find out about what we believe in God and even the messenger. You may like what you find.
I think Mac Wilberg is one of the greats, and the church is so lucky to claim him as a member in these latter days!
Clean Getaway Car Wash & Detail Ctr I think you got it you said that very well I don't think anybody could have said it better bless you
So beautifully sung, Thank you dear God
I used to sing the solo version of this, as did my mother before me. I have lost my singing voice to vocal tremor, as did she (in her early 50s; I was 63 at the onset of tremor). It's lovely to listen to this again. My mother had such a beautiful voice. She was truly a contralto, with a high range; I was a mezzo.
Yes I believe ,with blessed hope for my family and friends I listen to this song .I am grateful
It matters not what part of the year I hear this
Thank you for that. I needed this song today.
I have been listening to the song too without tiring myself from 10h00pm, so beautiful and my heart is softened by the words that keeps on enchor in my ears. Lovely.
I share this most beautiful hymn with all of those "friends" on Facebook who have so unjustly offended me with their political diatribe, their own slurs, and their own bigotry. Sad but true, so I dedicate this gorgeous music in the hopes that it will cleanse your souls as well as heal mine.
My dearest, don't let troubled people disturb your faith, in fact ignore their bad comments and follow your beautiful heart. Ignore but it good you have been sharing this beautiful music but you don't need to prove to anybody accept to our our heavenly father.
Am here writing to you as one of the believers in Christ and those are christian don't condemn others but emprise each other
I love this song very much and it has been my prayer each night I get a chance to sing the song as I pray.
It is music like this that sustains the little faith I have.
Truly, this is the song of the soul seeking after the peace that our Lord's Atonement brings. I have needed the Divine Redeemer in my life and I am grateful for His love and mercy.
Words and Music by Charles Gounod
Ah, turn me not away, receive me though unworthy.
Ah, turn me not away, receive me though unworthy.
Hear Thou my cry, hear Thou my cry,
Behold, Lord, my distress!
Answer me from Thy throne,
Haste Thee, Lord, to mine aid!
first stanza
Truly Inspired ❤🙏🏼
A true feeling of healing oil on my wounds. Thank you
Such beautiful, beautiful music! Thank you very much! Best Wishes from rural Mississippi!
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I sing this wonderful song myself in my choir here in Germany. Whenever I sing it or whenever I listen to it here I think of this very young girl whom I've never met, but from whom I know that she has had a cruel accident two years ago. She is still suffering from this accident and I never know whether she is still alive when I try to talk to her on the internet the next day.
So I know what I mean when I'm singing "Hear my cry! Come and save me, oh Lord"
It goes deep into the soul when all that is left is a string of faith; holding on, we are waiting for the Savior's mercy to rescue us from our deepest anguish in which we never imagined we would feel during our sojourn on this earth. As the last deepest plea of desperation to our Lord, we have to pull from his perfect strength, giving us a small light from his love to go on when nothing makes sense and everything seems unfair.
The Divine Redeemer is the perfect title of him who has suffered that we might overcome.
For some of us whom lives have fallen down a cliff they give you hope and focus with their music.
One of my favourites;I truly feel the spirit so strongly when I have the pleasure of listening to the Choir at Temple Square sing this song in particular.Thank You.
This is so much food for my Soul. I cannot imagine a world without the Testimony that comes shining through each word of each song the Tabernacle Choir sings. Very grateful. " O Divine Redeemer! ... and remember not, remember not...
Hear my cry O Lord .....turn me not away.......so very beautiful!
This is s real masterpiece performed by the choir.
Profoundly inspired by God and so wonderfully performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Today is a nice Saturday afternoon and not better moment to listen an amazing song like this one. Thanks for posting this video.

Such a beautiful song about the Savior's Atonement
I love you Jesus
Ok, Ok, you win. The MTC performed this piece AWESOMELY!
Shameful that posts are ignored.... Please be reminded that this great classical piece was written by Gounod in the 1800s and is a beautiful expression of the love for our Divine Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Beautifully performed with typical excellence of this choir.
This music brings the Spirit of God right into my soul ! Thank you!
Such a perfect rendering of this most moving hymn. Truly inspirational in these dark, latter days.
I first was introduced to this classic piece while on my mission 30 years ago and I was quite moved by it. The words and melody still cause me to exclaim how merciful our God is and I feel such reverence for the Almighty! 💜✝️💜
Beautiful! So grateful for all the Savior has done for all people forever!

The played this at his funeral in the tabernacle, I was lucky enough to be there. It sounded amazing.
A beautiful hymn of praise unto my dear eternal Heavenly Father
This is so awesome because I want to say a prayer like this, but I can't do it this beautifully and powerfully.
love love love this song played it for our ward conference. The musical notes, melody, and lyrics so inspiring and heart warming.
They are extremely good as I mentioned I listened to them when father was alive.

I LOVE THIS SONG;
I shiver with joy! Everytime I hear them! Definitely the Lord's Choir!
So beautiful !!
There are actually a few audition requirements. In order to apply for the chorale, you must meet the following criteria:
Be between 25 and 55 years of age, live within a 100-mile radius of Temple Square, be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in good standing.
Even if don't meet these criteria we invite you to join us for a rehearsal or concert anytime.
Thank you for saving me from my own (sometimes) complete anxiety. Thank you for this, I will share it with the investigators of our missionaries--to set the stage for the holy Spirit to be present when we teach them the gospel
Mormon Tabernacle Choir I
It also helps to have some musical training
This is one of my favorites that they do, always beautiful, as well as the curly haired blond girl at the 4:23 close up. georgeous.
Most beautiful.
Me encanta este himno, es grandioso. No me canso de escucharlo.
So beautiful. Sounds like classical music. I love it!
It is classical music, Charles Gounod is a classical composer
Sometimes we think everyone already knows of a special connection that magnifies this choir, the Savior has his hand in this, while at the same time I concur with you and appreciate what you are saying.
Perfect Song!!
This piece is special to me. Two of the current members of the Choir introduced me to this about 30-32 years ago, when both served a mission in The Netherlands. Colleen Barnes Butler and Craig Butler.
Just beautiful!
O holy night
Deeply moving!
I will enjoy the songs so beautiful and touching, this is heaven on earth.thank you tabernacle choir
One of my all-time favorites and a piece I have played many times!
Beautiful,it really touched my heart.
Just perfect and beautiful. Thank you!!!!!
heavenly angels listen to this....
This hymn always reminds me of my father and mother who used to sing this as a duet in church. I have sung it in ward choirs a number of times and it is certainly one of my favorites.
1st - I LOVE this beautiful piece of musical scripture. Praise be to God for His Only Begotten Son, Jesus the Christ!
2nd - Regretably, the link above does not take you to the same version as this piece. The version on this page has an organ introduction while the LINK takes you to a different version that uses a cello in the introduction.
Cheers!
Beautiful
"O Divine Redeemer" mi no save olsem wanem blong talem...i naes bitim evri samting we i naes... i gud Tumas..i fulumap sol blong mi wetem respek mo glad...
One of Elder Neal A Maxwells favourite pieces, I can understand why.
So Stirring and Beautiful......
Words of Truth and Comfort....
Prayerfully beautiful...awesome
Maravilloso, the best! My Lord.
Beyond words…..
This song - always one of my favorites - reminds me of a scene in the KBYU production of "Handel's Messiah". If you're not into musical history, the first part of production is a bit long and maybe drags a bit - but it's necessary to lay the groundwork for the climax at the end. The scene in mind depicts debtors being released from prison one by one by a generous donor paying off each person's account - about as close a simile as one can devise to the Messiah's role. That scene alone - with strains of Handel's oratorio in the background - was worth watching the entire video.
One of the very best docudramas ever!!! We watch it again and again!
The most subdued version of this penitential prayer I have heard and all the more wondrous for it. Gorgeous intonation (The only complaint I have is the audio engineers is the removal of sibilants/consonants from the singers - yes I know it is a BIG group). A gorgeous performance. Ideal for Lent and Easter.
Hermoso inspirador conmovedor
'É maravilhoso é muita espiritualidade! !
