Much respect to my junior high school music teacher/choir director, who had complete faith and confidence to believe that we could learn this difficult piece. Our choir of black students from inner city Louisville, Kentucky won second place in the state that year. Thank you Ms. Genevive Churchill for giving us confidence (and a love of music) that has lasted a lifetime.
Much respect is right! Jr High singing this for contest would NOT be an easy task. And the fact that she used such a religious piece is remarkable. Truly a fantastic teach for sure!
I’m here post-COVID and the world is truly falling apart. We’re all divided. Men’s hearts are failing them. Wars and rumors of wars abound. Pride, deception, destruction covers the earth. Please Jesus, hasten thy return. We need Thee.
"To live is to suffer. To survive is to find meaning in the suffering."- Mans search for meaning. My savior is my meaning....he gets me through my suffering. i love him with all my soul. Beautiful song.
So I'm sitting here paying some bills and listening to this, and I just can't help from commenting on how beautiful this song is. The older I get the more I appreciate and admire the magnificent Savior of us all, Jesus Christ. Truly, HE is "mighty to save". The Mormon Tabernacle Choir does a fantastic job of helping listeners to feel His holy Spirit. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This is a very beautiful song, the story behind this song is also a very sad story, I listened to this song when my heart is saddened and worry about my children, I love the Lord with all my heart and know He listens to us when we pray to Him!
I was blessed to be able to sing this with a Regional Church Choir in California more than 30 years ago. There were 300 people singing in this choir, we had an orchestra and we traveled to the different areas to sing. We did sound like the Tabernacle Choir. Max Fisher was our Choir Director. It was wonderful. 💕
This choir has always been a source of inspiration, encouragement and comfort to me. I miss the time when they were accompanied by an organist. It feels like the orchestra drowns out choir. I can no longer feel the peaceful feelings I had before.it’s like trying to have a conversation with someone who has their radio turned up full blast.
I used to sing the solo version of this, as did my mother before me. I have lost my singing voice to vocal tremor, as did she (in her early 50s; I was 63 at the onset of tremor). It's lovely to listen to this again. My mother had such a beautiful voice. She was truly a contralto, with a high range; I was a mezzo.
Truly, this is the song of the soul seeking after the peace that our Lord's Atonement brings. I have needed the Divine Redeemer in my life and I am grateful for His love and mercy.
I sing this wonderful song myself in my choir here in Germany. Whenever I sing it or whenever I listen to it here I think of this very young girl whom I've never met, but from whom I know that she has had a cruel accident two years ago. She is still suffering from this accident and I never know whether she is still alive when I try to talk to her on the internet the next day. So I know what I mean when I'm singing "Hear my cry! Come and save me, oh Lord"
This is s real masterpiece performed by the choir. Profoundly inspired by God and so wonderfully performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Today is a nice Saturday afternoon and not better moment to listen an amazing song like this one. Thanks for posting this video.
The reason you "can't buy into the Mormon thing" is that you have been fed a lot of garbage. If you are sincere about your wish, all you need to do to find the truth is obtain a copy of the Book of Mormon and read a few chapters everyday until you have read it all. Before you read each day, say a little prayer to "Our Father who art in Heaven" asking him to open your heart and mind and fill you with light , knowledge and understanding and provide you with a witness of the book's truthfulness. The book comes with a guarantee from God himself that if you will do this "with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Spirit." I have done this numerous times over my lifetime, and every time, God blesses me with more light, more understanding, and more faith that Jesus Christ actually did bring about the "restitution of all things spoken of by the mouths of all the holy prophets since the world began." Acts 3:19-21. The Jews at the time of Christ were in fact, part of God's "chosen people," they had the old Testament, they believed that the Messiah, a Jew, would one day come, but when he actually came, the vast majority of them rejected him because they were so welded to their false notions and man-made traditions that they rejected him in spite of the overwhelming evidences He provided that he truly was the Messiah. Had you been a devote Jew when Christ came to the earth, whose side would you have been on? God the Father, his son Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, Peter, James, John, Elijah, Moses, and Elias and numerous other angelic persons have returned to the earth to bring about "the restitution of all things." Does that mean there are a lot of things restored that are not in the Bible? Of course it does. If everything that was needed was in the bible (a claim the bible does not make) then there would be no need for a "restitution of all things." Is this concept found in Acts 3:19-21 new? No! It's been prophesied "by all the holy prophets since the world began." What else do these three verses teach us? Christ will not return until there has been a "restitution of all things." May God bless you in your search for truth. He, more than any of us mortals, wants you to know the truth, wants you to know that He has restored the "fullness of the gospel," his holy priesthood (the power and authority to act for God), the holy apostleship, true prophets, and Christ's true church, built on a foundation of apostles and prophets called by God himself.
I share this most beautiful hymn with all of those "friends" on Facebook who have so unjustly offended me with their political diatribe, their own slurs, and their own bigotry. Sad but true, so I dedicate this gorgeous music in the hopes that it will cleanse your souls as well as heal mine.
My dearest, don't let troubled people disturb your faith, in fact ignore their bad comments and follow your beautiful heart. Ignore but it good you have been sharing this beautiful music but you don't need to prove to anybody accept to our our heavenly father. Am here writing to you as one of the believers in Christ and those are christian don't condemn others but emprise each other I love this song very much and it has been my prayer each night I get a chance to sing the song as I pray.
Every time I watch and listen to the words of this Heartfelt Hymn it pierces my heart and soul I feel the spirit so strong thank you Lord for my Talented Brothers n Sisters,The Tabernacle choir Angels 💯🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰
One of my favourites;I truly feel the spirit so strongly when I have the pleasure of listening to the Choir at Temple Square sing this song in particular.Thank You.
This is so much food for my Soul. I cannot imagine a world without the Testimony that comes shining through each word of each song the Tabernacle Choir sings. Very grateful. " O Divine Redeemer! ... and remember not, remember not...
This very special masterpiece had to be God inspired. Man by himself could never capture the impact . Read the story of the composer when he wrote his shortly before is death. "Hear my cry, hear my cry, Save me, Lord in thy mercy". We live in a fast world where we ignore the wonder of our relationship with God. Think how wonderful it would be to be that God centered to write such inspired works.
Dave Danzeisen - Dave, everything good comes from god. how could it not be? god is the ultimate artist, song writer, psychologist, sociologist, he is the ultimate everything, an ologist, if you like! if you paint a mona lisa or write a classic hymnal, where do you get it from? it began as a germ in your head till you picked up something physical like a pen and paper to record your thoughts. you see, it all began in your skull!! well, in your mind!! even people who design the likes of the taj mahal or whatever. it all began in their mind which is linked up to the Great Mind in the sky ... catholics would call it theholy spirit, native americans would call it the great spirit, the great chief, all spiritual names for our one and only creator. so, you see, nothing physical can exist without it beginning in the mind or spirit. all this beauty comes from our creator. all our evil inthe world today comes from old nick, old beelzebub, satan, whatever! peace and peace treaties begin in heaven and travel to earth through someone's mind. war, on the other hand, begins with satan and travels to those who are linked in to him. we have to be careful who we let influence us. god wins the peace but satan seems to win every war. thoughts, like spells, travel.good god, just imagine, dave, this letter began when i saw YOUR letter on you tube. thanks for starting a ball rolling. i am a lapsed catholic, or maybe a luke warm one, or maybe a disillusioned one. but i am not disillusioned with t he creator. i may have a problem or two with the messenger but i have no problem w hatsoever with the message itself. am i going on too much? thanks for reading this far. maybe the two of us should become vicars or popes or rabbis or whatever!! oh, god!
***** I agree with you, you expressed good thoughts. I would recommend that you go to www.mormon.org and find out about what we believe in God and even the messenger. You may like what you find.
It goes deep into the soul when all that is left is a string of faith; holding on, we are waiting for the Savior's mercy to rescue us from our deepest anguish in which we never imagined we would feel during our sojourn on this earth. As the last deepest plea of desperation to our Lord, we have to pull from his perfect strength, giving us a small light from his love to go on when nothing makes sense and everything seems unfair.
I first was introduced to this classic piece while on my mission 30 years ago and I was quite moved by it. The words and melody still cause me to exclaim how merciful our God is and I feel such reverence for the Almighty! 💜✝️💜
No matter how serious the trial, how deep the distress, how great the affliction, God will never desert us. He never has, and He never will. He cannot do it. It is not His character to do so.… He will always stand by us. We may pass through the fiery furnace; we may pass through deep waters; but we shall not be consumed nor overwhelmed. We shall emerge from all these trials and difficulties the better and purer for them. - George Q. Cannon

If you're not into musical history, the first part of production is a bit long and maybe drags a bit - but it's necessary to lay the groundwork for the climax at the end. The scene in mind depicts debtors being released from prison one by one by a generous donor paying off each person's account - about as close a simile as one can devise to the Messiah's role. That scene alone - with strains of Handel's oratorio in the background - was worth watching the entire video.
The most subdued version of this penitential prayer I have heard and all the more wondrous for it. Thank you President Monson for this song sung at your funeral;
I can hardly listen to this without weeping!
❤ Always hit the heart! Beauty song.
Me too! Tears for His suffering mixed with Joy for His Atonement 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I LOVE our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ❤❤
My great grandfather was best friends and composed music with Charles Gounod. That is why my late-father and I have his last name as our middle name.
You are blessed for that !
A stunningly beautiful song sung by a marvelous choir. Thank you, thank you!

I LOVE THIS SONG;
This hymn always reminds me of my father and mother who used to sing this as a duet in church. I have sung it in ward choirs a number of times and it is certainly one of my favorites.
This piece is special to me. Two of the current members of the Choir introduced me to this about 30-32 years ago, when both served a mission in The Netherlands. Colleen Barnes Butler and Craig Butler.

One of Elder Neal A Maxwells favourite pieces, I can understand why.
So beautiful. Sounds like classical music. I love it!
It is classical music, Charles Gounod is a classical composer
heavenly angels listen to this....
Shameful that posts are ignored.... Please be reminded that this great classical piece was written by Gounod in the 1800s and is a beautiful expression of the love for our Divine Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Beautifully performed with typical excellence of this choir.

This song - always one of my favorites - reminds me of a scene in the KBYU production of "Handel's Messiah".
One of the very best docudramas ever!!! We watch it again and again!
Just beautiful!
O holy night
The most subdued version of this penitential prayer I have heard and all the more wondrous for it. Gorgeous intonation (The only complaint I have is the audio engineers is the removal of sibilants/consonants from the singers - yes I know it is a BIG group). A gorgeous performance. Ideal for Lent and Easter.
Prayerfully beautiful...awesome
