I remember I was breaking down boxes with a fixed blade. It, too, had a choil. It always got snagged up and stalled, just like in this video, and it was just one extra thing to have to consider on a would-be simple tool. Ever since then, I knew choils weren't for me in almost any context. Even the smallest of choils can stall an entire blade. Great video.
Very well spoken and as you can tell by some of the comments on here this upsets people. Yes it makes it a tiny bit harder to sharpen but do you want a high performance defensive blade or do you want a easy to sharpen knife that does not defend you very well.. Life is hard you just have to pick what serves you the best.. Thanks for the best comment of this video !
@@ghozt9119 Never say never. Weird how you think your hand would slide down... Maybe you should work on your grip 😉 We've stabbed through the top of pig skulls which are 3 times thicker than a human skull. So there shouldnt be any issue if that is what you wanted to do... -MDv
Great video Mike! What’s your thoughts on with a reg blade when stabby stabby performing a C cut then twisting the blade out? In other words just creating a larger wound channel to remove the blade. Same can be done with the MDV folder of course with eliminating the choil and still creating a larger wound channel But, even with blades with a choil, the c cut still creates a larger wound channel to remove a stuck blade. Granted taking away the chance of not doing a c cut if stabbing in between bones etc
That’s a great question. I’ll probably have to make a more detailed video on this. But the short answer is creating a C cut will only increase the chance of a blade being caught on flesh, or more importantly material. That’s because a blade that is inserted and pulled back through the original wound channel has a hole that fits the blade width already. Think of it like inserting an old school skeleton key into the wound, twisting it, and then trying to pull it out. Since it’s going to be pulled in a somewhat sideways position, it’s almost guaranteed to catch. The C cut creates a giant wound channel but it’s mostly internally when the action is done while buried into the body. As it’s close to winter time, this will be even worse as layers are increased on top of the body. A jacket will definitely cause a catching action. I don’t know if that makes sense. I might have to demo this on video. It’s hard to do so without getting in trouble with RUclips! I am very happy so many comments and questions come up about the C cut. Means the information is getting out there!
I will add that a c cut or twisting action definitely makes pulling it out of bone easier. That is one of the good things about the hook. But the lack of choil doesn’t help with it being imbedded in bone.
@@sliceymikeshoukd add also creating a C cut requires more torque. Especially inside a body cavity. But a c cut (in my logic) creates that larger wound channel and less likely for the “attacker” to seek help from bleeding out in time. Be curious to see you demo this. I’ve tried it on medium soft targets it works but as far as extra layers. No. As well as a target that doesn’t sit still which humans tend not to do when introducing steel inside them 😂 Unless of course you catch em off guard which we’ve seen in surveillance videos
@@a661992 you’re correct on all accounts. A good executed C cut will add more opportunities to create a wound channel that overrides the chance of it catching. But I guess that’s my point, if you had a blade that eliminates that chance as much as possible, any good technique will be enhanced.
If anybody comes back and remakes like the pig sticker or the hunting knife that choil could be an interesting feature because that was one of the things the old-timers were talking about, how you would need a blade to stick into the animal if you were bare handed doing some kind of survival Ambush hunt. I really like this presentation I'll keep it in mind anytime that I'm Flint knapping or making my own blades for personal use. Obviously I'm not going to you know.... do anything like sell a design it's probably patented but most of all because I'm not a d*ck. I really like that you brought this system up. It also made me appreciate Karambit or curved blades a little more. In fact now that you brought that up it reminds me that I've seen OTF knives with little choil features.
On your 2025 model when you redo the mdv can you run a aggressive bevel going on to the top of the handle that way you're able to get like the extra 4 inches of penetration needed to reach vitals. Might also consider selling the mdv with something like one of those ceramic bracelets and then you can showcase the Libre knife fighting rubber band lock.
Appreciate the recommendations. We don’t have any relations with the Libre team. And there are a lot of things push that may or may not be useful. We don’t attach ourselves to things like that for multiple reasons. -MDV
I think the type of choil makes more of a difference than having one or not. A very tiny one like on the Toor Mutant isn't likely to catch at all. Or a very angled ones like on the Spartan Harsey Difensa that is angled and smooth instead of being flat so anything slides off instead of getting caught. I really do that it has a guard though. Both to keep the hand from sliding forward if you stab into something hard (some nerve damage to my finger after somehow not slicing it open to the bone makes me really appreciate this), and to help keep you from ramming your finger or thumb into something hard on your opponent. Buckle, mag, zipper pull, even a large button can cause you to "jam" your thumb, or worse, if it's a corner of a mag or metal buckle, slice you open. Not good if you now have his blood entering your wound.
True. As stated in the video, there are many ways around this issue. The point of the video is to bring awareness to a common feature most don’t even know exist, which many have stated in the comments and in private message. The fact that any choil is present creates a chance. How much of a chance is dependent on design. There are many well thought out designs. And you can find great blades that fit your self defense needs if you are knowledgeable enough to know what to look for. Unfortunately many will purchase a knife with a choil that has a decent chance of catching out of sheer ignorance. Sometimes the videos we plan out and release provide new information, sometimes it’s a different view, and others there’s little added value. 🤷♂️ we do appreciate you watching video and providing feedback.
True. And that’s one of things I listed on how some designers get around this. Having a small choil limits the chances it will catch. But having one still leaves a chance. Even serrations will catch on heavy jackets and material. My hope with this video is to shed light on the potential of it happening. Most have no idea what that feature is. Like with most things, knowledge and awareness go a long way in making sure you’re not caught off guard. I appreciate the comment and for your time. -MDv

@@kevinfogle7929 That is why this folder was designed to come out open among other elements. Your point is valid right up until you have to be somewhere that you cant carry a firearm or fixed blade.. then this is the next best option. Thanks !

Most stabbings happen with kitchen knives. Knives kinda are overrated as a self defense tool. It's an offensive tool if anything the best attack is gonna be going at someone without them knowing. A real stealthy attack or possibly scare someone away as a defense. But I wouldn't count on that. A gun is a much better option. For non lethal if you wanna be realistic even a hammer is better.
I’m going to carry a hammer with built in kitchen knife now! Because you know every state or everywhere in the world allows you to carry a firearm! But who needs that..
