If you are serious about your safety, carry one. Get some level of instruction. I taught knife fighting during my 28yr Army career. I am 65 now. Yes, you get old if you live long enough. That presents its own set of special problems. You bet, I carry a knife and a handgun...all the time. This man's story is a FANTASTIC illustration of the value of a knife. I grew up in an era when it was 100% normal for boys to carry a pocket knife. We are not talking about a conventional pocket knife. I keep a 5" fixed blade in a horizontal sheath on the belt. The opposite side has my gun. It is a crazy world out there. Training, fitness, diet, decent tools, periodic refresher instruction, all good things to keep you at your personal best. Stay alert, stay alive.
Before I got into firearms I carried two knives on me everywhere. I actually would practice drawing my knives and I would run drills with them, pretty much just shadowboxing practicing different knife strikes.
I got into a similar situation also on the Fourth of July about five years ago. I had a knife on me. Also, a pair of shorts forgot that I had it on me after I was getting jumped and then realized I did pull it out. Kept to my side. As soon as someone else standing by watching scene that I had a knife, they screamed out that I had a knife the situation changed because now they didn’t want me no more. Pictured that.

A knife is just as effective, it just isn't a range weapon like a firearm. When I was a Paramedic, our instructor in Anatomy and physiology was the head ER doctor. A blade length of 3, inches is sufficient if you know where the arteries are.

@@daxmafesiSpeaking from experience, Blades do NOT kill faster than a bullet. The movies do not represent real life. You can shut someone off alot faster with a gun. A knife takes roughly a minute or more.
I am a veteran police officer. In my country there is a terrorist attack almost every day. I am always armed, sometimes with two pistols, and I usually carry a knife too. An ordinary person should try not Put yourself in a situation where he loses the advantage. For example, you are in a car and a conflict is brewing You need to stay in the car , since in the car you have the advantage of being able to escape or run over the enemy . For an untrained person, pepper spray is more suitable for self-defense than a knife because using a knife requires skill.
This sounds like good solid advice and logic, most people lack the aggression to use a knife in this way, so spray and run away is a better option. Would agree skill is also a factor but a knife will require a commitment to use it with lethal intent, spray will be hard to use properly if they or he is already on you , wind and closed quarters means you could get yourself in the process, no advantage there . Like most things , a tool for a job , both would be better in most cases , if you don't have a gun you could keep distance with the spray if they persist, the knife could come into play .
@stronggrom68 I agree if you have close contact with the enemy pepper spray is useless unless you spray it into his mouth (I'm not kidding). The spray is ideal for preventing the enemy or group from getting close.
The wind and indoor space factors must be taken into account when using the spray.A knife can help out in a situation of fighting with a close contact; an ordinary person in this situation will most likely lose even with a knife
Pepper spray requires skill so you don't spray yourself, and it can effect everyone in the car, it can be effected by the rain or the wind or even the other guy's glasses, plus a certain percent of the population is less effected by it than others; ex-cons already know whether or not they can continue to fight thru the inconvenient discomfort. Using any less than lethal device signals that you were not in sufficient fear for your life to use lethal force if available. But OC spray might be better than nothing if you can't or won't carry a REAL weapon. I guess it's better than a rape whistle sometimes. I prefer two knives and usually also a gun.
As someone trained in Knife Combatives, I don't carry a knife for self-defense. I carry pepper-spray because I can deploy it without having to get up close and personal. Plus, knives have no stopping power. I know that's a controversial statement but it's true.
Pepper spray has no stopping power either. Police and military spray themselves so they know what happens and can handle it. I have. And people who have had mental breaks, or are on drugs aren’t going to feel it. Your pepper spray won’t work against this.
@VikingMale You just made yourself look beyond ignorant. Great job. Only reply you'll get from me. I don't waste my time with keyboard warriors who think they are experts on self-defense.
Naa he is right , ive been pepper sprayed multiple times , its not going to stop a tough attacker or even slow them , when people see their own blood pouring out they generally will realize they not gonna win and back off . Give me the knife 10 out of 10 ten times specifically when its life and death. You not killing anyone with your pepper spray, knife doesn't run out , knife is super deadly in the correct hands , more stopping power that most hand guns .
@@NGMonocrom Wrong. I've been OC sprayed (in training) and I've been cut (by accident). Guess which hurt more, and it never expires or runs dry, and it even works in the wind and the rain. It also opens packages.

Fair point. I think he meant it as a viable self defence weapon instead of a firearm.
If you think pepper spray is a good self defense tool for untrained individuals then you have never deployed civilian grade pepper spray
👍
As someone trained in Knife Combatives, I don't carry a knife for self-defense. I carry pepper-spray because I can deploy it without having to get up close and personal. Plus, knives have no stopping power. I know that's a controversial statement but it's true.
Pepper spray has no stopping power either. Police and military spray themselves so they know what happens and can handle it. I have. And people who have had mental breaks, or are on drugs aren’t going to feel it. Your pepper spray won’t work against this.
@VikingMale
You just made yourself look beyond ignorant.
It also opens packages.
knives can have stopping power , depending on the target but then they are absolutely deadly!
You need more training. Training until you learn that you are the weapon and everything is a tool.
I’m ostracized so i wouldn’t know
Rodent 🎉
Thank God, you made it. Sounds like it was done on purpose to get you out of your truck.
Cops are secretaries with a gun. Keep that in mind.
