Ma was already declining and his once amazing footwork has slowed down quite a bit. But he still managed to put up a great fight with his experience and tactics. Man, I just love his chop blocks, changeable attack angles, and change of pace. Really smart and skillful plays. As a penholder myself (inspired by Ma in my early childhood), I simply love both Ma and Xu. Great match.

Ma lin played well but he was too old for that while xu xin was gettin better and better, different generation ! And it’s gonna be the same with harimoto and others young players compared to Boll, Long, xu xin.
Big respect for samsonov who still run the game !

Blame the ball change. This mid-distance rally stuff doesn't work against fast close-table players anymore. Spin is important still, but speed is a MUCH bigger factor than it was a few years ago.

It's hard to understand Ma Lin's service at 6:24. His arm at the point of contact doesn't look like it's brushing the ball in a way to move it to extreme left of XX. Just a moment after brushing the ball, he moves his arm backwards, instead of moving forward like in a pendulum serve. Deceiving for the opponent maybe. It looks so good.

I'd say if Xu didn't hit so many net shots Ma lin might've had a better chance. Xu Xin is a awesome player but during this game he hit the net a lot causing Ma lin to hit the ball the ball higher than he probably would've wanted.
