So the head movement is called pulsing and it is used to keep time with the music. The job of the center marimba is to define time for the entire front ensemble so the head movement is used show what time is for all the market percussionist and non-marching players.

    • @AdamTanPercussion

The whole audience started paying attention to the tables and if they would run over the cymbal, everyone cheered when someone managed to save the cymbal and get it off the floor. It was crazy.

Cannon The Artillery Weapon I was there too!! At one point they spun the table and the wheel almost ran over it, and everyone in the audience was freaking out. Then yeah when he grabbed it finally everybody started screaming. It was an amazing experience and it was my first WGI finals. I hope I can go again :)

You chose 2 good videos to watch. The way WGI percussion works is it divided into 2 segments scholastic and independent. Scholastic groups are high school age members (14 to 18) from the same school while Independent groups are by audition and can have members from all over; age range 14 to 22. Each segment has 3 levels (A class, Open class and World class) where the levels of execution are different. A class expectations are to demonstrate basic skills, Open is somewhere in the middle and world class are advanced skills. There are regional competitions throughout the US and around the world and the season ends at WGI championships in Dayton Ohio. Sparkman Indoor is a Scholastic Open group from Alabama and they won their class this year. Pulse percussion is an independent world group from California and they finished 2nd in their class.

Hey Adam! Thanks so much for watching WGI shows!!! It really means a lot to the DCI/WGI community that watches you :)) Some shows I think you’d like are,
    1. Broken City 2019 (world champions that year) This one is really interpretive and abstract
    2. RCC 2018 (SCPA Champions that year) this one’s JAZZY
    3. PULSE 2017 (this is perfect for spoopy season)
    4. Broken City 2018 (This is one, well I just think it’s catchy and it’s the first BC show I watched)
I’m from So-Cal so all these groups are ... well from So-Cal haha I’m sorry I don’t know too many East Coast based shows! This last one I’m gonna recommend is actually a highschool, and one of the very first shows I saw that got me rooted in the idea of performing in WGI/DCI
    5. Etiwanda Highschool 2018 (“The Shadows of My Heart”)

@@TheMidnightUmbreonMC I saw it live too. It's definitely really solid. Great show design, choreography, visual, uniforms, props, music, sound design; it was honestly a master class in Indoor show design. I'd say the only thing holding it back was some of the dirtiness, unfortunately. Which, I now realize has nothing to do with design, and only the ability of the members, and I didn't need to bring it up in the first place.

Check out Dartmouth's 2017 show, Emotional Rollercoaster. The xylo run in the beginning is ridiculous! I saw someone post about Music City Mystique's 2017 -- all time favorite. It was my first chance seeing them live, and I had never seen anything so perfect!

Loved the video!! This was a great one to watch!
The vertical camera/head movement is called “pulsing.” Marching Band front ensembles and Indoor Percussion front ensembles do it to keep tempo and show more expression. They also look around constantly (hence the horizontal camera movement) to make sure you and the people next to you are perfectly in sync.

Hey Adam! As a concert percussionist, it is worth noting that WGI also has a set of Concert divisions (scholastic concert A, Open, and World class). These ensembles consist only of non-marching percussion instruments, and are solely judged on music and how they perform that music. Given that it is a spin-off of the marching activity, the shows certainly draw some of the creative aspect from that (having a "show theme," coordinating motions like mallet changes or body language, etc) but the focus is purely based on the music. It is also an excellent opportunity for schools with lower budgets to give their students a rewarding competitive experience.
The best example of this hidden gem within the WGI activity is Woodbridge High School from 2012. I was fortunate to see this show live, and I have never again seen high school students perform at the level of that group. Their mastery of their instruments and dedication to the performance (along with a stellar composition/arrangement) make this one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. I think you will really enjoy it.
Love the channel, keep it up!
    Zach

RCC 2018 is my favorite indoor drumline show. It's more of a jazzy show, with a trumpet. They won indoor independent world class that year, and I can see why.

i love u talking abt the attention to detail- in winter drumline you’re super exposed. it’s very very similar in DCI, but the human body has a different visual function. instead of big shapes, you focus more on the movement of the individual. you’re never more than 5 yards from a judge. it’s cool the level of precision and control these super high level groups have, and even top class high school!

Hey Adam, you should look into six mallet techniques. I’m learning under a prof who’s created his own six mallet technique. It’s quite interesting and it would make for a good video

Just as some extra information. There are three main parts of WGI. There parts are color guard, Percussion, and winds. They each compete separately and have their own championship events. You should check out some color guards as they are very cool to watch as well.

Indoor percussion is very cool. The drill is very fast paced. I am a snare (as you can see from my one video) and I have tried mallet music and what they have is very difficult XD. But, my school didn't have a very good show for the year that I have done it, and i am hopefully doing it again this year and we hopefully have a better show! I'm glad you enjoyed it

I marched Blue Stars with a few people from Pulse and they are all so sweet! I don't know much about percussion since I'm a colorguard member but I definitely am interested by percussion ensembles and I tend to hang with a lot of drummers haha. In this show alone I knew at least 10 people. Even though colorguard isn't your thing, it would be interesting to see you react to a winterguard show.

With indoor percussion the front is the only melody so we have to perform and tell a story by our movements and expressions. Indoor is all about telling a story, and that is why i love marching indoor so much

Indoor percussion takes alot. I'm in a show and the practice time can go all day for a week or 4 hour practice after school.

Think of indoor as more of a theatrical performance as a posed to a marching performance.
