I know its early to mention this, but when its harvest time make sure to plain cook and puree some of your veggies. That way youll have homemade baby food for Baby Acre. You can also make things, like double batches of mashes potatoes, freeze it in ice cube trays, then transfer to freezer bags. It will be perfect portions for the little one. You probably knew this already, but thought I would mention it just in case. 🙂

Try putting copper tape around the edge of your beds to deter the slugs. I’ve found that helps and is relatively inexpensive. (Plus, organic)

Hey Becky, if you end up with only 1 surviving tomatillo plant, make sure you go and buy a start or two because you need at least two tomatillos to get fruit.

A whole egg takes ages to brake down, what you wanna do is use a mortar and pestal to crush and grind the shells up so the plant has access to the calcium 😊
I was going to say that, too. I have always used crushed egg shells in my garden. It provides nutrients and deters the slugs, as well. Double win!
Mortar is time consuming. We dry shells in paper bag and jump baby on it, until they are old enough for toddler stomping. Chicken chores are great early kid chores.

I crushed mine and dried them in the oven on a cookie sheet. Put them in a blender and made powder. See “Rain Country “ for the directions.
I rinse and dry my egg shells. Put them in a container in my windowsill to dry. Once dry I crush them up in a bag and pound them as small as I can get them. And put some in when I plant. MOST importantly I put a generous ring around the stem to stop the slugs from getting to the plant. It also feeds the plant.
Have you ever tried starting your seeds on paper towels? I do that with the ones that are better to direct sow, just so I know they’re viable. Once they sprout, I put them in the soil. It works very well for me.

@@AcreHomestead I fold a paper towel in half, put the seeds in the middle, and put the whole towel in a ziploc bag. I put in just enough water to completely soak the paper towel, but you don’t want standing water that’s too much. Then I arrange the seeds so they each have plenty of room to sprout, zip up the bag, and then place in a warm spot. I usually put mine on top of my refrigerator, but anywhere reasonably warm is fine. You’ll see them start to sprout within a few days! It’s a fun activity for kids as well. If y’all have any other questions let me know!
Also wanted to add… when you go to put them in the soil, make sure it’s root down! 😊
Also, a bunch of garden experts have said that putting eggs in the ground with your tomatoes isn’t really going to help with calcium because it takes waaaay too long to break down the shells. If you want to use egg shells to add calcium, it’s better to dehydrate and powder them, then ideally compost them. If your soil tests didn’t show depleted calcium levels, then probably the only calcium issues you’ll have are absorption issues from inconsistent watering.

I have been diagnosed with kidney stones plus infection. I've spent 17 days in the hospital due to infection leading to sepsis. That time in the hospital was rough. I don't know how much strength you used after the cancer diagnosis and then removal. Please take care of yourself. May God Bless You.

Hi Becky I first want to thank you and your family for everything you taught me and my family regarding cooking, gardening and having a homestead. This was my first year planting seeds. My seeds did not prosper, only two plants survived. One hybrid Amish Roma tomato and one jalapeño. I took it as a learning experience not a failure. I will still continue to try.
You can use that plastic tote as a cover for a trey of starts. I had sone out but not in the ground yet so I found out it fits over a standard tray and used it on a cooler night.

Perhaps next year you can put casters on your shelving units so you can just roll the entire unit outside to hardened them off.
I think I would have put the cattle panel trellis in about 12 inches so the plant would be on the working side near the path. I would find reaching through to manage the plants would be frustrating.

Have you ever tried to over winter your pepper plants? It’s pretty easy if you have a semi cool place to store them all winter. I keep mine in my garage. I already have several almost mature peppers! Once I found out that they’re actually perennial in warmer climates it seemed wasteful to grow new plants every year

Oh my! I did this past winter. To say I ended up with an aphid infestation is an understatement and the all showed up while my seedlings were popping out.

Hey Becky, I just gotta say thank you for beeing you and making all of this content. Back a couple of years ago, when my granny was still alive, I used to preserve vegetables with her she grew in her garden. This all stopped when she got to old to handle her garden on her own. As of now, I inherited all of her food preservation items and thanks to your videos Iam thrilled to start doing so again. I even started gardening on my own this year. I build a raised bed on my balkony and started an herbbed in an old wine barrel. So thank you for all of your encouragement!

I was thinking of a suggestion that you could do when you have several bags of compost, you could get a feed barrel and a dog food scoop and fill the feed barrel with your compost that way you could have your tray of pots and just use the scoop to scoop the compost into the pots instead of having the bag on the table. And speaking of table you could put a small lip on the edge of the table that way when you're planting the dirt doesn't fall on your feet and slippers.

They can be used as a "trap" plant by planting them a bit from the garden. They're great for this, plus they're beautiful!

It surly is..well for me..I do little bit every day . currently pregnant 27 weeks and mama to a two year active little girl
becky yes it is taking longer to plant because of burning the holes but next year they are already burnt so this year a little more work but next year you will appreciate it, also you can do crop rotation and just rotate your cloth and hole are ready to go no matter where you decide to plant your tomatoes good job sending you thoughts of strength to keep going

Pink banana squash are wonderful. My favorite winter squash is blue Hubbard. They can become huge, are a "meaty" squash that can be used in place of pumpkin puree too. We always grow lemon cucumbers that are delicious for just eating. I love your enthusiasm for the garden.

You also dont go over the top with filming... i love the perfectly imperfect. i just enjoy hearing your voice and seeing you do your thing. even a time lapse is entertaining plus you always try to do a voice over and its just enjoyable... so many youtubers after they get so big they think they need to turn into a huge production... I just love you being you and just see you do your thing. Personally dont need all these fancy angles and everything. just plop us down n smile n i know im happy hahaha
I think you already mentioned having a planting calendar, but Portland nursery has a Veggie Planting Calendar pdf that you can download that is so useful. It tells you month by month, exactly when to start what seeds indoors, what seeds to start outdoors, and what starts outdoors. It helps avoid the issues of planting cucumbers or peppers too early. May 15th is the time they recommend for tomatoes outdoors, but only if they are covered. This year we have a heat wave so covering is unecessary, but you can buy these bags to put around tomatoes that have little cells you fill with water. They heat up during the day so as nighttime temps drop they keep the plants warmer.

I struggled with slugs too. I found out they like the wood of the raised bed. I compost my egg shells whole & they don't totally break down. So when I top dress with my homemade compost it acts as a slug deterent because slugs don't like the sharp eggshells. So my laziness of not grinding egg shells has paid off 😊

My mother in law put squash seeds layered between wet paper towels and waited for them to sprout before we planted them outside. We lived in Tigard Oregon at the time. 9 out of 10 at least would grow. We always had a bounty to share with neighbors and our congregation 💞
We have an expected late frost tonight! Thankfully, this is my first year seed starting and I started a little late. So all I have outside is potatoes, onions, and carrots. Learning so much about gardening from you! Thank you Becky!!!!!
Oh Becky! You need a cart on wheels to take the plants out to the patio and wheel them back in. Maybe a shelf like cart that you can even water them outside too then wheel them back inside. Maybe a thought for next year.

Love this time of year. Here in MN, we have a short growing season for everything. We have our pumpkin, squash, and cucumber seeds just now planted in the garden and will be planting all other seedlings in the garden on Memorial weekend. Usually the garden is done by first frost, hopefully.
Such a short growing season here in MN! Seedlings are desperate to move outside for more growing space. Hopefully we will get them in next week/weekend.

My grandparents anytime they cooked eggs always rinsed, dried and crushed eggshells and saved in a jar to use in the garden. In the fall my grandfather would also gather all the raked leaves from the neighbors to cover his garden to compost and then in the spring he would till them in. He always had the best garden and beautiful produce.
Hello Becky. The garden looks great. A little tip about watering. You won't burn your tomatoes if you water them in full sun. That's a myth. The only thing that happens is that the water evaporates faster, and the plant can not absorb it. This applies to all plants.
Hi Sarah, I hope u don’t mind but I challenge that, my son watered my plants from overhead being lazy last year in the heat of summer and absolutely fried the leaves of my plants. I doubt it would happen in spring but in the heat of summer they will fry especially in my Texas heat.
@Sarah agreed. The sun boils the water and kills it or something. If you have to water in full sun, make sure you only water the soil.😊
I always questioned that, when it rains and then the sun comes, it doesn’t burn them. What’s the difference?
I think the problems can happen with the temperature of the water. In AZ, the water temp in the hose can be blistering when it first comes out of a Summer hose. Water at decent temps won’t burn your plants, but getting tomato leaves wet CAN make them more susceptible to disease if you live in a humid climate.
I actually have sunburned some plants before. They were newly planted pepper seedlings which got water splashed on them. The sun burned a water droplet pattern into the leaves. They did recover just fine though.
Becky, I lived in New Zealand and worked in a restaurant as a prep cook. We used blue sweet meat squash to make our pumpkin soup. It's the best one to use for it.
I just wanted to throw that out if you happen to need a suggestion of what you can do with it. Hit me up if you'd like the recipe that our restaurant used. It was a beautiful soup and what we were well known for.

I enjoy everything "we" do together. Very inspiring, thank you for that.
It works well to cut a row in the fabric like a long capital letter I, with 3-4" slice at each end. Then fold it under and pin it so you can plant a row of seeds close together instead of burning holes. Works well for green beans, greens, carrots, peas, ect.
Becky you have been such an inspiration! This is my second year and I've been watching you for about 3 years. I've been all about saving money and making budget cuts where I can for my family of 4 and you have helped me so much! Everytime I watch your videos I learn something new while trying out my own garden. I have a spare room and hallway filled with plants which was inspired by Becky's love of gardening. I never went in there and so I just put waterproof floor coverings or even garbage bags on the ground and made it my grow room!

I put a piece of salmon (inc skin, flesh, bones etc) at the bottom of each of my tomato plants when I planted them. First time doing it, we'll see how it goes. It's supposed to supply fertilizer for the whole growing season.

I love how easy nasturtiums are to grow. I have them all over my garden. I hope they help me out with keeping the bugs off my squash and cucumbers this year.
Live about 90 minutes north of you. We LOVE the landscape fabric. The weeding is almost non-existant where we have it and can be used again and again.

Hi Becky! I have have a huge pill bug problem every year at planting time. They literally mow down all my starts. So, now I take the 4” or larger plastic pots and make “collars” out of them to protect the babies. I cut the bottoms out of the pots. Sometimes I wrap the outside of the pots with sticky tape too. Works really well. Keeps the munchers away while the starts get established.

In the UK I always have to start summer/winter squash and cucumbers indoors as our climate will not allow them to be direct sown. I have never had an issue transfering them into the garden. Crown Prince is my favourite winter squash - great to grow and great to eat (both firm flash and great taste).
I’m in the uk and trying crown Prince for the first time this year. I’m also excited that Becky is trying the Mus. Provence as it’s my first year too…it looks beautiful 🤩
We also have had no problem with starting squash in the greenhouse and then setting them out. We live in the PNW, like you, Becky.

Every time I see a garden video pop up I get excited :) I love watching the progress of it all come together. It's such a beautiful space, and I'm looking forward to seeing it all fill up over the summer as you share with us. You've been a big inspiration to me to just get started, and I appreciate the reminder that it's okay if things aren't in the ground yet. I decided a few weeks ago to turn the border of our backyard into a flower garden, then added a section in one corner to grow some tomatoes, peppers and whatever else is exciting to us. I'm doing it on a budget, so been doing everything by hand. I've spent a couple weeks pulling up sod and trying to get things ready, while looking at the plants I've already gotten and feeling overwhelmed because they aren't in the ground yet. I needed to remember that it's okay, and progress takes time. We also have a long growing season here in the PNW, which is new to me, so it's okay to slow down and enjoy the process.

I'm pretty sure you would achieve the same results by using only the eggshell for your tomatoes rather then the whole egg. Tdhat's how we've been doing it for years and it works great. We keep all our eggshells for a few weeks before planting the tomatoes in the garden and use it as you do for extra calcium... But whatever is easier for you :)

My granny used to soak hers in water and its liquid fertilizer. The funk was high!
Plus the eggshells kills the slugs
Same here, they go in my vitamix and it becomes powder.
@@sarahhardridge2392 no it doesn't kill them. Some believe it repels them because they don't like the jagged feel of the broken shells. But there have been others that believe it has no effect at all.

19:54 On the subject of decorating with pumpkins, have you heard of “pumpkin on a stick”? It’s technically an inedible eggplant, but looks like little orange pumpkins growing on a branch. You may have seen it at Trader Joe’s since they often carry stems of it during the fall. That would be fun to grow and decorate with. =)
Them tomato plants look great. I've never heard of a whole egg being put in but normally see just the crushed shells which is what I'm trying this year. I feel your pain with slugs and unfortunately the downside of the landscape fabric is that the slugs have a perfect environment under it 😢 Happy growing lovely Xx
I used that mini torch to cut my weed fabric instead of a knife or scissors and that worked pretty well 🤷🏻♀️
