2 more things. If you’re on a sup or a longboard you can get set waves way earlier. Just because you CAN get every wave doesn’t mean you SHOULD. If you have priority and paddle for a wave but you don’t catch it, back of the line
If you make the mistake of dropping in, definitely apologize to the surfer. The ocean is big and beautiful, and it’s our duty to share it and keep each other safe. Not a lot of content talks about back pedaling, so thanks a bunch for clearing that up!
pretty much spot on.. you could add that it doesn't matter what craft you ride if you wait your turn in the line up, especially locals. You may not like a certain craft or not get along with a group of them at a wave but that doesn't change the rules of the water. #respect may have covered that in the beginning though.
@@BradJacobson Brad we want to see videos of YOU surfing out there with the rest of us kooks! When do we get a video of YOU surfing? ☺️ Happy new year!
That covers it pretty nicely, Brad! Nice to see ML 3:30 laying down the law in your video, like he does in the water, and on the beach. RESPECT the locals people. You get what you give.
I’m at HB. With a crowd as big as Northside, you’re bound to be on the giving and receiving end of getting burned. Best thing to do is just give a quick wave and apologize and move on. Most times given the swell you have plenty of time to bail out the back as shown around 6:10. Trust me, you will accidentally burn someone eventually. It sucks, but as long as you apologize and own the mistake, even the locals here will respect that. Just watch the teenagers. They snake everyone regardless of priority.
Brad - Thanks for creating this video. Please produce more... With the influx of new surfers this information is more critical than ever before. Not trying to create a negative vibe, but possibly you could include some injuries and board damage, to allow newcomers to see how serious a careless mistake can be to another individual and order equipment. Thanks again!
Etiquette, safety and respect are "out the window" when anybody snakes or drops in. This especially applies to locals since they are in charge of setting the tone at the break.
I learned a long time ago not to "push in the lip" on someone who is already riding a wave. Don't go for a wave if someone already dropped in and is riding the wave. Dropping in or snaking somebody is the biggest no on and might get your ass kicked. If it's that crowded, I'll find somewhere else to surf.
Come to Hawaii and surf. Lol most tourists and mainland surfers aren’t allowed to paddle out at surf breaks. Try and drop in or snake a wave, people get taught lessons real quick.
Can somebody clear up the following: one surfer sits out the back, one on the inside but closer to the peak. The guy outside though not closest to the peak starts paddling way earlier and gets up before the surfer on the inside. Inside dude does a late drop and calls outside bro out of the wave even though he was standing/surfing first. Who's right here?
Watching this video makes my blood boil. I've travelled/lived/surfed all over the world and I can say that surfing is about to implode on its own popularity. Everyone wants to be a surfer these days, you know, because instagram "influencing" n sh*t. I've never seen so many clueless and reckless fools with surfboards as I have over the past decade. As this video stated, if you mind your manners, you'll get waves and enjoy yourself. Paddle up the inside without waiting your turn and you'll either get your head bashed in or vibed out of the line up. If you can't be courteous then please just quit surfing and do the rest of the world a favour. 😎

Well said!

Remember to smile out there and say hello. If it's not well overhead then it's not super serious.
Very good point!

Brad, thank you for this new line of educational surf content. With your expert instruction hopefully I can stop being a kook sometime soon!
hahahahaha. I'm always looking out for ya.
THANK you! All observations are right on the money. I hope people take this to heart.

Crumbling the shoulder. That's a real pet peeve of mine (let alone a full "drop in")
Your the man Brad!!! I asked for this a few weeks ago, I can't wait to get out
You reminded me that I hadn't covered it yet. Thanks

god bless your heart for making this video. there's a place for you in surf heaven😆

You actually know what you're talking about!
Every once in a while!
That was cool Brad. Gonna send this to my 17yr old twin boys who are still learning. Thx!
That is awesome!

Lots of good advice!
Glad it was helpful!
Locals that are out of position and drop in on someone every set need to get sorted out.
Hey Brad, I’m newly a big fan of your channel. Who is the surfer at 1:46 ? Such a beautiful style
I don't know how they do it out there in California; what with the flea bathes I've seen in some of the videos.
Good video!
Thanks!
Good video. I friend everyone. Never know when your life is in danger and you need help. Or you have to save someone else’s life.
Surfing in CA looks like ... no fun

The person who stands up first usually (but not always) has priority.
is that Steph Gilmore at 6:01?
Yep
one thing u missed was snaking.... happens all the time
There's a snowballs chance you won't experience this these days😁
Up in PNW there is no crowds
That’s because, in the PNW, if you stay out too long you turn into a popsicle! 🥶😂

If it’s that crowded there is no etiquette. Especially in those dirty 3rd world so called spots in South Bay.
If I snake your wave I’m sorry!!! I’m learning 😭😭😭
No such thing as etiquette, gone along time ago.....
Local or not respect people. Cause some locals hate new people coming to the surf spot. The ocean isn’t yours !!
Brad is a creamster
Frontside Avalanche
Fuck giving the “locals” set waves if I’m in a good spot and I’ve been waiting it’s my wave
