Only correction/ tip I would give people is, for canvas size, keep it to the power of 2. So 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, 64x64 etc. Makes like a lot easier, specially when using them in games and such
This is the first result (for me) when you look up how to make pixel art in procreate, and it’s the only video anyone would need. Perfect explanation from beginning to end, really appreciate it!
This is such a fantastic tutorial. I have bought your amazing brushes in the past and love your tutorials but this has been the best. I am a tattoo artist wanting to get into pixel tattoos and this has helped me no end. Thank you!!!
4 ways to do this 1. Make your shape source a bit larger for the brush 2. Go to the brush settings and set the minimum opacity to 100% 3. Go to the apple pencil brush settings and change the Bleed to 100% 4. Go to the shape source settings and turn off Shape Filtering to 'No Filtering'
I read that procreate could do pixel art. I pulled up some quick steps online and then got exactly nowhere in the app itself lol. Had no idea there was this many steps. An impressively nuanced and powerful app. Super awesome tutorial. Much thanks
Anyone that's having trouble with only being able to draw horizontal/vertical. Hit the wrench > prefs> gesture controls>assisted drawing and turn it off on the apple pencil. was driving me NUTS with this great tutorial. Only thing I couldn't figure out at first.
I loved so much this tuto, I tried it right away! My only issue is with the brush: Is it a way to make the color at it's darkest value from the first tap? I have to give a double tap in order to get it darker and it's quite annoying.

I was looking for something to get started with an illustration for a website and I feel like I’ve happened upon the gold mine of tutorials. This is so informative, easy to digest and interesting to follow. Thank you SO much!
Depends, but you can try to import the animation into Procreate and it should create a layer for each frame. From there you can choose to resize canvas, then make sure to check resample canvas and it should resample every layer in the animation.
Amazing tutorial but i cant figure out how to get a perfect square to fill? Whenever i use the quick shape i get weid artefacts around the egde of the square?
Could be issues with too small of a shape source. Try making it larger or use a full white square for the shape source. The tutorial shows the brush settings I like to use, but I often don't use quick shape in pixel art. Try that!
Thank you so much for this video! I love pixel art (sword looks amazing!) and I didn't know how to make this kind of brush. I followed the steps, but I have no idea how to change the shape to square. I tapped with my two fingers at it made it reverse with the white circle in the middle, so it's a different thing sadly. I followed all the steps further and achieved kind of satisfying result, haha, but it's still not perfect. Could you please tell me, how did you change the shape of the brush? I'll be very grateful! :) Greetings :)
@VisualTimmy thanks man. Idk what it is about the iPad lol every time I pick it up I go full smooth 🧠 😅 I'm like this in every tablet application. I guess I'm so used to the robustness and sensory overload of desktop applications the streamline UI of tablet apps throw me off. Somehow I get lost in the simplicity of it 🤣
Is there a way to double the size of the canvas and still be able to draw pixel perfect images? I doubled the size of the canvas and it tends to bleed out onto other pixels
That issue would be based on the size of the pixel brush. You would need to use a small brush size and zoom it to get it to work properly. Then you'll need to rescale your grid and be sure it still matches 1:1 with the canvas pixels. I tend to resize my artwork after, or start with a larger pixel canvas to begin with!
it doesn't matter too much, some people like it to be a full black square, I like somewhere around 60% the size of the full square. Try different sizes and see what works best for you!
I don’t understand why the brush still act like a regular brush filling the squares like it should I did everything like him I just needed more and smaller squares
Not even quite sure how to word this question, but how do I need to adjust this brush to different grid sizes? Say I’m working on a 700x100 grid or something for a project? I tried using this brush on a 2048x2048 canvas, added a grid (don’t even know what size, I was testing the brush) and the brush didn’t behave the same, naturally.. what are the rules to this so I can easily use the brush on different scales for different projects?
No matter the canvas size, if this brush is set to the smallest setting, it will always paint 1 pixel. If you want to work with large canvas size in the thousands, then you can just use a regular brush. This brush is specific for painting one pixel at a time, otherwise with large sizes you will get large block shapes that don't flow smoothly. If you want to adjust this brush to work better at larger sizes, I recommend changing the square to a circle for shape source, then lowering the spacing so that the brush flows more smoothly!
I learnt it from your video very well timmy. And till for me yours explaining and making or capturing the video is best. Can you upload more pixel drawings like this. Waiting mann❤
You can import a pure white or black square image to the shape source, or you can choose import > from library > then look for the white square in the grain source
Yes, go to brush settings in the Properties tab and change the minimum opacity to 100%. You can also simply duplicate your outline pixel layer a couple times and it will fill the opacity. It is caused by slight variation in opacity from pressure and location the brush was used. I will work to refine this for the next update of the pixel brush settings
Hiya I did this but when I resized it in a new bigger canvas and clicked nearest neighbour it muddied up the colours and added in more colour tones that I didn’t draw in, I checked that the colour profile was the same, do you know what went wrong? Thanks
Thought about a pixel donut, searched for a procreate tutorial, watched, followed along, learned something new, liked it very much, clicked like, subscribed - me happy.
do you have drawing assist turned on the layer? open the layer menu and check for that. tap on the thumbnail of the layer and turn off drawing assist, that may be why
I’m encountering the same situation. I can go only horizontal and vertical with apple pencil, but can go diagonal with finger (nothing wrong with my apple pencil, paints well with normal brushes on other canvases). I’m not having drawing assist on. I can’t figure out why :(
I’m trying to figure out if I need to use Aseprite. When I use the selection tool, circle my sprite (say I want to copy a wizard hat) and make it slightly larger. Procreate wont (or I can find it) resize. What it does is adds blocks together and if I turn it, it goes nuts. However I can do what I’m asking for in Aseprite. Any suggestions or is this a limitation on procreate.
Yes Aseprite is designed specifically for small scale pixel art, so it will probably be better at moving small pixels around. If you are using Procreate you can change your interpolation settings to nearest neighbor and try to resize a couple times and see if it works. I will experiment and see what I can find.
My square isn’t importing for some reason. I saved it on the same file type and it’s a similar size…it selects it and acts like it’s uploaded but then it doesn’t. Grr
Great video! but I have one question, when I use a reference on these much smaller canvases the image looks super blurry, do you know of a way to fix this?
I just opened the color menu and chose black as the color. If you mean its going gray/slightly transparent, then follow these steps: 1. Make your shape source a bit larger for the brush 2. Go to the brush settings and set the minimum opacity to 100% 3. Go to the apple pencil brush settings and change the Bleed to 100% 4. Go to the shape source settings and turn off Shape Filtering to 'No Filtering'
There is lots of software that are made for pixel art that have all this set up already. This is for those that want to stick inside Procreate! Also, once you set this up once with a couple canvas sizes, you don't need to do it every time which is nice.
The canvas is a square, so you just have to drag from your color picker and it will fill the canvas. Then use the move tool to resize it and center it!

on shape filtering, set to "no filtering" to avoid smooth pixels. :) Thank you for the guide!

I might be dumb... how do I make the black square...
I'd like to know as well!
make a square canvas, drag and drop black from the color picker to fill area, then use transform to make it smaller while retaining its square aspect!

How did you make it into a square??????
Make what into a square?
@@VisualTimmythe brush…
is it possible to use this as sprites within Godot?
Yes!
Easy, clear, well paced. 10/10 video
Why won’t my new pixel brush go diagonally? It will only do vertical or horizontal?
you probably have drawing assist turned on the layer. turn that off and you can draw diagonally!
Hi, when i draw I’m getting partially transparent squares surrounding the pixels I draw. Any help?
Make your Brush shape source larger or smaller. You can also change the brush setting to be 100% minimum opacity!
My procreat doesnt centre de black square, how do i do that😢
How did you make the brush into a square shape?
Change the shape source to a square!
It helped a lot, thank you so much!
This is a good tutorial to make a good style on procreate, thank you bro, make more. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽

I’m so confused, 2:24 how did you make it a square? I’m just stuck now.
You can import a pure white or black square image to the shape source, or you can choose import > from library > then look for the white square in the grain source
Why is my square hollow? The shape I added was a black box like u did
Tap on your shape source and 'tap once with 2 fingers' this will invert the shape. The square should be white once the file is in the shape source.
How do i make the pixel brush i followed everything it didn’t work ;-;
Is it still too big? Adjust the maximum size in the brush settings!
What a perfect tutorial. Grazie

Lol, was happening to me too a lot. Happy to help!

Is there a way to stop the inconsistency of the colours? like at 5:00.

@@VisualTimmy i see thank you very much. Duplicating does work and increasing the opacity does make it better.
Mines doesn’t work, it’s opacity is weird and looks like a really zoomed in line :/ any idea what I did wrong?
hmmm, please elaborate. It could be the size of your brush shape source is too small. not sure, I'd need more info to help!
