$15 LED Strip vs. $250 HDMI Ambilight Kit - Lightberry HD Review / Editorial

- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- RGB LEDs are all the rage nowadays, especially in the PC Gaming community. They're bright, efficient, and extremely affordable, going as cheap as $15 for five feet of lights on Amazon.
So what sets this HDMI Ambilight kit from Lightberry apart from other cheaper LEDs, and is it worth the hefty price tag it goes for?

Spends $400 on tv but spends $250 on led strip behind tv lol
It was sent to him by d company
With an arduino you can make it for 40$!
you can use the "digital" LED-strips (which are pretty much a ws2812b) with the Arduino too. Connecting a USB-TV-grabber to the composite out is enough to get the image-color for those leds (720x576 is plenty for like 10-30 LEDs...), no need to grab the HD-signal. Another pro: you don't have to switch HDMI-inputs and you also get the light-effect while using the internal tuner or onlinestreams on the TV.
kristofers how?
@@kristofers6559 Yeah, not really. Raspberry Pi is not that much more expensive

a "5050 LED" is the chip package format. It has nothing to do with it's analog-ness. APA-102 are also in a 5050 package, they just happen to have a microchip inside the package with the diodes.
I came to correct this. Thank yoj
yes yes hundred time yes. comparing this two led strips is like comparing apples to oranges. 5050 is just a type of diode (5mm width, 5mm height) ws2812b chip is the reason why you can address each diode
the 5050 strip without chip can be adjusted to 256(R)*256(G)*256(B)=16777216 colors with a 8 bit pwm register.
Can you please do a proper in-depth guide on how to hook up the Rasberry Pi to these LED lighting, how to use/make the program and apps work with the LED lighting too? I'm extremely interested in buying this, but not very knowledgeable in the Rasberry Pi thing.

Sadly though the Philips OLED TV only comes in a 55inch model and it doesn't have the level of detail or features as it's competitors (Sony A1 OLED and the LG B-E OLED sets). With a response time of 0.3ms and an input lag of 20ms, the 2017 LG OLED sets take the win when it comes to gaming on a big screen. I know I'll be getting the 65inch LG C7 OLED come September.
Are really comparing TVs for gaming?
Jeremy Clarkson It's the only way to get a big screen for gaming. The only other way is a projector which is more hassle. When there's a 65inch OLED 144Hz monitor, I'll take it, until then though I'm sticking with TV's. Just on a side note, the LG 2017 OLEDs can do 1080p@120Hz whereas OLEDs from competitors cannot. Plus OLED have a near instantaneous pixel response time. The only downside is input lag, but these new LG sets have an input lag of 20ms, far superior than any other TV I'm aware of and much closer to monitor specs. If you want to game on a big screen, this is it.

Now a competitor Dreamscreen is coming out with their new box which does HDMI2.0 and HDCP 2.2. On kickstarter now. Looks like Lightberry missed their chance. And they were out of stock now anyway
Lightberry already has a product in production, that puts them miles ahead of any Kickstarter campaign. All they need to do is tweak their existing product.
Yeah, the DreamScreenTV is easier to use.
do a vid on how to setup the led lights with rasberey pie like if you agree
Sam Wilde Why the hell do you need to see this guy do it? Theres plenty of videos on setting it up.
You put together very professional and personable videos. The Cat Bit even works!
Last wire(black) is not power.. It's ground, the power or the positive wires are red blue and green. They control which color LED should be how much bright.
More correctly for non-addressable strips, it's "common". All wires are "power", since the LEDs are direct-drive from the signals (R/G/B). Also, some LED strips use +12V as common, rather than ground. Addressable strips use two power, one non-driving signal (for data), and maybe one non-driving signal for data clock.
How dose this guy only have 70k subs???!!!

Is that freaking watermark on the background of the TV in the thumbnail?
Always give credit where credit is due.
Actually, red, green, and blue are "power". Black is mass.
Depends how exactly you wanna see it. Are the LEDs common anode or common cathode? Logical or physical energyflow?
I think you can't blame someone for saying this "incorrectly", because it depends how you see it. There are too many options to tell wether one is correct and another is not.
So have a good day everyone ^-^

Some Stripes had the +12VDC on the Blackwire and others had GND on the Blackwire
Good 44Key Controllers can switch everything so you can use any Stripes.
For that you have to turn your LEDs off with the off Button and then while they are off you must press the fade 7 button
You can buy a set of MARQ LED light strips for very cheap and have some pretty cool effects along with custom color by choosing the RGB(Sometimes A - Amber) values. Buy a modular that you can connect a DMX (Digital Mulitplex) decoder to the LEDs. You can get an interface for about $50 and buy the very cheap LEDs and make amazing effects. DMX lights are the way to go.
Showing off your setup with what looks like speakers from a 90s AIWA boombox. I think what gaming manchildren fail to realize is how less is more & having a bunch of cheesy flashy lights over everything is on par with what Fisher Price produces. "Gaming chairs", mouses shaped like daggers for battling mystical wizards... Anything to escape adulthood I guess.

the Ambilight tech at around the 10 minute mark i have seen already in software only, from SVP (Video Interpolation Software with a few extra features) and i dig it.
LED? No thank you! I had so much problems building my work/gaming PC last month due to everything being LED with glass windows these days and i just prefer simple matte black case.
Philips had Ambilight built into their TVs going back almost as far as 20 years ago
I saw this before and I couldn't actually find it on google (The border around the TV light thing). I have 3 of those 16€ strips in my room and now I'm really jealous and I really want them :C
Everything is nice but, spending 310.74 $ - 323.95 $, on a light strip ...

You have such a great voice! And your thoughts are very well developed, have you considered working with a speech therapist ? I think you and your channel would greatly benefit from it. Overall great content and video layout... love the cat.
there has to be a cheaper version of RGB not analog set... im pretty sure i saw one of these on Kickstarter for like 100 bucks,, also just noticed this was made a year ago.. if anyone of you want that set up for a steal just google Dreamscreen kickstarter... must cop.
*looks at white desk.... looks at RGB computer, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, RGB lamps, RGB strips......* oh... damn... WHATEVER I LOVE THE COLORS!!!
First, HOLY CRAP those lights look awesome! Second, filmed with an iPhone? That took me by surprise in a good way. Props dude!
"Please note that them sending the kit did not influence the opinion given in this review." How naive of you. Psychological literature show that getting stuff for free does indeed result in more positive evaluations, as multiple experimental studies have demonstrated.
What is a perfect distance between wall and tv (led strip) to perform best ambilight effect? What wall mount should I use for 65 tv? Slim or usual?
I'm sorry, I stopped watching after 2 minutes.. I just wanted to see how these 5 dollar ebay LED lights look like.. 😂
The analog nature of the LEDs on the analog strip is not technically assigned a value of 0-255 (8bit unsigned btw) they are controlled through PWM (pulse width modulation). PWM has an infinite range between 0-100% duty cycle. It is entirely up to the controller how many steps can can be assigned in that 0-100% duty width. Cheap controllers are 8bit and do in fact support 255 levels, however 16bit controllers are a thing and would support 65536 levels. It is unlikely you could hope to visual discern that many levels though. In any case you are spot on in your description of your signal traveling down the length of the strip.
Nice video, wish i could share with my HT group, but do to you using language in your video its against the group rules. Hope to see som more professional video i can share with the group.
Would not the analog strips black wire be the common ground and the RGB wires just be controlling the three terminals on the RGB LED?
Also regarding the Lightberry screengrabber device, be careful if you want to watch Netflix or Amazon HD video. Though I can't test it for sure myself I doubt it is HDCP compliant, which might cause issues using those services. DeV you should test it if/when you have a chance.
Nice effects and nice video on comparisons, but don't think I need $250 back lighting on my TV when I'm watching GOT ;) . Perhaps this is something flat screen manufacturers might incorporate in the future? Then I'm pretty sure the costs will come down 80%.
Regardless, I like your channel. Subscribed.
Is there anything proprietary about the lightberry kit? seems like $200-$300 is a bit much (IMO). I am a bit cautious when ordering from non-US sites (i.e. a .eu domain in this case). I get the effect and it does look cool and adds to the viewing experience. I could get the APA102 strip from amazon as well as the pi, and grab the software from the lightberry site. This would leave the HDMI grabber and the interface to connect the pi to the LED strip.
SVP software already handles ambient light, and the LightPack hardware that's used to support it is only $100.
Just fun FYI individual LED mapping (control) is also referred to as pixel mapping just incase you want to sound impressive.
You can get a meter of WS2812B RGB strips for a couple of bucks. Add in an Arduino Nano / Raspberry Pi Zero. DIY a script running on your PC that takes screenshots continually and sends them over to the Arduino / Raspi (e.g. Python /w mss). With this setup you could so the exact same thing for 20$.
Great video! Have you heard of a solution to work with the Samsung Connect boxes? They have some proprietary connector it seems (possibly optical? based on handling instructions)..no output in the combination box / switch that plugs directly into the TV. Lightberry would still work, but would be a pain to switch / jumper the HDMI connections each time you change inputs, also doesn't really help for the Smart TV Apps running on the tv itself. tired of googling today lol
Im dealing with a 42" TV and only found 2 companies that make 40" versions. I got a $70 40" sync box and it has no power switch on it, uses a phone app, needs my wifi password and also has a microphone installed on it for voice commands... i feel like its listening to me lol. I got another 40" sync box for $189 and its so much better. Has a power switch on the box, a normal LED remote with a power button, color buttons, different modes, the LED strip itself also has twice the amount of LEDs on it than the $70 brand.
Meanwhile, i have 2 27" 1080 60hz monitors (one ips with like 10ms response time), logitech k780 membrane wireless keyboard, logitech mx master, white ikea desk, white mouse pad, hydraulic dual monitor stand to keep the entire desk empty, and a fake ikea plant. and of course not a single rgb light anywhere to be found. 100/100 pc gaming setup.
The thing is that if I can get 15 meters of LEDs strips with an "average" quality for like 9€ from a good seller from aliexpress and a controller for 5€ (or a music controlled one for 10€) and get a PSU from my garage and light up my whole room I'm not going to spend 250€ on leds
I mean, they're fucking awesome but here atleast they are 50€ for 5 meters.
What benifits as this over say just buying a Phillips Amberlight TV. Obviously I wud have no night rider rainbow effects but I wud want to use this for watching movies only. And of course limited to choice of TV's buying a Phillips. Have u reviewed and Amberlight TV's??
Many thanks
This is not the smartest comparison you could do.
Check this amblone.com/
I built this years ago using the software and the instructions, its DIY stuff, like 30$ and it worked great. It works by scanning your screen and sending the RGB info to the arduino which then lights up the leds. Using the schematic of amblone I created a PCB for easy assembly, so even my friends could have fun. Its not as great as the 250$ stuff but 1000 times better than the 15$ stuff.
your cat is so relatable... I bought my cat a little house with a toy on it and she looked at me like "bitch... are you for real?? why would I go in a tiny house if I have your whole bed to myself"
Sorry mate, this is old tech! Phillips have made their TV's with "ambi" for several years. my Philips 49" was born with ambilight and it works like a charm, without any overpriced extra bulgy things. if someone wish for these features, just buy a Philips for a fraction of what you just gave ;-)
Couldn't you use an HDMI 2.0 active splitter to split separate HDMI feeds to your tv and Lightberry, rather than feeding the Lightberry's HDMI passthrough to your tv? Should get you 4k @ 60 Hz, and also ensure the tv and lightberry receive signal with the same latency.
Black is ground, not power.
Also it's 16 million colours, not 1.6 million
(16581375 to be precise)
I have a Dream Screen, it's cool, but I'm not sure it's worth the $200+ I paid for it... The biggest drawback to the Dream Screen is that it was already kind of outdated on the day of release, because it doesn't work with 4K programming. Well, maybe it does now, but it didn't when I bought mine last year...
It is not that I think the video was bad it is just that I want to point a couple of things out that are incorrect.
5050 is just the physical package type in which the leds come, it has nothing to do with digital or analog the WS2812B leds (really common good quality individually addressable leds) come in a 5050 package. Also the inputs are analog so there is no reason why you would be limited to a resolution of 0 - 255, your resolution is theoretically infinite even though most controllers are limited to that resolution.
Also a good tip for people who want good quality led strips and don't want to pay a lot. just look at good quality led strips and look what leds they are using, they oftenuse stuff like the WS2812B or the WS2813, just look these leds on places like aliexpress and banggood, you this way you can easely find an led strip with the quality of the expensive one for the price of a cheap chinese one.
"Every Tech RUclipsr has one of these.." ........
Boi. LinusTechTips has like 3 personal RGB lit up desks and he has a whole facking team with 50 Million LEDs as well. Done assume that they have just one. Jeez, it's 2017, get it together.
Neat gadget but way too expensive for normal people like to me to even consider it even though I can afford that. Want to buy RGBW strip with remote with app support, wifi alexa, google home controlled, decently priced
This seems less 'comparison' more 'lightberry ad' or 'lightberry review'. You didn't even try the $15 strip! Or get a cheaper strip that has some comparable features, such as individually addressable LEDs, which you can find for about $20.
I just wanted you to know I just watched all of your videos and I am thoroughly impressed. You are already one of my favorite tech RUclipsrs and I watch a LOT of them. You are like if Bobbie Burns had a love child with LTT; I like your script, or the way you weird things but you still give room for fun. Please keep it coming!
You're videos are so informative and entertaining to watch. I'm about the purchase the TLC from your last video. I've been saving up for a few months now since I watched your video. You convinced me to get it since I was already upgrading my 6yr old tv. I'm really interested in buying these LEDs too but sadly it's not piratically anytime soon for me. But I do like your mounting solution. I'm definitely gonna copy that.3
