NEVER BUY A GAMING LAPTOP FOR COLLEGE - Build a Desktop Instead!

I've had a few of my friends ask me to recommend them a laptop for school that'd be able to handle the games we play too, so I thought I'd make this video to explain why it's almost always a better idea to build a desktop for your gaming/creative work and grab a smaller less powerful laptop for your on the go work instead. Hope you like it! Feel free to pass this video along to any friends or family who might be about to make the mistake of buying a middle-ground gaming laptop!

Another perspective: To actually take your extremely expensive gaming laptop on the go with you around college can be a little bit like being a single mother college student with a baby. You've got to watch that thing like a hawk every damn second. I went the cheap laptop/luxurious desktop route through college, and by the end of it my laptop had had the absolute shit kicked out of it. Every corner was cracked, and every vile cafeteria fluid had been spilled on it. Then there will be days when your friends will want to go directly from class to the bars, and you'll have to be like, "nah man, I can't go, I've got my baby with me." And they'll say just leave it in the car, and you'll be like "leave my baby in a locked hot car, are you crazy??" So instead you've got to walk to the opposite end of campus to leave your baby in your dorm room with your stoner roommate who likes to leave the door wide open even when neither of you are there because "I don't believe in putting up walls, man." In short, unless you have a specific need to have that level of computing power with you at all times, the thing can be as much a burden as a luxury. I would sooner go back to pen and paper than carry around a top of the line gaming laptop with me every day. It's like owning a Ferrari but having to leave it parked outside all day in a shitty neighborhood. Even if nothing bad ever happens to it, you'll still be constantly stressed about it.

I have my 2009 laptop still, it has a broken corner and 2 keys out of it. Still works like a beast.
Plus i have no friends, so i do not care to go out. I would never spill water on my laptop, and care to it like my baby.
Im not gonna live in a dorm, one solution for the stealing thing would be a simple safe.

you see, the problem is that people think the only functions of portability is to travel or take it to college... what about taking it to your living room, lay down on your sofa and give your desk and chair a break while watching some tv? for me, that kind of thing that makes the portability so valuable. I've bought a desktop after selling my alienware and i regret it.

I have the Razerblade, and a 13' Macbook Pro 2015. You should know that these "laptops," aren't meant to be placed on pillows, or even your "lap" because it restricts airflow. When going to the living room, I still use the coffee table and places uncomfortable position. I'd rather use my mobile phone for that, and the desktop for my gaming and work. The Laptop is just used for class and word, excel etc.

    • @guiT39

I feel like a LOT of this has changed. As someone who is going to a laptop for my PhD (I love my desktop but it's a pain in the ass to move around) and I'm able to get an equal level of performance at a reasonable price. Couple that with the fact I need to be able to take my work in Unreal Engine to whatever conference/event I'm at, and the laptop is a good idea.
Don't get me wrong, I wish I could justify both, but that just isn't feasible if you're on a low budget.

this is coming from someone who has been only using a gaming laptop for 5 years
    gaming laptop Advantages:
    -you can take them anywhere
-fits in many places really easily
-it doesn't need any cables (for keyboard-only games) or outlets
    -the screen has more flexibility
.....that's really the only advantage I'm finding.
    Disadvantages:
    -it heats up much faster
-it's pretty heavy (for being portable)
-the performance is worse for a higher price
-you'll need a mouse to game on it anyway (that adds to the total)
-you cant upgrade it (so in a few years tll be harder to play new AAA games)
-the screen is attached to the PC (in a few years if the screen has dead pixels or broken you can't just buy a new one and leave it)
-you're stuck with the parts listed by the manufacturer. so you cant decrease costs by going with a lower end part
-it takes up way more room on your desk when gaming (with the mouse and everything)
    -the fan is louder
    -you have a worse connection
    -you have fewer ports
-if a part breaks you need to pay the expensive shipping (since its so heavy), wait much longer, and pay for the part replacement ---with the labour to fix it. then wait again to have back to you. instead, of just going on newegg, buying it, having less wait time for shipping and hooking it up, good to go
-you cant upgrade your smaller things like monitor and audio
it'll cost you more over time, with all the expenses added up
Laptop gaming isent a bad purchase, just be an informed consumer for the pros and cons for every expensive electronic you get. some of these are deal breaks and some are fine compromises, just find what matters for you.

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon Год назад

you can replace the screen pretty easily actually, where did you get "info" that you're stuck with it? Not to mention a desktop monitor.
"you're stuck with the parts listed by the manufacturer" so you can't upgrade RAM, storage, wifi? Connect external monitor, keyboard and speakers? hmmm okay
"-you have a worse connection" how? gaming laptops have ethernet port, but if you only have wifi in your home, how is desktop faster at connection?
"-you have fewer ports" it depends on a laptop. Legion 5 for instance has a crapton of ports, like 3 USB a and 3 type c ports.
"-you cant upgrade your smaller things like monitor and audio" LOLWHAT? why? have been using external monitors and speakers for laptops for years now and this is honestly news to me :D

Hey guys, a lot has changed since the release of this video. I've gathered as much criticism from these comments as possible and before you comment, here's an FAQ of my personal opinion on where we stand now.
*1. This video does not account for a mouse, keyboard, monitor, operating system, and more.*
You're right. I originally intended to expect people to already have a mouse/keyboard and even a monitor/TV to use, as many laptop gamers I know already use this. This was a silly oversight by me, _however_, this video's premise still stands. With the new components and the better builds mentioned above, you could easily shave 100-200 dollars off the cost of the build, leaving plenty of budget left to cover these. Also, if your school has Dreamspark, you can get OEM Windows for free! See if your school offers this.
*2. NVIDIA 10 Series cards and the RX480 were announced AFTER this video was posted.*
This video took me over two months to make. The announcement of these cards from NVIDIA and AMD make the build used in this video very financially nonsensical. Please check the description to a link to this video's Reddit thread on PCMR for a much better build guide.
*3. The new NVIDIA 10 series Pascal Laptop GPUs are desktop grade, isn't this video pointless now?*
No. While the new mobile GPUs are desktop equivalents made for small form factors, the price of these laptops have risen exponentially as a result. If power on the go was ever important to you, and money is no object, then yes, the new laptops are a better choice as noted at 3:01.
*4. Aren't eGPUs like the Razer Core a better solution?*
Not really. Unless you want to pay $500 for a box to put your new GPU in, you might as well have just built a desktop instead.
    *5. I don't want a Chromebook / My schoolwork requires Windows / etc.*
There are plenty of lighter Windows laptops since the release of Windows 10 cause Microsoft to not charge OEMs as much as they used to. In my honest opinion, ChromeOS is still much smoother for Windows and better for general schoolwork. Check your class requirements and decide for yaself. (Note to programmers, Chromebooks are basically native linux machines. Unless you're coding in Visual Studio, I think they're even worth a shot for you.)
*6. I travel alot and need the power on the go.*
    3:01
*7. I need powerful hardware for VMs and creative work in the classroom.*
    3:01
*8. ur a mac gaymer lol*
I don't play games on the Macbook, I play 'em on an i7 5820k | GTX980 rig I built last year. The intro was filmed on the custom rig as it's a hackintosh dual-booting OSX Yosemite and Windows 10.
I'll try to keep this list updated as I read through more comments. Hope this clears things up a bit!

Fool college kids want a laptop cause they've got nowhere to put a desktop, let alone travel a lot. I myself do have the space in my dorm for it, but most college dorms don't. Most of my friends dorming in other colleges have 2 beds, a nightstand(maybe) and a small desk for each in the corners, which is also their only space for writing. The freakin keyboard would take up all the space.

It all comes down to knowledge/time/resources. He's going to school for it so he has the knowledge and the resources. Anyone can make the time. But the fact that he's practicing to do things like this for the real world, he's applying himself to it right from the start, which is great. Most youtubers start as a hobby and slowly upgrade their quality as they go (from what I've seen anyways). It's the little things that make production quality superb, and his production is superb.

Regardless, with the new gaming laptops with 10 series nvidia graphics cards, performance is near desktop levels right now. Just get an ASUS GL502 with a GTX 1070 for $1700 and you are set.

for windows licence, if you're buying a laptop and building a desktop, then just use the key from the licence sticker on the laptop to install Win10 while Win10 upgrades are still free. If you don't have a OEM sticker on a device of your own, ask a friend if they can send you a photo of their OEM licence from their machine.

Frank Tirkey I spent 800 USD on my Lenovo ThinkPad T440p.
Unpopular route - I bought used, post leasing laptop in base configuration. I changed everything :
      - i5 to i7 quad core (i7-4900mq)
      - got 16 GB RAM
      - 720p screen to 1080p IPS display,
      - new keyboard from aliexpress with backlight,
      - new 9 cell battery from aliexpress,
      - 250 GB ssd,
      - 1 Tb HDD for storage,
      - I also added docking station so this powerhouse also doubles as workstation.
At first I was scared - no GPU in laptop? But now I could not be happier. The laptop has amazing battery - 4h of intensive work is perfectly doable. 6h of lighter work as well. The keyboard is incredible, just like ThinkPad laptops. Even with quad core i7, this 14 inch laptop fares with temperatures and noise pretty well. Perhaps lack on GPU is a good thing here.
14 inch 3kg laptop is also still quite light, especially compared to my good old 17 inch Dell 5737.
As for games - since I study and work, I do not really have an opportunity to play on the go. I play on desktop at home. Also the laptop can run older classic games, which are good alternative for me.

I think that's a good way to go about it, but I still think a lot of friends would prefer a powerful notebook because they either don't have a fixed place to work or it's outside of where they live, so they can't just, for example, build their desktop on campus.

Monitor? Keyboard? Mouse?? Windows??? Not to mention other things like a mousepad and ample space. College dorms are tiny. I have a "gaming" laptop and its perfect because it doesnt hog space. My desk has plenty of room left for textbooks and work. And I actually do game in my friends dorms fairly frequently. And I love not having to worry about managing files between the two. I know several people who left their assignment on their desktop and failed assignments. If you really think you can manage all that, then be my guest and split your budget. If you dont really care about marginal FPS gains, or play easier to run games such as OW and League, stick with the gaming laptops.

Did you even watch the video? First of all, mouse, keyboard and monitor are almost a one-time purchase. You don't upgrade your monitor, mouse or keyboard every time you build a new PC (not like a laptop). By the way, you will most likely buy a mouse for your laptop too, because who can do serious work on a track pad? Furthermore, most universities they give you a free Windows key. Even if they don't you can get cheap keys online. Or Linux is always an option. Now for the performance, you clearly didn't watch the video. It was clearly stated that the FPS gains were nearly triple. Lastly, you can't be serious about the space. Are you living in a 2x2m room? I believe all dorms have a desk. There, you have enough space for a PC.

    • @Zhus118
      @Zhus118 7 лет назад +2

Lukas "Melesh'as" K. yeah you could be right about the peripherals, but most college students would not have built a PC before and not have the monitors to spare. I currently have a gaming pc about $1,000 from Sam’s club that was on sale for emulators, steam gaming, Overwatch, college work, etc. it’s still working pretty well over a year later and has about 340 gb of space left before full, it’s good for the time being however, I’ve had to buy a cooling pad with three fans to keep it from over heating, I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a desktop from this but haven’t been sure where to start, this video has been great and helpful. Thank you!

Reading the comments, the people that call you stupid are stupid. I'm an electrical engineering student that uses a Asus Chromebook sporting an Intel Celeron with 4 GB RAM ($129) and a Dell XPS 9100 i7-6700 GTX 750Ti (not as good as the one in the video but good enough for me) 16GB RAM ($750) and am perfectly fine. I hacked the Chromebook to run Linux Ubuntu and can run all the simple things I need in class to get through the day.
Never have I ever taken a class that required us to program on our own laptops in class, that's weird. We're always in a computer lab. But, that aside, most of the programming software we use run fine on Linux.
For my first year I carried around a i7-4700HQ with 16GB RAM but that fell short of any power I actually needed, not to mention how dangerous it was to carry my $1250 laptop around. This new i7-6700 desktop is more secure and is SO much faster. He's right, I don't use any power outside of my dorm room. I found myself docking my laptop in my room whenever I started writing code and using the core intensive testbenches.
Also, most people don't understand that the mobile counterparts are ridiculously slower than the full power ones. A LOT SLOWER.

Brian Chung really? I have a dual 27in IPS LED display setup on my desk so I would say my table is substantially big enough for a keyboard. And I use a medium sized keyboard, meaning it has all the function keys embedded into the number pad. To be specific, I have the cooler Master QuickFire TK Blue keyboard in the medium form factor. Nice little keyboard and it's cheap too. Plus whenever I docked my laptop it got too hot for its own good so I have a keyboard and a mouse anyway.

I must mention that "laptops are a lot slower compared to their desktop counterparts" thing isn't a thing anymore, it's history. Last year nvidia released 980M with exact specs of the desktop variant of 980 and this year they released 10x cards which are overall better but have lower clock speeds which equals same performance as desktop 10x cards. Previously we saw 900-series M cards being only about 10% slower compared to their desktop counterparts.

I guess an excuse for getting a gaming laptop for even high school would be "My desktop is too old to even do the stuff that I need it to do properly. It would be better to just replace it with a laptop that can probably do twice as much, and just keep the old thing on my desk, gathering dust, and probably not going to use it for anything but backups and in case of viruses on the laptop."

Keyboard : 42$, mechanical. Mouse is 10$, better than touch pad. If you pay mouse for laptop, then the price go up which you can buy a good mouse. So mouse is 10$. Monitor, Lg 25 in ultrawide monitor 160$.
A chromebook is 130$. Keep in mind that you can build a 620$ pc more powerful than a 1000$ laptop.
      pcpartpicker.com/list/dPWq8K
Here, 612$, G4560 but rx 570, sleeved cable, s340 case, and a good 20$ cpu cooler.
Now everything i said start to make sense ?
Some people use laptop with a monitor at home which saves 160$, boom. Corsair strafe rgb, corsair glaive and corsair extended mouse pad.

    • @mikfhan
      @mikfhan 7 лет назад

Consider that a gaming laptop would encourage you to buy a keyboard/mouse/monitor if you don't have them already, to preserve your sanity when gaming or working from home.
So they would be included in both the gaming laptop budget and the schoolbook/desktop budget anyway. Gaming without a good monitor will torture your neck and eyes over time.
Of course, if you know you will need gaming performance on the go, this whole video is irrelevant to you anyway. Might even consider an ITX-Mini "desktop" to fit in your schoolbag.

I've personally never experienced that problem, as I'm not a horny bastard 24/7. I definitely prefer coding on a desktop PC, although that's only because I have dual monitors and I prefer the keyboard not being directly attached to the monitor(s).

Unless you're rendering 3D animations, compiling a game or breaking down games in class (like me), his points are spot on. Sometimes I wish the campus would provide high-end PCs for these uses.

To be honest, laptops are just bad. Fell for the trick of Lenovo Gaming laptop 4 years ago, when I was inexperienced. Just recently built my first ever desktop, felt great and cost was affordable for top end specs.
Also...quick warning to anyone buying a laptops or building/buying a computer in general. NEVER EVER BUY A 5400 RPM Harddrive, that is what cause's computers to slowdown considerably after the first 1 week. Whoever designed the 5400 RPM hardrive is honestly a fuckboy that was after money.

My Lenovo laptop that originally cost over $1000 does ok on CSGO, but anything more lags too hard to do much. I'm building a desktop this summer if I can scrape a few hundred dollars together.

You spend 2-3k every three years from laptop to laptop with a laptop saying "This one is actually going to last". They doubled the performance from the 800 one to the 900 line, making 8- ones unsusable. They quadrupled the performance with 9 to 10 series. Guess what will happen to your 10xx laptop when they upgrade to the 11xx line? The people with a desktop literally have to buy a new GPU and boom, new graphics, because you literally can run a 1080 with a three or four year old CPU and RAM without bottlenecking it.

It's not spoiled if he's going to college. Having a high budget isn't spoiled and money, wealth ≠ spoiled sounds to me like you don't have a lot of money yourself me neither but I never hate on the wealthier just because they have more money.

Wow, you know, I've been looking at buying a gaming laptop in fall for months now, and I even considered building a rig instead, but this video really just pushed it into my mind how obvious it is that building a desktop is the much better option. Thank you for this insight, you've probably saved me thousands of dollars.
