Yeah you are totally right. I dont usually drive that fast and I dont take highways too often though. 90% of my driving is local, under 65. I bet the losses would be much larger at fast, highway speeds.
James Klafehn I’ll report back what I find now that I have removed mine (today actually). My mpg in HV only mode was like 35-36 on the highway and all I can chalk that up to is the roof rack.
First of all, you are part of the reason why I’m getting a red prime too! I’m paying more for the color but I’m doing this under a ownership! Little different from you, but I appreciate everything. I’m getting one in a few weeks, post what you can in the meantime so I can get a better understanding on shit. Keep it up bro!
That's is about a 3.5% drop in MPG. Since air resistance is proportional to the square of the speed, this loss will much greater at higher speeds. So here - if you doubled your average speed - you would quadruple the resistance and get about a 14% drop in MPG. That is a lot.
Thanks for the info! I know it would be much worse at higher speeds. I only drive on highways maybe 10% of my miles. Maybe. a little more. If I dont need the rack for the highway trip I could remove it. When driving locally I barely notice the losses and I have a basket up there now.
Hugely helpful James, thanks! I'm planning to get rails for my RAV and had this exact question as I've heard horror stories about roof racks and EV range. Obviously that's without anything mounted to the rails (I plan to use a skybox for long trips which will likely kill my range) but it's good to know I won't have to constantly take them off to reclaim my efficiency!
Happy to help. So far loss has been extremely low. I have been driving around with a Harbor Freight cargo box on the car for a week. I used to average around 3.1m per kwh. I am doing around 2.8 now. Loss is much lower than I thought. Video about the basket coming soon.
Your videos are very interesting! Is this possible that you prepare a video that would coach us how to program a garage door opening system with the built-in remote of the car...
The SE doesnt have remote garage door openers. YOu need an XSE for those. You might also need the premium package. I dont remember. I have thought about adding the Homeline mirror to this car. I might someday.
Your videos are very usefull....particularly with the pandemy....I am the next one who will be getting my XSE -tech package / red that my dealer will be receiving...(God knows when!). Nevertheless, I am not sure that I will get a deep road review. From my salesman....Everything I learn from your videos are very valuable! Many thanks!
I don't carry anything on my roof and the OEM crossbars are a poor design for actual cargo hauling. Besides the front crossbar is right in the middle of the sunroof. Lame design.
It’s a lot worse at 70-80mph highway speeds

@@fieldy502 Why did you remove yours?
James Klafehn because I was suspecting the drag on fuel economy and I’m doing a 2500 mile RT road trip in a couple weeks
Also at high speeds the noise was getting annoying

How far apart are the rails (centre to centre) and how wide are the rails?
I'm wondering if those racks can carry 7ft scaffolding????
Can you post a photo of the car and what it looks like with the rails.... Ya kinda missed showing that.
Sorry about that. Ill include photos in the second video. I am making a video about the basket install. Should be out soon.

12 nM on one bolt on each side for each rack, is that right?

Wondering how long it takes to remove them after being installed and then how long to reinstall?
Not long at all. Maybe 5 minutes if you have the tools.
I got some roof racks for 90 dollars and are exactly the same thing, aftermarket but exactly exactly the same
Yeah I couldve looked for aftermarket ones. Oh well. I got the oem Toyota bars for only $215 which is a good price.
Really?! Could you please share the address or website where you got them. Thank you
@@MohammadMasadeh76 it’s in Mexico Bro, I don’t think it will work for you
I just removed mine due to the wind noise…
Really? I didnt think the wind noise was bad at all.

And a surprising amount of wind noise!
