Panerai Luminor Due PAM 676: How An Italian Watch Became A Swiss Icon

  • What do Sylvester Stallone, delicious Italian food, legendary chefs, the story of horology, and the world’s most infamous combat divers of World War II all have in common?
    Today we find out!
After numerous requests from the good Gentry, in this video I finally return to the luxury watch brand Panerai with an in-depth review of their Luminor "Due" PAM 676. In the early days of The Urban Gentry channel, I reviewed a Panerai Radiomir and discussed its rich and illustrious history. This is something I especially relate to, having lived and studied in Florence, the city where the brand was founded. Unfortunately, that video had to be made private, for reasons I share here today. To make up for that, I decided to revisit this massively important watchmaker with a special episode shot in the equally iconic Italian Market in Philadelphia.
Ultimately I try to understand how a diving tool from Italy that was created for some of the world’s most daring divers in the Italian Royal Navy, became a Swiss made, luxury status watch. Is it all hype or does the soul of the brand still live on into the 21st century? Let’s dive into this fascinating story to find out!

The fact you deleted a video you worked hard to produce to preserve your and your channel's integrity is very admirable and demonstrates good character which I applaud. I think you could wear a watch like this, especially because it is a Panerai. The lugs don't protrude beyond your wrist width. As for the 30m water resistance... it doesn't matter -- that particular model is more of a dress/casual watch than anything else. It is really a very stylish watch, I would not mind at all wearing such a piece. I think they made a wise move, open an entirely new market. First of all you wrong about the Due category, Luminor Due is generally a DRESS WATCH category that's why they make it just only 10.5mm thickness but still with their DNA of luminor of that handsome crown guard with a historical 1950 case design, Slim, Elegant, luxurious, is all about in Due category that also mention by their CEO. Is not a tools watch or dive watch, Second Who's care about the water rating nowadays, that's something we can't get to see or even get to use it, I don't think most people will still use these kind of luxury item put into watch for use like a gshock, when I'm going to diving school today's, all the people is worn will those digital professional diving watch with all the features that really needs. Luxury watch water resistant is something you don't really get to use because that is a luxury watch dude.

The 30m of water resistance is not only embarrassing but for many marks the absolute decline of the brand. It's like in the future if someone buys a book for the novelty to factor and then opens it up only to greeted by gibberish instead of an actual novel. The idea is that you are buying it for its looks and the function is just an outdated aspect.
I agree that the sizes are huge but that watch doesn't look out of place on your wrist. A Panerai is supposed to big and the smaller dimensions make it look like a proper big watch for someone with a small wrist like yourself. It wears much like a 44mm Panerai would wear on an average wrist.

It actually looked rather elegant. However, like everybody else I find 30m water resistance underwhelming, to me the low water resistance somewhat undermines the brand, once you learn about their amazing heritage. It’s as if Ferrari made a car that could not go on a race track. Nonetheless, a brilliant video, as usual, and a beautiful watch.

Keep the Gentry going just the way it is. All the best T.

The food is making me really hungry also.Really enjoyd the history of the watch. Extremely entertaining. I am going on eBay and ordering the Parnis look alike right now.Wish I could afford a real one,But I own fifty entry-level watches and enjoy them all. For all you low budget guys like me check out the Parnis. Sorry GTV, The video and the watch are total class, but I have to watch out for my blue-collar buddies. Keep up the good work and God bless you!

I wouldn't say it's "far too big for your wrist" as you suggest. It's a Panerai, "big" comes with the territory. I just picked up a 44mm Luminor 773 last week and it fits just fine on my flat 17cm wrist. Works well at the office too in business attire. Took me 14 years of collecting to come around to Panerai but I'm officially hooked to their clean designs.
I was excited about the Due when launched but 30m WR is embarrassing from Panerai to be honest.

WRONG...The Panerai Due is a DRESS WATCH with Panerai design cues....it was never advertised as a diver... A Breitling Navitimer, which is a sports watch, has a WR of 30m....so does Patek and other dress watches... even AP have 20m WR for their dress watches (Jules Audemars).. There is no issue here.

It all depends on what your use too, and what size you are. I'm trying to come to terms with 45mm and trying to convince myself that it's not too small. I'm 6.2 and 230lbs with a 7 inch wrist and if I put one of my 40mm watches on that I use to use when I was a kid , (80's ) it looks like a kids watch on me. I just couldn't go back to that size of 40 or 42mm but it looks good on you. It fills your wrist without looking stupid like when I wear my 55mm Aragon Gage on my wrist. I love the giant soup can but it is just too big for me. But I know a few guys that a 55mm would look fine, but then there is this guy I know that's "way" bigger than me and he bought a 40mm Invicta pro diver and I just don't have the heart to tell him he should go to at least a 47mm grand diver cause a 40mm doesn't look right on his baseball bat wrist. When I slowly started to go up in size It took a wile but then you get use to feeling a bigger watch on your wrist and after a few years you'll try to go back and wear some of the watches that you archived and you'll be shocked at how much you love the look of the watch design but it just looks small and feminine....... Since you look normal with a 42mm It would be the same thing if you started wearing a 32 or a 34mm. it would not seem right . especially when you would catch a glimpse of your self in a mirror, cause that gives you a view of what you look like to others and at a different angle . This video was great, so watch it over and over and you'll see that you are nailing that size. just give it a chance and you'll see that you will come to know the dark side of the force. bigger is better. You said you wished it was a 39mm.... come on ! every guy needs an extra 3mm. :)

Good evening TGV, I like the Rocky reference at the start of the vid, with Sly and his connection with Panerei today. First I recognized Panerei on the wrist of Jason Statham in the first scene in The Transporter, where the watch gives an alarm (which of course was made up for the movie). You're a quite lucky chap, having lived in Florence. On of my favourite parts of Italy (Milan and the area around Lago di Como being the others. I like the Rolex / Panerei Collection.

Great clip! Refreshing to see a video from a knowledgeable Rolex lover that is actually not bashing the brand but loving it! I never understood the bashing. I love Rolex but I also love Panerai's history and timepieces. And to all those whining about the "30"' mtrs...guess what ,mine actually says 300 mtrs and I don't dive (anymore). By the way most scuba divers don't go deeper than 30 to 40 mtrs. There are 300 mtr watches in the Panerai collection so I never understood why everyone's so upset about it. Cheers!

As a massive Panerai fan, I am so glad to see TGV do a Panerai video, but this watch is a non-starter. That iconic crown guard on a 30m water resistant watch is preposterous. They're expensive watches, it cannot have been that cost prohibitive to give it proper water resistance (100m) and still make it thin. My Pam 183 is 13mm thick, I bet they could definitely slice 3mm out and still keep the water resistance, 100m isn't really that much. Unless it's a Mare Nostrum, it needs a least 100m of water resistance.
Great video though, TGV! Hope to see more Panerai in the future.

I really like the way you introduce us to the charms of Philly as you introduce us to a new watch. Philly definitely has a lot of charm to offer.
Panerai watches are definitely an acquired taste. I am not a fan of the Luminor line; I do not like the crown guard, it throws the proportions out of whack in my estimation. But as you pointed out, functionally it is unique in zeroing out the second hand. I much prefer the Radiomir line, especially PAM00790 and 791. These are some elegant and timeless watch case designs.
Keep up the good work in Philly - you won't run out of material to share.

I have tried this watch and it truly is beautiful and at 42mm due to the design the size is not overwhelming even for a 15-16cm wrist. However the fact that it is Panerai and it has Luminor like crown lock and in the end only a 3ATM water resistance is a deal breaker to me. Maybe if it had Radiomir case without crown lock and at least 5ATM water resistance (Sinn has 10ATM water resistance on its 9,7mm thick dress watch) I might be able to swallow it, but like this, no thank you.

Great video sir. Fantastic to see you out and about in the markets and as always incredibly informative about the brand. I'm not one who places too much emphasis on water resistance as for the most part unless you plan on swimming or showering in it, it really doesn't matter.
