Missing Teen Sends Letter to Mom 5 Years Later, Revealing She’s Still Alive

- Prayers were finally answered for the family of a teenager who has been missing for the last five years. Emily Paul was just 14 when she vanished from her home outside Tallahassee, Florida, in 2013. She recently sent her family a letter telling them she was alive and well but would not reveal her whereabouts. Her cousin, Melissa Parker, told Inside Edition the family “never gave up hope.” “She's alive, that is the best thing that could have possibly happened,” Parker added. #InsideEdition
Either she had a horrific home life she doesn't want to go back to or she is under someone's control. Too many loose ends.
Agree
Or just a typical little Emo kid who ran away to drugs got pregnant on welfare and wants to be left alone
I agree
Either her family was awful or she's been brain washed. I can't see a 14 year old not reaching out until now only to say I'm here but leave me alone. 19 is consenting but to what?
She didn’t even explain what happened to her during those 5 years
I find it interesting how the mom isn’t the one doing the talking, but a cousin is… biggest red flag of them all, sounds like the girl made the right choice.
mhm
Maybe they're dead too 🤷♀️ ynk
Maybe the mom is so heartbroken she did not want to be videotaped.
I don’t know, she waited till she was 19yrs old to come forward. Sounds like she is involved with a man and I she had of come forward when she was a minor, he would of went to prison, she is protecting him. When a girl/woman make a statement I’m happy, it’s a guy (“happy” in her situation).
GOD ITS LIKE YOU READ MY MIND. Great minds think alike 😊
Her cousin is clearly okay with this because she probably knew more on why she left.

She may have even helped her get away to a safer place.
Might have been her uncle

I'm sorry you have such a crappy mom. I have a borderline mother so I can somewhat relate but I think my mom would look for me even though I don't think she loves me the way a mom should. I hope that if one day you have children, you give them everything your mom didn't give you and your kids will always want to be with you. May God bless and heal you.

She was probably kidnaped

The fact that the cousin is there doing the interview, and not the mother and immediate family, speaks volumes. Clearly, there’s a lot more to the story than just “a teen ran away from home.”
When I was 18, I moved outta my mother’s apartment and joined the military, and haven’t talked to her since. That was in 2001. I completely understand this woman not wanting her family to know where she now lives, even if I don’t know the full story of why.
Nope. That's it.
Well idk the story but it could also be that she just doesn’t want to be on camera I mean I wouldn’t want to either
her pictures with them says otherwise though.. If she was my sister and there was no reason for her to run away, I wouldn't bother with her anymore..
Sorry to hear that. I can’t imagine being that young and having no immediate family to support you. Without being too nosy, did your mother ever try to reconcile with you and apologize for past problems?
@@roems6396 She’s tried to talk to me, but has never apologized for her actions. She doesn’t think she’s done anything wrong, from what I can tell. I won’t go into detail, but all I will say is that a parent is supposed to love and provide for their children. Any “parent” that does anything besides that is wrong.
Maybe she was being abused by someone in the family and didn't want anyone to know she was alive until she was old enough to not get sent back.
True I would’ve done that in this situation
I wouldn't run away I would see someone who can deal with the issue

Exactly. Either her home life was really bad for her to just up and leave like that without leaving as much as note or anything, or she did leave not under her own free will and was made to go to the station and say she was ok under duress. A hypothetical kidnapper had all that time to traumatize/brainwash/threaten her. I hope the officer who interviewed her at least asked for her current location and looked into her social-economic status/situation to see if she had like a job, spouse, friends, home, etc to make sure she was telling the truth.

@@cat54mom oh right, i totally see what you mean. yes, that’s very understandable.

That's what I immediately thought too. I know how hard it is to get away from an abusive and controlling home life only to have your abusive parents trying to use the law to hunt you down. Pretty typical to have a nonthreatening family member reach out to try and make you feel guilty for leaving. My parents tried through my brother and various aunts and uncles but I left at 17 and never looked back. I'm 40 now and have made my own family and don't regret a thing about leaving home as a teen.

As a former runaway. There’s got to be more to this story. A reason behind why she doesn’t want her family to know her whereabouts. Sadly the way it comes off, she probably went thru some type of abuse and she was brave enough to get away from it. Something most kids can’t do.
Yeah I think that she probably escaped from abuse and is hopefully living somewhere safe now.
i agree
@Kyle Cameron My sister did the same as you at 16. Ran away and moved in with older kids to party and drink and do drugs. My mom wasn't even controlling. She just wanted what any parent wants, and that's for their kid to stay in school and do good. If a kid runs away, it's not always because their a nasty abuser.
Maybe...hmmm...there has to be more to this story
Possibly but I doubt it
She said she didn't want her family to know her whereabouts; that doesn't mean the cops didn't follow up and investigate.
I’m hoping the cops didn’t just take her statement to them at face value. Surely, they asked for more detail from her; with the assurance they wouldn’t release her reasons/living situation to the public.
I mean ultimately if someone walks into a police station and says I am happy and safe and don’t want my family to know my whereabouts, there is little the police can do.
Ya, probably to protect them from her kidnappers. Her eyes tell everything if you look closely. She is not happy & looks completely broken in that picture w/the dog
@@cubemissy Unfortantly some cops do. I had a friend that was being controlled by her boyfriend. When the cops couldn't do a home welfare check they asked her to come to the police station. She went in singing her boyfriend's praises and saying everything was perfectly fine. Two days later he beat her to death and ran. It took another week for cops to find her when they did a house welfare check when her family didn't hear from her.
of course
She doesn’t want them to know for a reason
Being held hostage and maybe Stockholm syndrome or horrible childhood
Thx for the likes.
I agree with Stockholm, she was possibly held captive during the most hormonal years of her life with presumably no social interaction.
But, why would she get in touch with her family? If she was under someone's control, why would she walk into a police station ALONE and tell the detective that she's happy and safe? If she was being held, her letter would have been more like a ransom note. She didn't ask for anything. In fact, she asked that they stay away. @@MassMeme Technically. But being kidnapped out of a worse situation is usually preferable. This seems like it was worse. I ran away from trafficking as a teenager and those people could 100% have been charged with harboring a minor, if you were going off just what they were technically doing.
This worries me. I seen a documentary of a man & his wife who kept a girl captive for years, but they entirely brainwashed her. Years later they let her go see her family, but had her convinced they were watching her & if she told them anything out of the way then they would kill her entire family. (Which wasn't true but she believed it after being brainwashed) So she made up a lie that she was happy with her life & just didn't want anyone to know where she lives. I'd hire a private investigator, just to be sure. 😕 so hope that isn't this case
@@audreyfurmage3665 I totally agree especially considering the fact that she doesn't want her family knowing her whereabouts. Honestly, there's something fishy about that.
Most teenagers whether they were kidnapped or however they vanished; once they call their family, most kids whether adult or not would be willing and want to reconnect with their family where they'd either take a plane or road trip home (depending on where she is currently living and how far it is)...but they wouldn't hide there whereabouts from family unless they were in danger meaning whoever this girl might be with could be controlling her. She probably doesn't have the freedom to be able to fly home no matter how much she may want and he/she could be threatening her. There could be a chance that whoever she is with allowed her to write a letter to her mother and allowed to come forward at a police station, but could have threatened her that they would kill her if she told her family where she was living and who she was living with.

Does this story not sound like a sketchy case for the family? Emily was 14 when she left and suddenly showed up at the age of being an adult? Sounds somewhat planned, and with the fact she doesn’t want her family to see her even now sounds even more strange. I have two conspiracy’s:
1. Either Emily’s family or family member had been abusing or in some way hurting Emily. ( you don’t run away at age 14 for 5 years unless the reason had to be serious). She ran away to hide from them until she was an adult so no one had guardianship over her anymore.
2. Or. Emily was kidnapped or forced to leave at 14. So he/she waited until Emily was an adult and could legally make her own decisions. Thus being forced to stay with he/she without anyone searching anymore.
Either way the fact she waited until now to show up at the legal age and doesn’t want anything to do with her family sounds completely non ironic and more planned.

bro i was just about to say "what if she was abused?" or "what if someone is holding her captive" until i read the comment section. the detective really needs to up his game seriously.
@MissDroplette yeah true. it's not our problem so we shouldn't worry about it
@MissDroplette i dont know American law but in my country child abuse is a crime per se , no need to have the victim presse charges. In fact not reporting it is a felony
@@matthew-lq3fh that’s not what she’s saying. What she’s saying is that since the lady is a grown adult now, the detectives can’t investigate her without her consent
@MissDroplette unless it was sexual abuse, there’s a four year statute of limitations
There's gotta be sooo much more to this story
If she was kidnapped at 14 lives with kidnapper for 5 years. Wouldn’t she have Stockholm syndrome. And need help.
Unless she ran away willing due to abusive family
Stockholm Syndrome doesn’t always happen. I’ve heard that there’s a genetic component to which people would be more or less likely to develop Stockholm Syndrome
Exactly!!!
The little red haired girl from across the street wow that’s neat.
I think it’s most likely that she ran of her own free will
I wonder if she was forced to write the letter. It may not be all what it seems.
She ran away because she was lesbian and her family was not accepting of that since they were religious.

Why is nobody talking about the obvious: her family was terrible to her, so she ran away.
It's pretty simple.
@frank time that doesn't exclude her family being terrible. Actually helps your theory if her family treated her badly.
Oh, you're young.
Obvious to you may be because you've been abused by your own family; not so obvious to others who haven't lived that torment. If she truly wanted to put her family behind her, I don't think she would have came out of the wood work.
Not always, most of the time it's much more complicated than that
That’s just A assumption.

MuffinREpic thank you ...
it just seems quite sketchy in general. girl disappears for 5 years, no one has reported seeing her or anything, and out of the blue a letter is randomly sent saying that she’s fine and just left it at that and states that she doesn’t want her mom to know where she’s located
Why is she acting as if it’s normal for a girl who was missing for FIVE YEARS! To just want to stay god knows where it’s just for a mom who’s missing a child for five years she way too calm if I got this letter after waiting five years I would be balling my eyes out looking for something to find her
Edit: thanks for the likes 😌💛🖤💛
That wasn't her mom in the interview. I'm going to guess she was possibly molested by a family member and wasn't believed by her parents.
@@LoriCrabtree31that's pretty much the ultimate betrayal.

Obviously if she doesn’t want to come home, it’s for a reason. I’m sure her parents aren’t as good as their claiming to be.
I doubt she’s being held captive, if she was she would’ve stayed at the police station. She was probably being abused at home and ran away, and still doesn’t want to go back
She could be being made to write the letter, but given the mom didn’t bat an eye, yeah probably ran away on her own (or found a dodgy service. Those do exist. Dunno which route she took)
obviously? Obviously not, a detective worked on the case for 5 years, and she didnt tell them because she easily couldve have told the police it, obviously its not her parents and shes just a emo or its someone outside of her family
Here is another theory. She is just a selfish girl who left her family just because she wanted to live with freedom. A lot of teens run away from home just because of that reason.
either that or maybe she met up with someone who was already an adult when she was a teen and cant disclose where and who shes with because he could go to jail-
We're definitely missing something from this story. 😕
I suspect she ran away with an older man and been with him ever since
Yes. My mom was pregnant with me when she was 14, ran off with my dad (he was 21). She didn't contact anyone in her family for almost a decade.

She got private time with a detective. If she was really in danger she probably would have told him then and there.
"The kidnapper made her *say/write* ". He could have threatened her to say that or else he would kill her or something so she was afraid and did as she was told.

This story sounds fishy. Why would she run away from home? We're her family abusive? Did she runaway with someone? The police should continue investigating this case cuz it doesn't sound normal. I have a feeling that cousin helped her leave that home. Knowing she doesn't want her family to know her whereabouts definitely says something. Something really off about this... Emily clearly doesn't want to contact her parents directly, her cousin is oddly perfectly fine not being able to see her and stuff. This is filled with red flags like was she kidnapped and being held against her will? Was the family abusing her? This is really odd.
ik like I was wondering why tf her cousin was doing all the talking and not the mother.
I don't find it that odd. Her parents may have been too strict.
Most definately the family, not even her parents came to talk, isn't that a massive red flag?
omg silly thinking too much odd
Yeah, she was never kidnapped and held against her will. She ran away and stayed with someone for years so that's a huge red flag that there were issues going on at home. Now what exactly those issues were I've no idea as she's never stated anything about why she took off. Could be a lot of mental, emotional, physical abuse or all of the above.
Sounds like there's something major and unforgivable that the cousin doesn't know about. It's telling that they didn't interview Mom they interviewed the cousin.
