When my granny died , I’d been telling her pa was waiting for her that he was tending to his roses and waiting. She was suffering and I new she didn’t want to leave us. She passed a few minutes later and the room filled up with the smell of roses. Then the smell was gone quick as it came. Was a comfort to know he came and got her. Enjoyed this chapter!

My family had reunions in June which was my Great Grandma Jennie's birth month. There were so many people and so much food. She lived to be 92. I was probably about 8 when she died. This was in the 60s. She was bedridden for 20 years. My grandma (her only child) waited on her and managed to raise 7 children. My mom was next to oldest. Love listening to these stories!

It's 0256 in the morning. Bright moon. Clear skies. A multitude of stars and a few planets. Sitting in the hot tub, listening to your reading. Simply wonderful. Being from Ohio I grew up knowing many Appalachian folks who migrated north for factory work. I was attracted to those folks, much to my mother's dismay. She being a daughter of German Lutgeran immigrants called them "hillbillies". Nevertheless I still relish memories of those folks. I remember my paternal grandfather calling my grandmother's step mother's kids her"hillbilly relatives". Oh well, they were a point of joy and laughter in my life in the 1950s. Bless you Tipper.

My grandparents didn't share much about their lives. I believe because of the hard times they grew up in. Then the Depression being so long and hard to survive. Poppy worked for the local phone company as a lineman (after mining coal and I don't know what else). He was too young for WW1
and too old for WW2. So I really enjoy your stories and those you read as history lessons. I'm 76 and have quite a few stories of my own to pass on or not as I feel is appropriate. I'm the senior member of my small family. No reunions or gatherings as we live close but rarely see each other. Sad isn't it?.
Like others who leave notes. I really enjoy your family life. Cooking, gardening. the wedding, etc. Keep
us informed. Love your blog and videos. Thanks muchly.

Tipper I just love these tales of Appalachia. Even though I was born and raised in California, I’ve had a special place for the people of Appalachia. Think it got started about the 5th grade when I started reading books about a nurse who rode on horseback to get back into the hollers where people needed medical attention. Don’t even remember the name of the series. Of course I was horse crazy then too but thought that would be the perfect job. Now that I live in East Tennessee and can look out over the mountains I often wonder how different my life would have been had I followed my “dream”. So interesting to find out how real life was back then. Thanks for all you do! ❤️

Bonnie, was the book called “Mary on Horseback”? It tells the story of Mary Breckinridge, I can’t recall the author’s name, I believe her last name was Wells, maybe? I remember reading this book in grade school in the mid-late 70’s.

There are also ones about the library women doing the same thing. You would both probably love reading them. Book woman of troublesome creek is the title. Hope you get and enjoy.

I took care of my Gma (born in 1907) from age 99 til she passed one monrh shy of 103. She was the oldest of 8 children and your story of having to take care of siblings reminded me of Gma swearing that she believed the reason her hips were uneven was because her entire young life was spent carrying one sibling or the next on her hip. What you are doing with your channel is so ...I don't know if I have words for it but it's like...nope, there just aren't words. Special and full of love just doesn't cover it. It makes me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder just writing simple books about her life but then being remembered and loved for generations. That's what I feel when I think of you. You're creating what will become a treasured legacy for generations to come.

You have such a rich and beautiful perspective that I love hearing you talk about it as much as the book you are reading. I think of my Grandmother as you read because that was her life. Then I would transport the people to the morgue for themselves to be comfortable in away !!! Hardest was the babies but would sing to them !!! Mary had a Little Lamb or Jack and Jill went up the Hill !!! Sat in the burn unit with others for comfort !!! ANY THING TO HELP THEM GO THROUGH the pain that they had when the skin was being taken on off of them !!! It was hard work but what if you had to go through it that is what I thought of !!!

I believe sometimes people that are dying actually see those who have died before them. It is a common occurrence that I believe is natural and is comforting to them. If you are ever in the situation where someone that is dying sees someone while you are there, you should remain quiet and not interfere.

Maybe if I had time, I could maybe figure them out! I remember when we would go to see my Grandparents in North Carolina! My Granddaddy was a mechanic. He had his own shop. Well the bootleggers would pay my Granddaddy good money to make their cars go fast to outrun the sheriff! So the Sheriff would go see my Granddaddy at his shop! The Sheriff would tell my Granddaddy, Jumper I know you made their cars go fast. So my Granddaddy would have to fix the police car to go fast to catch the bootleggers 🤣🤣! When I was little, my older brother used to ask me the riddle about, "If you're paddling in a canoe and a wheel falls off, how many pancakes does it take to shingle a dog house?" It drove me insane! LOL
My Dad's Mother was a big jokester and she always had funny little sayings that she used. When I'd go to see her she might say, "How are ye, Sassafras?" or "I look like the warpin' ends of windy weather." She told us about Raw Head and Bloody Bones and lots of other tales. She made them seem real. She liked to laugh. Her family was of Scots-Irish and Cherokee descent. I always thought the Scots-Irish influenced our story-telling and sense of humor.
Mom's Dad had a good sense of humor. He worked in the coal mines and once there was a big fuss with people trying to organize the Union at the mines. One morning before their shift started his co-workers said to him, "Denver, tell us a good tale before we start." He said, "Boys, some of the big wigs were here yesterday and they sent a man home (fired him) for loafing....we'd better just get to work." At the end of the shift the men asked him who'd gotten fired...they'd asked around and nobody knew anything about it. He said, "Well boys, you said to tell you a big tale...." (he'd made it up) LOL
He also poked fun at my Grandma. Once she'd gotten hold of some free paint. She went on a painting spree. He said to visiting company, "Yes, Carrie's painted everything but the cat's a$$." LOL He was something else.
I love a good sense of humor.

Tipper, the two Men were sent from heaven or from God to help familiarize him to them so when his time came they'd escort him to the other side. I posted a video that I talked about 'the angel of death ' and my experiences with working with hospice patients. This is a common thing that occurs, they'll see someone a few days before it's their time to go. And some also see and even talk to their loved ones that have passed before so when they do go, they're excited to see them and be with them again, and it eases their transition. I spoke with my Daddy about that before he died and we both thought that it was kinda wonderful that God did that for us at the end of our lives. My Dad told me once that after his heart and lung surgery (at age 79) he thought he was going to die and hurt so bad he was ready to, and he walked dragging his rolling IV stand, down a long hallway with lots of doors and when he got to the end he said he was tuckered out. He said that a guy was standing at the end of the hallway and he told my Dad to turn around and go back, that it wasn't time yet... And the reason my Dad was in so much pain, is that they had just transferred him to his rehab center and hadn't given him his meds yet because they were waiting on them to arrive....so what he saw and experienced was not a drug induced hallucination as some would blame it on. Things like this do happen, and we can't always explain it off with our mortal brains because these things occur on a Spiritual level. For example, your Grandfather said they talked but didn't move their mouths...that was their spirit communicating with his spirit letting him know that they'd be back and escort him over. I think it's a beautiful thing... Rest in peace, Tippers Grandpa, you are not forgotten.

Thank you so much for sharing!! Really enjoyed your comment. I was in my early 20s when Papaw died. I remember asking my daddy, Pap, if he thought they were sent for the reason you described he said he thought they were. Then I started thinking about how other people are dying as Papaw is dying and how there is a whole world going on that we can't see right under our noses 😀

As a city person I could listen to their stories in total awe , I live as far north in my state , that I could oh I have taking a ship of sorts to that country called Canada. FYI, my state's official fruit is the Paw Paw , Thanks again for u just bring simple joy .and Let's not start on them riddles . However, Why was the baby Strawberry so distraught?

Mommy told about when cholera was going around and Charlie DeHart convinced my Grampaw Breedlove that giving his hogs a dose of strychnine would keep them from getting it. He was right! Dead hogs can't get cholera. It killed every one of them. She told me Grampaw and Charlie didn't get along too well after that.

@@CelebratingAppalachia No, not much wind or real heavy rain right here. But Dusty and Missy both got heavy rain. It's still raining here but it's supposed to move out soon. We still have flash flood warnings for the creeks and mountainsides and flood warnings for the rivers. It's about over I think!

We spend every Thanksgiving in the NC mountains and has showed us how easy it is to fall in love with Appalachia. Sending much love from the beach to the mountains! ❤
