Jam: Dreadbox TYPHON and Yamaha MODX - Friday Fun

- Another in our occasional synth jam series, this time we took the just released Dreadbox TYPHON - which only arrived a couple of days back - review will be forthcoming, and the Yamaha MODX6 - which we've just started to get our teeth into - boy its a comprehensive machine and the new OS 2.5 adds more features, but thats for another time.
Typhon has some really lovely DSP effects from Sinevibes including an epic reverb (which we of course used here) thats going directly into the Yamaha MODX via the stera D/A input. We recorded a couple of tracks on the MODX - Piano and FM Glockenspiel using the pattern sequencer, then just played the Typhon live via the keyboard.
Enjoy!

I generally like Friday Fun jams. But this one is exceptionally good
I want an album called "Friday Fun" of Nick's jams. They are so good.
The true test is always "see what Nick does with it".
I still return to enjoy this little motif. I have a MODX7 and a Typhon, myself. Nice little pair. I’ve thought about sampling a couple pieces of this jam and chopping them up
Along with the great sounds of their devices, always liked the knobs Dreadbox uses. Great chunky things that are a blast to use.
That Dreadbox filter never ceases to disappoint huh?
Beautiful sounds, reminds me of Twin Peaks a bit
I was thinking the same thing! That crescendo in "Laura's Theme".
Definitely...was about to make the same comment and saw yours...😃
Agreed but, more so Anime or Miyazaki shit. 👍
with a touch of "The Great Below" by NIN, but totally Nick's own genius.
Twin Peaks is my favourite theme!
Nick, I'd love to see you do a longer video on the MODX. Even if it's just going through the presets. You're jam here is excellent (as always).
Absolutely amazing! 😌 So enjoyable! Thank you! 🙏🏿 Really hypnotized by the FM synthesis in the MODX. And the Typon is smooth, but satisfying. Solid energy coming from that.
Thank you, Nick. Your Friday Fun jams are a much needed balm for my soul in these trying times. I wish it was Friday fund day every day.
Damn, strong music with just those two pieces. Nice music dude.
Woo! Another lovely Friday Fun session - this one is more fully realized as a composition, and that Typhon sounds delicious! Well done, Nick.
Sounds amazing, really cool jam, loving the typhon!
I am floored with how great this sounded.
I think that when my Pulsar-23 finally arrives (any week now!) I'm going to put it on a pedestal behind me, too, so that in all my Zoom meetings for work my colleagues can gaze in wonder, admiration and jealousy. Been over 13 months since I put my name on the list.
"the Yamaha MODX ... boy its a comprehensive machine"'
I really love my MODX. Its value blows my mind, price for what you get. It’s a wonderful synth. If someone needs a bread and butter synth, of the current options, I cannot recommend a better value, period.
It seems very capable. A bit large though, and I get the impression the learning curve is a bit steep. Would be cool to see a desktop module version, or perhaps 37-key or 32-key version with mini keys.
@@InnerVisions68 Are the reduced buttons and faders annoying? I hate when they remove controls. The montage is double the price but the workflow might be a bit quicker and smoother without having to tab to different pages? and the Modx is ugly. Im still on the fence.
I like the simplicity of the Typhon. It's a great idea to have control over different effects.
That’s a lovely combo. Well played Nick.
Okay, that jam clearly needs the Pulsar 23 in the background. NIN vibes to be had. ;) Cheers!
Good God, Mr. Batt, this jam striking! Amazing stuff as always!
This was REALLY nice and something to enjoy while nodding off to sleep. Thanks Nick - I look forward to the reviews for both of these units and hopefully at least one more Friday jam with this combination.
I can’t believe that much character is coming out of a little box. Its got the heart of a CS-80
ETA on the Typhon review? Super excited to hear more!
Writing some cool sounding shit there Nick!
One of Batt's best Friday Funs. Emotional, broad and 'timely', in the current zeitgeist.
I think that most of us hope we leave the world at least a little bit better than we found it. Nick, you have definitely done that and then some. Thank you for everything, I really appreciate it.
Amazing music! and amazing video just as always. thanks a lot!!
Dude, I love this piece
The Typhon has a Sirin vibe style-wise, cant wait for the review, and to see what those FX pages are holding
Wow, that was awesome. Very unique and inspiring. Thanks Nick!!
I have a Dreadbox Nyx MK1. It's a beast! Dreadbox stuff has a character and a tone that just moves a lot of air!
Lovely Stuff. Good to see real musical use of synths - you know, played with a keyboard rather thana 16 step sequence.
Outstanding Friday Fun Jam, shades of Blade Runner running deep in this. A vary modern take on those classic Yamaha CS-80 brassy low hits mixed with sad melodic contemplation.
Well done.
Fun Fridays are always such a nice cap on the week, loved hearing the new Dreadbox.. would have happily listened for another 50 mins of that jam.. and wouldn't mind seeing some more of what you can wring out of the MODX/Montage :)
Another world. That is exc why I ever started to play synth.
Love the MODX, the Typhon sounds great as well!
Thank you, Nick!
Very Blade Runner 2049 fat brass with its updated 80s Vangelis vibe.
ooooo, this took me back to Eddie Jobson's Themes Of Secrets!!! well done sir!
That dreadbox sounds killer.
If you apologize one more time for going ambient we're going to send in the drones! Love ya stuff. Cheers!
This is gorgeous. It reminds me of The Durutti Column.
Excellent vid, loving your friday ambient jams as always. Looking forward to a review of the THPHON as I recon its going to be an essential purchase for those of us who like long verbing!
A very moving dynamic piece of layered sounds, wonderful combinations Nick.Bravo and Cheers.
Typhon sounds freaking gorgeous. Great actual music too of course. New release on the oul Bandcamp please.
absolutely beautiful. very musical
Thanks, not listened for a while, came out well!
Wow that sounds AMAZING!!!!!
MODX on steroids!!!
I hope Dreadbox re-releases the Murmux. Such nice stuff they make.
I have been slowly evolving my ambient rig into a "workstation controlling several external devices via muting , keyboard ranges, and MIDI channels" This is a wonderful example that makes me think i am on the right track. this sounded sweet. (i use a KromeEX)
Absolutely stunning opening. What was the MODX patch used? Sonicstate is superb, andy, rich, Gaz, and yourself Nick...Noah too. Superb. Thank you for the inspiration.
Wow. My Modx does not sound like that.
Nick, for god's sake, do a deep dive on the modx!
!! it won't mate 🙃... as it's being feed by the gorgeous Dreadbox TYPHON, old bean!! - sounds like you (and me too!) need to buy the Dreadbox TYPHON for our MODX's 😎🎹🎶👍🍻
Now, the interesting thing about MODX and MONTAGE - is that you got 18+ powerful effect "boxes" built right in, and if you play around with those, you can achieve the same thing you did with the external effect box. Best part - you can assign those 4 x 2 (or 8 x 2 on the Montage) "analog" controllers to your effect filters, so you can essentially control your live play the same way.
Absolutely brilliant, very atmospheric sounds
Beautiful peace of music
44 degrees centigrade in Northern California today (just a few degrees above normal for us), went bicycling and now enjoying some air conditioning and some great music.
You say ambient Nick but definitely a little jazz fusion. Loved it!
Great Vibe Nick! I love your Friday Fun sessions!
The dual oscillator of the Typhon reminds me of the dual vco in Analog Rytm. This sounds better though.
That’s a nice chord progression Nick!
I found it pleasing, as well
Very nice! Amazing what you can do with two synths.
Typhoon looks and sounds great. Very interesting 👍
Just noticed T shirt back to front 🙂
That Typhon! Wow.
Thanks Nick. Love from Barcelona.
Fookin’ ‘eck, Nick. That is completely ace - do it again!
Wowwwww Dreadbox nailed it on that little box
God that piece of music is beautiful. Will you publish it anywhere?
Both sound fantastic in your hands, Nick. Very nice
Love to hear your review ❤️ But then you'll make the full review of this amazing machine, please tell us how to sequence it with other gear, like you did with Modx6
Nick, please never apologise for the ambient fun!
Nick, this is amazing. You could probably sell everyone on a pile of bricks dropping on a floor.
MODX in my opinion is quite easy to use, but the pattern sequencer and recorder may be some of the more obfuscated features in it. I really recommend going through YamahaSynth's videos with Blake Angelos. He's a great presenter and explains it very clearly.
TRULY HYPNOTIC . GONA GET MY MODX OUT..
So beautiful!
Very nice
Hi, Nick! TYPHON is great, thanks for your video infos! I am an absolute beginner, Typhon has reched my little homestudio for 4 days. My question: The external INPUT of Typhon with what is it connected, the Interface OUT? Another Synthesizer OUT? You have shown in thiy video, that the outs of Typhon go into the INs of your synthesizer, but from where comes that cable into Typhons external Input? Thanks a lot! Dorthea from germany
In this video the external input is not connected. But you might use it to connect an external synth. But the signal will go through vca, filter before the FX
❤️ Friday Fun Synth Jams
Nick back again doing his underrated best
Boy oh boy, that's not even a jam, it's a fully articulated amazing track, so amazing I started with the idea of buying the Typhon and ended up realizing I just suck at playing!
Very dramatic jam. Thx Nick!
Ambient 😂😢, sounds more like the starting tune of a german crimi (series) from the eighties. Der Alte. ;)
Love the sound Nick! ❤
Nick you're the best. Love your demos!
Amazing sounding little synth. Pairs well with the MODX
In a few years digital will be alias free....imagine the possibilities of sonic purity coming with the perfect marriage of digital and analog together at last creating music.
I Bloody love this guy. extremelu clever.
lovely jam
lovely sounds
Very nice. Great demo as ever Nick. 👍🏻
So impressed by you! You better be scoring films...
Looks like a new direction for dreadbox, but I like it , thank you Nick
\
Hey nick any chances you share this awesome typhon patch?
Dennis
wow never knew about the typhoon thats one hell off a sexy synth
Typhon looks and sounds great. I bet they have a hit on their hands. Anyone know the price?
€349 I think
@@sonicstate nice! Thanks.
It does, as soon as I saw this video I knew what my next synth would be!
Took me a while, but I got it! Lord Of Cinder theme, Dark Souls! Love it Nick.
Also question Nick, does the effects delay sync up with an external clock source?
In Typhon?. Not in the beta firmware.
Fed up with desk tops, does no one make racks anymore. Do they think we have tables the size of football pitches?
Amazing stuff
How can you dislike this? 🤔
Super nice!!!
It would be nice to have a review of the MODX with the OS v2.5 as it brings so much new functionality to the synth, like the FM morphing. It has a pretty powerful 8-op FM engine with this brand new morphing feature, I haven't seen in other FM synths (except the Yamaha Montage of course, which has the same engine and got it at the same time now).
I'd really like it if you at least do a review of the 8 op FM engine in this! I've not heard anyone do that... and what you can do with 8 op vs the DX 7's 6 Op FM engine.
After a few FM OPs, it gets so complex it's hard to understand or sculpt. Getting into the sonic differences between 6-op and 8-op would be one hell of a deep dive.
The thing is, its not just like an 8 op DX. Each oscillator can be a sine, or a variety of other saw/triangle-like waveforms, incuding some with a resonant filter applied. These are individually much richer than what you get on more classic FM. With eight of them, and all of the LFOs and envelopes and effects, its pretty powerful. And you can have 8 parts, so really 64-Op FM. But the interface isn't great, I think there are internal Yamaha sound design desktop apps to help that they haven't released to the public.
TBH now, with the 2.5 OS update, I'd just let the new (FM) SmartMorph feature do the sound design for you - at the end of the day, all you've trying to get to are unique sounds out of the engine. Trying to even appreciate the complex interactions of FM & 8OP's, would literally take forever .....
@@ZetaCarinae that's what I'm getting at, how much more complex, interesting sounds can be produced with the Montage/MODX FM engine than the DX 7. It's looking like it's too complex for most people to wrap their head around. Seems most people that have these synths don't want to spend the time deep diving because most of what they want is already there. I don't have one yet but hope to get one and I'd love to deep dive and see what happens. With the new morphing capability I could see where it might end up sounding a bit like a wavetable synth type sounds... which ties into the 64-op FM engine.... nice!
As always Nick, thanks for making my day a bit better. *Edit: It is very, very hot in New Mexico. :)
Nicely Sakamoto-ish , Nick.
I’m really checking a lot of videos about this synth since I’m thinking into selling my Nord Electro and buying a workstation.
The reason is that a Nord Electro is more a gigging keyboard and I’m not gigging that much. Also the sounds on the MODX seems really fine so I won’t miss the Pianos from my Nord… What about the construction quality? Is it reliable in case I should gig with it?
