You’re amazing cause you zoomed in to actually show us specifically where to look and you gave us a tip so that we don’t forget. The pieces we took off

Your spark plug 1, 2 and 3 is actually 4,5 and 6. 1,2,3 is located in the back.

I agree I have a 01 and the repair manual says 4,5,&6 are in the front

Except cylinder 1 is ALWAYS the furthest forward on the engine block, in this case, their labeling is correct.

Thanks for posting this. Back in the day (I find I use that expression a great deal of late) changing plugs was simple and something I actually looked forward to doing. That was before having to remove an intake manifold of course. Think I will go over to the local U-pick wrecking yard and find a late model Escape before I take this on in my driveway on my wife's wheels. Thanks again, very helpful. Would suggest next time you back the camera up a bit so we can get a bigger view, but I get it. And paper towel suggestion is excellent for any project involving taking off the manifold. Yours is a sick, sick engine. Head gasket would give you signs of water or antifreeze on plugs possibly, but not oil. More like a serious seal leak. At least two spark plugs showing lots of oil... New Spark plugs won't be helping this one much.

1,2, and 3 are on the back/firewall side i think...

Found that one or more of your spark plugs was partially immersed in oil? Should have replaced the valve cover and spark plug well gaskets while you had the manifold off. This leakage into the spark plug wells will only get worse with time.

There was oil on that plug and your socket due to broken or worn seals

He should have done the valve cover gaskets and the well seals

Yeah that was pretty half ass to not replace the valve cover gaskets and plug tube seals. They sell as a set anyways. I just did this same repair on my bros 03 Mazda Tribute. Had the same issue with oil on the plugs.

Hey quick question I’m trying to do the same thing that you’re doing on a Ford escape 2002 but is it that hard to get to them spark plugs I’m trying to do it myself but I don’t want to mess up anything do you have any quick tips or any suggestions that will make it easier for me thanks happy holidays to you and your family

I would suggest taking off that intake manifold, it may be possible to get to the plugs otherwise, but it’s a lot easier when you get everything out of the way. Another thing is just be patient, even the most experienced mechanics struggle. Just be gentle and respect the parts, last thing you want is to rush it and cause more problems (like cross threading a bolt) in the long run. I wish you best of luck! And Merry Christmas to you as well!
