I have one of those in the double stack version and absolutely love it, this thing is wicked accurate! I've tried about everything through it and I've had no issues with failure to feed or failure to fire. I use strictly Winchester Silvertips for carry and they're dead nuts accurate and those seem to have way more power than most any of the other 380 that I normally use. I wouldn't get rid of this gun in a million years.
I just bought a used 85 BB with 5 magazines and I would bet a paycheck that the previous owner never fired the gun! It’s extremely tight, and took it to the range today and I was so happy with the firearm! Accurate, smooth recoil and With the walnut grips, it’s aesthetically pleasing!
I too have an 85F, I picked it up several years back for $400 and have never regretted that purchase! Since then, I have put Beretta wooden grips on it years ago because they make it look so much better! I forgot what they looked like with the black hard grips! Like others have said, this is one that I will never let go of, my son will own it when I'm gone and it will still be a fine shootin piece of Beretta Art!
@@joshuagibson2520 I haven't seen them in shops for a while, but I just assume they will do small batches of them. Similar to the cx4s production. I could be wrong though
I bought an 85FS in 2012 that was close to being brand new. When we go to the range, my friends all ask to shoot it and come away with the reaction of I need to get one. A lot of fun!
My father recently passed away and I have his old model 84BB not sure when it was made it’s a high polished stainless 13rd with beautiful non checkered wooden grips I don’t know much about these pistols but it’s a beautiful sweet shooting 380
I love my G42 in .380. Fun and easy to carry , good Ameriglo sights, good magazine and holster options. My wife is not a big gun person but out of all my guns she loves shooting the G42 so I keep it.
I have the 84F. 13+1 .380. Very accurate and 100% reliable. Not to mention it's a fun shooter. One advantage over most other .380s is with a longer barrel you get a little more velocity out of the "short 9".
Also something everyone tends to forget is that those Beretta Cheetahs are made in the Italian facility of high quality and production/import costs are higher. It may not be possible for Beretta to make those pistols with the cost now. Thats why a lot of these gun companies have production facilities in the USA now like CZ, Beretta, and Glock.
Have the 85FS. Love it. One of my favorite guns to show off. But impossible to rack. Could never carry it. Also hated that weird sight. Had a gun smith drill a couple of pockets and made it into a 3 dot sight.
Take you time and put alot of rounds through it. I will get easier with more rounds! If yours is like mine was, it likely came from a European police depot and didn't see alot of rounds put through it. I have put over 700 rounds through mine in the 4 years I have had it and its ALOT easier then when I first got it!
According to Beretta, the FS denotes the addition of the automatic firing pin block. I'm sure they also added the magazine disconnect on those models too (yuck). On the full size Beretta 92FS, they added a slot in the underside of the slide and an oversize hammer pin which rides in that slot to prevent the slide from flying off and hitting the shooter if it ever broke. BTW, one of the coolest Berettas I've ever shot was the 87 Target, which is the single action only .22LR with the extended barrel and frame and top accessory rail.
Have a 81BB and a Tomcat both in .32ACP. Love them. Shooting the Underwood Xtreme Defenders and there's enough penetration. Plus, there always on target with no recoil.
These are great guns. I have several of them and so does my father. 81, 84, 85bb, 85fs chrome plated with wood grips. If you can find one in great condition for under $400, I would buy it. We use them as a fun range gun, but you could also concealed carry one and feel pretty well armed.
I have one of the Italian police trade in ones for like $209 a few years back. It was like never fired. It only had a few finish scuffs on the edges of the slide from bulk shipping crates. Despite being small the 32 acp seems like a decent defense caliber if you place your shots right. Rather have 9mm but decent little pistol.
I’ll second the 81 .32 having beautiful styling and build quality. I almost had a heart attack when I thought I had managed to leave it behind at an outdoor range. Several weeks later it was discovered at home where it had been misplaced … duh … lesson learned. Mine was also an Italian police imported trade in. It arrived in lightly used and very well cared for condition. Maybe another batch will eventually hit our shores again. 🤞🏻
84 owner here, seriously slept on IMO. Modern day 380 loads achieve standards. Has run every ammo type I’ve thrown at it. It’ll run great for years to come!
Was kind of surprised how much the Army personnel dog the M9. Carried it in Saltwater environment for over 23 years of 31 of my service. Never had an issue. Perhaps the fact we’d come back to the ship or station and clean them, kept it totally reliable. Love the M9, but also loved the 1911A1. Only one I didn’t care for was the SIG 229 the CG adopted before I retired. I love SIGs but didn’t at all like our 229’s trigger.
I have an 82 32 caliber double stack. It's a really good carry gun, small and light yet fits the hand really well and is super accurate. Great pistols these small berettas are
I love the 84BB, good capacity and feels like a dream in the hand, I wish Beretta would make some sleek classic designs like this again, smaller than the 92FS but a bit bigger than the 84 and the cheetahs. Kind of like the Sig P210, no rail, just something classy for fun.
I am so great full that you have done a review on this pistol. I really like the cheetah series of pistols I know you are not a big beretta fan but the cheetahs are awesome.
Anemic round? Depends on what ammo you choose. Hotter 380 rounds are moving out at 1100 ft/sec.. That is the same speed as standard/target/white box 9mm.. and a 90 or 95 gr slug is just a hair lighter/same diameter as the 115gr 9mm. A properly ammo'd .380 is a viable (near 9mm) defense choice.
I owned a Beretta LTT compact, and couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Its single stage was the flattest I've ever felt, but was at like 8 pounds. I sold it and picked up a shadow 2 instead. Much happier for it
I owned a Model 84 with a double stack magazine, 13 + 1 capacity, and it was an awesome range gun. To me it's only downfall was being a large gun for the 380 ACP. It was very accurate, and just a fun gun to shoot.
I have a 85FS and a 84BB. Most of the time I carry the 85fs owb but still concealed. The 84bb uses the same holster but being a double stack (newer mags are 14 rounds) it is heavier. I always carry a spare magazine no matter which pistol I am carrying. Having watched more .380 ammo testing videos than I can count, I am confident that the .380 will stop the threat with less possibility of over penetration should the need occur. The longer barrel of either of these pistols compared to most .380's of today gives a much better chance of proper expansion of hollow point ammunition.
Erik , I'm thinking the sight's are designed to drop half of the front dot into the rear dot , this makes One dot when aligned front and rear , the front post is level with the rear post when One dot is achieved . Very accurate straight blow back design, Love it ❤.
Great review Eric. I just picked up an 84F a couple of days ago (double stack 13 round mags). It even came with a spare mag. Took it straight to the range, and put 50 or so rounds through it. It's everything you say it is. I even found an IWB leather holster in my "bag O holsters" that fit.
