It's pretty interesting to know that following the presentation of that single (which was on the french national tv channel) there was a big frequentation jump in suicidal help calling centers through all of the country, it shows the impact it had, he pushed a lot of people to seek help
As someone who is fluent in French and English, listening to this song in both interpretations and the understanding of something called music induced stress by Stromae adding in the high pitched stutter sound, not in time with the song, along with the stressful bodily actions showing anxiety and horror. Impeccable song and an even better artist. Breaks my heart thinking that someone so amazing can feel these things.
Stromae told in an interview after the album Racine carrée released that only 20% in the album talks about himself. Even the song papaoutai which many people associate with his past, is ~30% about himself he said. He also said his job as a singer is talking about other peoples lives, as soon as I think my own life is interesting enough to sing about i'll probably make a big mistake.
@@Googlium Its a song about depression and mental Illness, which he knows a thing or two about. It might not LITERALLY be about him, but it is written from an angle that makes other people struggling with that shit go "Yep, thats kinda how it feels" The "I-Narration" or firsthand perspective of his songs may not be biographical, and the songs themselves do entail a good portion of abstraction, BUT the 30% of himself in there is what makes this emotional and empathetic. So the songs may not be about himself but he is ONE of the people they are about, if that makes sense.
He has the stems for this one on his website for free for artists to remix, and believe me when I tell you there is so. much. ear candy. The instrumental has so many little things that all add up to make the song feel so uncomfortable and restless. I have the absolute highest respect for him as a songwriter and producer. He’s on another level.
You must know that a lot of people wants a featuring between Stromae and Damso as they're both from Belgium and they are talking about a lot of dark themes (specially in Lithopedion from Damso)
He’s brilliant. I know he says he doesn’t usually only sing about himself, he just sees his job as story telling. I understand that... but given his past experiences and his honesty about panic attacks and needing to time away from public eye I would say there’s a lot of his own experiences in this song. I love the production of this song and the video. I don’t think there’s any of his songs that don’t touch my heart in some way. He’s just so good at putting feeling into everything.
I have depression... the thing I relate more aren't the lyrics... it's the moment he sreams silently, or fight with the void (i always burst in tears watching that)..... and the head tilt at 2:36

Considering the fact that he lived a burn-out (explained by a really huge world tour and secondary effects due to a certain medication called Lariam like depression and suicidal thoughts), I do think he talks about himself in this song
@@antoinebonnet1860 yes, but he has always said he takes out the personal as much as possible so it relates to everyone (I'm specifically thinking about Papaoutai). But obviously one has to go through all this to be able to address it in such a way. He openly credits his brother, Luc, with saving his life in Africa while on tour w Racine Carrée. Luc realized something was terribly wrong and put the tour on hold. So what I think we have from him here is the truth stripped down to relate to everyone who suffers from deep depression, severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts. It has to be personal to be relatable. Love Stromae. He talks about things no-one wants to address (Quand C'est for example). Brilliant piece.
As an adverse reaction to the malaria drug called lariam he nearly killed himself. It took him 7 years to recover and to be able to come back as an artist. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's all out there on the internet, not a secret. Sometimes I wish people would look up things before they talk.
@@neobrand1845 true, but OP was also right Stromae is much inspired by Jacques Brel who also understood the art of story-telling - it's not just about him

That first interpretation of his anxiety gives goosebumps!!! Stromae is a genius. And I love that he is not mainstream and that his music is respected at another level.

Sincerely I think the prod give money to the youtubers saying it is very good because the text is bad the music is "standard" he use samples already recorded like a DJ. Very good producers but he is not a genius !
