My son's bass amps (Peavey Nitro Bass and Fire Bass heads) have XLR outs with a level control. We use our pedal tuners as mutes for guitar changes. I know it's still not a guarantee, but for tuning we both have the same model of pedal tuner. Thanks Scott!

Howdy. I was a little disappointed when I happened to read something on the internet that you had quit doing your original channel. I guess it is not true since you are still here. I would just say to you brother, you can't please everyone all the time. And all the free assistance you give to people struggling with learning the guitar is a blessing. Just remember with over 100k subscribers you are bound to get a few nuts. I'm glad to see that you are staying the course and continuing your life's work. How many other people can say that they have helped over 100k people with something. Your lessons are especially important to me as I had to retire early due to a failed back surgery. My activities are now limited and I'm enjoying my time learning all I can about guitar. But due to my arthritis I'm pretty much an electric guitar player because of the easier action. Yep. Even if the common tuner is slightly off by one or two cents, or whatever, it's still better than everyone using their own tuners being off by one or two cents. You'll have one person at +2 cents, another at -1 cents, another right on, and so on. Great way to sound like shit.
Scott I realize you want to mic all the instrument cabinets into the PA instead of line outs, but, what do you think of the German silent guitar plugs? They don't connect until fully inserted into the jack. Such as Neutrik-NP2X-AU-SILENT-2-Pole-1-4-034-Phone-Plug-w-Gold-Contacts-and-Silent-Switch on eBay. It might eliminate the need for the A/B switch. Costs about $12. I have a few I like them they don't pop.

Awesome video Scott, just the information I was looking for. I summed up that a active di box is for for instruments with no electronic controls and a passive di box is for electronically controlled instruments like a strat or standard electric with preamp and controls. Whats your opinion

Thanks, I once unplugged a guitar from a sweet Amp at a music shop, Amp was fine but the worker almost flipped😥 Said on certain Amps, just power off and wait a sec to unplug 👀 such a bad habbit, to see others do it and think its ok.

Both my keys have balance TRS Jack outputs. (try getting a vol pedal for that one hah!). does DI boxing not cause degradation? My bass has an XLR output too (nice try Yamaha) but I use XLR-TS cable. You have explained nicely why I had a fight with a sound guy who wouldn't let me take DI from my Trace Elliot SMX amp (which has HP filtered FX loop with FX in) thus depriving me of my voice!
So let's that the out of the D.I. will go to the mixer, does it mean that I don't need to mic my guitar amp speaker? If that so, how do I get the real sound that's coming out from the speaker? I really want to know this because I want the real sound of my guitar amp speaker goes to the mixer and out to the loud speaker. Or there's no way to do that when I'm using D.I.?

Theoretically the transformer inside the DI box determine the Sonic quality of the unit? Is there really a difference in practical situation? should we buy those expensive brand name boxes (usually $100 - $200) or cheaper boxes are (around $50) fine? Thanks again.
From my experience, when you pull the 1/4in cable out from the direct box first, you will avoid the destructive pop that you get when you pull the cable out from your instrument first.

Yeah, so many reasons. Typically, the bass tone on stage is crap and the sound guy can't fix it if you are feeding him the same crap sound. It's like giving him a turd and telling him to make it edible. Basses are 100% meant to go direct and your amp is YOUR monitor. If you turn your amp on or off ..... you can blow every single speaker in your entire sound system. You can mix the direct signal with a nice microphone on one of your speakers, but NEVER connect your amp to anything other than the power in the wall. The line out etc. is put on there by morons that make you think you're getting something cool. Nope, just put it there planning on that shit "Feature" to sell some amps, and people fall for it and all sound men will come up to the stage and yank that mic cable right out of its XLR plug and leave wires hanging out of the back of your amp. It's funny as hell. Seen it a LOT.
An active bass will require a passive DI box. A passive basses requires an active DI box. Note, active DI’s will require phantom power or an onboard 9volt battery. Many sound engineers prefer DIs rather than utilizing a preamp balanced outputs. When in doubt ask the sound guy prefers.

Hey Scott ,our sound tech uses 2 DI boxes , one is set to feed from the instrument and another from amp/effects . It doesn't matter whether we're live or in the studio and very rarely does he even turn the instrument channel on . I'm curious as to your opinion on this set up because we've had a few arguments over the extra time it takes during set up at gigs.

The mixer will be clipping with the gain (trim) all the way off.....so, time to use the switch on the direct box to fix the stupidity. lol Either that, or go up to the keyboard player, smack him in his face.....pull the cable from the headphone jack and plug it in the back ..... to the mono output where it should be. lol

Some are. DI stands for Direct Input. There at least a hundred different kinds that are all different than the last one. Some with preamps built in, active, passive, ones with flippin' tubes in them. lol But, when it comes to just trying to get an instrument cable to an XLR that can run a long distance and also be able to adjust the attenuation and ground.....most of THOSE, like shown here, are pretty much the same.
You can always just use the DI box. I just like to use the A/B box to totally kill the signal to the DI box. A LOT of instruments still pass noise (sometimes MORE noise) when their volume knobs are shut all the way down and just sitting on the stand during breaks.

Instead of the DOD a/b box I have a TC Electronics poly tuner. When in tuning mode it kills the guitar signal out.

It does make a difference. I use Radial JDI passive, I hear AR-133 BSS is good active

If it's just an electric guitar, you will simply mic it and no D.I. is needed.

I use the Countryman DI's in my studio. So I can reamp the dry signal to fix the guitar players crappy tone.

Yes, that is actually what it should be plugged into. Nothing else unless it's directly into recording hardware or software.
