Is Creating Your Art Making You Feel Guilty?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 авг 2024
- Many artists feel guilt about so many things: not being productive enough, not making the artwork they "should" be making, not achieving their goals quickly enough as an artist, even just using expensive art supplies! This video explores the many layers of guilt experienced by artists. Discussion led by RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu and Teaching Artists Alex Rowe and Lauryn Welch.

I really need this. Art guilt is something I deal with on an almost daily basis. Guilt of having too many art materials, guilt of not being productive enough, not good enough, guilt of being an artist (such an absurd job) so hm. ^^'
It's a hard mode of thinking to break out of for sure. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
i think part of art guilt can also consist of guilt surrounding being an artist or someone that creates art. There can be a feeling of not doing something productive and also around how creating art can sometimes feel unhelpful to society, especially considering the pandemic
That's actually what I was expecting them to talk about! But I also feel this kind of guilt, too. We're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place: if we make art, we feel guilty for not doing more "useful" things, but if we don't make art, we feel guilty for not working on our skills.
Absolutely! Not feeling useful to society as an artist is a huge source of guilt, and I'm also surprised we didn't get to it! Maybe we'll do a pt 2 on this addressing the place of an artist during the pandemic (or other disasters). I think that deserves a video entirely to itself! -Lauryn (Art Prof Teaching Artist)
“Art Guilt” is real and valid and thank you for ONE. Identifying it and TWO talking about it and including everyone’s questions.
Art guilt to me is being pulled in to two different directions. Doing art or doing stuff around the house, the issue is when I wind up not doing either. If I can some stuff done around the house, then I can do some art. But when I don't do either then that where I feel most guilty. I let myself take these breaks to decompress, but still feel bad about not getting things done.
Yessssss
You don't find your art style your art style will find you.
That reminds me. I need to go water the garden! Take care.
Is that a euphemism?
@@caesarvolz6945 It relates to what they were talking about in the video. Artists are multifaceted. Monet tended his garden. 18:35, 18:47
@@SarahJohnson-tg5kc It was a joke
My home is more a mess, I fight distraction, and there have been too many cookies. I have not made a lot of art progress but found a great deal of online inspiration and materials information, thanks for your role in that. I have realistic views of what to chip away at for the next few years and will share some eventually. It's probably a better outlook than thinking against patterns that I would use the pandemic to whip the house into shape, and myself, and do creative things. Yes on homework versus passion work, and personal subject matter being the thing!
I so feel you on the cookies....-Prof Lieu
I've been watching you all for about 2 weeks now. I would like to say thank you so much for helping me improve my art. You all remind so much of my favorite art teachers and professors. And you all remind me why I love visual art. 💖
This is so kind! We're happy to be here :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff

My art guilt has to do with feeling that the resources my art takes to make (canvas, oil paint, firing kilns, wood stretcher bars) are not worth the environmental toll it takes and my carbon footprint
I think a lot of people feel this way, it is definitely a question of ethics. I know a lot of oil paint brands are trying their best to be as environmentally friendly as possible - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Hmmm I feel guilty when I don't do art stuff, but I also feel guilty when I DO art stuff because I don't have paid work, and so I feel like a societal leech for being so chronically misused. I have such a strong work presence, but I'm just languishing being unable to actually use it for anything.
As artists we really can't win, can we??? 😂 -Prof Lieu
Imagining people complexly ^_^

Def a Holt vibe!
I really love Lauren's paintings in this stream. I actually think they show a lot of growth=
I think so too!! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Take a shot everytime Alex says 'like'
I always feel guilty, I’m a Catholic lol 😂
The guilt I feel is that the only thing I want to do is make art. I don't want to go out and socialise ( as I write this we are no longer isolating at home).
I feel that same guilt all the time, the balance can be really hard to maintain! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I think I signed up for the raffle, but I'm not sure? I made a donation, but there didn't seem to be a way to mark which prize I was interested in? I'm used to the low tech raffles where you drop a ticket in a jar in front of the prize you want
I sent you an email confirmation! Basically if your name is drawn, then you get to choose. -we will Prof Lieu
