6 weeks 2000 miles is not a long term review
That is pretty close to the average annual mileage put on a typical motorcycle here in the USA. After this past weekend we have been in the saddle for over 3k miles... We have enough time on this bike, and we could ride it for a year and I think the points discussed in this review would not change. Anyhow, thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. - Kyle

I have this exact bike and love it.
It really is a great machine.
great video! i am 2.02 m. do you believe ATAS is right choice for me? or should i look for other adventure bikes?
I am really liking the Africa Twin, it is a great bike. The weight distribution difference between the standard AT and the ATAS is very noticeable. I TOTALLY thought I would have liked the ATAS way more than the standard AT, and at this point, I am leaning the other way! Shocking to me... but I have not been Off Road on the standard AT as of yet... That will be the kicker I am sure. We will see.... Stay tuned. Thanks for watching! - Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Very beautiful video. Thats how reviews are made imo. You forgot to mention one gripe, the adventure sports doesn't come stock with a center stand.
Thank you for your comments. My ATAS came with a center stand, or I would have for sure addressed that, had I known. All of these big ADV bikes really need a center stand so tire repair, oil changes, etc... can be easily done on the trail. Thanks for watching! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
It should come with 50/50 tires from the factory. The front fender needs three or four more inches of clearance lots of guys have been stuck in the mud with the front wheel unable to turn.
And the guy in this video is a very dangerous lane splitter. and you are not allowed to lane split if traffic is going more than 30 miles per hour. But lane splitting in the rain is just asking for trouble.
Get a "dirt" bike ! This 500 plus bike isn't a "dirt" bike! Though it wants to be . 2016 DCT owner, very happy !!
AMEN about the tires! The "HighwayMax" tires that come on the bike left A LOT to be desired. Man... A LOT! That being said, I really like the Kenda Big Block tires we have been testing. A pair for like $160... and they work well. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Looking to buy a 2019 AT Adventure Sport here in the UK as some dealers have reduced the price by £2000. I do think Honda missed a trick by not installing cruise control. Really good review, cheers.
Hi, agreed, cruise control was a big miss. Thankfully is standard for 2020. Thanks for watching. Hope you get a great deal on a new AT, let us know how you like it.
This is a very good review !!! Looking forward to hear your opinion about the DCT version soon.
Thanks Swegotech! We are really really curious too.... I had big reservations, but after riding the new Honda Talon 1000 this past weekend... It will be a fun experiment to compare the two Twins against the SxS. Thanks for watching -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
OMG! The ride home yesterday was so WEIRD! The up-shift is no problem... BUT that muscle memory for pulling in the clutch and downshifting the shift lever when coming to a stop is SO Ingrained! Stay tuned!
@@manybikes I only rode the DCT for a full day. While I love it in the city/traffic I also was never able to ride really at the limit on the DCT bike in this short time. Like you I was so used to the clutch that I had some problems with the DCT (which should be fine for most riders).
SWEGOTECH it really is a strange feeling. We should meet up an really do a side by side... as our bikes are now the same color! I need to get the Forkshield installed tomorrow... its dizzying on the freeway at speeds as it sits. It strangely feels faster than the ATAS which is strange. Time will tell! Stay tuned.
Great review but if you got 4 days of gear in that bag, you must be sleeping naked in the open woods, on the ground, with no covers....
Well Steve... I have ridden to the southern tip of Baja and back with JUST that bag on my KTM 950 Super Enduro. That was a 9 day trip. Everything fits inside. 30 degree sleeping bag, Nemo air mattress, tarp & rope in case it rains, small mess kit, MSR stove, tool kit, tire repair goodies and clothes. That's it. Self contained in one decent sized duffel bag. Thanks for watching! - Kyle
I have a UK model and it definitley has self cancelling indicators.
Oh do I wish! I leave the blasted things on so many times... - Kyle
Fuck sake mate... That filltering up the middle at speed in the wet..im mad but not that mad...
haha, yeah it can be nerve wracking at times but you get used to it here in southern California.
good review, and I agree switching position of turn signal with horn is stupid by honda and very annoying. Also foot pegs are a joke and at this price range they could put proper pillions pegs.
Yes, this also took me a while to get used to. But now I am not hitting that horn anymore, but in the beginning it drove me nuts. lol
@@swegotech8466 the problem is I have honda and yamaha so no way to get used to :)
@@robsonenduro3316 good point, I never thought about it, because the AT is my only street legal bike I own
Honda does that for Asian market .
They are constantly using it, and that location is preferred.
Should be a control group swap out for N.America !
Well... if that is the reason for the horn button... I would be okay with it if the signals would cancel themselves!!!
Nice work on the review, thanks -- i've been researching for my first ADV bike for way too long and it's nice to get run-downs from people riding the bike for more than just a press release
Ha! Ha! Yeah, we hear you on this one... Following this review I was on the DCT version for 5k miles. Both were fantastic machines. Have you made your purchase yet? Do you have any other questions? Thanks for watching. - Kyle
You americans are just obsesed with cruise control.. is not a fucking car .. is a motorcicle..is not made to sleep on it like you do in a car when you drive with cruise control. And what is so called "Long Term Review" even means? did you rode that bike for 2 or 3 years in diferent terains or in diferent contries to say that is a long term review? Anyone that is interested in buying one of these bike knno0w the diferences on these two. Not so big diferences for 95% of customers. They will never go with them offroad anyway.. and those who does go ofroad.. they will ride them under 50km/h.. so ?
Thank you for your feedback and opinions. Here in the USA we have long flat stretches of highway ... literally hundreds of miles with out a turn. In those situations, cruise control is a nice tool. Long is relative I suppose... I had the bike in my possession for 5 months put 5k miles on it an rode it daily... in the Rain, Snow, on the Highway, at the Beach, in the Mountains, in the Desert ... This represented more miles than the average american logs in a 2 year period and covers most types of terrain. Did our best in the time that we had. Thanks for watching! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
@@chaparralmotorsports I make 5k miles a month at least on mine.. in a season.. and yea.. in 5k miles you learn the bike enough to know what it can do.. but it depends most of the time on who is riding it. It may difer from rider to rider.
Dude… you’ve got a microphone….. why you shouting?
What? Can't hear you?
How can you even comment on a BMW 2008 model versus a current gen bike.Rather ride the BMW 1250 or F850 and pass a comment.Just my take, thks.
Bruce Kendall He can comment about it just like he was comparing it to an old Gold Wing... besides, we all know that old GS’s are tractors.... as you probably do too.... it’s a review of the Honda... not a bike comparison.
Thanks for your comment Bruce, it is appreciated and well taken. I was referencing it bikes I have had extensive seat time on... and therefore can truthfully explain "differences" in feeling. I have ridden the new 1250 GS's and they are spectacular... but I spend like 2 hours in the saddle. Versus the 80k miles I put on my 2008 model... -- Kyle
Great review and you hit all of the major points. I don’t trust the “light bar” with as much credit as you gave it . I did add Hepco Becker lower engine guards that really beefed up the lower section. This bike really responds well to a full exhaust (SC Projects in my case) and a fuel management mapping system (Rapid Bike) . It completely changed the sportiness of the bike... something I would highly recommend as simply putting a can on it kinda ruins the sublime mapping of the bike.
Question... did you run the seat in the high or low setting? I’m 6.2 and I run it high but boy or boy does it feel tall (until you are moving and then it is perfect).
Thank you for taking the time to comment... Your bike sounds SWEET! As for the seat... I need to go take a look as I was unaware it was adjustable! I'll let you know tomorrow. - Kyle
One other thing to think about if you are 6ft and above... the bike has probably the worst buffeting that I have ever experienced... the solution is a plastic guard (found on the internet) that attaches to the top of the gas tank reducing air that comes up around the forks... I also had added a movable air deflector at the top of the windshield. The combination has almost completely remedied the issue. (Also riding on the lower seat setting would help too.) Anyway... it is a non event at this point. Fabulous motorcycle coming from a MV Agusta 1090RR and Honda Blackbird tarted up with Ohlins.
@@dp_NYC Yes! It's a Swegotech Forkshield and it is MANDATORY! Check it out: www.swegotech.com/Forkshield-Africa-Twin-CRF1000L-stop-ADV-helmet-vibrations.html
I loved the Goldwing comparison.
Ha! Ha!
Best review I have seen. Great job!
Awe thanks Rnadall. Telling how it "feels and handles" not what Honda says it does and leaving it at that. It is a really really neat machine! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
now this what i call a test and review . good job .. and thanks for sharing .
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Self cancelling turn signals and flashing break lights are disabled in North American models.
LAME! I wonder why?
I live in Europe. Mine has self cancelling turn signals.
@@dirkmertens6926 Lucky Dog!
Wow great review.
Which model of Africa Twin Standard or AS You find better and why?
Hi I want to get one of these, not brand new, what model year is best for second hand?
I have ridden 2016, 2018 and 2019 models. The electronics have gotten better year over year, but the overall function of the bike has not changed. Find a well taken care of used one - any year - and you will be happy. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Chaparral Motorsports sweet, thanks for the info. I will most likely get an older one, 2016. They go for about £6000 here in the UK
@@sabbage100 Nice! That is a great deal! On average a 2016 here in the USA with 5K to 15k miles on it will sell for about $8,500 USD.
WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING THE WHOLE TIME?
TO KEEP YOU AWAKE.
i like the horn button where it is..
Good spot
I just bought the 2018 CRF1000L2 Africa Twin AS , but when I shift in to gear 1, it is not that smooth like yours are. Do you think there is something wrong with mine that is not that smooth? Maybe I need to take it to the shop for a closer look?
Interesting MrJizez... I have ridden 4 of these bikes now and have logged over 15k across the 4 models. All of them have shifted just as smoothly into 1st. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
@@chaparralmotorsports I will soon try to record a short video to show you, just to know you opinion about it.
You need to drive the bike for at least a year to call it a long term review. Thats why I dont agree with a lot of the things you mention
Thank you for your reply and for sharing your opinion. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
That's a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports.
Incorrect and misleading title.
Title changed to 2018. Thank you. I had not looked at the VIN plate and was initially told it was a 2019. My apologies. - Kyle

Ok. What's stopping you?
@@chaparralmotorsports i have always wanted that bike.I would trade my 441 BSA for it. or my 650..Hornet.
@@chaparralmotorsports Oh I forgot I am 76 years old.
You don't want self cancelling indicators. I have them, they suck.
Ha! Ha! Ha!
Solid review.
Strongly disapprove of the lane splitting. Extremely poor driving habit, that inevitably results in tragedy. It's meant to be used at a crawl- not speed. Legal or not, the risk isn't worth the return. Opinions vary, Cheers.
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Definitely needlessly increasing risk. Cars have zero idea you are advancing and taking the last two feet of THEIR lane. Sorry: That's a fucking idiot move. Car driver getas a text; wanders two feet right in THEIR OWN LANE and you are going for a ride in the meat wagon. Yeah crawling up at a stoplight. pefectly safe; this is madness.
Tactical 690R couldn’t have said it better myself. People need to stop lane slipping all together.
Fantastic review, thank you !
Glad you liked it!
Cant find your review about the regular Africa twin...
Hi Miki, I am not absolutely sure but I don't think we did a review on the Regular Africa Twin. Thanks for watching.

Thx for the fast response!
✌
Can only agree with you on the two-up and loaded riding. Torque, grunt, suspension and roomyness of that machine are incredible. I ride a 2017 Super Tenere ES (mostly because of the lesser maintenance shaft drive) and it's been four times now that we go ride with Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental to explore the backroads over there and they rented me 5 different bikes so far (V-Strom 1000, Tiger 800, GS800, that CRF1000 and just recently a brand new 2019 GS850 Adventure), and by an enormous margin the CRF1000 was the best. It soaks up bumps and holes on unpaved roads as if they were paved. Often I realized we were going about 60 mph on these dirt roads and if it were not for curves or cliffs, we could have gone even faster at times. It is an incredible off-road touring machine but on the asphalt, it felt horrible. It was weak in horsepower and drove like an overcooked spaghetti. The new GS850 was just a bit too small for two-up riding for an entire week and lacked horsepower too for two up and loaded riding on the paved road BUT it handled like a sport bike, thanks to its brand new Anakee III and good suspension in Dynamic mode. These tires are potable on hard pack and gravel but are really not meant for loose stuff or mud, we struggled so much…. If it was not for the chain maintenance, I would convert to the Honda.
Nice descriptive write-up Patrick! Thank you. Looking back a the old Triumphs from the 50's... they were used for cruising, hill climbs, desert races, etc.... And today we expect so much more from our machines... Its NUTS. We are really lucky to be living in this era of Motorcycling! Thanks for your comments! - Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Who makes a plastic tank fo it?
I have not found one yet... but it NEEDS one!
Hi Kyle,
Very nice review, learned a lot coming from a guy who's riden similar bikes.
Would appreciate your quick take on the KTM Adventure you've ridden & this, is the KTM worth the several $k for that power, adjust ability, (better suspension?) etc.
Thanks
This was a "Honda Review" and it is a great bike... but I still like my 1190 Adv. just a bit more. The POWER is just too much fun. I have 15k on my 1190 Adv R. I picked up last year and I love it. Thanks for watching. - Kyle
Thanks Kyle, Appreciate the response. I'm a bit of a power guy as well, (I have seen some mods for the Honda that "wake it up"), but also get that Honda built this engine to be a dependable chugger with usable torque & power-band, (especially off-road).
It seems if one is willing to shell out the extra cash, the KTM Adv. are great bikes.
Look forward to more reviews, Jerry
