My name is Fredrica. I have lived with a brain injury for 5 years while dealing with my daughter’s epilepsy. THANK YOU! Thank you for this lifeline. I did not know what was happening to me. You saved my life today.

I can't blame them... because its unfair to have that injury come to you suddenly...

One big concern I have with ABI survivors is feelings of severe depression and suicidal thoughts. I work with a number of young me who have made very bad choices and now have brain damage in a variety of ways. Many of them were engaged and had careers. Now they are miserable and cannot see a way forward. The medical response in anti-psychotics and anti-depression tablets. Nearly all of then express suicidal thoughts. This has really troubled me as I have survived a brain injury. It leads me to the question 'should we warehouse people and fill them with drugs as we cannot go back in time?' Is it better for a young man to live 40 miserable years in care? By any objective measurable their existence is cruel and unusual punishment? I am strongly against any form of premature death, but some times I wonder if their desire to pass on might be the kinder option. I guess this is the discussion no one wants to have.

You make really interesting points. I hate the overmedicating we do in this country. Although life can be difficult after a brain injury, I do believe that it can get better and enjoyable at times. Check out the brain injury play list on the Utah Neuro Rehabilitation RUclips channel. I welcome your further thoughts.

      I appreciate your comments.
I believe it was Dr Gabor Mate who said about drug (and all) addiction, if for some of us, drugs and /or alcohol abuse may be keeping the edge off the pain and allows the person to NOT suicide. And I get that.
The current Adderall crisis will not help reduce number of suicide deaths.
The glimmer of hope for me and getting real recovery, but just being studied currently, are both hyperbaric O2 treatments and hallucinogens, such as psilocybin and microdosing etc. Not in combination, LOL. But maybe THAT would be full solution!
I was 61 when TBI occurred. For 3 years I have dealt with symptoms. Not every moment or day even was "miserable". But it gets rough at times.
      Really rough.
Ideation occurs. I push that permanent solution away. Hoping for recovery. Focusing on all that is positive & infulging when possible in what provides me some enjoyment, keeps me here.

I had my TBI at age 26 in a bad car wreck ... For some reason God decided to save me that day .. I was suicidal when I attempted careers-( Special Education Teacher,Car Salesman,911 Radio Dispatcher) that I could not handle due to my TBI .. I then had to fight for 15 years to get SSDI-( Social Security Disability Income) and finally got it 4 appeals and 3 attorneys later .. I now work part time driving for a car dealership part time as well as collect SSDI... The suicidal thoughts have increased dramatically since I began to receive SSDI and I rediscovered the hobby of Model Car Building that has done wonders for my self esteem-( And I believe it helps me with my TBI and PTSD as well)...

    3 TBIs. & Suicidal..
    1. December 2019 a 6ft frame fell off the wall onto my face. I didn't see it coming. It broke my nose and banged up my forehead. ER gave me a pain pill.
    2. August 2020 I fainted and fell out of my bathtub onto my head. Busted mouth, knot on my left temple, I suffered 2 seizures & required a back brace & 2 hip braces. The same ER refused me treatment after 4hours & even a gown as I was unable to dress myself before leaving home. Mask bloody, no clean one allowed.
June 16 2022 I went to the same hospital for pain treatment. Refused by a rude doctor, I tried to reach patient relations to complain. Was asked to leave & as soon as I walked out the door 3 security guards handcuffed me and smashed my head against the brick wall. Detained me but NO CHARGES. The hospital was found innocent by themselves. I'm left depressed, injured, audio and visual hallucinations, cerebral spinal fluid running from my sinuses, choking me day and night. I am suicidal & feel it's only a matter of time.

I have Aphasia and apraxia. numerous TBI's. bad one as a kid that effected my speech for life and was never helped by my family or ever told, i just struggled not knowing what was wrong with me while others made fun and belittled me for being "retarded" even tho in my head my 144iq mind shined but i have never been able release it. I received multiple TBI's in the military.. today i still suffer with aphasia and apraxia.. isolation.. lonliness.. no support system.. i don't go anywhere and havn't since before the pandemic. Constantly have issues with holding stuff without losing all function of that limb and dropping the object i was holding, same happens at random when i walk. i tremble all the time and tend to be found staring off at nothing and will lose hours. Headaches and small seizures where consciousness flickers in and out for me.. I also sustained injuries to both of my hips, lower back and shoulders while in a combat zone and have lived in chronic pain with no relief for over 10 years now . My life has been a mess, i'm tired and frusterated from constantly being misunderstood and will end up homeless in a ouple weeks. I wish assisted suicide was available option for me. But i never see utah ever having that as option nor this country.

After I was T boned in a car accident. I have to suffer with depression, I feel like my brain itches and I can’t scratch it. I lost my job because of the car accident. I got a new one but I have trouble remembering, I can’t comprehend basic things. I feel like it’s such a long list. I got so sick of the people my lawyer sent me to. After I attempted suicide. I went to my doctor yesterday and she’s going to send me to a couple of specialist. I’m still waiting for the phone call. I’m just so afraid of losing my job and letting my family down. I can’t take dealing the struggles. I want help.

I accidentally viewed a RUclips video about 1 year ago discussing symptoms of CTE which the NFL is making changes to the game.
The video showed 16 symptoms of CTE and stated if you have any of these symptoms you may have CTE or TBI. I was shocked to have everyone of those 16 symptoms, not just a few.
I started a self study to see if all these horrible symptoms might have been caused by an accident I was in 23 years ago when my head penetrated the windshield. I was knocked out for some time.
I spent 3 months last year creating this timeline to find out without a doubt my symptoms started 8 months later when I was diagnosed with severe stress, anxiety, and depression. The decline started then and it’s been 23 years of horror.
When I told my family and friends what I had discovered they essentially didn’t understand or believe what I was saying, probably said this guys flipped his lid and many don’t associate with me anymore.
5:06 That was even more heartbreaking.
Mental health has come to light lately but it’s just the right thing to say, they really don’t understand. 😢
My day was so bad today that I finally said I have to seek medical attention. I am a totally different person. Always angry, upset, . . .
Decided to look on RUclips tonight because I can’t sleep and been trembling all day. I had prostrate cancer and had to remove it, 1 year later cancer back, intense radiation therapy, but my testosterone is zero which means I have 0 energy so I stay in bed for days a lot.
Add virus these past few years that limited travel and staying home for a few years.
    Pray for me! 😢

I am very sorry to hear this. Your symptoms certainly may be related to your head injury. I see this commonly: People have a brain injury and are not educated on the possible long term symptoms. There are things that can be done to help. On this channel we have many videos on brain injury. Check out the brain injury checklist. Also, we started a non-profit called brainstorm for brain injury. You can check it out on facebook or instagram. We started this for people like you.

In my experience suicide and depression are hand in hand. As human beings we are pretty much able to justify anything to ourselves even our own end. However, this is a catch. The children of people who end their lives by suicide have a much greater chance of suicide. That is one hell of a time bomb to leave behind. We are social beings so we cannot/should not forget the cascade of damage to our loved ones.

I really enjoy your work as a survivor and academically. In this video you talk about a triple suicide related to TBI and family finances. You do not address the financial question which burdens most TBI survivors as their medical insurance runs dry. Do you have any advice on what to when the money runs out?

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  2 года назад +4

That is a HUGE problem. I don't have any specific advise. That is one reason I started this youtube channel: to give people ideas to improve that they can without cost. We also started a non-profit called Brainstorm for Brain Injury, with facebook and instagram pages. We try to do the same thing. There are some state organizations which can offer financial assistance. They vary state to state.

I just talked to my dad about the financial side, I can't work due to my brain disease so I'm on MediCal now. Because too many doctor appointments becomes overwhelming. We really need a personal assistant to handle everything, I'm so thankful for my girlfriend but I hate feeling like a burden. Just told me today how emotionally exhausted she is, this is one major reason why suicidal ideation and tendencies is so common in TBI's. Hard not to feel like everyone would be better off without me. I'm so happy I had a daughter to live for, for the first time since I was 10 I feel like I want to live my life to the end because she deserves to have a father no matter how messed up I become I know she'd always want me here with her.
