Remember Tomorrow is one of my all-time favourites. Paul was one hell of a singer, it's a shame drugs and health problems took a big toll on him and he never realized his full potential.

There were a lot great NWOBH bands at that time and I believe what made Maiden to stand out from the crowd was their raw in-your-face sound for which they needed Paul for the first two albums.
I think in 1980-82 Bruce's "Ian Gillan" style was not fresh enough to break through with Samson while Paul's raw and still melodic style was unique and brought attention to Maiden. And I think the same if we compare Clive and Niko :)

As much as I love Bruce Dickinson, I was blown away when I bought 'Killers' at the record store, mostly because of the cover, took it home and listened to it. There's no doubt that Bruce Dickinson (formerly of a band called 'Sampson') is a more polished showman and arguably has a technically better voice, but DiAnno has raw aggression and atmosphere. To me, it was a disappointment we didn't get another album from him. I'll always prefer, slightly, the Dianno years of Maiden

First of all, the new camera and mic are incredible! Love it!
Now, these songs feature Steve Harris and Dave Murray, the only two that have been there from the first. Dennis Straton was on guitar and Clive Burr on drums. This is the seminal Maiden. If you listen to songs like "Running Free" or "Murders in the Rue Morgue," you'll hear the punkiness in Paul's voice. While always rather progressive, the narrative seems to be that Harris wanted to continue in a straightforward metal vein. However, when Di'Anno was fired for drug use, Bruce Dickenson came on board, and his creative bent led them in a more theatrical direction. (Steve tried to strip back down to basics with "No Prayer for the Dying" after "Seventh Son," but it met with very mixed results. Among my own contemporaries, "No Prayer" was a bomb.)
I strongly suggest a few tracks from "Killers." In fact, "Killer" is a good song for that. You can feel how the addition of Adrian Smith evolved the band, and you can start to bridge the gap into "Number of the Beast."
You can also see some latter-day Paul Di'Anno stuff in a couple of his bands, "Battlezone" and "Praying Mantis." He has also released solo albums. (Can't tell you if they're good or bad; I was never interested.)

I was one of those dudes who heard Iron Maiden w/Dickinson before Di'anno. Then when I first did hear them with Di'anno it was the Killers L.P then after that it was the first album. I must say the first album was nothing that I expected from Iron Maiden but it's a great listen. Although I understand that Steve Harris wasn't 100% satisfied with the first album kind of felt like it wasn't quite maiden plus they we're having some musical differences with the guitar player of the time that wanted to move maiden in a more melodic pop direction which was a definite no by the rest of the band. That's kind of why Killers had a much heavier and faster approach compared to the 1st album.

I like Paul a lot as a singer. I like clive burr too. Paul got into drugs and alcohol and sometimes could not perform. So he was fired from the band. He also had different musical opinions than Steve Harris and the other members. I really thought that he was great. He was a real talent when sober. I actually like clive burr more nico and I really like nico too. I would put both of them into the rock and roll hall of fame. There 1st 3 albums were great. And paul sung on the 1st 2. Clive was there for the 1st 3.

(btw, try DRIFTER by Iron Maiden.)
The problem with the first 2 albums is that they weren't mixed very well. And by that, I mean this is old-school British heavy metal, and they were mixed PERFECTLY. - It's an issue that Steve Harris has expressed himself several times. A great example is the song "Prowler" - if you seach "Iron Maiden Prowler Soundhouse tapes" you'll find a version of Prowler that is infinitely more superior than what appeared on the album. So while the songs on the first 2 albums are awesome, live versions crush them like a bug! - And of course, I've got to stay a little jelly of my elders, who had the oppertunity to hear these songs live back when Diano was still in the band. I would have attended too, but I was rather limited due to being a foetus at the time.

Being a old Bastard I have the priviledge of owning both the Iron Maiden and Killers albums before hearing Bruce with Maiden. So i had no problems with his vocals as many who heard Bruce 1st and then went back and re-visited the Paul records. I bought everything I could get my hands on from maiden back then including all of the 12 inch singles they released with Paul. The great B side songs and live tracks that didn't make it to Maiden Japan were awesome . All of the great album art was part of the maiden experience.

the album art was a huge part of the experience. Derek Riggs created some amazing covers for Maiden's albums and me and my mates used to see who could find the cat first when listening to the album for the first time

My first experience with Maiden was the number of the beast, but I prefer D'anno over Bruce. Bruce can hit the high notes, but Paul imo had much more range as a singer.

    • @Tony_Regime
      @Tony_Regime 4 года назад

@@Krankster666 yeah, Di'Anno's voice could go from soft vocals to raucus in a beat and he could still hit pretty high notes and hold them (although not as long as Bruce)

It’s sad he’s so overlooked (not by us early days fans). I love Bruce Dickinson, but I grew up listening to the bands albums in order and loved Paul on these first two absolute classic maiden albums. You are correct Paul and Dave had such a different style but both so good in this band. I honestly think I like every song front to back on the first two albums.

many dickinson albums have some stuff that's close to just being filller or just don't what the "wow" factor. they're decent songs. but the Di'Anno stuff is awesome all the way through. too bad there's too little of it.

Paul Di'Anno is usually associated with the raw singing style he has in other songs from those first two albums (not really these slow ones), to hear something really cool and charged you should do classics like "Phantom of the opera" ( ruclips.net/video/t5jaRipA5_M/видео.html ) and "Charlotte the harlot" ( ruclips.net/video/PSHjTGgZ1mU/видео.html ) from their first album. Nothing like this raw stuff better represents early Maiden, it really was the dawn of heavy metal. Also, for just another additional 2 minutes and 18 seconds you could pull a triplet and watch their first ever tv appearance playing a short and sweet version of their first hit Running Free: ruclips.net/video/159pnbqMHOI/видео.html
