    The idea is to reduce vibration and user fatigue while propelling. Some patients are prone to impact triggered muscle spasticity, or clonus. There are plenty of chairs out there with shock absorbing front casters but this puts the action directly under the user's weight and only when needed, whereas casters are constantly flexing and some would say "robbing energy".
    It's likely not cheap but with anything, the more there are under users, the cheaper it will be. I would much rather solve a spasticity problem mechanically instead of dependence on muscle relaxing medications. Hope the insurance companies see it that way too.

    For when money is no object:
    Coming from a wheelchair user, I love every design to make our lives easier, it gets the usual handicap markup, guaranteeing none of us can buy it, along with the fact that no insurance will cover it, so again, only the rich will have one! I was lucky enough to try a wheelchair with a suspension once, the weight made it's use cumbersome, along with breaking down and loading it into your vehicle was equally difficult, so the good did not outweigh the bad. To me, the things that I would like to see, lighter rigid frame wheelchairs, durable wheels with extra durable pushrims, I'm tired of burrs cutting my hands when I bump things due to the weak material it's made out of, aluminum is not the right material for it, and for god sakes make it affordable, we don't all get a huge settlement with the accident that put us in this condition!

      Two thumbs up to that.
      I see fabulous chairs, amazing extras, 4x4 and chairs perfect for my yearly foray at Burning Man. As you said... how could those of us on disability EVER afford one of these? Some of us are barely making it,already in creepy low-income housing due to the amount of our SSD checks.
      Seeing a chair such as this is exciting, but sadly depressing to the point of hopelessness. I got no settlement; it was the onset of a one in a million chance neuro-immunological spinal disease last summer. One day a black diamond skier and hiker. The next BOOM. Paralyzed from the waist down.
      As if Medicare or Medicaid would help to pay for such a thing.
      Oh, I can still dream right?

      I once had chairs with tough titanium push rims, now they are cheap soft aluminum, getting burrs from just bumping items, causing them to either chew up my hands or my fingerless gloves I like to wear, so much for durability, exiting my lift platform of my van.

    • @rblackraven

      Maples01 So don't want to hear this. Medicare is paying for my chair -well part of it of course. I just checked and see that the body IS aluminum. It's an ultra-lightweight and I was thrilled. Damn.Have been using an old Medline K3 that causes me to pee myself when lifting it into the back of of a car. I'm able to 'wall shuffle' a bit some days/
      Know what else is stupid? I see that this same chair is available online, including shipping, for $1625.00 Due to the new (2 years ago) Competitive Bidding law I'm forced to purchase the wheelchair from a store locally. It is known for high prices. The price for me? $2425.00 This raises my cost, the 20% deductible, by quite a bit. Not to mention the extra being paid by Medicare.
      Gee, looking forward to those freaking burrs. I too use the fingerless gloves.
      Good luck! Maybe some day we'll be allowed to upgrade... some how I doubt it -grin-.

      I have a Quickie Q-7, it's 4 years old, before was a Colors Spazz, Quickie has Sun Rims, Colors had their Twisted Spoke, but both have soft push rims, years ago when I was injured, the push rim material was different, had a bronze look to it, resisted getting burrs, and I used to roll along concrete edging, over 10 years ago. My chairs have held up fine, but pushing doors with my caster on the Q-7, it's taking a toll on it, those stiff doors at businesses take some effort to push through, at times in frustration, when I get in the doorway, I like to slam them against either the doorstop or the wall, to get the reaction of those who just watched me struggle through. I've been on Medicare a long time, chose wisely when it comes to a wheelchair, the Spazz, being around about 8 years, they are strong chairs, but brake adjustment is limited to the frame design, where my center of gravity had the axle located, the brakes couldn't get a sufficient bite on the tires to hold the chair, so there was no way to keep from rolling around. The Q-7 is great, very light weight and durable, Quickie chairs have been great for me.

  • @Metal-Possum
    @Metal-Possum 7 лет назад +3

    Before even watching this video, I have a thought experiment for you all.
    Load that wheel up with some weight so the hub is off-centre. For that wheel to be rolling without an eccentric pattern would require the mechanism of the wheel to be constantly moving to keep the axis of rotation in the same place. That mechanism is wasted energy, because you can't move it without using energy, and the only energy being applied to that wheelchair is from the poor human pushing it.
    Bad idea is bad, perhaps just design some real suspension, or get a pair of legs that work.

    my bet is that this wheel will explode when it will encounter any obstacle on a speed more than 20 kmh .
    wheres the logic behind that ? to change the position of the wheel axle ??? O_O

    • @Macrocompassion
      @Macrocompassion 8 лет назад

      The amount of force necessary for going up a step cannot be applied on the wheel rim by direct hand pressure. Solutions using longer arms (or sticks) so the sitter can apply at the rim a greater force, transmitted by the sticks, are available but less popular; and presumably these can handle climbing. However, to lift the front wheels first uses the opposite force to what is needed to climb, so it gets a bit difficult!

    • @ConnyNordlicht
      @ConnyNordlicht 5 лет назад

      @@Macrocompassion No! You can put one hand to the ground and the other one holds the chair. Best if you have your seat belt on to be one piece with your chair. Then jump up one step, only using the big wheels. Seen in barrierefrei Rollstuhl training. It's great. I'm trying hard to be able to one day. In that Vvideo you can see another style, too, but it's very tricky so nearly nobody chn make it but the one who shows his very fast way! Be blessed!
