Do you prefer PON or Leca? I think i saw white princess in Ontario small plant for around 19.99. Was tempted ONLY cuz of popularity lol. But i prefer my "velvet" leaf philos
Heya! I know the feeling... plant FOMO, I've done it many times myself. Like I said in the video... don't buy the PWP unless you can find one with good variegation for cheap. I don't think it has much resale value so it's really only for our own vanity at this point, lol. 😉
In terms of pure personal preference, I prefer LECA (for most plance) mainly because it's easiest both to use and to clean. No need to buy separate components or add time-release fertilizer, and it's pretty cheap if you get a big bag. It's more easily reusable and simpler to flush and clean than pon.
LECA has a list of clear pros and cons which I'm pretty sure I discussed in my Semi-Hydro Gear Guide video here - but feel free to ping me with any questions, I can totally do a semi-hydro Q&A video at some point too!

When it comes to pon, I do use it primarily for my Anthuriums, although sometimes it can take them a little while to acclimate. I find that Monstera, Philos, Epipremnums, and Syngoniums all do really well moving directly from another substrate into LECA, and they really thrive in LECA compared to pon and most other substrates. With pon sometimes it can take them a little longer. Either way make sure you keep your water levels below the root systems if you can in either situation. In general my Anthuriums have more sensitive root systems (particularly to root rot) and the way their aerial roots pop along the stem, I find pon works better. But I still have a few in LECA lying around my tent, so what do I know? 😃

Funnily enough my sp. Morona is putting on a new leaf since I recorded this video a couple of weeks back. Here's hoping it's the biggest one yet.
very useful video for me, I have quite the same requirements as the one you share at the beginning of the video, not too much work because I am quickly on burn out about plant chores and I hate seeing plants dying (I am still grieving about my philodendron verrucosum) but I know that you can't really acclimate some tropical plants in an apartment in Paris .... Once I lived in French West Indies and I will never try here the plants that I grew there ....

Keeping tropical plants indoors is a bit of a tricky game, without the proper lighting, warmth, and humidity, you're going to be fighting a losing battle most of the time. I find that a lot of the plant RUclipsrs who grow indoors don't spend much time describing how they actually succeed in keeping a steady environment that tropicals like Aroids and Hoyas can survive in and actually thrive. It's not as easy as it looks and a lot of the requirements (e.g. 50-60% humidity) are really difficult to accomplish without things like humidifiers or enclosed spaces that you can monitor easily.
I keep a number of hygrometers around my "designated plant areas" (a.k.a.: where my wife lets me keep plants) as well as inside my cabinets and in my grow tents and that definitely helps me monitor what's going on. Hell, even my grow tent is hard to maintain as soon as this time of year rolls around. I have to setup a space heater in our (enclosed) garage because the temperature can drop under 15ºC anytime from late October to early April - running a 1500W space heater for half the day (or all day) gets very expensive! 😬
And If it makes you feel any better, I have killed at least 4 verrucosums (mostly due to neglect) over the last couple of years. The thing refuses to die inside my grow tent, though, even after forgetting to water it several times, it's vining all over the place. 😉
