It feels like there's some level of lore significance attached to this guy considering he: - shows P a play where a puppet's heart is taken out any put in a new body - expects P to reciprocate his handshake - was friends with someone named "Carlo" - never wanted to be King of Puppets The events listed above tie in neatly with what happens later Furthermore, the character Romeo appears in the original novel (tempts Pinocchio with fun and merriment, ultimately dies as a donkey)
The cutscene has a lot of visual significance to the story. The scene being enacted on the stage is meant to reveal Geppetto’s secret to Carlo (your puppet). You know that heart Geppetto gifted to you gives you a soul that all other puppets lack. However what you did not know was what the heart was for. The heart you were given and have been empowering with Ergo was a simple conduit for Geppetto’s next creation, the Nameless Puppet. Once it has reached its prime, Geppetto intends to take it. The puppet king illustrates this with the scene unfolding on the stage, which shows a puppet Geppetto removing the heart, then placing it into the nameless puppet. All of your efforts were to bring to life Geppetto’s creation. The puppet king shows you this then offers his hand as if to say “Geppetto plans to use you, leave him and join us, so we can stop him” But your character curtly refuses, slapping the hand away. By this act he admits his faith in Geppetto and his denial of the truth he learns at the very end of the game. My assumption is that Romeo was created by and discovered Geppetto’s plans to create the nameless puppet (which if you don’t know was intended to be a weapon for humans) and became the puppet king in order to stop him. Or as Romeo would put it “the whole city is teeming with monsters… of course we have to stop it” Edit: Carlo is the name of Geppetto’s son, one that died and then had his memories implanted into you, P. Apparently Romeo was a friend of Carlo, so this fight is even more interesting. Friends now rivals. This also means that Geppetto’s intends to take your heart so that Carlo becomes the next ultimate life form as the nameless puppet.
One more thing, in second phase when starts using the weaponized back-scratcher, he mentions that he needs to kill you to stop it all, as opposed to his first phase where he’s still trying to convince you to join his side.
Apparently, Romeo was human and a friend of Carlo. He was forcibly turned into a puppet (like that one ending) and given orders to start the Puppet Frenzy. His death therefore lines up with the book (Lampwick/Romeo is transformed into a lesser entity and dies of overwork/exhaustion). Note that NPCs make a distinction between P and Carlo. While P is never explicitly named at any point in game, the hotel residents recognize his purpose; Antonia Cerasani later signs off a letter with the epithet "to the young gentleman who resembles Carlo". Otherwise, P is always addressed as "Puppet of Geppetto". That at least explains the death quote ("Maybe this is what real freedom feels like...thanks, carlo... "), but it does not explain the purpose of the Puppet Frenzy
This guy single-handedly made Lies of P (for me at least) look fun to play. Edit: Serious Question for the people who see (or saw) this comment, should I try playing Lies of P again? (I never finished it) Edit 2: I should provide an update on this. I decided to play the game again soon after the first edit. Although, I’ve been playing other games recently. I’ll get back to Lies of P whenever I’m done.
Once you know the full context behind who the Puppet King actually is and his relationship with the person our character is based on, this fight gets a lot more tragic. He wasn't trying to trick or deceive you. He was genuinely convinced that his dear friend had come back from the dead and was simply trying to save you from being Geppeto's slave...but there's no way our character/Pinocchio could've known that. Up till now almost every puppet we've met has tried to kill us (and those few who could communicate we couldn't understand them) so couple that with all the talk about the King up till now and it kinda makes sense why Geppeto's Puppet would reject any offers of friendship. As far as he's concerned, it's just a trick...except it's really not. Makes me stop and wonder how different things could've turned out if Pinocchio, for whatever reason, actually accepted the offer. Could've maybe worked together to rally the other puppets and strike back against the real enemy. Probably could've made things a lot easier.
i don't know if someone noticed. but if the king defeats you in the first phase, he takes off his crown and puts it on his chest as a signal of lamenting while lowering his head.
I think it would have been a neat dynamic to have the King of Puppets fight defensively for a duration of the first phase, only attacking when P attempts to attack, then having him go into a more offensive stance once you get him to 33% or 50% of health. It would be a neat way to show that he really doesn't want to fight you, but you, the player in particular, end up forcing him to.

If they were to fix his moveset and design he would’ve been more impactful and fun. They could have given him a dodge or made him stagger less because as funny as it is to see him get staggered, he gets staggered way to often. In addition they could renovate his arena. Leave remnants of his suit (or prison) lying around the arena, making them destructible props and had patch’s of fire scattered on the floor (maybe lighting up the carpets). Besides that, the story points and animations in the fight were all magnificent. He deserved a bit more.

I never noticed how the "puppet speak" is just barely legible. it's garbled but you can make out what they say if you look hard enough. makes them seem that much more human.
After finishing the game the starting scene makes sense the king of puppets was trying to give us hint about the bad ending he was trying to warn us to not give heart to gpetto
i understand people think that blocking/parrying is the way to go, but i swear this boss was so easy once u know what to dodge and what to parry, first phase basically is all dodge and go behind with heavy attacks, 2nd phase is same thing except for 2 attacks u have to parry
All that was required of Romeo was to defiantly throw the scythe aside after being freed from the exoskeleton, and say a few words (no matter what, they still don't understand him). Yes, he can't speak clearly, but no one has canceled nonverbal communication. It would show that he really wants peace. Otherwise, from P's side, it looks like Romeo, at best, sees no other way out but to continue the fight, and at worst, he even wants him dead. The drama of misunderstanding between those who could become allies is strong, but far-fetched.
My exact reaction while playing this section: "What in the Warhammer 40K is that thing? Aw, it wants to be friends, let's take his ha--hey that's mean, don't do that aaaand you pissed him off and now I gotta kill him."

Last thing Romeo says “maybe this is what real freedom feels like, Thanks Carlo” 😕

Nevermind
I've watched this boss-apperance scene lots of time and still not feel bored.
such a great fight. Very difficult but it's very fair and well balanced. Felt so good to learn his moves and finally beat him. My favorite boss from the game
Clap your freaking hand 1:22
great boss music and fight!
I'm just gonna drop my experience with this here cuz it was really fun beating this boss and i don't want to forget it.
so i didn't really play the game to get to fight the boss but my cousin did and i just decided to try out this boss when i saw him lose to him for a while (i finished almost all the souls games so i thought this is gonna be a piece of cake, my cousin did too just for clarification) but boi oh boi this guy made me sweat the first phase took me like 5 try's to beat and 10 to perfectly beat it with no dmg but the second phase i cant even begin to explain the amount of ptsd i got fighting this guy with his raiden from mgrr looking ahh fit and melenia move set and i couldn't even beat him in the end i got him to a hair hp before i lost and my cousin finally won against him on his turn, i loved every second of this fight 10/10 would recommend.
I never noticed how the "puppet speak" is just barely legible. it's garbled but you can make out what they say if you look hard enough. makes them seem that much more human.
This was a cool bossfight second phase felt like a challenge
This reminds me alot of the opera boss in Nier Automata
The healing animation was so cool
Anyone know the song played when the king of puppets lands on the floor? 1:20
Coppélia Act 3 Nr. 1 but i couldn't find the Version used in the Game
Thanks.@@Fash_scug
@@aedan1761 You're Welcome
Do you have a video I can possibly search up?@@Fash_scug
Couldn't exactly find the music.@@Fash_scug
The king at start didn’t want to fight
I love the way he slaps the king's hand
I love the pipe organ theme that is played when the king enters the auditorium!
Great relatable fight
The pupper king looks really cool
The second phase fight and soundtrack are sooooooooo good 😮💨🔥 the adrenaline
The protagonist is natural
B. I. T. C. H.
i really enjoyed playing with the bone cutter saw and krat baton handle
1. Does the Puppet speech get translated in a 'New Game Plus' kinda way?
2. If this is Romeo, does that mean there's a Juliet?
1. yes
2. No. This Romeo is Candlewick/Lampwick(this is kinda his nickname, and his real name is 'Romeo') from original Pinocchio Story.
After finishing the game the starting scene makes sense the king of puppets was trying to give us hint about the bad ending he was trying to warn us to not give heart to gpetto
The initial cutscene takes on such a different meaning after the ending...
What hit him at 6:33?
this Boss has so much character, I just love it
In a Russian version of pinnocio this guy is a main villain, now I understand why
i understand people think that blocking/parrying is the way to go, but i swear this boss was so easy once u know what to dodge and what to parry, first phase basically is all dodge and go behind with heavy attacks, 2nd phase is same thing except for 2 attacks u have to parry
Good idea to anger the metal behemoth!
More like sadden. He's not mad, just upset you don't wanna join him on his adventures to stop Geppetto :(
I literally thought the small puppet was the enemy lmao
And there are people who think Lords of the Fallen can top this.
King of puppets my new favorite boss battle villain ❤️💯
4:29 How sad, you/Pinnochio killed that freak!
I have no idea what’s going on but the music makes me feel like this is supposed to be a tragic fight kinda like the fight with Zuko and Azula
i still wonder what the song is called

Hey look, it's Aaron Eckhart.
maneater mildred is pleased
bros basically sasori
It's the fact that King was a good guy
Such a cold entrance
My exact reaction while playing this section:
"What in the Warhammer 40K is that thing? Aw, it wants to be friends, let's take his ha--hey that's mean, don't do that aaaand you pissed him off and now I gotta kill him."
4:37 I see the puppet is destroyed, and surly this must be the puppeteer.
I now feel like an idiot because I just cheesed with spectre and cube and just hit him from the back
- Smacks hand away in the cutscene
- Starts the fight a solid quarter of a mile from the puppet king
Hid entrance was fire
What's the name of the song at 1:25?
THE KING ON ITS FLESH!!!
This game was basically a mix between dark souls and final fantasy
I wish we had the option to accept, poor Romeo was just trying to warn us😢
1:21 is funny for no reason
Recording and playing in 4k 60? What machine did you use?
PS5, you can tell by the button prompts
Мне так жалко этого добряка.......
I wish there was an option to shake hands with the king of puppets or smack the hand
